This article is an attempt to include comics into a broader field of research, namely into the topic of Holocaust. In this context, understanding of the topic is related to motifs recurring in this kind of writing. In his text, Sławomir Buryła has enumerated the following keywords: another world, smoke, silence, shmaltsovnik, torturer, selection, trains, Muslim etc. Their presence and functioning in Polish and foreign comics is discussed in the article. Additionally, the author focuses on another motif – photography – which is featured in comics on various different levels. It invokes the reality which is outside a text and, in a way, authenticates the vision presented by comics. The summary elaborates on the dangers of simplification which is characteristic for pop culture. Hence, the article is an attempt to answer the question posed by Giorgio Agamben: “What remains of Auschwitz?”

The article examines what educational inspirations arise from the conduct and deeds of the Righteous, who risked their lives to save Jews during World War II. The author argues that their memory can contribute to the formation of collective human identity today. He reports and discusses the findings of selected studies by American scholars who have interviewed thousands of rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust. In conclusion, he emphasizes that the Righteous make us realize that, regardless of personality, background or context, every human being is capable of making uncompromising ethical choices and help others spontaneously, eschewing utilitarian calculations and overcoming fear for self and family. An important factor promoting such decisions is education that underscores common humanity shared by all people, which overrides all differences and dissimilarities.

Autor syntetycznie przedstawia unormowania stosunku państwa do gmin wyznaniowych żydowskich w okresie międzywojennym oraz postanowienia ustawy z 20 lutego 1997 r. o stosunku państwa do gmin wyznaniowych żydowskich – w aspekcie jej regulacji majątkowych obejmujących nieruchomości. Autor opisuje schemat normatywny tzw. Postępowania regulacyjnego, dotyczącego realizacji roszczeń majątkowych dzisiejszych gmin żydowskich i Związku Gmin, drogą specyficznego, polubownego postępowania, w którym rozstrzygnięcia podejmowane są przez zespoły orzekające w ramach Komisji Regulacyjnej do Spraw Gmin Wyznaniowych Żydowskich, działające w oparciu o równą ilość przedstawicieli strony państwowej i religijnej. W artykule podana jest statystyka rozstrzygnięć Komisji. Zakres terytorialny opisywanego tematu dotyczy północnej części dzisiejszego Województwa Lubuskiego, wchodzącej w skład Województwa Gorzowskiego do 31 grudnia 1998 r. Tereny te stanowiły formalnie do Układu Poczdamskiego z 2 sierpnia 1945 r. część Niemiec.

The issue of restitution of Jewish property in East-Central Europe is – due to the Holocaust – of great significance for the reparation for the injustice of the Second World War. This matter has been either the subject of general or particular restitution regulations, as pointed out in the title of this paper treating of the Polish legal backdrop. The author provides a synthesis of the state's attitude to Jewish religious communities in the interwar period and discusses the provisions of the Act on the Relation of the State to Jewish Religious Communities on the subject of property regulations pertaining to fixed property. It should be noted that the act mentions only Jewish legal persons, that is, religious communities represented by the Association of Jewish Religious Communities. Hence, the act omits to include the claims of other Jewish legal persons residing in the 2nd Republic of Poland or Jewish natural persons having the status of Polish citizens on 1st September 1939, including their legal successors. This question shall be normalised in the reprivatisation bill. The author outlines the normative scheme of the so-called “regulatory procedure” concerning the satisfaction of property claims of today’s Jewish communities and of the association through amicable settlement in which the decisions are made by adjudication panels of the Regulatory Committee for the Jewish Religious Communities made up of an equal number of religious and state representatives. The article provides relevant statistics committee's decisions. The actual geographical location of the problem in question is the north part of today’s Lubuskie Voivodeship, formerly Gorzowskie Voivodeship (up to 31st December 1998). Before the Potsdam Agreement of 2nd August 1945, this area had been part of Germany. This reveals certain differences in the substantive character of the regulatory procedure implemented in the region, as opposed to other parts of the Republic of Poland. The author illustrates such processes by tracking the applications of Jewish communities and the Association of Jewish Religious Communities for the transfer of ownership of fixed property in four gminas in the area in question: Skwierzyna, Międzyrzec, Gorzów Wielkopolski and Słubice. The practice of the regulatory procedure proves synagogue and ex-synagogue buildings as well as Jewish cemeteries to be the most frequently listed items in the submitted applications. To secure funds for their renovation is an urgent need. As a matter of fact, it refers to all locations exhibiting Jewish spiritual and material culture.
This article focuses on Alex Zucker’s 2000 English translation and editing of Jáchym Topol’s Sestra (1994): City, Sister, Silver (Catbird Press). In particular, the article analyzes a passage which Zucker edited out of the novel (and which Topol also edited out of the second Czech edition of Sestra in 1996), that presents a humorous alternative history of Franz Kafka retold in a hallucinatory vision of Auschwitz. The context of the editing of the passage is instructive in thinking about the translation of Czech literature into English, especially of aesthetically and thematically challenging work: the difficult nature of cultural specific material; linguistic playfulness; and, most importantly, the role and agency of the translator. Zucker’s decision to post the edited passage online, on the publisher’s website, suggests a possible path for future translations, allowing interested readers access to work that might be edited because of domestic norms. Finally, the article analyzes Topol’s subversive humor in demythologizing Kafka, and Zucker’s translation strategies in conveying both the humor and Topol’s poetics into English.
The subject of the article is to discuss the question of the role of the bureaucracy in organizing and carrying out the extermination of the Jews during World War II. The authors treat bureaucracy in two ways. On the one hand, as a model for the functioning of Western societies, which base their decision-making on laws and existing procedures, and on the other hand, as a functioning administrative machine. The concept of bureaucracy described by Max Weber was complemented by Martin Heidegger's observations on modern technology and sociologists' findings on the causes and course of the Holocaust. The theoretical models were confronted with the functioning of the Lodz Ghetto administration headed by Chaim Mordechai Rumkowski. In this aspect, attention was paid, among other things, to the excessive growth of the bureaucracy, its involvement in controlling the population and organizing deportations, and the significance of introducing its own currency or postage stamps. The entire study was based on the literature on the subject and archival materials.

The subject of the Holocaust perpetrated by the German state against the Jews during World War II already has a rich literature. One of the less researched issues is the period of the first phase of the Holocaust in the provincial areas (villages and small ghettos). The presented text discusses the process of ghettoization, indirect extermination (exploitation, starvation, diseases, imprisonment in the ghetto) and direct crimes against Jews in the provincial areas of the occupying county of Kielce – Kreishauptmannschaft Kielce. The results of the research indicate that the course of the first phase of the Holocaust in this area did not differ from the phenomena described in the literature with reference to other areas of the General Government. A drastic deterioration of living conditions took place from the middle of 1941, in connection with the creation of ghettos, the deportation of thousands of Jews from the territories incorporated into the Third Reich to previously small Jewish centres, and the application in practice of the Third Decree on the restriction of the right of residence in the General Government of 15 October 1941. Besides, it was established that at least 98 Jews living in the Kreis Kielce province were repressed in the German prison in Kielce. However, the German authorities did not succeed in breaking contact between Jews imprisoned in the ghettos and the Polish population.

Okupanci odbierali Żydom majątek, zmuszali do pracy, pozbawiali godności a w końcu odbierali życie. W trakcie swoich rządów 8000 Żydów wysiedlili do niemieckich nazistowskich obozów zagłady, zaś 6000 zabili na terenie miasta. W 1945 roku w Białej Podlaskiej pozostało jedynie 60 Żydów.

Summary The aim of the article was to investigate the history of the Jewish community in Biała Podlaska during World War II. Material and methods The article uses regional literature, printed sources, copies of typescripts and audio and video recordings available on the Internet, which are memories of both Polish witnesses and Jewish survivors. Results The history of the Jewish community in Biała Podlaska during World War II was described. The methods of repression used by the Germans were discussed, a group of distinguished criminals was presented and the attitude of the local Polish population was characterized. Conclusions The last three years in the approximately 300-year history of Biała Jews were tragic. The occupiers stripped Jews of their property, forced them to work, deprived them of their dignity and finally took their lives. Most of them were displaced in 1942 to German Nazi extermination camps.
Ludmila Ulicka’s book Daniel Stein, the Translator deals with issues in the field of philosophy, culture, theology, religious studies, sociology, psychology. It is a book about the Second World War, the Holocaust, pogroms of Jews, and the methods of fighting Soviet power against Jews. However, its main meaning boils down to the description of the life and activity of a Polish Jew-Christian who, through his ministry and teaching, in a way promoted a new model of Christianity - Judeo-Christian. The analysis of the Ulicka novel from the point of view of this issue is the main research goal of this article.

The role of Jewish religion during the Holocaust is complex in its ambiguity. To address the topic, this article will provide a limited analysis of the faith in the power of God from the contrasting perspectives of an elite Orthodox leader, Rabbi Ephraim Oshry, and two non-elite, ordinary Jews, Judith Meisel and Sidney Shachnow. All three were imprisoned in the Kovno ghetto from 1941 to 1944. Rabbi Oshry’s purpose in his rabbinical writings, as Orthodox historigraphy, was to portray the observant as heroic to maintain the post-war faith of the Orthodox. He glorified religious observance of Jews during the Holocaust, in the seeming-absence of God, to reaffirm faith in the power of God. In contrast, the oral testimonies of Meisel and Shachnow reveal their personal anguish as they describe their individual doubt in the power of God. They explain that they questioned why God did not act to stop the destruction and slaughter. The post-war oral testimonies of Meisel and Shachnow were not created for an identified audience per se, as their testimonies were unrehearsed. In contrast, Rabbi Oshry edited and revised his published work over several decades after the war for an Orthodox audience. David Deutsch and Michal Shaul argue that in the historiography the religious perspectives of elites that glorify the observant during the Holocaust, such as those of Rabbi Oshry, have been embraced in by researchers. In contrast, they identify a near absence of academic inquiry into the religious questioning of ordinary Jews, such as Meisel and Shachnow, as revealed in oral testimonies. While this article is necessarily restricted in its scope due to its focus on the perspectives of three subjects, its purpose is to identify variation in religious thought as affected by the Holocaust.
The purpose of the article is to present research findings that deal with the organization of the accounting system in the Lodz ghetto. As a result of the research, it was found that the accounting system in the Lodz ghetto was characterized by a high degree of orderliness and an extensive internal structure, which were in conflict with the conditions of how the closed Jewish district functioned. Archival empirical research was carried out, covering mainly materials collected in the State Archives in Lodz The article presents characteristics of the current state of research, an applied research approach, a description of the adminis-trative structures and enterprises operating in the ghetto, an examination of how accounting was orga-nized, financial audit, and training in accounting. Bauman's social theory regarding the rationality of the will to survive was used as the research approach. The article is, to the best of the author's knowledge, the first attempt to examine the organization of the accounting system in the Lodz ghetto, carried out from the perspective of the Jewish accountants.

Wartykule przedstawiono m.in. charakterystykę dotychczasowego stanu badań, zastosowanego podej-ścia badawczego, opis struktur administracji oraz przedsiębiorstw działających w getcie, badanie organi-zacji rachunkowości, rewizji finansowej, szkoleń z zakresu księgowości.

The policy of the German authorities, to, in accordance with Nazi ideology, annihilate the Jewish population constantly placed the Karaites, who at that time inhabited various European countries that were gradually being conquered by German armies, in constant danger. Official attempts made in 1938 by the representatives of Karaite community to convince the German authorities to treat them as a non-Jewish population, resulted in only partial success. After the conquest of France, Lithuania and Crimea the Karaite community was persecuted in various ways. However, it succeeded in surviving the war, in contrast to the fate of most of European Jewry. This was only possible thanks to the efforts of numerous people, including hachan Seraya Shapshal.
The Representation of the Holocaust in Polish literature can be pursued from World War II up to contemporary narratives. The authors of this text concentrate on important debates in Poland concerning first of all the common as well as separate Polish-Jewish past in history, but mainly in times of the German fascist occupation. Following their literary studies they give a brief survey of the mentioned topic, concentrating mainly on three exemplary Polish books: Joanna Bator Chmurdalia (2010), Jarosław Kamiński Rozwiązła (2011), and Igor Ostachowicz Noc żywych Żydów (2012). The literary analysis of these texts is related to Polish history, culture, and politics, concerning first of all crucial changes in the society and culture. The chosen writers and their works demonstrate different approaches to an uncertain, complicated Polish Jewish past. They illustrate important changes in literature towards documentary and fictional narratives. More and more tabooed topics of the extreme living conditions during the Nazi occupation in and outside of the concentration camps are considered – crime, various forms of sexuality and prostitution. Jewish life stories as well as the holocaust turn meanwhile into ‚normal‘ motives in contemporary Polish narratives. Searching for their own roots, identity and family traces on the basis of documents, reports or photos often results in colourful reconstructions of Polish-Jewish fates, a striking tendency not only in contemporary Polish literature.

The aim of an article „Slovak Jews in Majdanek camp” is to present the facts about transports and characteristics of those prisoners. Transports of Jews from Slovakia were headed to Majdanek from the end of May till the middle of June 1942. In this period, only men were sent to the camp. Women, children and people who were unable to work were placed in ghettos in the area of Lublin district. They were brought to KL Lublin in the summer and autumn 1943 after liquidation of the ghettos. Slovak Jews did not present a socially homogeneous group in the camp. Those who were educated and knew German took various functions. Their privileged position in the camp and the fact that they did not allow anyone else to enter their group made other prisoners jealous and was a reason of conflicts with other groups. Pentalties, chicanes, killing in gas chamber and above all primitive living conditions were a reason of high mortality in the camp. Those who stayed alive were murdered on the 3th of November 1943 during the “Erntefest” action. This day about 18 000 Jews from many countries were shot. Only those who were deported to KL Auschwitz in May and June 1942 and those who ran away survived.

The Holocaust, carried out by the Nazi during the second world war on almost six million Jews, has left its distinct mark on the post-war reality. This event has resulted in great emptiness, noticeable on many levels, e.g. demographic, social, cultural and architectural. The memory of the Holocaust, vivid among the survivors, was an effort to fill that void. This paper discusses two major problems: the memory and the testimonies of survivors, both of which have already been thoroughly explored. These terms are present in theoretical and public discourse. Instead of comprehensive presentation of the memory of the Holocaust and the role of testimony in representing the Holocaust or attempting to define the expressions in question, I have chosen to delve into three aspects. What is in the scope of my interest is, firstly, the approach of the historiography of the Holocaust to the testimonies of survivors. Secondly, I am investigating the relation between the testimonies and the memory of the Holocaust. Finally, the paper concludes in an attempt to present the problem of the memory of the Holocaust in relation to the testimonies of former prisoners of Concentration Camp at Majdanek.

Wydarzenie to spowodowało ogromną pustkę zauważalną na wielu płaszczyznach, m.in. demograficznej, społecznej, kulturowej i architektonicznej.
The article deals with the problematic relationship between Paul Celan and Martin Heidegger. The two knew and respected each other intellectually, but the obstacle in their relationship was Heidegger’s involvement in the Nazi movement, which was unacceptable to Celan as a direct witness to the Holocaust. The main difference between them was in their view of the role of language: Heidegger wanted to use ‘poetic’ thought to overcome the crisis of metaphysics and reformulate the question of being, while Celan to give a voice to all the martyred. Though Celan never succeeded in getting Heidegger to apologize in any way for his involvement with the Nazis, his moral superiority – both in his thought world and during their mutual encounters – is obvious.
This study focuses on the prose work of Jiří Gruša Mimner aneb Hra o smrďocha (Atmar tin Kalpadotia) (Mimner or Play about a Stinker). It is based on an interpretation of an imaginary ''Calpadotia'' as a ''state of mind'', and attention is focused in particular on ''Calpadotian'', the fictitious language of the totalitarian society, and especially the steps whereby the gradual adoption of the rules of this language play a role in the disintegration of the protagonist's personality. The key to understanding the role of the fictitious language in the novella is found in the unusual way in which Calpadotian structures reality, both with its more subtle differentiation of individual concepts and in particular with its polysemy. This indicates how the usage of the same term for phenomena that Western readers do not consider to be associated helps to characterize Calpadotian society, which gradually assimilates the chief protagonist, as alien and incomprehensible to the point of absurdity. At the same time it works with the idea that such emphasis on the role of language opens up more general questions on its extraordinary nature. The study also compares polysemy in Calpadotian with polysemy in totalitarian Newspeaks and in natural languages, taking into account their literary usage. In polysemy and the association of the apparently inassociable the study seeks the source of the unease which the prose evokes, as well as the source of the paradox and the alienation which makes it a manifestation of artistic resistance to a dystopian society.
