The result of the British referendum came as a surprise to everyone, but the British themselves seemed to be the most surprised of all. The British vote in favour of leaving the EU can be blamed for “an earthquake” not only on world markets and in European politics, but also within the major British political parties, as it is bound to exert a profound impact on their future as well as the future of the EU. The crisis following the June referendum will have repercussions for the British party system and the debate on Brexit has brought a new take on the “old” British socio-political cleavage, namely Euroscepticism.
The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU structures creates a new chapter in the history of the European integration. For the first time, after several decades of steady and secure functioning of the EU, a split occurs. Lofty ideas about creation of strong, coherent, wealthier and safer Europe lose in the competition with economic indicators and the national interest of the United Kingdom. Brexit is an expression of the negative evaluation of the EU functioning by the British society. This opinion is grounded in difficulties of the EU with solving current economic, social and political problems of contemporary Europe, as well as in decreased cooperation among member states. The following most important reasons for Brexit should be mentioned: the uncontrolled inflow of immigrants, increased terror threat, loss of economic independence and national identity. It is also worth noticing the successful actions of right-wing politicians who used the situation to build their own vision of the state. Consequences of Brexit shall affect both the United Kingdom and the EU member states but also non-EU countries. They shall have political, economic and social dimensions. However, at the current stage of the negotiations, it is difficult to predict all effects of the decisions taken. According to analysts, the UK shall incur financial losses, competitiveness of economy will decline, GDP will go down, political relations with neighbour states will deteriorate. Brexit shall affect particularly these states which are close trade partners of the United Kingdom. Loss of the UK as one of the economic pillars of the EU shall influence the economic situation of the entire European Union. Brexit is also a crack in the EU image as an organization cherishing the values of solidarity and humanism. Individual interests of particular member states can be a contagious example. Until recently, European integration has been progressing unevenly yet consistently in the direction of deepening the process. Brexit only seemingly opens the door towards faster integration. A number of economic and geopolitical threats combined with a lack of strong leadership in the European Union are responsible for leaving unresolved the dilemmas of setting the directions and pace of integration in the long-term horizon. The “muddling through” scenario remains the most probable.
The role of the British parliament in the process of leaving the European Union—especially in invoking Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union—has created great political and legal controversy. The objective of this article is to systematise knowledge on the matter by examining what is and should be the function of Westminster, as well as of the British devolved parliaments, at the various stages of withdrawal from the EU. Given that it belongs to the competence of the UK parliament to ratify the withdrawal agreement, repeal the European Communities Act and adapt national legislation to institutional functioning outside the EU, an early and systematic parliamentary involvement in Brexit negotiations seems to be a political prerequisite.

The environmental implications of the UK leaving the EU have yet to be fully realized, but the picture is by no means all negative. Initially, as far as possible, all EU environmental legislation continues to apply in the interests of regulatory certainty but divergences are beginning to emerge. Brexit has led to the proposed establishment of a new independent environmental watchdog, and the Government has committed itself to ambitious environmental goals. The Common Agricultural Policy will be replaced by financial schemes that will pay farmers only for public benefits, mainly concerning the environment. At the same time, a consequence of Brexit is that that the UK will see increasing divergencies in environmental law and policy within its devolved administrations.
The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union may have a significant impact on Europe’s political, economic and military security. The resources of the European Union will undoubtedly be reduced as a result of Great Britain leaving. However, the European Union will gain more sophisticated forms of defence cooperation, due to the departure of an actor who has been one of the most obstinate opponents of the Union’s strategic autonomy. This mandates the search for new analytical concepts and theoretical models to describe European security that may emerge as a result of Brexit. These will have fundamental significance for the countries currently benefiting from peace and stability in Europe, including Poland.

The aim of the paper is to critically analyse the main elements proposed in the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2021–2027 presented by the European Commission in May 2018 and the ways to solve the problem of the Brexit gap. The assessment of the effects of budgetary changes is focused on Poland. In order to achieve the research goals, we conduct a critical analysis of EU documents and a review of the literature. Britain’s exit from the EU may speed up the reform of EU budget revenue. The Brexit gap is so large that EU Member States, despite a general dislike of taxes at the EU level, may accept some of the EU proposals in order to bridge that gap. An increase in GNI-based contributions to the EU budget is also a very possible scenario. On the expenditure side of the budget, the new MFF provides for cuts in spending on agricultural and cohesion policies. As a very large beneficiary of such support at present, Poland will lose relatively the most. The compromise on funding the Brexit gap will significantly affect the EU’s ability to finance its priority expenditure after 2021 and thus the possibility to cope with present and future integration challenges.

The purpose of this study is to identify the main determinants that may influence the impact of Brexit on the process of integrating financial markets in the EU. In particular, it elaborates on the problem of providing financial services under alternative modes of access to the EU internal market. Two key determinants were discussed that may influence the impact of Brexit on the EU financial markets in an opposite direction, i.e. the linkages between the British financial market and the EU internal market as well as a deeper financial integration in the EMU.

In recent years, it is difficult not to notice the growing number of serious crises experienced by the European Union. It is clear that the old methods of overcoming crises in today's reality do not work anymore. The United Kingdom European Union membership referendum in June 2016 (the so-called Brexit) can undoubtedly be called a special turning point in the existence and functioning of the EU. The aim of the article is to present, analyze and compare opinions and assessments created in the expert and academic environment in Russia on the future of the European Union after the referendum in Great Britain. Another goal is to find an answer to the question of what future of relations between the EU and Russia is expected by Russian researchers and experts. In the article the following research methods were used: desk research, critical analysis, comparative method and analysis of media discourse.

Hereby paper is dedicated to the issue of Brexit in the context of liberal theory of international relations, mainly by adoption of the qualitative method of textual examination of selected works, devoted to the abovementioned paradigm. The hypothesis of this article is a statement that liberal approach has a limited applicability to description of community disintegration mechanisms, including Brexit as their unquestionable syndrome. Existing theories of European integration, of which liberalism is one of the most influential theoretical schemes, reveal several malfunctions in exploration of Union’s decomposition processes, however, on the other hand, some of their specific components still remain valid. The above issue exposes a demand for investigating new tools and researching methods to scrutinize current trends in the European Union that would allow to review the present state of this organization in a more adequate manner.
The article analyses the potential impact of Brexit on the voting power of member states and indirect voting power of EU residents in the Council, in the case of adopting decisions by the qualified majority of votes. The leading hypothesis of the paper assumes that the fact of leaving the EU by Great Britain leads to another transfer of voting power to the benefit of five countries with the largest populations. The aim of the paper is also to determine to what extent the indirect voting power of residents from individual member states is equal. The obtained results indicate that a flow of voting power towards the five member states with the largest populations will be a consequence of Brexit.

Poles represent one of the largest groups of economic immigrants to the UK. As a result of Brexit, many of them have redefined their migration scenarios, which has affected the economy and some areas of social and cultural life in the UK. This paper presents the results of our original quantitative study conducted in the autumn of 2019 on a sample of 620 Polish respondents living in three locations in England – London, Oxford, and Swindon. The study addresses the question Do Polish migrants intend to return to Poland, and if they do, when? and examines to what extent this decision is influenced by the length of their stay in England, by their financial situation, by their knowledge of English, by their ability to assimilate culturally, by how much they miss their family, by homesickness, and by their craving for Polish culture. The article follows the typology of attitudes adopted by Poles towards Brexit, as identified by Agnieszka Trąbka and Paulina Pustułka.
PROBLEM I METODY BADAWCZE: Podstawowym problemem badawczym zaprezentowanym w publikacji są możliwe perturbacje w obszarze globalnego handlu usługami w związku z Brexitem. W opracowaniu zastosowano analizę tekstów źródłowych, analizę dostępnych danych statystycznych, metodę opisową oraz analizę SWOT. PROCES WYWODU: Artykuł rozpoczyna przedstawienie formalno‑prawnych aspektów wychodzenia Wielkiej Brytanii z Unii Europejskiej, następnie ukazano pozycję opisywanego kraju w światowym i unijnym handlu usługami.
Brytyjskie przedsiębiorstwa prowadzą aktywną działalność handlową poza Unią Europejską, głównie w USA i Azji.
The aim of the article is to identify the consequences of Brexit from the point of view of the EU finances. The first section focuses on the share of member states in the EU budget revenue. The author attempted to estimate the additional contribution of each member state. The second section briefly shows in which EU programmes the UK still takes part. The third section concentrates on the adjustment of the shares in the capital of the European Investment Bank and the European Central Bank to the reduced number of shareholders. The next part discusses the budgetary correction mechanisms as a historical remnant of the British rebate. In the last section the author describes the Brexit Adjustment Reserve, which supports regions and sectors most affected by the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union.
This article presents a new phenomenon in the European Union. Namely, the country abandonment from the EU Structures. The first country which made that, was the United Kingdom, as the result of the referendum form 23rd June 2016. Slightly more than half of the British people decided to leave EU. The day after the announcement of the Brexit results, media from all over the world began to comment on the unexpected results of the referendum. It has started a discussion about what will happen next? Many publicists and analysts asked how will European Union function without the one of the most important countries in Europe? What consequences await the British departing from the structures of the European Union? Is there a danger for “domino effect” in which other countries will try to leave the European Community?
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: This article aims at identifying, discussing and and evaluating historical determinants of the British/English separateness. RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: Brexit is the sign of disintegration tendencies within the EU. Wide literature studies indicated a research gap regarding the historical determinants of the British/English separateness. The research was conducted with the application of the research methods: literature studies, critical thinking, inductive and deductive reasoning, nomothetic analysis. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The line of reasoning consists of three essential elements. At first, Brexit literature review was conducted. The next part focuses on the dynamics of the process of Brexit. The final part concentrates on the analysis of historical economic and political sources of separateness of England / Great Britain. RESEARCH RESULTS: The conducted research made it possible to prove hypothesis according to which Brexit is yet another example of separateness of Great Britain, while separateness of Great Britain results from numerous historical determinants and – on the other hand – history of Great Britain brings numerus reasons for and indications of its separateness. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS AND RECOMMEDATIONS: The specific path of England to the position of world leader has left its mark not only on social relations, but also on the mentality of the English. It confirmed their belief in the uniqueness and difference as compared to other nations, which in turn nourished the tradition and traditional way of life, especially in older generations. The above stated regularity has been confirmed by the referendum on leaving the EU. The obtained research results suggest that the British separateness and its historical determinants should be considered as essential factor in the process of post-Brexit relations between the EU and the UK – both in regard to political aspects and practical issues.
The relations between the United Kingdom and the Russian Federation have a long history. Over centuries those relations were changing. At the beginning the countries were hostile and militant towards each other. Then, they became allies in World War I and World War II. However, never in the modern history bilateral relations between Great Britain and Russia have been so obscure and distant. Some scientists and politicians even suggest that relations between the United Kingdom and Russia are frozen. This thesis can be supported by the analysis of recent events in the 21st century history: from an attempt to murder ex-Russian agent in 2018 to firing warning shots at the British Royal Navy destroyer in the Black See by Russians in 2021.
