The purpose of this article is to discuss the changes that took place in relation to the peculiarities of Capoeira within Brazilian society. This popular practice, which is considered a martial art, a dance and a game, developed during the 19th century, where it was practiced by individuals from the lower walks of life. Practicing Capoeira was a felony, as it posed a threat to public safety, order, and morality. Presently, it has been upgraded to a Brazilian cultural asset, which shows how the perception of its practice has changed. These changes follow the different views of the historical processes related to abolitionism and the perverse incorporation of blacks into society at that time, which have continued until present time, having undergone significant changes and grown as a valued physical expression

The article discusses the Quaker contribution to the rise of British social anthropology. In the first half of the 19th century, Quakers were at the forefront of reform movements, advocating for the prohibition of the slave trade, the abolition of slavery, and the protection of the rights of in-digenous people in colonies. From their religious and moral beliefs, an interest in the cultures of indigenous peoples emerged, leading to pioneering research. Prominent Quaker figures, such as Thomas Hodgkin, James Cowles Prichard, and Edward Burnett Tylor, established institutions such as the Aborigines Protection Society, the Ethnological Society of London, and the Anthro-pological Institute (now the Royal Anthropological Institute), to carry out their humanitarian and scientific mission. Their contributions were crucial in shaping the scientific foundations of an-thropology and establishing the theory of social evolution as its theoretical basis.

The anthology edited by Libora Oates-Indruchová Tvrdošíjnost myšlenky. Od feministické kriminologie k teorii genderu (Doggedness of Idea. From Feminist Criminology to Theory of Gender) – published on the occasion of the 70th birthday of Gerlinda Šmausová –, which has as its subject-matter the importance of gender for criminality, focuses on the issue of whether the criminality of women has an ontic nature or whether it is rather the result of labelling, initiated by organs of penal control. The criminality documented by police is seen more as an “artefact” of police investigation, extended into the lifeworld and very often explained by labelling approaches. The anthology points to the contradiction between sociology as an discipline that casts doubt on the naturalness and fixity of social phenomena on the one hand and the simple-minded adoption of a conception of stable homogenous gender identity corresponding to biological gender-difference on the other. For the sake of analysis and advancement of knowledge in the theory of gender, Gerlinda Šmausová aims to abandon dualism and to research into social heterogenity by exploring the theoretical approaches of Sandry Harding, Élisabeth Badinter a Judith Butler

This venture shows the complexity of the terminology related to the impact of pacifist ideology on society. The article presents the evolution of the term ‘pacifism’ and the essential components consolidating the respective research area. Following Peter Brock’s thinking the author presents pacifism in relation to religion, state, politics, abolitionism, use of force and war.

The discussion on the death penalty is mainly based on two conflicting positions. The first of them – retentionism – is the belief in the rightness of executing the death penalty and accepting certain restrictions of its use. The second is abolitionism, which opposes the death penalty in criminal legislation. Both items are based on reliable opinions and postulate the rightness of their opinions. The article also contains a brief description of the most important theories on the subject of the death penalty: retrive and preventive theories, and finally the question of a modern approach to the legitimacy of the death penalty.

For more than two hundred years, human rights and freedoms have formed the foundation of human existence. In 2001, international opinion declared the slave trade a crime against humanity. Throughout 2007, Britain celebrated the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade. On March 25, 2008, the United Nations celebrated the first annual commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The same year marked the bicentenary of the official end of the international slave trade. On March 3, 1807, President Thomas Jefferson signed a bill approved by Congress that prohibited the importation of slaves into the territory under the authority of the United States. The slave trade and the phenomenon of slavery in the British colonies of North America caught the attention of the eminent political columnist, Thomas Paine. Thomas Paine was the spiritual leader of the American and French revolutions, a fighter for the right to freedom, a fierce enemy of absolutism, and a champion of the struggle for human rights. The article aims to present Paine's journalistic and political activities in the fight against social injustice, which was the issue of slavery in the British colonies in America. His involvement in social and political life in the emerging new country on the world map – the United States of America – widely described in the press, contributed significantly to taking action to abolish slavery. Thomas Paine, because of his merits in the struggle for the abolition of slavery, was hailed by posterity as the first abolitionist of America.

Od ponad dwustu lat prawa i wolności człowieka tworzą fundament egzystencji ludzkiej. W 2001 roku opinia międzynarodowa uznała handel niewolnikami za zbrodnię przeciwko ludzkości. Przez cały 2007 rok Wielka Brytania obchodziła dwusetną rocznicę zniesienia handlu niewolnikami. W dniu 25 marca 2008 roku Organizacja Narodów Zjednoczonych obchodziła pierwsze doroczne obchody Międzynarodowego Dnia Pamięci Ofiar Niewolnictwa i Transatlantyckiego Handlu Niewolnikami. Thomas Paine był przywódcą duchowym rewolucji amerykańskiej i francuskiej, bojownikiem o prawo do wolności, zaciekłym wrogiem absolutyzmu, a przede wszystkim orędownikiem walki o prawa człowieka.

Although the beginnings of the feminist movement in the United States are widely known, few of us are aware of how important a role two Polish women played in it. It is also surprising that the activities of both women have so far been a subject of interest to foreign rather than Polish researchers. The aim of this article is, therefore, to familiarize the Polish reader with the profiles of both Ernestyna Potowska‑Rose (1810–1892) and Maria Zakrzewska (1829–1902). The story of Ernestyna Potowska‑Rose is an extremely fascinating one. Suffice it to say that she went to the United States to co‑create an Owenite commune, and soon became one of the leading figures of both abolition and feminist movements. Also, in the nineteenth century, the second heroine of this article became a symbol for women who decided to cross the traditional boundaries set for the sexes. Together with Elizabeth Blackwell, eight years her senior, and Mary Putnam Jacobi, who was thirteen years her junior, she is considered one of the leading figures within the first generation of female physicians in the United States.

The article analyses the Arab clove plantations on the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba in the nineteenth century. The aim of this analysis is to show the functioning of a non-European model of plantations using slave labour. The author presents the organisation of work on the clove cultivation and characterises the owners and the workforce. He describes not only changes that affected this system in the nineteenth century, but also indicates the extent to which the plantations themselves contributed to the social and economic transition of the islands. The Arab model of plantation is shown compared to the similar systems in the Americas, highlighting common features of this institution as well as its unique elements on Zanzibar and Pemba.

The issue of capital punishment is a subject of ongoing and often emotionally charged conflict between abolitionists and retentionists, and to this day, a unified international standard has not been achieved. The essence and justification of the death penalty is a matter of exceptional value and importance in the socio-moral context, which is why, in order to effectively emphasize the multifaceted and complex aspects of it, the article provides an in-depth description of criminal punishment as a general issue, as well as the history of the creation of the ultimate punishment and the background of the events that shaped the contemporary Polish legal system. The article aims to synthetically organize the current state of knowledge concerning selected issues related to the death penalty. This text is based on the numerous achievements of currently available scientific literature and refers to the most frequently used arguments in public discourse, presented by both supporters and opponents of the death penalty.

The paper aims at discussing Wolniewicz’s polemics with naturalistic abolitionism. At first, the division of positions regarding the main punishment and then the arguments of naturalistic abolitionists are discussed. The main features of the latter are utilitarianism, anthropological meliorism and anti-nativism. Wolniewicz’s arguments are completely different: he recognizes the concept of equal repayment as the only concept of justice (rigoristic one) possible to be defended. His position is characterized by anti-meliorism and nativism. Finally, the problem of maintaining the concept of freedom and responsibility on the ground of radical anthropological nativism is taken up. The author evokes Elzenberg’s theory of tragedy to highlight the problem

This article attempts a preliminary exploration of the relationship between a broadly understood leftist and progressive thought and the ideas of animal rights, along with the demands of pro-animal abolitionism. It presents and analyzes a range of perspectives from scholars and intellectuals critically examining the state of human-animal relations. The ideological foundations of dominant forms of leftist thought are discussed, as well as the current social norm and the status of animals resulting from it, and their impact on the ability of a political class to adopt radical positions. The article also examines a social change strategy known as pragmatic abolitionism, which accepts certain interim solutions as steps toward an ultimate goal. Finally, it addresses and analyzes the scope of policy demands within the Polish left-wing circles.

Przybliżono strategię zmiany społecznej nazywaną pragmatycznym abolicjonizmem, w ramach której w drodze do osiągnięcia celu ostatecznego akceptowane są niektóre rozwiązania połowiczne. Podano i przeanalizowano zakres postulatów programowych polskich środowisk lewicowych.
