In the article the attention is focused on the ways of grammaticalisation of the speaking subject (the lyric subject) in the poetry by Jan Lechoń in his last two collections (Aria z kurantem [‘Aria with Carillon’], 1945, and Marmur i róża [‘Marble and a Rose’], 1954). Only the pieces in which the speaking subject may be equated with the author himself have been chosen for examination (e.g. Naśladowanie Or-Ota [‘Imitating Or-Ot’], Wieczór w Salamance [‘An Evening i n Salamanca’], and Cytata [‘Quotation’]). In order to present his feelings, sensations, and experiences the poet expresses himself either in first person singular or in other forms. The former include both verbal forms, e.g. wiem [I know], tęsknię [I miss] and pronominal forms, e.g. mi [me] (compare: Wiem, czego mi potrzeba: tęsknię do ojczyzny [‘I know what is necessary for me to live: my home country’]), which are unambiguously marked. The latter may be the verbal forms such as second person singular, e.g. mógłbyś [‘you might’], or pronouns of second person, e.g. ci [‘thee’] (compare: Te same mógłbyś kwiaty oglądać stokrotnie / I zieleń, co wciąż bardziej zda ci się głęboką [‘The same flowers you might look at a hundred times’ / And at the verdancy that seems deeper and deeper’]. What takes place then is a stylistic substitution, as a result of which certain grammatical forms become carriers of other value than the one that is ascribed to them normally; in other words, the exponents of the speaking subject perform the function of first person (compare: mógłbyś = mógłbym [‘you could = I could’], ci = mi [‘thee = me’]), which is incompatible with their systematic characteristics. The grammatical processes presented in the article are examples of stylistic accommodation and perform diverse functions in a poetic text. Introducing other forms instead of the first-person ones may serve as a generalisation (the embracing function, compare: Nieraz potop nas zalewał [‘Many a time had we been inundated with a deluge’]) or universalisation (the generalising function, compare: Trzeba z tym się zgodzić [‘It is necessary to agree with that’]) of the phenomena indicated by them.
This article deals with prose written by Věra Linhartová and published between 1964 and 1968. The focus of the article is on the noetic and philosophical dimension of words as one of the main features of Linhartová’s poetics – Linhartová is trying to reflect immediate subjective ideas in her texts. The word “idea” (představa) in Linhartová’s texts refers to the intentions of the characters – i.e. what they intend to communicate in the particular moment. The trio of the speaking subject, words and ideas forms the basis for the noetic and philosophical reflections in Linhartová’s texts, with the form of the texts as the practical counterpart to these reflective passages.
The paper examines the concept of the speaking subject, the key term of Jerzy Bartmiński’s Linguistic Worldview Program (LWP), from the point of view of Ronald Langacker’s theory of Cognitive Grammar. We propose to characterize the dynamic, open nature of Bartmiński’s speaking subject in terms of Langacker’s notion of conceptualizer, a hybrid category consisting of the speaker and the hearer, between whom the discursive negotiation of meaning takes place. It is assumed that the model applies to all types of discursive interaction involving all kinds of spoken and written discourse, including literary works. In order to be able to account for the meaning negotiation process in discourse, we propose to use Ronald Langacker’s theory of the Current Discourse Space (CDS) combined with the Storyworld Possible Self model (SPS) as developed by María-Ángeles Martínez in her analysis of literary texts.

This paper presents an analysis of the “rhetorical plural” as used in the prose of Věra Linhartová, namely in her Povídka nesouvislá (An incoherent story), included in the prose collection Prostor k rozlišení (Space to Discriminate, 1964), and in two texts from the collection Meziprůzkum nejblíž uplynulého (Interim Research into the Most Recent Past, 1964), entitled Totéž později and Račí kánon na běsovské téma (The same thing later, A crab canon on a fiendish theme, respectively). The first part of the study devotes attention to different types of text subjects and their involvement in the process of (literary) communication. The theoretical definition of various types of the first person plural presented by grammar and style handbooks or other specialised works is also the subject of brief examination. The second part of the paper focuses on the functions carried out by the first person plural in Věra Linhartová’s prose. Our aim is to show that the authorial plural in artistic texts need not serve the function assigned to this grammatical device in specialised texts and that the authorial plural must be distinguished from the inclusive plural, as these types not only perform different functions, but also refer to different referents.
