The author outlines a story of Kazimierz Nowak, Polish traveler who crossed over Africa on a bicycle in 1930s. The article aims to describe the role of the photography and the bicycle in his journey. It also tries to describe Kazimierz Nowak as a flâneur and as a tourist. Furthermore, the text outlines the history of Polish colonial pretensions and the activity of Liga Morska i Kolonialna, the official Polish institution who fought unsuccessfully for the Polish colonies through the thirties.

The article focuses on W.B. Yeats’s early critical and theoretical writings with a view to demonstrating the poet’s idea of poetical culture as a means towards moulding the identity of Ireland outside the polarity of English colonial discourse and Irish extreme nationalist agenda. It is argued that Yeats envisages the poetical culture as built around two ideals. On the one hand, he recommends the return to oral poetry as a source of symbolic continuity of Irish identity; on the other he infuses his belief in symbolic truth with an ironic doubt as to the possibility of ever unveiling that truth. Yeats’s idea is then set against Edward Said’s and Homi Bhabha’s theories of postcoloniality.

This paper is a review of Dariusz Skórczewski’s book entitled [Theory, Literature, and Discourse: A Postcolonial Landscape] (Lublin 2013). In the first part the objects of Skórczewski’s research: its intellectual horizon (i.e. Edward Said’s tradition) and “identity discourse”, were indicated. Next, research tools used by Skórczewski in the analysis of Polish literature: “mimicry”, “hybridity”, “compensation”, “orientalization”, were presented. In the last part of the paper, a valuation of Skórczewski’s work was made. It could be said that it is a very important book for postcolonial theory in Poland.

The article presents an interpretation of texts published in 1923 as a collection of translated African poetry, which was in fact a literary mystification. The concepts of postcolonial criticism are used to analyze some racial stereotypes that have been updated by the authors of the performance and to demonstrate how they project their own ideas of regionalism and primitivism on the characters in their poems, thereby committing an act of symbolic anthropophagy

Warto dziś przeciwstawić socjologii krytycznej socjologię krytyki i wrócić do krytyki samego pojęcia krytyki. Punktem wyjścia do metarefleksji mogłaby być koncepcja krytyki Michela Foucaulta.

The paper discusses the proliferation of the emancipatory promises in discourses of critical sociology. The stimulation of reflexivity and agency, that is commonly associated with emancipation, is usually uncritically regarded as sine qua non of social development. As a consequence of “the emancipation boom” the notion of emancipation is becoming blurred and vaguely comprehensive, and critical analyses of power and subjectivity are losing their rebellious potential. On the one hand, the idea of emancipation is being reduced to an activist social praxis and to a technology of empowerment. On the other hand, the idea of emancipation serves as a repressive measure of evaluating human activities. These problems are illustrated with an example of post colonialism and socially involved performance studies. Today it seems necessary to juxtapose critical sociology and sociology of critique – and return to the critique of the notion of critique itself. Michel Foucault’s concept of critique could be a starting point for a metareflection.

The aim of the article is to present the extent to which postcolonial studies are useful in research on Silesia. The first part analyzes the social and economic dependence. Silesia is presented as an early periphery of the capitalist world economy gaining in importance along with the industrialization process. The author highlights that despite the evident exploitation of the region and its social costs, it is hard to recognize Silesia as an “internal colony” of subsequent state organisms. The second part examines the regional discourses of emancipation, including the nationalist ones contributing to creation of new forms of identity of Silesians. The author emphasizes that the conspicuous feature which distinguishes the Silesian discourses of emancipation from the colonial ones is that Silesians were not denied individualization and empowerment, although in Poland and Germany they were denied being recognized as a separate nation. The conclusion of the article is that postcolonial studies should be only one intellectual source of the researchers of Silesia, not a dominant paradigm.

The author argues that they lead to searching for innocent victims of colonization using different, sometimes even contradictory interpretative clues, and the result – not always intended – is treating modernity as no-alternative model. In place of these fatalistic and narrow conceptions the author proposes a reference to the cultural modernization theory, formulated by Charles Taylor, which states that modernity is a new form of cultural self-understanding and creative adaptation of institutional solutions coming from the outside.

I present a new reading of the Maria Kuncewicz novel, entitled The Foreigner, with using postcolonial perspective and consensus as a form of moderated group process aimed at reaching agreement. The work is based on the premise that if the discussion of literary texts is to make sense, we must see in it a chance for a real change of reality. Postcolonial interpretations show the colonized identity as a process of continuous positioning, linked to the processes of trauma conversion, the internalization of prejudice, and the amplification of the pattern of violence. On the other hand, the consensus method shifts the focus from text to interpreting community which can really influence on the surrounding reality.

Andrea Levy’s Small Island captures the immigrant’s experience in cosmopolitan London. In this novel, she showcases the fact that contrary to its claims to be accommodating to this diversity, the values upheld make no room for difference as they are strictly Eurocentric. The characters who through their colonial experience and education have been misled to believe that they are part of the British Empire are presented here faced with the shock of discovery that once in England, they are ascribed the second class position. This paper intends to interrogate the claim to cosmopolitanism. This is done through an engagement with postcolonial critique which conceptualizes the power relations between the colonizers and the colonized. The main argument of this discussion is that although the London of Andrea Levy’s Small Island accommodates individuals from a variety of racial, national, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, they are never given the chance to experience any form of social integration.

Small Island (pol. Wysepka), autorstwa Andrei Levy, przedstawia losy imigrantów w kosmopolitycznym Londynie.

The article presents the work of the Szczecin writer, Artur Daniel Liskowacki, in a postcolonial perspective. This author became famous for his novel Eine kleine, but he has published several books on the issues of German cultural memory in Polish Szczecin, or more broadly – in the former German lands. A different subject is characteristic of his novel Murzynek B., which describes the issues of exoticism, racial and ethnic stereotypes, especially related to the figure of a black person (Negro) in Polish culture. These so different works, however, are linked by the perspective of the reflection on the Stranger/Other, xenophobia and the construction of Polish identity constituted in the face of dissimilarity. Therefore, Liskowacki’s work was presented as postcolonial writing – aestheticizing the key issue of critical reflection on colonial relations, in the broad sense of the term.

This paper examines four discursive strategies: colonizing, animalizing, infantalizing and (plant) vegetative that characters in Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy use to name the Crakers, post-humans with modified DNA structure. In discussing them, I expose a dehumanizing effect this seemingly neutral processes of naming and describing have. The interpretative findings discussed in this paper constitute a response to largely anthropocentrically oriented extensive criticism on Atwood’s writing. By questioning the neutrality of the narrative through a postcolonial reading of the trilogy, I argue that MaddAddam challenges the divisions between human and non-human. The paper investigates whether these dehumanizing discursive tactics of animalization, colonization, infantilism or vegetation, which are fundamentally oppressive, can become a means of resistance.

The paper discusses the project of independent Poland culture that emerges from the materials of “Ostoja” (“Mainstay”) Publishing Company and the editorial correspondence of “Zdrój” (“Spring”), including handwritings, in the months before its establishing and in the initial period of its Poznań biweekly release (1917–1918). It points at a frequent publication of German authors, which was interpreted in reference to the prominent in the material discourse about the Polish-German cultural transfer. In the periodical edited by Jerzy Hulewicz, Polish culture is viewed as inclusive, devoid of ressentiments and defining itself as a part of European culture, whilst the reason to formulate such a diagnosis is its attitude to German culture that trespasses the colonial events. Employing the optic of postcolonial studies allows for presenting the editorial’s concept as an idea that would strikingly develop only in the independent Poland.
