Research background: Transfer of newly created money through unconventional monetary measures follows the official European Central Bank distribution key. Yet, it does not take into account the ability of individual countries to drive growth process in other economies. Money spent to boost domestic credit provisioning in growth pole-like economies is more likely to spill over to other adjoined economies and help them to recover, even in the presence of depressed domestic demand and/or overleveraged domestic banking sector. Purpose of the article: This paper reports growth pole scores for 19 euro area countries, and compares it to the official distribution key used to transmit newly created source of funding. Methods: We modify the procedure developed in World Bank (2011) for growth pole com-putation in order to account for strength of linkages connecting member states. Findings & Value added: Our results suggest that the official distribution key might not be completely optimal once looking at the growth pole scores. Countries small in economic size (Baltic states, Slovakia and Slovenia) would benefit from a more differentiated distribution, as they strongly outperform their benchmark set by the official distribution key. On the other hand, big euro area economies do not achieve the levels used in official distribution key, taking into account their growth pole potential for other euro area economies.

This study aims to show how the polarisation of the economic space can modify the investment attractiveness of the regional space. A thesis has been put forward that the polarisation of the economic space affects the investment attractiveness of the regional space by strengthening the polarising power of the regions with the highest investment attractiveness. This study uses the results of the parameterisation of investment attractiveness of Polish regions for 2015 by gmina; it also identifies growth poles in four five-year time periods: 2008–2012, 2009–2013, 2010–2014, and 2011–2015. The study shows that the permanent growth poles are created at a distance of several dozen kilometres from large cities. It indicates the depletion of development reserves of large and medium-sized cities, especially those with extensive space management. Smaller centres are gaining location attractiveness, especially those located in the vicinity of communication routes, where access to investment areas and lower costs of running a business attract investors. Special economic zones are also located in such places. The poles and their clusters usually form large agglomerations and industrial centres in the development phase. They are usually places with high investment attractiveness, adjusted by management decisions of large enterprises, local government units and the state government. The polarisation of the economic space affects the increase of the investment attractiveness of the regions, strengthening the succession of economic production and service functions in special economic zones. Investments in road infrastructure and revitalisation processes supported by special economic zones are essential.

In the article the authors analyze the records of strategic documents and the results of conducted evaluation studies concerning cities in Podkarpackie Voivodeship, with a particular emphasis on centers considered to be the province’s growth poles. Their present situation and development perspectives are referred to the concept of four competitiveness forces (internal resources, external demand, domination, networks). The studies on which the essence of the article is based, present the situation comprehensively – both in static and dynamic terms, taking into account future trends. The capital city of the region – Rzeszów (with the metropolitan area) has a special place in the study, as it is the only city to be given a separate priority in the current development strategy. In the case of the other growth poles, the authors also try to capture some of their specificities.

W krótkim terminie przedsiębiorstwa wywołują wzrost gospodarczy w wymiarze lokalnym, który w dłuższym okresie wskutek powiązań tworzonych z podmiotami w regionie prowadzi do rozwoju w skali regionalnej.

Describing the spatial aspects of economic growth requires knowledge of phenomena occurring in economy space, its course, effects and causes. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to explain in line with the theories of the local and regional development, the regularity of economic growth in terms of spatial aspects and to identify the mechanisms that shape their creation and diffusion of economic growth. Literature studies are the basic research method for the analysis presented in the paper. Conclusion from the analysis are as follow. The entrepreneurial activity is a prerequisite for creating a sustainable growth on the base of spatial systems set up by enterprises. In the short term the companies influence the economic growth at the local level, which in the long term is spread among the regional space as a result of linkages created with companies outside the local area.

The article presents the socio-economic situation of five medium-sized cities in Central Pomerania after the territorial division reform of 1999, with particular emphasis on the condition of these cities after the COVID-19 pandemic in the conditions of the ongoing war in Ukraine since February 2022. The aim of the article is to compare the socio-economic and economic situation of five cities in Central Pomerania and to demonstrate the possibility of selecting a new “growth pole” among them, based on the analysis of the functions performed, communication accessibility and the scale and directions of development. The work presents various concepts of the potential administrative division of the region, indicating the role and functions of medium-sized towns and their importance in the settlement system. The author of the study cites the results of research and analyzes of other authors as well as concepts of administrative and functional changes covering five cities of Central Pomerania. Almost all studies emphasize that the two largest cities in Central Pomerania lost most of their former management functions and were “forced” to look for new development opportunities after losing their current socio-economic importance. At the same time, many authors note the advancement of Kołobrzeg in the settlement network of Central Pomerania and the increase in its economic potential. According to the author, improving the transport accessibility of Central Pomerania combined with the significant tourist, recreational and investment attractiveness of the region may become a key factor for changes in the hierarchy of the settlement network of medium-sized towns in Central Pomerania. Improving communication accessibility and new functions may be an impulse for the development of market services and non-market services, which may result in the emergence of a new, alternative “growth center” which could also play the role of a growing “economic locomotive of the region”. The research results and concepts for the development of the settlement network of other authors prompted me to propose my own comparative analysis and SWOT analysis of the condition of five medium-sized towns in Central Pomerania. The study also discusses the directions and possibilities of further transformations of medium-sized towns in Central Pomerania. According to the author, the post-pandemic and war socio-economic reality influences the directions and development of medium-sized cities in Central Pomerania and the possibilities of developing Kołobrzeg as an alternative growth center in Central Pomerania can now be realistically considered.
