Article contains a critique of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is considered, even by many experts, as an optimal measure of the social welfare. Meanwhile, the index has many shortcomings, and the consequence is- that despite the increasing GDP- the level of human life may be getting lower. Therefore, for several decades the economists have been looking for more adequate measures of welfare, such as economic, social and psychological measures. An interesting proposal of this type of index is the Better Life Index (BLI), proposed by the OECD, which allows making a holistic approach to the issue of social welfare. The article contains the discussion of the components of this index and the position of Poland compared to other countries in the ranking, based on BLI.

An overall assessment of economic development of the country is to be based not only on the gross domestic product, which is considered as the most important indicator, but on the comprehensive system of indicators which show different aspects of an economic life. These indicators are contained in the system of the national accounts. The article explains and analyses the national income which takes into account net outflow of the primary incomes from the country, net domestic product (GDP less consumption of fixed capital) and the indicators of real income which are influenced by the changes in the terms of trade. The indicators of final consumption, disposable income and savings of households are taken as proxy for the characteristics of welfare. The development of the Czech economy in the period 1995-2005 can be assessed differently by using the different indicators. The formation of an economic policy needs integrated picture based also on the alternative indicators.

The paper describes practical aspects of the compilation of regional input-output tables of the Czech Republic. Regional input-output tables (RIOTs) are not compiled by the official statistics. RIOTs represent a supplement of published indicators of regional accounts. The compilation of RIOTs is based on the combination of different data sources. The matrix of technical coefficients derived from national input-output tables represents the fundamental base of the tables. With respect to users, the results are consistent with macroeconomic aggregates and therefore they are directly suitable for economic modelling. Moreover, RIOTs comprise the examination of elementary relationships between regions and advanced structural analysis. The paper outlines how to develop the methodology of the regional input-output tables’ compilation and illustrates the possibility of regional structural analysis.

This paper tries to assess the process of real and nominal convergence of the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic in comparison with the other New Member States (NMS-8) and the EU-25. The methodology is based on the international comparisons of the macroeconomic indicators, especially by the means of GDP per capita indicator calculated in the purchasing power parity and on the alternative indicators of the real gross domestic income, which comprises gains or losses from the terms of the trade changes. Chapter 1 contains the theoretical and the methodological issues relating to this process. Chapter 2 examines the process of catching-up and the changes of economic position in NMS-8 within the framework of EU-25. It also deals with the trade-off between the real and nominal convergence, especially as regards the comparative price levels (CPL). The perspective of the real and the nominal convergence is analysed at the end of the paper.

During the transition to the model of sustainable development the pursuit of aims of the social progress is of importance. On the basis of analysis of the 17 basic indicators, which are measuring the different aspects of public welfare and are used in international practice, a conclusion is done, that a major indicator, enabling to take effective decisions in relation to development of the whole social-ecological-economic system, is an integral indicator - 'genuine progress indicator' (GPI). GPI settles accounts in a number of countries of the world on national and regional levels. Taking into account the national features of statistical information, the calculation of GPI is carried out for Ukraine.

The paper deals with the economic development of both the Czech and Slovak Republics between the years 1970 and 1989. It focuses on the description of economy from nowadays perspective by the commonly used gross domestic product. The estimates were prepared by experts from the Department of Economic Statistics of the University of Economics in Prague. The paper describes the main conceptual differences between the previously used System of Material Product and the currently used System of National Accounts. The most important difference was in the coverage of economic activities that were considered productive for the value added estimation. The paper shows the comparison of previously published figures for Czechoslovakia with figures newly estimated for the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The key data sources consist of officially published figures on global product, national income and symmetric input-output tables.
