Theoretical background: The article discusses the activities of organizations located in Poland in the field of sustainable development (SD). This is a specific development, which considers the needs of future generations. These activities may concern environmental, social or economic issues. The identified knowledge gap refers to the type of the most common SD-activities, possible partners in such projects, employee involvement and motivation to participate in such activities, and the perceived advantages and negative aspects of SD-projects.Purpose of the article: The purpose of the article is to evaluate the activities of organizations located in Poland in the field of sustainable development. The described issues include: the type of the most common SD-activities, possible partners in such projects, employee involvement and motivation to participate in such activities, and the perceived advantages and negative aspects of SD-projects.Research methods: The empirical material was obtained from 13 individual in-depth interviews conducted by telephone in 2018.Main findings: The analysed organizations implemented mainly social, but also ecological projects. By the implementation of projects, they cooperated mainly with NGO-partners, but only if it was necessary (e.g. if the NGO had more knowledge and experience in a specific field). Most of the projects were based on the active participation of employees in the form of volunteering; such projects had the most positive effects for the project’s goals, but also for the employees and the company. Hence, companies willingly motivated employees to participate in such projects not only by informational and organizational support, but also through various methods of distinguishing employees (e.g. volunteering gala, cup of coffee with the CEO). Companies see considerable benefits in such projects for themselves and for the staff. The perceived disadvantages are few, and in any case they can be minimized and are fully discounted by the potential benefits.
Sociology has taken a ‘back seat’ in much of the debate, within policy and social science circles, about ‘post-carbon’ societies, in which our dependence on hydrocarbons is significantly reduced. The low profile of sociology does not reflect a lack of relevance, but rather an inability to follow up on the debates being generated in several congruent areas, including geography, international relations and particularly environmental economics. Sociology has much to contribute to the discussion of societal alternatives, not least in the work being undertaken on utopias and governance. It is suggested that sociologists can enhance the role of the social science disciplines, and that of sociology in particular, by re-engaging in the wider discussions, lending a hermeneutic understanding to the current policy debates about responding to climate change.
The idea of Corporate Social Responsibility is a priority for the European economy because CSR is promoted by the European Commission as an instrument of European strategy for sustainable development. The paper presents the basic assumptions of this strategy. Although the debate on the European shape of CSR was initiated almost ten years ago some important questions are still under discussion. The paper considers some of them.
The main purpose of this paper is to show a statistical evaluation of the sustainable development issues at the transport enterprises level. Initial considerations are devoted to the discussion of theoretical issues related to sustainable development businesses. The main part of the article is devoted to the statistical analysis of the sustainable development of Polish transport companies. The results of the study made it possible to assess that the sustainable development of transport companies in 2009-2015 takes place. This development is more rapid compared to the average development of the entire enterprise sector. The average level of the indicator of sustainable development of transport enterprises in the whole analysed period it amounted to 0.89. At the same time, it should be noted that economic development is accompanied by improvement of conditions and quality of work and reduction of negative impact on natural resources.
The purpose of this study has been to identify the degree of sustainability in the development of the Province of Warmia and Mazury. The theoretical and empirical investigations were conducted between 2003–2014 based on data from the Local Data Bank. Using a comparative indicator method, 20 indicators were developed, with different directions of preference. The evaluation involves the concept of uniform preference, hence the higher the assessment indicator, the better the situation in the evaluated area unit. Our studies on the sustainable development of the Province of Warmia and Mazury suggest that the indicators measuring the environmental dimension and consequently the quality of life of the residents (in this aspect) score higher than the country’s average values. It is also optimistic that some progress, however small, can be seen in this area based on the analyzed dynamics of changes.
The topic dealt with in the paper is very timely and has assumed major importance from the viewpoint of development of research into economies based on sustainable development and application of research findings in specific solutions in the economy. The paper postulates that innovation is a fundamental and necessary instrument for implementing sustainable development throughout the whole economy. In order to confirm the thesis, first the paper attempts to identify the role of innovation in various areas of the economy. Secondly, it identifies the sources of innovation and areas of the economy which most require new innovative solutions. The study is based on literature, both domestic and foreign. The author analyses theoretical and empirical publications available on the market. Older publications turned out to be necessary and helpful in describing the evolution of the approach to sustainable development of the economy from a historical point of view. Newer works provide a basis for the compilation of a vast majority of the paper. The paper is a preliminary step in a more detailed research into various aspects of an economy based on sustainable development.
Article comprehends analysis of biosphere and ecosystem notions and shows the importance of the dynamic balance of ecosystems such processes: physic-chemical cases sustaining life on the Earth and anthropogenic threats of the social and natural environment.

The aim of this conceptual article is an attempt to answer the question if the today’s level of development of the concept of good government may already be a solid foundation for sustainable development, or it is merely one of numerous tools of this process. The aim is achieved by a review of Polish and foreign literature of the subject as well as a thorough analysis of the recent research findings in this area. The article begins from the presentation of the elaboration of the concept of sustainable development over the last half-century from the perspective of the United Nations and the European Union. Next, there are discussed the premises of the good governance concept from the perspective of the World Bank which is considered to be the creator thereof, and the European Union, which has implemented a number of good governance indices enabling assessment of the standards of governance at the level of entire EU and its individual member states. Finally, the author assessed the role of the concept of good governance in the process of implementation of the principles of sustainable development across the world.
Sustainable development means the shift towards the use of sustainable renewable Energy sources. The development of wind energy is certainly one of the most successful examples of how to do this. Wind power engineering is the fastest developing branch of the global Energy industry. In 2014, the world reached the highest level of new wind turbines installed, a capacity more than 51 GW. This means that the share of wind in total electricity production is increasing, reaching, in some countries, outstanding values (for example, 39% of total electricity consumption in Denmark in 2014). The total capacity of a new wind turbine is comparable with the biggest traditional electrical power plants and the total installed capacity of the energy system. However, it causes specific problems of interconnection, operation, and putting such installations in traditional energy systems with traditional energy sources. There are good chances that the Kaliningrad region energy system in the nearest future would have to go into isolate operation because of the disconnection of Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian energy systems from Russian networks. If that is the case, the development of wind energy in the Kaliningrad region could become one of the most attractive options for a sustainable future of power engineering.
The paper focuses on the issue of the agricultural potential of Polish voivodships in the context of sustainable development. The overall objective is to measure the potential of individual voivodship markets in 2005 and 2015 and to identify those voivodships where the development potential is the biggest, based on the changes that took place over the decade between 2005 and 2015. The authors examined the agricultural potential of individual voivodships, concentrating not only on the agricultural land resources and quality, but also on the supporting infrastructure and socio-demographic factors in the environment of this property market segment. Detailed analyses covered 7 groups of diagnostic variables: geodesic areas, agricultural land, demographic variables, population incomes, agricultural production, ecology and infrastructure. The data came from the Central Statistical Office of Poland. The authors ranked the voivodships by means of a synthetic measure which took into account the groups of variables that characterized the phenomenon under study.

Background: Consequence of growing consumer market is grow of transportation and logistics sector estimated in Europe at 42% by 2050. Therefore innovations in transportation have recently become one of key focus areas for enterprises’ supply chains and for authorities. Challenge is not only how to meet market expectations but also how to achieve this in line with sustainable development’s principles. The aim of the paper is to resolve the research problem regarding the magnitude of contribution of truck platooning to the sustainable development in the context of selected European Union’s strategies. Methods: Based on literature review, author attempted to add value by this publication by establishing the connection between truck platooning and sustainable development’s targets defined in European Union’s strategies. Results: Author was able to identify strengths and weaknesses of truck platooning in the context of sustainable development criteria: economical in terms of generating efficiencies for transport industry thanks to fuel reduction, ecological in terms of contributing to lower CO2 emission and social in terms of giving the possibility of transforming the job of a truck driver as well as increasing the safety on the roads. Conclusions: Conducted research indicates that the thesis that truck platooning fits in with the European Union’s strategies as one of the elements supporting sustainable development has been partially confirmed and partially denied. Truck platooning may support sustainable development’s targets, however due to its limitations the magnitude of its contribution is not significant.

Metody: Na podstawie przeglądu literatury, autor wniósł wkład tą publikacją, ustanawiając związek między rozwiązaniem platooningu pojazdów ciężarowych a celami zrównoważonego rozwoju określonymi w strategiach Unii Europejskiej. Wyniki: Autor zidentyfikował mocne i słabe strony platooningu pojazdów ciężarowych w kontekście celów zrównoważonego rozwoju: cel ekonomiczny osiągany poprzez redukcję zużycia paliwa, cel ekologiczny osiągany dzięki przyczynianiu się do niższej emisji CO2 oraz cel społeczny osiągany poprzez zwiększenia bezpieczeństwa na drogach. Wnioski: Przeprowadzona analiza częściowo potwierdza a częściowo odrzuca tezę o platooningu pojazdów ciężarowych jako jednego z elementów wspierających zrównoważony rozwój zgodnie z założeniami strategii Unii Europejskiej.
Sustainable development-related issues have been discussed in the public discourse worldwide since the 1960’s. The socioeconomic development theme is one of the key themes in sustainable development singled out by the European Union with a special attention paid to three crucial areas, namely: economic development, competitiveness, innovation and eco-efficiency as well as employment. Therefore, the aim of this article is to assess the implementation level of the sustainable development concept in the area of socioeconomic development in Poland compared to other Member States. In order to achieve the articles aim the following two research tasks were performed: sustainable development in terms of socioeconomic development in the EU strategic documents has been described and the sustainable development concept in the area of socioeconomic concept in Poland compared to other Member States has been analysed. The analysis showed that the gap between Poland and the ‘old’ EU has been narrowed since 2004; however, the progress in implementing the sustainable development concept into socioeconomic development was still slow comparing to both the EU-10 and EU-15. This article is based on the available reference, government documents and the analysis was conducted on the basis of secondary data provided by Eurostat.
The purpose of the article/hypothesis: The main objective of the article is to present the directions of pro-environmental activities undertaken by institutions from the financial sector operating in Poland and their significance for green transformation of the economy. In turn, an additional aim of the analysis undertaken is to show whether financial institutions have instruments that are typical for them, but at the same time are aimed directly at the process of greening the economy. Methodology: The study is of a theoretical and analytical character. In addition to a review of available domestic and foreign literature on the subject, selected good environmental practices implemented in financial sector institutions in Poland in 2016–2020 were analysed. Qualitative data analysis (content analysis of good practices) was applied. Results of the research: 94 good environmental practices from 24 financial sector institutions were analysed. Different subject and object orientations of the good practices were observed. It was found that through the implementation of environmental activities, financial institutions can build a positive image in their surroundings. In terms of issues related to green transformation, a special role was assigned to banks, which can offer green banking products. Products of this type are directly aimed at supporting investments whose role is to change the existing way of economy to a more sustainable one.
The aim of the paper is to justify why contemporary economics must be reoriented from the direction of Economic Growth to the direction of Sustainable Development. Human society is at a deadly curve. The Economic crisis is only one slice of Gordon’s Knot of Crises of our Civilization. The Economy is facing system challenges without precedence. Reasons for this situation are different fetishes of present positive and normative economics. The author explores the main aspects of diagnoses, prognoses, analyses, assessments, and present solutions concerning economy. Of fundamental importance are: the essence of the global crisis, new challenges facing Western civilization in the near future, and fundamental misunderstandings in the proposed solutions of crucial problems. The one chance for an adequate solution to the critical situation is the Strategy of Sustainable Development. In Poland this strategy is absent in mainstream economics as a theory of economy and as the foundation of rational policy. It concerns a very broad front of economic sciences and economic technologies. Economic academic education is also not adequate to the very serious situation facing graduates in the future. Consciousness, knowledge and abilities of economic professionals are good for the past, not for the nearest future. In Poland, an additional problem is a lack of common economic academic education in English. Present economics and economy must be verified with many original (not translated) settlements and conclusions concerning sustainable development from economics and from other sciences and from reality outside economy. Of crucial importance have been settlements and conclusions of ecology and of sociology on the basis of information technologies.
The current issues concerning healthcare institutions are generated by: aging of the population; the increase in prevalence of non-communicable diseases, even in low/medium income countries; the continuous increase of indirect costs generated by chronic diseases; the necessity of new- patient-specific oriented therapies; the need of translation of fundamental research into practice; need of applicability of prevention strategies; an important segment of the working population becomes inactive; migration of healthcare professionals. An essential condition for the sustainable development of any community is the health and the maintenance of the health of its population, and it is essential that the institutions involved in the process adapt to the constant change of the society: the medical academia not only develops health professionals, but conducts research, helps implementing healthcare programmes, develops future strategies, and influences the political systems; the hospitals need to adapt to growing populations; the communities should be involved in out-patient healthcare and prevention of diseases; governmental institutions adapt to the concept of sustainable development in various ways: funding fundamental research, applying nation-wide programmes for prevention and care, help of disadvantaged population, funding medical universities.
The sustainable development concept has become an extraordinarily important formative element of all activities taken by both law makers and the society, including entrepreneurs, for favour of broadly comprehended natural environment protection. This article presents the analysis of practical implementation of the sustainable development concept in manufacturing companies in Poland in the years 2010-2012. It also verifies directions of expenditures made towards environmental protection fixed assets, depending upon investment types, i.e. whether they were end-of-pipe investments or integrated technology investments. It was found that in the industrial processing sector in Poland, the highest average share of expenditures was associated with air and water protection fixed assets, whereas, in case of amounts spent on air protection means, a fall was observed in their share, and an increase in case of water protection. Furthermore, end-of-pipe investments dominated within the structure, whereas an increase was observed in the share end-of-pipe investments, and a fall in the share of integrated technology investments. It was also found that total amounts spent on environmental protection fixed assets per one company and per one employee increased, and the share of this type of expenditures in the total value of fixed assets obtained from manufacturing companies’ investment activities increased as well.
The article presents the influence of unequal access to green space on human health, resulting in the formation of health inequalities. The work is based on the hypothesis that unequal access to green areas in the place of residence and leisure, largely determined by the level of income and the scope of implementation of sustainable development strategy by the state, contributes to deepening social health inequalities. The article analyses the attitude towards the impact of access to green space on health present in official documents and related researchIt also identifies a direct link between limited access to green space and social health inequalities. In the last part of the article, legal regulations concerning access to greenery in Poland are presented.
The aim of the article: The aim of the article is to evaluate and analyze the dynamics of electricity prices for households in the European Union member states (EU-27) in the period 2011–2020. The study also focuses on the key components of electricity prices in the countries analyzed. The discussed issues are important from the socio-economic point of view. It refers to the issue of sustainable development, where electricity prices are addressed in relation to the problem of energy poverty of households. Methodology: The study is of a theoretical and analytical character. In addition to the review of available dnational and foreign literature, Eurostat data on electricity prices for households in the EU-27 were analysed. Moreover, the paper presents the application of a selected cluster analysis method, i.e. the k-means method, to assess the situation of the EU-27 countries in terms of electricity prices for households in the analysed period of 2011–2020. Results of the research: The result of the analyses undertaken is a presentation of the share of VAT and other taxes and levies in the price of electricity for households. The analyses showed differences between the countries in the structure of establishing the electricity price for households. Only in three countries (Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia) it was found that there was no share of other taxes and levies in the electricity price. In turn, the applied k-means method contributed to obtaining the division of countries into four groups reflecting the differentiation in terms of the amount of electricity price for households in the period under study.
