Financial and accounting scandals became a synonym of private business activities in the 1st decade of the 21st century. They contributed to the creation of such theoretical concepts as: creative accounting, accounting engineering and, in the Polish economic reality, variant accounting. This article presents a theoretical overview of a financial or accounting scandal in the Polish economic environment. It attempts to answer the question whether the Polish balance law endorses the creation of procedures, such as those seen in the case of Enron and WorldCom. In order to attain this goal, a distinction was established between accounting engineering (using the current, legally-binding balance law), creative accounting (covering unlawful practices), and praxeological accounting. The attitudes of particular accountants were analyzed using the concept of business ethics.

Creative accounting and aggressive accounting are perceived differently among researchers. On the one hand, they are treated as the same concepts, while on the other as independent, or are presented as similar points. In Polish publications, one can find an approach that aggressive accounting is convergent with accounting fraud, and is a negative part of creative accounting which also has a positive dimension. This paper aimed to reveal statutory auditors' perceptions of creative accounting, in particular, as well as aggressive accounting and accounting fraud. A survey was conducted in November-December 2021 among 52 chartered accountants in Poland. The results indicate that the most recognised term among financial auditors is creative accounting, which they perceive mainly as manipulation, fraud or accounting falsification, and therefore negatively. In contrast, aggressive accounting is not known or identified by the respondents.
In the conditions of exceptional uncertainty in which enterprises have to operate, the issue of the reliability of financial statements becomes particularly important. Unfortunately, we can observe trends aimed at embellishing them or deliberately misleading the readers of financial statements. Manipulation of reporting data has an unfavorable impact not only on the company, but also on its immediate or distant environment. For this purpose, an attempt was made to define the concepts of creative accounting and aggressive accounting. A survey was conducted to examine the perception of these phenomena among accountants and financial students.

It has been supported by the empirical part of the work, which includes the presentation and analysis of examples of methods and ways of falsifying accounting records and financial reporting. On the basis of the cited examples, attempts were made to indicate the motives of the frauds and their impact on falsifying the real picture of the financial condition of the economic entity.

Teoretyczna część dotyczy szczegółowego omówienia: istoty, determinant, skutków i metod ograniczania oszustw księgowych.

Purpose: The purpose of the article is to indicate that, theoretically and practically, Benford’s Law can be applied in order to detect accounting frauds. Methodology/approach: The paper provides an overview of current regulations and experts’ opinions published in the existing literature and internet sources. Moreover, data analysis was used as a research method. Findings: The results of assessing the conformity of the first two significant digits of distribution of foreign revenues from the sales of finished products to Benford’s Law (using the chi-square goodness of fit test) showed that in the case of a proper accounting process, one cannot reject the hypothesis that the data conform to Benford’s Law. On the other hand, the analysis of intentionally falsified foreign revenues led to the conclusion that in the case of an improper accounting process, data, in general, does not conform to Benford’s Law. Research limitations/implications: In the study, it was assumed that the human mind generates false val-ues of accounting entries, and the number of attempts to commit fraud was limited to 10. Originality/value: The article extends the existing knowledge of using Benfordʼs Law in detecting ac-counting fraud in the Polish literature.
