The article indicates the role of women's literary 'Bluszcz' magazine (X.2008–…) in motivating contacts with books and developing of reading habits. Its basic task in service of literacy is reinforcing a purely mechanical skill of reading, the effectiveness of reading technique increases and so secondary illiteracy is prevented. But the discussed periodical can also be perceived as a medium presenting various literary and paraliterary texts directly on its pages. 'Bluszcz' is also a significant source of information about books, inspires the interests of the readers, promotes certain names, titles and genres using various types of criticism. That is why especially women's periodicals create bestsellers and form the market of the popular female fiction.
In the history of the Polish press of the interwar period, a provincial publishing center located in Żnin, in Pałuki region, played a major role. In the 1930s, Żnin was home to a dynamically developing press company, offering high-circulation titles of nationwide coverage (Moje Powieści, Moja Przyjaciółka). The first step towards the creation of the future Publishing House of Alfred Ksycki was the establishment of the Pałuczanin newspaper in 1927, which formed the basis for subsequent publishing initiatives. The periodical, including a few supplements, was edited in accordance with the principle of “everything for everyone”, and signalled the upcoming era of mass press. One of the ways of acquiring new readers, was the printing of novels in episodes, which started already in the first issue of the newspaper with a mini rural novel by Stanisław Kluczek, a folk writer of sensational historical novels. The newspaper featured 30 other popular novels from authors associated with the region (Wanda Brzeska, Jan Andrzej Kraśny, Alojzy Kuzio, Franciszek Ksawery Tuczyński), but also those known from 19th-century French newspapers (Émile Richebourg, Jules de Gastyne). The article presents the characteristics of all the titles published through the newspaper.
Edited by Konstancja Hojnacka (ca. 1880–1943) in the town of Orlęta, the journal Świat Kobiecy-Rekord was known in Żnin in the early 1930s, when the most-read female press title of the interwar period, Moja Przyjaciółka created in the local Alfred Krzycki’s Publishing House, was not yet planned. In 1939, its subscribers received a guide to good manners, entitled Cohabitation with People, the only book publication by the journal’s Lviv collaborator. Thanks to the high circulation, comparable to school textbooks, it found its way into many Polish homes. The article presents the relationship of the writer, press and radio editor, esotericist and social activist from the borderland metropolis with Moja Przyjaciółka in her best years 1937–1939.

W 1939 r. do jej abonentek trafił poradnik dobrego wychowania pt. Współżycie z ludźmi, jedyna publikacja książkowa lwowskiej współpracowniczki czasopisma. Dzięki wysokiemu, porównywanemu z podręcznikami szkolnymi nakładowi znalazła się ona w wielu polskich domach. W artykule przedstawiono związki literatki, redaktorki prasowej i radiowej, ezoterystki i aktywistki społecznej z kresowej metropolii z „Moją Przyjaciółką” w jej najlepszych latach 1937–1939.

The aim of the article is to examine the status of Polish criminal literature in the most widely read women’s weekly of People’s Poland in the years 1948–1989. It uses the method of content analysis, focusing mainly on fictional texts and reviews, notes, lists of new publications on the book market. All the issues are listed in chronological order, adequate to the changing publishing formula of the weekly. The results of the study showed that “Przyjaciółka” did not bring anything new to the development of the Polish crime novel, nor was it a channel to promote it in a wide circulation of readers. Nevertheless, its pages show a change in the perception of this popular genre of prose – from negation to acceptance in the mid-1970s.

The article describes results of the survey conducted among the students of information science and book studies Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun between the years of 2007-2008 concerning elementary level of their reading abilities. Over 100 students of the first and the second year were asked to check the speed and comprehension of their reading on the ground of some text chosen from the field of their study. The results were not so satisfying - average speed of their reading (199 words per one minute) was on a level with all adult Polish people standards (200 w/m) but below approximate range established for students population (200–220 w/m).

Reports of a serial murderer of women operating in the late 1920s in Düsseldorf, hailed as a ‘vampire’ or ‘ghost’ were among them. The article shows the ways of exploiting this plot in a local newspaperby comparing it with other selected titles: Gazeta Wągrowiecka, Kurier Poznański, Dziennik Poznański, Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny.

Artykuł pokazuje sposoby eksploatacji tego wątku w piśmie lokalnym poprzez porównanie go w innymi wybranymi tytułami: Gazetą Wągrowiecką, Kurierem Poznańskim, Dziennikiem Poznańskim, Ilustrowanym Kurierem Codziennym.
From 1948 to 1989, Przyjaciółka was one of the most popular women’s magazines. One of the pillars of its success was its skillfully edited literary section. Its homogenized format encompassed artistic prose, fictionalized documentary narratives, classic 19th-century short stories and novels, extensive novels on the themes of production and collective farms by representatives of the younger generation of socialist realism, escapist romance and love fiction of Western origins for entertainment purposes, and contemporary, problematized psychological and social prose. Konopnicka, Gojawiczyńska, and Orzeszkowa were published there together with Wanda Wasilewska, Margaret Mitchell, Elfriede Jelinek, Colette, and Pearl S. Buck. Despite the rich collection of names (over 280), there were significantly fewer female authors in the magazine’s segment than men (not even 30% of the entire fiction repertoire), which raises the question of the ‘gender’ of the weekly as a women’s medium, especially in its literary (and related) context. The aim of this article is to present the status of women’s prose, both printed in the weekly and recommended to readers in the ‘On Books’ (later ‘Among Books’) review column, based on content, bibliographic, statistical and comparative analysis. The results are presented according to the authors’ cultural affiliation, reflecting the contemporary political world order, and then chronologically, reflecting the changing publishing formula of Przyjaciółka weekly.

W latach 1948–1989 Przyjaciółka należała do najpopularniejszych tytułów kobiecych. Jednym z filarów jej powodzenia był umiejętnie redagowany dział literacki. W jego zhomogenizowanej formule mieściła się proza artystyczna, fabularyzowane opowieści dokumentarne, XIX-wieczna klasyka nowelistyczna i powieściowa, obszerne powieści o tematyce produkcyjnej i kołchozowej przedstawicielek młodego pokolenia realizmu socjalistycznego, eskapistyczna fikcja romansowo-miłosna zachodniej proweniencji o charakterze rozrywkowym, współczesna sproblematyzowana proza psychologiczno-obyczajowa. Na łamach tygodnika teksty Konopnickiej, Gojawiczyńskiej, Orzeszkowej, sąsiadowały z utworami Wandy Wasilewskiej, Margaret Mitchell, Elfriede Jelinek, Colette czy Pearl S. Buck. Mimo bogatego repertuaru nazwisk (ponad 280) udział kobiet-autorek w omawianym segmencie pisma pozostawał wyraźnie niższy niż mężczyzn i nie przekraczał 30% całości publikowanej prozy. Wyniki zaprezentowane zostały według przynależności kulturowej autorek, odzwierciedlającej ówczesny polityczny porządek świata, a następnie chronologicznie – adekwatnie do zmieniającej się formuły wydawniczej Przyjaciółki.
