This paper analyses and critically compares three approaches to social and political values: utilitarianism, liberalism and communitarianism, which postulate different views on justice and on ways to make society better. We can establish a justified ap-proach to the promotion of justice as a principal value of the collective life on the basis of public debates and democratic civic pressure: we can build a just society based on communitarian values such as solidarity, mutual aid and respect for the values and ide-als of each community.
This paper discusses certain major challenges to the justification of ethical cosmo-politanism`s existence. They can be understood in the context of effects of the global economy on human life and values, due its social imbalances and inequalities. The foremost guiding idea of ethical cosmopolitanism maintains that all humans must be considered to be equal. However, this postulate is questioned in the globalization era.
The theme of this article is the concept of community in the writings of Charles Taylor. It treats as its starting point both the significance attributed by him to this concept as well as his reluctance to being labelled a communitarian. The reconstruction of the concept is based on two of Taylor’s major works, Sources of the Self. The Making of the Modern Identity and A Secular Age. In the former the focus is on the notion of moral space which is deployed in a critique of individualist ontology, but which does not lead him to claim that the community has some special status. The reconstruction of the latter book focuses on the description of developments leading to modern forms of sociality that have superseded previous forms of social organization that were based, to a large degree, on local communities. In conclusion, I describe Taylor’s normative concept of community which is an integral part of his vision of “fullness”, which transcends both individualism and the traditional, exclusive communities.
The purpose of this paper is an interpretation of the social and political thought of the Solidarity movement in the light of the political philosophy of communitarianism. In the first part of the paper, the controversies between liberalism and communitarianism are characterized in order to outline the communitarian response toward the authoritarian/totalitarian challenge. In the second part, the programme of a self-governing republic created by Solidarity is interpreted in the spirit of communitarianism. I reconstruct the ideal vision of human being expressed in of ficial trade union’s documents and essays of Solidarity’s advisers (e.g., Stefan Kurowski and Jozef Tischner), and the efforts of the movement for telling the truth about history and its vision of Polish history. Also, I interpret the programme of Self-Governing Republic adopted during the First National Convention of Delegates of Solidarity. In these programmatic documents of Solidarity, one may find ideas characteristic both of the communitarian and liberal political philosophy. However, the liberal ones—including, primarily, the guarantee of human and citizens’ rights, and of individual liberties—were subordinated to the postulate of reconstructing the national and social community. In the course of transformation after 1989, these communitarian elements of Solidarity programme, incompatible with liberal ideological agenda, have been erased.
The main goal of the article is to present the origins and meaning of the basic assumptions of the British New Labour Party within the context of communitarianism thinking of state and society. It is an undeniable fact that the architects of New Labour incorporated some communitarianism ideas and concepts. It seemed especially important to focus on communitarianism values which, as modernizes of Labour Party argued, played the major means for achieving their principal aims. Whether the political project of New Labour could be treated as communitarianism proposition of fairer community becomes questionable. It looks that the initiators of New Labour Party were focused on creating a political program that would be an alternative to experiencing crises liberal individualism, and proposed by communitarianism ideas might serve as a meaningful bond joining the whole project.
This paper aims to redeem part of the Enlightenment project through a critical appreciation of David Hume’s practical philosophy. It argues that Hume’s practical philosophy, if interpreted correctly, is immune to two major charges leveled against the Enlightenment in critical theories and in philosophical ethics, respectively. One trend is represented by Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno, who claim that inherent to the advocacy of rationality typical of the Enlightenment is the irrational adoration of instrumental reason, which obliterates individual particularity, commodifies human relationships, and oppresses the human urge to express passionately. The other trend is represented by Alasdair McIntyre, who claims that the Enlightenment project is doomed to fail because it ventures to justify a historically and culturally conditioned morality as universal. Against the first critique, I argue that Hume’s reliance on the affective tendencies to derive a standard of moral values avoids the idolatry of rationality. Against the second critique, I argue that Hume’s characterization of virtues as qualities of personality that facilitate interpersonal relationships allows ample room for the cultural variance of values.
The Author convinces that the dispute between legal positivism and the natural law theory takes place not only in terms of the philosophy of law, but also within political philosophy. At the end of the twentieth century this dispute within political philosophy took the form of polemics between communitarianism and social contract theories. The models of law characteristic of these two political philosophies turn out to be analogous to the models offered by the natural law theory and legal positivism. The natural law theory is present in the communitarian standpoint, while the legal‑positivist approach is relevant to social contract theories. Parallelism does not obviously stand for identity and therefore there may indeed appear new and original features of these two competing approaches to law.

The article’s goal is to reconstruct the Sandelian critique of the Rawlsian vision of person and to confirm that differences in positions of both philosophers on competences of the individual as a self-originated source of moral standards are not so vivid as the author of ‘Liberalism and the Limits of Justice’ tries to convince us. In my attempt I follow considerations of Will Kymlicka who perceives communitarianism as a voice within the scope of liberal intellectual tradition; therefore, the Sandelian vision of person as a moral being seems to coincide the Rawlsian position on it rather than to contrast it.
The article is devoted to the problem of the place ascribed to liberal education (and most of all to humanities as constituting its essential part) in contemporary political thought. In times when many rightist as well as leftist thinkers diagnose a crisis of liberal democracy and its educational system, displaying much anxiety about the still-lowering level of citizens’ willingness to participate in a public sphere, some of them propose their diagnosis of such situation and postulates of reform aimed at raising the level of citizens’ engagement in democratic life. One of the means to achieving that goal is implementation of the idea of liberal education, which might work in favor of students’ character development, their acquisition of a holistic view of reality, and their consciousness of the fact of overlapping character of relations binding individual and communal wellbeing. The article aims at presenting theoretical ways of defending humanities in face of contemporary restatement of the role of liberal education in Western societies. The course of argument is following: firstly the transition made in XXth century from “liberal education” to “education to liberalism” (resulting in specialization and vocational character of science) will be traced. Then the opinions of critics to such model of education will be shown, focusing on the representatives of three political doctrines: republicanism, communitarianism and liberalism. In case of each of these group of thinkers their characteristic attitude towards humanities, will be displayed.
The article is devoted to the issues of ideological identity of New Urbanism and it is an attempt to expand the general knowledge about this particular phenomenon of contemporary urbanism and a complete idea of social life. It also undertakes, to a lesser extent, a polemic with some of the theses of its critics. The article adopts a method of deduction. First of all, the official declarations of the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU), including, in particular, the Charter of the New Urbanism were analyzed. Then, the writings and publications of the precursors and founders of New Urbanism were examined. A mention was also made of the theories presented by various groups, which are now the point of reference for New Urbanists as their mentors. The conducted analyses allowed us to lay out the thesis that research conclusions are sufficient to identify New Urbanism as a conservative, or more precisely – a traditionalist movement, which aims for creative improvement of the good habits in town planning and restoration of the continuity of cultural and spatial development of local communities. New Urbanism is a defined, comprehensive philosophy of a city, understood as an idea of a diverse and family-based living community set in specific spatial conditions. This idea of local “urbanity” – a concept of social life represented in New Urbanism, fits in with the ideal, Aristotelian republican system (politeia). New Urbanism represents at least five out of six fundamental attributes of a conservative mindset: realism in the judgment of reality; affection for the proliferating variety and mystery of traditional life; faith that man must take control of his anarchic impulses; conviction that a civilized society requires order and classes; and acceptance of the apparent principle that change and progress are not identical. Striving for an equilibrium between the freedom of choice and the social responsibility is fully in line with a conservative mindset, too. Thereby, New Urbanism became a counterbalance to both the neoliberal, consumer-driven exaggerated individualism and neo-Marxist collectivism.

W pracy przyjęto metodę dedukcji, analizując w pierwszej kolejności oficjalne deklaracje Congress for the New Urbanism, w tym przede wszystkim Kartę Nowej Urbanistyki.
W swoich artykułach, książkach i wykładach wielokrotnie podejmuje on problematykę sprawiedliwości, analizując jej rozwój, zastosowanie i wynikające z tego konsekwencje.

The concept of justice has been constantly discussed from ancient times to the present day, which shows its importance and complexity. It reveals its diversity in the context of cultural differences, philosophical concepts, ideas and schools of thought. The extremely popular Harvard University professor Michael Sandel also undertook his analysis of the issue of justice. In his articles, books and lectures, he repeatedly addresses the issue of justice, analyzing its development, application and the resulting consequences of its application. At the same time, he does not avoid unambiguous assessments and expressing his opinions. This attitude allows us to discover and analyze his own concept of justice, seen in the perspective of a virtue fulfilling an important role in public life. His reflections on the question of justice reveal the assumptions of a broader philosophical perspective, referred to as communitarianism.
Modern legal philosophy provides us with two main types of global justice theories. Distributive or egalitarian theories claim that justice requires striving to achieve the global equality from us not only in legal but also economic dimension. On the other hand, there are many theories focusing on providing and keeping only „minimal standard” (i.e. human rights) and questioning the global equality as an ideal. In the article I investigate which type of theories describes contemporary international relations in the most accurate way (claiming that „minimal standard” theory does it) and I also wonder which type is more legitimate. In my opinion, considerations devoted to the question of global justice give us a well-established background for further studies on immigration policy, especially in the context of recent EU frontiers incidents.
W artykule zostaje podjęta próba zinterpretowania twórczości klasyka socjologii Emile’a Durkheima jako prekursora komunitaryzmu, współczesnego nurtu teoretycznego i ruchu społecznego. Rozważania dotyczą pośredniego charakteru obu koncepcji oraz zawartej w nich refleksji moralnej; analizie poddane zostaje też rozumienie jednostki i jej relacji ze społeczeństwem. Zasadnicze podobieństwo, jakie łączy francuskiego myśliciela z podejściem komunitariańskim, polega na postrzeganiu świata społecznego w kategoriach pośrednich, co sytuuje obie koncepcje pomiędzy klasycznymi dychotomiami: liberalizmem i konserwatyzmem, indywidualizmem i wspólnotowością, woluntaryzmem i determinizmem itp.

The article focuses on the attempt to interpret the work of Emile Durkheim, a classic of sociology, as a precursor of communitarianism, which is a contemporary theoretical approach and a social movement. The intermediary character of both concepts and of the moral reflection included in them, as well as the understanding of an individual and its relations with a society are analyzed. The perception of the social world in intermediary categories places both approaches, the Durkheimian and the communitarian, in-between the classical dichotomies: liberalism and conservatism, individual and community, voluntarism and determinism, etc.

The article is an attempt at summary of the discussion on republicanism of the Polish Solidarity and the Eastern-European dissidence movement of 1970s and 1980s that took place after the fall of communism in 1989. The author comments on the debate’s sources and most important threads, placing them within the context of contemporary political philosophy. She presents three ways in which republicanism has been evoked in the debate: as a historical analogy, as a tradition that is intellectually coherent with the movement’s ideas, and as the movement’s legacy. In this way, the author comes closer to choosing a type of republicanism that corresponds with the Polish experience, and, what is more important, to evaluating the debate itself.

Dotyczą one historycznych analogii ruchu dysydenckiego, ideowego pokrewieństwa ruchu i tradycji republikańskiej oraz dziedzictwa ruchu w dyskursie publicznym i rozwiązaniach ustrojowych.
Stwierdzenie to prowadzi do dalszych badań. W celu uniknięcia pewnego dualizmu w percepcji osoby zakorzenionego we wskazanych wyżej stanowiskach rozwinięte zostaje podejście personalistyczne.

This article endeavours to sketch the debate about the concept of a person in the realm of bioethics. Initially, it sets out three understandings of the issue, namely the concept of a person in naturalistic philosophy, in the current of communitarianism and in one of the humanistic positions. The analysis of these approaches lead to the conclusion that a human person is perceived either as an empirical and psychological entity or as a free subjectivity creating him/herself. This thesis provides stimulation for further research. In order to avoid a kind of dualism in the perception of a person stemming from the stances outlined above, the personalistic approach is developed. This points out that a human being should be depicted as one indivisible entity unifying in itself more strictly its self, a subjective aspect of the person, with nature-body aspect which is an objective facet of being human. Given this personalistic perspective, a person comes out as an embodied subjectivity formed by the unique personal act of existence. In this article, such a concept of a person is argued as a vital support in the complex field of bioethical dilemmas.
The paper presents the ideas of communitarianism about morality and family. It presents in the first part the liberal and communitarian concept of morality (social and historical conditioning of morality, sources of morality and values, the idea of person and liberty). The main topics in the second part are: the family as the place of moral education (transfer of values), the pattern of the family, the ethos of labor, the objects of moral education (selfcontrol, altruism, religiosity) and the pathologies of family life (divorces, moves, self-interest).
The primary scientific aim of the article is to analyze the significance of freedom of speech in the context of the relationship between the individual and the community. The study seeks to determine whether the current freedom of speech provisions effectively protect minority groups subjected to hate speech. The main research problem is to determine whether current freedom guarantees delineate clear boundaries for the exercise of free speech that do not infringe on the interests of any social group. The analysis employs legal research methods, including dogmatic legal, doctrinal, and theoretical legal analysis. Balancing the interests of the individual and the community concerning freedom of speech remains one of the most significant challenges in contemporary constitutional law and human rights protection.

Wyważenie interesów jednostki i wspólnoty w zakresie wolności słowa pozostaje jednym z najważniejszych wyzwań współczesnego prawa konstytucyjnego i ochrony praw człowieka.
W artykule poddano analizie zagadnienie praktycznych implikacji filozofii liberalnej i komunitariańskiej w dziedzinie praw człowieka.

The article analyses the issue of the practical implications of liberal and communitarian philosophies in regard to human rights. Since human rights are the basic element of the axio-normative system of Western culture, expressing universal moral ideals, questioning these rights is particularly problematic. Communitarianism and liberalism are two philosophies which differ considerably in terms of methodology, ontology, and axiology, which consequently leads to their different positions, especially on social and economic rights. Neoliberalism, dominant in the last decades of the 20th century, is critical towards first-generation human rights, whereas for communitarians these rights are an important element of strengthening the community. There are, however, such liberal theories (e.g. L. T. Hobhouse’s or J. Rawls’) which can agree with second-generation rights. On the other hand, communitarianism (e.g. Ch. Taylor) does not imply sacrificing first-generation rights for the good of the community.

Among the theoretical concepts attempting to explain the principles of the establishment, peration, and the goals that the corporation has to fulfill in the socio-economic reality, there is an ideological dispute. On the one hand, dominate contractual concept, based on the freedom of contracted parties and strontium traders, drawing inspiration from the concept of liberalism. This approach enhances the so-called shareholder primacy with trust that the objectives set for the corporation will be fulfilled by maximizing profit for the shareholders- “owners” of corporations. On the other hand, theoretical concepts remain, in which the corporation is a formation of social nature, or established through a concession granted by the State, which take into account the interests of wider audience (beyond the „owners”) that aims at fulfilling various goals, not excluding redistribution. The latter approach is closer to the communitarian concept. The author wishes to identify how these theoretical approaches are linked together by building the basis for a system of corporate governance in Europe and Poland. Despite the noticeable trends in the construction of corporate governance on the model of the liberal US system, the threads of corporate social responsibility and emphasis on the development of the corporate framework by the state, or the European Union, are also visible in our systems. What the path of development of a corporation and its public perception will be, as well as defined goals and purpose of it’s structures, that is yet to be determined.
