This article discusses the notion of paradigms and its applicability in linguistics. After reviewing relevant literature, the article assumes a broad understanding of the term, influenced by the work of Kuhn and classical approach to paradigms, Goodman on ways of worldmaking, Chalmers on argumentation and progress in philosophy, and Santana on ontologies of language. The author postulates the existence of three possible paradigms in the study of language: the formal paradigm (where language is considered to be a formal object), the mentalist paradigm (language as an instrument of thought), and the communicative paradigm (language as an instrument of communication). The article concentrates on generative grammar, developed over the years by Noam Chomsky, and demonstrates how generativism changed in its approach to language and grammar, exemplifying both the formal paradigm (early generative grammar, culminating with Syntactic Structures), and the mentalist paradigm (manifest already in Aspects of the Theory of Syntax and Cartesian Linguistics), with its recent focus on biolinguistics.

The article discusses the notion of predication, and its definitions in logic and linguistics. Definitions suggested by Carnap, Reichenbach, and Quine have implications for the understanding of predication in linguistics. The article focuses on structural approaches to predication and discusses their consequences for a linguistic theory of predication, especially within the generative approach to syntax. It is claimed that the relation between the predicate (function) and the subject (argument) is monadic and triggered by an appropriate operator.

The article discusses key concepts in contemporary philosophy of language (especially analytic), and also philosophy of linguistics, and linguistic philosophy, and the relations between these domains. Whereas linguistics, the scientific study of language, is concerned with theoretical and applied analyses of human natural language and with constructing appropriate levels of linguistic representation, philosophy of language provides (philosophical) investigations into the phenomenon of language in general, concentrating especially on the problems of meaning, reference, truth, and understanding. More recent approaches to philosophy of language considerably extend this field of investigation. Linguistic philosophy can be described as an approach to the philosophy of language, a philosophical method; further on, philosophy of linguistics offers philosophical reflections on linguistic inquiries and linguistic theories. The article investigates mutual relations among these disciplines, offers necessary terminological clarification, and provides an overview of recent studies devoted to philosophy of language.

The article briefly discusses the questions about language posed by Noam Chomsky and John Searle. This issue is discussed within the broad context of analytic philosophy; the author suggests that it is necessary to establish an appropriate (neuropsychological, social, abstract) ontological background for such a discussion to make sense. Additionally, the article mentions changes in the contemporary cognitive-analytic paradigm.

Preface

The disciplines of general philosophy, philosophy of language, and linguistics have in common an interest in saying what it is that we can infer: what meaning, what truth; and how those inferences are to be justified. To do this, philosophers and linguists have endlessly discussed the concepts of truth and of meaning, and also the means of inference and its degrees of reasonableness and reliability. These debates do not narrow down to definitive answers, rather they broaden and spread their concerns into ever-widening fields of investigation [...].
