Polish sports vocabulary uses a variety of sources, including lexical elements of various origin that include foreign lexical elements. A fairly significant part of this vocabulary consists of words and expressions that include in their composition onomastic, toponymic and anthroponymic components. An analysis of this vocabulary proves that, from among sports terms with the onomastic component, nominations that stem from the Mediterranean, Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon traditions are decidedly dominant, whereas those of Polish origin are rare and infrequent.

The authors study different equivalents of the Hebrew word Eden in selected old and new Slavic translations of the Bible. The equivalents of this lexeme have been excerpted from several Slavic translations of the Bible, which were selected on the basis of diverse criteria. The translations are presented chronologically and old translations are opposed to the new ones. They represent three groups of Slavic languages: West Slavic, East Slavic and South Slavic and are connected with the base of translation, i.e. the original text and/or Greek or Latin text. They can also be classified according to religious denomination and the strategy of the translation. The observation of those equivalents enables us to see not only their variety and mutual influence among translations but also the struggle of Slavic translators with a very difficult language matter. Many factors were important in that struggle: genetic and structural distances between Semitic and Slavic languages, different perceptions of reality in distant cultures, the discrepancy between biblical and Slavonic realities and the influence of religious denomination. Another important factor was the state of biblical knowledge at the time – incomparably poorer in the case of the oldest Slavic translations in comparison to modern ones.
The paper analyses expressive modifications of proper names in the current media. Based on a survey of the existing literature, it explains terms connected to the process of linguistic expressivization, and based on examples excerpted from the media between 2001 and 2015, it makes an attempt at classifying the various linguistic formal-semantic efforts. The analysis has shown that formal-semantic modification aimed at expressivization of proper names can be implemented using different word- -formational, grammatical, syntactic, and graphical operations.
In order to encourage the minimal reader to reach for Russian literature, one needs to present elements of the foreign reality in such a way that would encourage them to get to know alien phenomena and extend their cognitive base, rather than discouraging them with complexity and strangeness. One of the elements which are rooted in culture and which require proper management in translation are proper names. In translation from Russian into Polish it is worth focusing on managing hypocorisms (diminutives), colloquial forms of vocative and patronymics.
In the paper, the chosen cases of using the proper names revealing the residual orality in the term of Walter Ong are presented. What is characteristic, proper names are used in the extensive, aggregative formulas, in their full-forms rather than in potential abbreviated forms (e.g. name of Polish political party Prawo i Sprawiedliwość instead its abbreviation PiS). Another feature is formulas with the stable collocations, used for strengthen the persuasive value of the utterances. Another residual orality features are: agonistically toned and homeostatic – proper names in those utterances may assist in the political rhetoric, or ever strengthen the creation of the new political myths.
Proper names and realia are an integral part of literary translation. Often, they are intertwined and lexemes denoting realia are linguistically realized in the form of propria. The main aim of the article is to determine when proper names, within the transfer of literary text into another cultural environment, are approached as a translatological problem of realia. The article is based on their cultural characteristics, zero equivalence and high association potential. We disagree with the assumption of many authors that anthroponyms do not belong to the cathegory
The subject of the study is German traces in Melchior Wańkowicz’s reportages published in the “Anoda i katoda” [“The Anode and Cathode”] series, in the part titled “Kraj lat dziecinnych” [The Land of Childhood]. This paper presents the vocabulary of German origin and Polish vocabulary referring to Germany and discusses common words and proper names, mostly of German origin, including quotations and lexis more or less assimilated in the Polish language. Appellatives are classified into parts of speech. The prevailing group of proper names comprises surnames, divided into two groups: German surnames and Polonised surnames. Another issue discussed in this article refers to the ways in which the presented vocabulary underwent Polonisation. Additionally, an interesting question is why the author, born in the Russian partition territory, uses so many words related to Germany. Wańkowicz refers to history, which justifies lexical items of German provenance, e.g. Ober-Ost. The presence of numerous surnames of German origin may result from Wańkowicz’s memories, e.g. Gebethner and Wolff are publishers of his story for children, and the surname Einstein is referred to in relation to Warsaw. As for the presence of appellatives, they were probably well-assimilated and frequently used, since most of them are not distinguished in any way in the text by the author. Some of the above-quoted Germanisms (appellatives and proper names) were Polonised in terms of vowels and consonants and through the application of Polish wordforming suffixes.
The purpose of the article is to review the question of the use of the Proto-Polish ethnonym Polanie. According to the opinion traditionally adopted in historiography, this name referred to one of the tribes inhabiting GreaterPoland (the territories of Kuyavia) whose territorial conquests led to the establishment of the Polish State. On the basis of a semantic analysis of the earliest written occurrences of this name, the author develops the thesisthat it originally designated a tribe residing in the western part of Lesser Poland, and only at the beginning of the 11th century, again, it came to denote the ‘inhabitants of Poland’ (understood as the state of Bolesław I the Brave).
The article is devoted to the analysis and interpretation of the name „Glopeani”, one of the West-Slavic ethnonyms mentioned in the Bavarian Geographer (around 845 AD). Traditionally, they are assumed to be the „Goplans” and believed to have lived around Lake Gopło in the Kujawy region, with their capital in Kruszwica, beween the 7th and 9th centuries AD. According to an author, the latinized name „Glopeani” should be transcribed as „Głobjanie”. According to many authors, the position of „Glopeani” on the list suggest that this tribe might have lived in Pomerania, Great Poland or Masovia. On the basis of the analysis of Old-Polish toponymy, author attempts to localise the Głobjan tribe in the North-West part of Poland.
This paper analyzes problems involved in the Polish translation of proper names contained in Boris Pasternak’s novel Doctor Zhivago. Empirical material was collected from two Polish translations published in book form: by Jerzy Stempowski (Paris: Instytut Literacki 1959) and by Ewa Rojewska-Olejarczuk (Warsaw: PIW 1990). The study aimed to analyze translatorial equivalents taking into account the following criteria: consistency with the named object, informativeness of the name, and retaining the cultural ambience. The following research methods were applied: descriptive, com-parative analysis as well as functional and stylistic analysis. The comparative analysis focused on the adequacy of the applied translation methods.
The Hussite Trilogy by Andrzej Sapkowski, comprising the volumes: Narrenturm, Warriors of God and Lux perpetua, is a novel cycle unusually rich in proper names. Nomina propria are a significant element of the linguistic aspect of each literary work, as they obtain extra functions in the text, becoming carriers of artistic values. The article focuses on the most important roles proper names play in The Hussite Trilogy. The author discusses first of all the functions distinguished by Aleksander Wilkoń: locational (based on time and space), sociological, content-based, allusive and expressive, and the comical function introduced into the research on literary onomastics by Maciej Szelewski.
The present article is devoted to a textological analysis of the so-called intertextual proper names, i.e. units that relate to the structure of names that have been constructed earlier. The article attempts to characterize the so-called proprial (onymic) texts with the relations taking place between the hypotext (cf. “source name”) and the hypertext and/or hypertexts (cf. target name) taken into consideration. Considering the way particular texts are derived via a transition of some kind, a number of types has been distinguished: transtextualization, intertextualization, transformation, iconization and imitation. Transtextualisation involves names transferred from one onymic plane to another without any formal change (cf. Polish Pożegnanie z Afryką (Out of Africa) – the title of a film > Pożegnanie z Afryką – the name of a branch of shops in Poland). Transformations are names that have originated as a result of different linguistic transformations of the source text, i.e. the hypotext (cf. Skierniewice – a place name of a town > the Skierniewka – the name of a river). Imitations correspond to names formed in artificial onymic conditions, through analogy to structures already existing in the propial tradition (e.g. Biedaczkowo [Penuryville] – a text in the function of a place name, Bezczelnicki – a joke name to be found in literature). Intextualisations are, in turn, names whose structure contains hypotexts resulting from indirect influence or more or less precise application of their structure (cf. Słoń Torbalski – the name of a fancy leather goods manufacturer from the classic verse by J. Tuwim about its eponymous protagonist, the forgetful elephant, Tomasz Trąbalski). Finally, iconizations are created as a result of a transformation of the structure of pastiche-type hypotext or parody or burlesque (cf. Rozmowy w tłoku < Rozmowy w toku). The article also discusses differences between the so-called classic(archetypal) and prioprial text, as well as the functions of intertextual appellative texts, that involves updating of name-resources of a given system, among others.
Proper names are an essential part of political discourse that has a high descriptive value in relation to many aspects of society. This paper deals with proper names as a part of the ideologically influenced language of socialism in Slovakia in the 1960s. The aim of the study is to evaluate the impact of contemporary ideology on a selected group of anthroponyms and chrematonyms in the official paper of Slovak Communist party ‒ Pravda. The source material consists of 232 texts from the years 1961‒1970, from which 662 proper names were selected and used in analysis. The research shows the influential position of personalities and institutions connected with the official ideology of socialism. Proper names also reflect the modification of public discourse as result of political changes in 1968.
Literary onomastics should pay more attention to the problem of translation of proper names in literature. In translation practice we can see three general attitudes: domestication (substitution of original names by Czech ones), exotization (leaving of original names unchanged because of their exotic atmosphere) or a mix of these methods (some names are translated, some are not). 1 have described several methods of translating proper names: caique (word-for-word translation), transcription (representing a name from one script in another), substitution (change of an original name), explication (adding of information) and generalization (change of a proper name into a common noun).
The article discusses issues related to the rules for a description and explanation of connotations of proper names in Słownik metafor i konotacji nazw własnych [Dictionary of Proper Names and their Metaphors and Connotations] due to be published soon. The discussion covers a range of detailed problem issues that, in view of the fact that no lexicographical patterns are available, have to be resolved arbitrarily − in particular with reference to the shape or form of definitions in the dictionary.
The suffixes in variations of personal names that used to identify a person in one local community and were “tied” to a particular carrier have been analyzed in the article. The author also found many variants created using formants, which were added to the full and truncated word creating bases. These suffixes may be added to appellatives as well as to proper names.
Due to the fact that the Polish translation of the Harry Potter series by Andrzej Polkowski is one of the most popular and influential in the latest years it seems to be very interesting to find out what qualities make a translation as popular as the original text. Obviously, it can be assumed that there must be a wide range of conditions to be met. However, this paper focuses only on one aspect, namely proper names, which can be found in the books as the plot is set in a non-real world containing a significant number of nouns that were invented for the purpose of the scenery and action. Thus, they pose a real challenge for translators. What is more, the article aims at answering the question of tendencies in the use of translation procedures.
Deantroponymic names in the Belarusian-Polish frontierThe article analyzes deantroponymic toponyms of Grodno land, recorded in written materials of 15th – 17th centuries in comparison with current data. The origin, structure and evolution of the areal features of Slavic and Baltic names are investigated to conform the language, cultural and historical features of the region. From the historical and etymological point of view different time strata can be allocated. An extensive group was formed by oikonyms of the Baltic and Slavic origin, derived from personal names and nicknames of appellative character. A significant part in the oikonyms group is the group based on foreign-language Christian names. The third group includes settlement names, derived from the ancient complex Indo-European names. The fourth group consists of hybrid of Balto-Slavic names; a typical feature of which is the reconstruction of a Slavic-Baltic bases, which corresponds to the chronology of the development of this territory.Baltic names in the investigated territory, in the form of phonetic and morphological substitution, are the evidence of close Balto-Slavic linguistic and cultural contacts. Many oikonyms of Baltic origin are preserved in the investigated territory as part of modern Belarusian surnames.
