In this article there have been analysed the bynames and surnames of the South Teschen Silesia region in the period from the end of the 17th till the end of the 19th century. In this period the bynames and surnames were already morphologically formed, however their graphical form was unstable during the whole time. The period has been divided into four parts of evolution taking into account the morphological and graphical forms of the bynames and surnames. They are noted linguistic influences, especially of local dialect, official languages (German) and extralinguistic influences, e.g. the reason of migration. The number of different notations of a byname or surname was decreasing over the course of time. As concerns derived bynames and surnames, it is the most noticeable type with the suffix -ów that originally formed bynames and surnames with patronymical function (occurring only at the beginning of the period under revue) and the suffix -ko showing a falling trend. The suffix -ski which is typical of Polish surnames is not very productive in Teschen Silesia. In the last period concerned there are more surnames with the suffix -ski, but not for the reason of structural changes of the name type, but for the reason of the migration from Poland.

In this article I concentrate my interest on the occurrence of confirmation names, their frequency motivation, in the locality Dabas near Budapest in Hungary. The extinct village was resettled by Slovaks. During the Rákoczi conflicts it became desolate, and before 1708 it even disappeared from the registration documents. In the year 1712 the Slovaks of Roman Catholic denomination, settled in Sara, can be considered as ancestors of the present inhabitants. After the year 1720 additional Slovaks settled here. In the year 1880 the village had 76,6 % of Slovak population. There is a Virgin Mary’s Assumption Church in the village. I observed the names in the confirmation register from 1942, participated by the oldest generation, as well as names in the registers from 2003, 2006, 2009 being the latest. On the basis of the registers we can speak about the excepted motivation by godparents or parents. From 1942 to 2009 we recorded a decline of confirmation names motivated by the name of a godparent, or inversely by unknown factors. In comparison with the past years the variability of names is higher.

Comparing slang toponyms with other toponyms we may note that they have a special role in the toponymic system of a language: their status is observable both in pragmatic and linguistic conditions of name giving. The article proves these statements by analysing the (colloquial and) slang name variants of the Hungarian settlement called Hajdúszoboszló. One of the most important features is that during slang name giving the denotatum already has a name and the motivation is to give a different name from the already existing one. The large scale of complexity in generating and functioning of these toponyms are also characteristics: they are supported by their relationship to the stock of toponyms in the mother tongue and in the foreign language, as well as to the stock of common words in the mother tongue and in the foreign language.

In recent time the phenomenon of memory has become a popular issue in historiography and social studies. Probably the most interesting concept comes from the French historian Pierre Nora who wrote about „places of memory“. This text discusses the use of this concept in toponomastics. All examples are chosen from the Prague urbanonyms.

The study is focused on motivations applied in naming children in the Ústí nad Orlicí district at two groups of parental population. In the first group there are parents whose children were born in the period of 1960-1975 and the second group is formed by parents with children born in 2000-2012. The data from the parents were gathered using questionnaires. These two groups are compared from various points of view - used names, linguistics factors (length, sound aspects of names, relation of the given name to the family name, hypocoristics etc.) and other factors (family tradition, reli-gion, education etc.). Also differences in the approach to male and female names are followed.

The article is based on a linguistic analysis of the names of Polish medicaments. The author focused on the tendencies in naming, provides an analysis of the word-formation structure of names, and deals also with factors that play an important role in the choice of names. The analysed material is divided into four groups: 1. Names with an element that is based on the name of the operating substance made in a curative product, 2. names of medicaments with the name of major organ systems, 3. names of medicaments with the name of diseases, 4. names of medicaments with descriptions.

The article focuses on the translation strategies of charactonyms in The History of a Town by the Russian writer Mikhail Yevgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin and the novel The Monikins by the American writer James Fennimore Cooper. The paper represents an infrequent case of comparing the ways of rendering names in the translations from Russian into English and from English into Russian, that additionally promotes to literary onomastics studies. The article compares the onomastic spaces in the Russian and American works, the types of charactonyms and equivalents in the translations. The key method of the research has been the analysis of onomastic space. The performed analysis, defined further in the paper, has allowed distributing the translated names into usual and occasional equivalents.

This article compares the approach that accepts prefixation and suffixation as two equivalent means of aspectual pair formation to the approach recognizing only suffixation. Arguments are put forth in favor of the existence of aspectual prefixes, which significantly extend the boundaries of aspectual correlations. Another way of extending these boundaries is to reassess the correlation feature - the specific feature that is added to the invariant meaning of aspect (i.e. of perfectivity) and narrows this general meaning in such a way that it covers only aspectually paired perfectives. Based on the examination of F. Daneš’s correlation feature “mutation” (resultative change of state) and on the analysis of aspectual pairs in various semantic-syntactic classes of verbs, the alternative correlation feature was determined as “natural, inherent limit of the action”. In other words, the process of being “perfectivizable” must be able to be naturally discretized, quantized not only in terms of culmination of an action, but also in terms of a “natural portion” of a process. The extended conception of the aspectual correlation includes not only resultative verbs (opravovať/opraviť, starnúť/zostarnúť), but also the entire scope of punctual verbs (in addition to hodiť/hádzať, semelfactives such as bodať/bodnúť) and “quantized processes” (kašľať/zakašľať, prosiť/poprosiť).

The article deals with text changes made by Czech realist writer K. V. Rais (1859–1926) in three of his short stories in the 1920s. Following the standard principles of Czech textology, it tries to distinguish individual style-motivated changes from those of purely linguistic (language-culture) nature. It argues that the latter, conforming to the linguistic ideals of his age, are not contrary to the author’s creative intentions.

This article discusses the significant role of František Daneš’s work in the area of grammatical theory. It deals with the question of center and periphery in the structure of grammatical units. It shows that elements of systemic analysis are essential both for traditional grammar and for functional-semantic grammatical research. Particular attention is devoted to the concepts of “functional-semantic field” and “categorial situation”, taking into account the factor of the interaction between the system and the environment (based above all on material from Russian). In the analysis of the categorial situation, elements of the paradigmatic system of the language are connected to the syntagmatic aspects of speech. Issues concerning both semantics and the means of its formal expression are taken into consideration.

The study deals with toponymic space as part of the social space in which individuals and different societies exist. Based on the analogy between the appellative vocabulary, which uses the term communication register, a set of toponyms used in social groups is called social toponyms. These form a toponymic register of the concrete social group. Talking about an individual, we talk about the toponymic register of the individual, which is formed by sub-registers of societies, of which that individual is a part. Social groups that use their own social toponyms can be divided according to age (infant, youth), profession (forest workers, peasants), interest (hunters, fishermen, sportsmen).

The Reformation and the Counter-reformation had left some restrictions for the giving of names after for the Catholics and Protestants. In this paper we have examined the proper names of protestant boys, which had been baptized in St. Catherine Church in Brunswick (Northern Germany) in the period 1808-1908 to find out, how the names had changed in a hundred years time. The quantity of names and their frequency have been examined. The names have been classified and classed to several groups according to their origin, like Germanic names, biblical names or the names of the saints etc. The names in the birth registers of the St. Catherine Church have some typical features which are characteristic for German Protestants, although the amount of biblical names is not as big as expected in contrary to the names of the saints, which still appear in the birth register in each year.

This paper regards the analysis of commercial names found in the north of Maramureș, a county with a multi-ethnic population, consisting of Romanians, Hungarians, and Ukrainians in the north of Romania, on the border with Ukraine, and where the percentage of people going abroad is big. The aim of this paper is to illustrate the relationship between ethnicity and the language used commercially, but also the causes behind the mother tongue abandonment in the onomastics of the public space in Maramureș. The corpus consists of names of businesses, shops, products seen on the field or on specialised websites. The analysis is done from a lexical-semantic, typological and socio-cultural viewpoint, emphasising the denominator’s mindset when he resorts to a language internationally used in order to name a new business, and also how the name reflects the identity of an ethnic group or the acceptance of alterity. Since the Romanian EU integration, there are no more linguistic boundaries to speak of, because in Maramureș, in areas with an active emigrant majority, names in English, Italian, and French or hybrid denominations formed with Romanian notions and foreign terms can be found on the frontispiece of firms. It is likewise in the villages belonging to minorities, but here a greater attachment to their mother tongue is noticed, due to the position individuals have in society. Thus, an interdependency relationship is established between language and society, especially between language and community.

Karel V. Rais is an exemplary representative of realism not only in poetics but also in selection and use of proper names. The action in his short stories takes place in an authentic landscape, the setting itself having either the authentic or a realistic name. The characters, as well as the individuals mentioned in the characters’ speech, bear common names and realistic, often even regionally typical surnames. In the characters’ speech, and to a large extent in the narrator’s part, they are referred to by hypocorisms and unofficial surname forms.

This article focuses on the topographical names of Podlasie formed from the roots lado (Old Slavic *lędo) and lid(z)mo (Lith. lydìmas, lýdìmas). The semantic identity of the two terms became the reason for their parallel treatment despite their genetic distinctiveness. They were used to denote objects of a similar type, referring to ‘an area which has been grubbed up, cleared forest’. The area where microtoponyms with the root lado are found does not generally reach further than the western boundaries of Ruthenian dialects in Podlasie. Microtoponyms with the root lydìmas are found in the area located a dozen or so kilometres to the west from the current boundary of East Slavic dialects. The geography of toponyms reflects the old system of ethno-linguistic relations in the area under analysis, which was colonised by Polish and Ruthenian-Lithuanian settlers in the 15-17th centuries.
