The article presents the analysis of the problems of representation, desire and acquiring knowledge as the foundations of Gilles Deleuze’s thought. However, the analysis of these problems can significantly contribute also to the understanding of the issue of symbolic and affective poverty, as it was formulated by Bernard Stiegler, noticed and described much earlier by Deleuze, though taking visible shapes nowadays in connections with the workings of capitalist, consumptionist, economically driven societies. The analysis of each of the presented topics reveals hidden dependencies between the understanding of the problem of knowledge and the perception of sensibility of the Other. To be able to communicate the vast diversity of emotions in the confrontation with a difference, it is good to stay open for what Deleuze indicates: the multiplication of the possibilities of living, and in result, to learn to affirm them as a part of social enterprise, whenever they stay in agreement with presumed powers of critical mind.

The article proposes a comparative reading of two novels: "American" of Henry James and "The Doll" of Bolesław Prus. The author argues that James’ novel published in Polish in 1878 could become an inspiration for Prus. The circle of problems of "American" and "The Doll" is focused around similar themes: the identity of a modern man and the patterns of masculinity and femininity. Both novelists show a mechanism of creation for idealistic fantasies.

Podejmuje próbę definicji spełnienia w oparciu o cytat z dzieła Edyty Stein. Rozważa korelację między pojęciami „spełnienie” i „szczęście”, odnosząc się do klasycznego rozumienia szczęścia u trzech wielkich filozofów: Sokratesa, Arystotelesa i św. Tomasza.

* The original article "Basi antropologiche della pedagogia di don Lugi Giussani" was published in Roczniki Pedagogiczne, vol. 15, no. 1 (2023), pp. 51-61. In Luigi Giussani’s cultural path, the pedagogical and anthropological dimensions appear intimately connected: the questioning of the principles and forms of human education is closely related to that of the constitutive and structural dimensions of the person. Human experience appears to Giussani to be characterized by the perception of an original dependence and by the presence of an inexhaustible need for meaning: from this awareness the work of education must begin, as the offering of a relationship capable of introducing the subject to the discovery of his own self and of the fundamental dimensions of the world. Based on this approach, Giussani formulates an educational thought that addresses the main pedagogical issues of the contemporary era, rethinking them in an original way: growth of the person, relationship between authority and freedom, experience, knowledge, complexity, nihilism.

The objective of this article is to present the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze, seen from the point of view of two contemporary authors, namely: Maurizio Lazzarato and Bernard Stiegler. The main assumption here is that its main revolutionary potential boils down to the value that is attributed to the notion of “desire”. The very power of this notion consists in counteracting the processes of reduction of human experience to the level of symbolic and affective misery. The degrading power of media and capitalist societies’ technologies as described by Lazzarato and Stiegler may give an insight into the dangers of being a disaffected individual.

Zola's novel world can be seen as a play of forces that takes place in a strictly defined spatial configuration between aspirational characters striving to realize their desires; the body in motion becomes their expressive medium. Always semantically marked, movement is not only understood as the hero's movement between points in space. In this analytical perspective, based on the body of La Curée et L`Argent, the movement becomes the embodiment of the will / desire, the transformation of thought into action, what is potential into real.

From the point of view of conflict theory, I argue for the following pessimistic conclusion: a silent conflict of interests exists between the entrepreneur and the customer, as the former must advertise and promote his/her innovations and merchandise. It looks innocent enough, but by doing so, the entrepreneur interferes with the needs and desires of the customer, and especially with the latter’s conditional needs even when the customer does not appreciate it, or when the entrepreneur does it against the customer’s will. From the customer’s point of view, it is disturbing and negatively affects his/her happiness level. What are, therefore, the responsibilities of the entrepreneur? I provide a detailed analysis of the concept of need and desire, and explain how desires develop on the basis of the desirability of objects of desire. It shall allow us to see how desires can be manipulated and, perhaps, how such manipulation can be avoided. The purpose of the following article is to trace the boundaries and methods used in eidetic phenomenology related to the access to the very method of showing the sense of phenomena, carried out on the example of phenomenology present in Emmanuel Lévinas’ writings. A special and extreme example of this type of situation is the “relations” of The-Same (identical) responsibility towards the Other, taking the form of substitution, in a radical interpretation of the French phenomenologist’s phenomenology of transcendence. However, with the increasing ethical requirements of the philosophy of transcendence, as a consequence of Lévinas’s equally radical ontology, the sense of the Other-in-myself dangerously approaches the figure of the internal self-prosecutor, who becomes the metaphor of the current in his writings figure of the ethical violence and retaliation of the Other towards the Same. I perceive here deeply hidden, also for Lévinas, resentimental motifs of the spirituality in which he grew up. On the one hand, Lévinas’s philosophy strives to exclude the possibility of the re-emergence of the Auschwitz event, but on the other, it becomes the driving force behind this thinking.

Artykuł stanowi próbę zderzenia z sobą ideału człowieka postulowanego przez Epikteta i Marka Aureliusza z ponowoczesną tyranią sukcesu i maniakalno-narcystyczną wizją ludzkiej natury.

The basis for discussion is the standpoint of Peter Sloterdijk, who said that in highly developed cultures, upbringing and education are influenced by inhibitory factors and depriving of the brakes factors. A human being, who frightened in the Hellenistic period, as a violation of “hubris” madman, now functions as imagopathy, a perfect product, living in a world of possibilities and the blurring of the boundaries between the real and the virtual.

A starting point of the pedagogy analysed in this paper is the truth about ourselves, Christianity and a communal character of human's existence. Reverend L. Giussani, showing hope in anthropological and theological perspective, shows its true sources that lie in experience, faith, love and desire of good gained with difficulty in which human life finds its fulfilment despite the circumstances. The first step in education towards hope is to show the accidental character of a human being and the deepest desires of his heart. The paper, by discovering the dynamics of the formation of the attitude of Christian hope points at the circumstances that favour and inhibit its origin and development.

W celu uwypuklenia znaczenia oczyszczenia z grzechu i otwarcia daru życia wiecznego Ewangelista wykorzystuje słowo „pragnąć” (diya,w – dipsaō).

The Gospel of John is framed with several theological themes. The theological centre is Jesus’s death on the cross (19:28-30). This paschal event Jesus prepared through the symbolic cleansing of the Temple of Jerusalem (2:13-22). The significance of the cleansing from sin and the opening of the gift of eternal life is emphasised by the word “thirst” (diya,w – dipsaō) which occurs five times in the Gospel of John. It first appears in the context of Jesus’s thirst for water during the encounter with a Samaritan woman (4:13-14). Her desire to put her life in order opens her up to a relationship with Jesus, who gives her the gift of the Gospel and thus indicates the gate to salvation. Her desire to live decently hides the hope of humanity longing for an order based on love; the hope of transcending ethnic barriers to embrace the universal message of the Gospel. The concept of diya,w – dipsaō appears in the presentation of the Eucharist which satisfies the desire for eternal life (6:35). Jesus proclaims the end of bloody animal sacrifices in the Temple of Jerusalem and the beginning of the way of salvation in the Eucharist. At the Feast of Tabernacles He proclaims His ability to satisfy human thirst (7:37). He announces that the fountain of living water will gush forth for everyone who will be baptised. On the cross, Jesus cries “I thirst” and tastes vinegar, the symbol of human sin. In this way the process of salvation will be accomplished, Jesus will accept all human sins and give the world the Spirit, the source of eternal life. From this source everyone may draw, everyone who will be baptised and feed on the Gospel and the Eucharistic meal: the body (sa,rx – sarks) and blood (ai-ma – haima) of Jesus.

Artykuł analizuje zaburzenia funkcjonowania woli na przykładzie postaci obecnych w kilku tekstach francuskiego symbolizmu. W oparciu o badania z zakresu psychologii eksperymentalnej opisane w dziele Th.

This article analyses the disorder in functioning of will by the example of characters from a few texts of French symbolism. On the basis of experimental psychology research described in Les Maladies de la volonté of Th. So next to the characters of aboulic individuals created by T. de Wyzewa i J. de Tinan, in the texts of Villiers de L’Isle-Adam and M. Schwob we can see people pursuing at any cost the achievement of power, or the confirmation of oneself uniqueness.

The article is an attempt to rethink the relationship between chance and necessity in the work of Stanisław Lem. The author of the article uses both the expository and literary philosophy of the writer himself as well as Lacanian psychoanalysis (especially the topological view of the unconsciousness of desire) and Michel Foucault’s archeology of knowledge (especially the problem of the limits of representation and analogy as an alternative to dialectics). The two main theses of the article are: 1. classical philosophy (Kant, Hegel) provides Lem with such fundamental categories as critical imagination or abolition of genesis, and is treated as parallel (not secondary or supplementary) to biotechnological theory; 2. the writer approaches the problem of Other-ness from the anti-dualist perspective.

This article discusses the historical development of the concept of joy in medieval philosophy and theology. It focuses on the problem of the relation between “usus” and “fruitio”. The former concept (“use”) connotes the whole spectrum of possible attitudes of man in his relation to temporal goods. The use of temporal goods by man is an earthly, temporal, and secular experience. It can take a sinful form – sensual pleasures – or a religious form, in which case it becomes a foretaste of eternal happiness. The second concept (fruitio) means happiness, and it is the fulfillment of the sum total of all human desires. Fruitio only occurs after death, and it is an element of beatifica visio. Usus concerns changeable, temporal goods, while the only object of fruitio is God. This article is devoted to the question of whether the object of fruitio can be anything other than God, i.e. whether the temporal good can be the object of full joy, and if so, how. An answer to this question would require an analysis of a number of specific issues: what conditions (subjective, objective) would have to be met in order for the use of the temporal good to qualify for joy? How does the moral evaluation of the use of such goods proceed? What are the emotional components of usus? In other words, the central problem of this article is the concept of usus (the use of temporal goods) and the medieval interpretations of this concept as a connotating human experience of temporal (incomplete) joy caused by earthly goods. Mainly, the article concentrates on three authors: Augustine, Peter Lombard and Bonaventure, and presents three different theories of joy: joy as a possession of the desired object (Augustine), joy as longing for a desired object (Peter Lombard) and joy as distance to the desired object (Bonaventure). Lastly, the article argues that the development of the concept of joy in the period between 395 BC and the second half of the thirteenth century is the history of an ever greater appreciation of joy and the perception of its proper meaning in human life.

Artykuł omawia historyczny rozwój koncepcji radości w filozofii i teologii średniowiecznej. Wreszcie, artykuł argumentuje, że dzieje radości w okresie 395–druga połowa XIII wieku to dzieje coraz większego docenienia radości i dostrzeżenia jej właściwego znaczenia w życiu człowieka.

The paper endeavours to analyse Ian McEwan’s self-reflexive novel with the theoretical apparatus provided by the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan. McEwan designs his novel as a fictitious narrative written by Briony Tallis, an aging novelist who wishes to atone for the childhood blunder that ruined the lives of her sister, Cecilia, and her sister’s beloved, Robbie. In order to gain reader’s sympathy, Briony describes her thirteen-year-old self as an idealistic and innocent child, deprived of paternal guidance, governed by the unconscious structures of the Symbolic Order. The girl’s compulsive craving for order and for control of the reality around her is linked to her narcissistic constitution, which, as Freud suggests, proves an important quality in the creative writing process. The paper follows Briony’s efforts to devise an elaborate expiative fantasy which allows her not only to create the appropriate mise-en-scène of personal atonement, but also to establish the coordinates of her desire to achieve some purpose through her writing.

Artykuł podejmuje analizę autotematycznej powieści Iana McEwana Atonement [Pokuta] z wykorzystaniem aparatu pojęciowego zapożyczonego z teorii psychoanalitycznej Jacques’a Lacana.
