In this paper, the author focuses not on the acquisition of knowledge through classroom teaching, but on the process of knowledge acquisition via self-teaching among secondary school students. The analysis of this process is based on the written compositions of secondary school students in which they analyzed their own personal experiences of choosing the most effective methods of self-teaching. The analysis was based on such factors as the volume of material to be learned, time, energy and psychological stress. The author of the study adopts a formalized language in which the individual findings are interpreted not only in psychological terms, but also in terms of formal logic.
Ancient thinkers, especially Aristotle, underlined the meaning of music in relaxation as the inner ”revival” of a human being. Music had an important place in the Aristotelian concept among the four disciplines constituting the basis of education (grammar, gymnastics, music and drawing). It was not as the other three disciplines subordinated to some activity or useful purpose, but taught the human being how to relax in a decent way. Music did not constitute the component of common entertainment but characterized the attitude of diagogé, in which pleasure joined in beauty in an ethical sense. In Roman culture, it was expressed by the Latin term otium - indicating first of all the freedom of planning your time. In ancient thought, the understanding of relaxation supplied by music (otium musicum) did not restrict itself to recreational dimension only, but referred to the deeper spiritual sense. For music led the human being to contemplating beauty. That conviction was undertaken in the thought of the Church Fathers, especially St. Augustine. The Bishop of Hippo showed it in the dialogue About music as a philosophical discipline, which constitutes the basic condition of contemplation by clearing the mind and moral rebukes. Medieval theology also comprehended music not only as an esthetic form of entertainment, but first of all as the expression of cosmic harmonia mundi, finding its reflection in the spirituality of a person. Music as one of the ways of inner revival (recreatio), leads the human being to contemplation (contemplatio), in other words, to the attitude of admiration over the mystery of God. Such understanding of music reveals its theological dimension – as via pulchritudinis.
Buying can be defined as a process in which money is exchanged for service. Money is in the process most commonly exchanged for food, clothing, transport, entertainment etc. This primary function of buying is in modern societies broadened and subtly changed so that buying takes over some new functions which may overshadow this primary one. Among these new functions rank high a tendency to regulate by the process of buying both positive (relaxation) and negative emotions (compulsion, compulsive buying). At the same time, buying may serve the function of achieving prestige due to the commodities and services bought. In the technical literature, all of these new functions are theorized to relate separately to self-esteem. One can therefore ask what is the relationship of self-esteem to these three new functions of buying. It is the question we tried to answer in our research. It was a study in which we tried to analyze at the same time the relationships of the tree new goals of buying among themselves and between each of them and self-esteem. At the same time, we put to the test three hypotheses according to which the striving to achieve each one of these goals of buying will be motivated predominantly by low self-esteem. In the study there took part 251 respondents in the age range from 14 to 67 years from a general population. The respondents answered two questionnaires, the Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and Kreklová’s Scale of Reasons to Buy. This second scale aims to measure the three abovementioned reasons to buy. To analyze the psychometric characteristics of both questionnaires we used PCA (Principal Component Analysis). The results of the analyses of RSES show that the scale consists of two dimensions which we named positive and negative self-esteem dimensions. The results of the analysis of the Scale of Reasons to Buy revealed that the scale consists of the three dimensions postulated, e. g. relaxation, compulsion and prestige. To analyze the relationships among the variables we used correlation/regression analyses. Results of these analyses show that the three dimensions of the Scale of Reasons to Buy correlate highly with one another and that at the same time each of them relates differently to the two separate dimensions of self-esteem. To summarize: The dimension of relaxation was not in a significant relationship with either the positive or negative dimension of selfesteem. The dimension of compulsion correlated rather highly with both dimensions of self-esteem, but when put in a regression analyzes in which the shared variances of the other two reasons to buy were controlled these relationships have got close to zero and became nonsignificant. The dimension of prestige has shown the predicted strong relationship with the negative dimension of self-esteem. Its relation to the positive dimension of self-esteem was not significant. The results are in accord with the theories one can encounter in literature. According to these theories in the modern consumer society the processes of buying has got some new functions and at the same time assumed on some functions which were in former societies associated with different activities. Among the new functions pertain the regulation of positive and negative emotions by the process of buying, and striving to achieve status and prestige by the results of it (e.g. commodities and services bought). All of these functions are in the literature hypothesized to relate to self-esteem. The results of our study show that these expectations may be partly wrong: when controlling for the shared variances of predictors, the self-esteem scale relate substantially and significantly only with one dimension or reason for buying, namely with prestige. Those persons who have low self-esteem are probably predisposed to try to heighten their self-esteem by means of the commodities and services bought. The relationships of self-esteem to the other two dimensions of buying may be spurious.
When working with preschool children with developmental disorders, it is worth paying attention to the balance between stimulation and calm, which is so important for the regeneration of the young body. Children with disabilities have a lot of activities, most of which require them to focus, control their emotions and overcome barriers. Therapeutic tasks are very important and it is worth carrying out them with a child who is prepared for them, regenerated and open to experiences and challenges. One of the elements that allows you to relax and unwind is music. The article presents the results of research exploration, showing the importance of relaxation in music therapy work with children with intellectual disabilities at preschool age. It is based on the main research problem, which is the impact of the proposed music therapy techniques on calming down and relaxing children participating in classes. It presents the results of qualitative research conducted over a period of two years of work with the group. Thus, he pays attention to the appropriate adjustment of the character of the music, including, above all, tempo, rhythm, melody, harmony and dynamics, which allowed to achieve a state in which children could regenerate their strength, rest and calm down. This is very important both for the patient himself and for the people cooperating with him - therapists, educators, nurses.

A teacher working in a modern school is obliged to shape and enrich personalities of entrusted to him or her young people and hence to assist them in their way to develop their potential. In the process of shaping children’s and young people personality music performs a significant role. It directly affects the emotional state of human and becomes an important means of social interaction. The aim of this study is to attempt to draw attention that a certain kind of music – relaxing music – is becoming an important element of the human development. In our view, relaxing music becomes a kind of language that conveys important pedagogical content often impossible to express verbally. This type of music used by a teacher as part of the educational processes has a significant impact on human emotions and moods. It may calm, stimulate, create specific moods, reduce stress. The impact of relaxing music on the human emotional states may be, under certain circumstances, greater than the impact of verbal or visual arts. Applied in educational activities relaxing music allows to teach innovatively and creatively, it is the realization of children’s right to awake interest in acquiring knowledge. It stimulates the natural instinct of curiosity. The above mentioned goals of conducting classes with the use of relaxing music are the foundations of the following study.

Zastosowanie do działań edukacyjnych muzyki relaksacyjnej pozwala uczyć in-nowacyjnie, kreatywnie, jest realizacją prawa dziecka do rozbudzenia zaintere-sowania zdobywaniem wiedzy, pobudza naturalny instynkt ciekawości. Floating is still a relatively little known relaxation technique. Although it was already invented in the second half of the 20th century, it still does not reach wider awareness of both the public and professionals. The principle of this technique is to stay in an undisturbed environment of a water tank in the shape of an egg, filled with a dense saline solution allowing „floating“. Hence the name of the technique itself. The conditions of this technique, restricting intrusive external stimuli, allow the experience of deeper relaxation than commercially available relaxation methods. This paper focuses on reminding and mapping existing knowledge of the relaxing effect of floating. In the text, sufficient space is dedicated to the description of this technique, to the method of its use as a relaxation tool and also to the historical context of the development of floating. A final part treats the rules for the use of this technique and potential risks associated with it.

Background. The elderly can react to stressful stimuli in an alternating fashion, i.e. they learn how to behave in a new situation, but then return to their previous behavior pattern. Regular participation in relaxation classes can help elderly people reduce their level of stress. The aim of the study was to explore the impact of participation in health tasks on the internalization patterns of relaxation activities at the University of the Third Age (UTA) participants. Material and methods. Fourteen students of the UTA at the University School of Physical Education in Wroclaw who took part in 10 relaxation classes answered a questionnaire which was the main research tool used. It consisted of open and closed questions focusing on the advantages of internalization acquired during the classes. It was followed by a direct interview which complemented the opinions of the subjects expressed in the questionnaire. Results. Most respondents gave the psychosocial category as a reason for choosing relaxation classes, mentioning benefits such as calming down, peace of mind and relaxation. Conclusions. Students participating in relaxation classes attributed the greatest value to those action patterns that provided psychosocial feelings. The person running the class plays an important role in moderating the relaxation experience. A systematic relaxation training contributes to the occurrence of a “calming down reflex”.
Protection of architectural objects erected in the 20th century, which due to their origins are often perceived as a difficult heritage, in the current social conditions constitutes a complex restoration problem. The article outlines attempts to develop and therefore protect from devastation this group of structures which in the countries of the former Eastern Bloc were commonly referred to as palaces of culture or cultural clubs. In the minds of Poles they are usually associated with the enormous edifice that was built after the Second World War in the centre of Warsaw changing its image for years. This “gift from a befriended nation” is a poke in the eye of the Polish people but at the same time it is recognised as a big tourist attraction by visitors from abroad. Although this is the only structure of this type in Poland, in the territory of Ukraine this problem affects a large number of the so called workers’ clubs built in the years 1920–1930, which until today in various ways perform the function of centres of “spending free time”, similarly to those which appeared in the former USSR in the first half of the 20th century. The article present attempts at adaptation of “workers’ clubs” to new conditions in Ukraine.

Artykuł prezentuje próby zagospodarowania, a zatem ochrony przed znisz czeniem właśnie takiej grupy obiektów, określanych powszechnie w krajach dawnego bloku socjalistycznego mianem pałaców, czy też klubów kultury. XX w. Artykuł prezentuje próby adaptacji „klubów robotniczych” do nowych warunków na Ukrainie.
Not all children develop properly. Therefore it is important to detect as early as possible deficits in their development and beginning systematic therapeutic intervention. Support the psychomotor development may be individual or group. It is necessary to take into account the needs and possibilities of the child. Therapeutic work contributes to leveling cognitive and social-emotional deficits. Properly matched methods and techniques of works with children decide about the effectiveness of therapy. This study presents the basic assumptions of several methods whose effectiveness has been confirmed in working with children with developmental disabilities.
In today's world dominated by stressful work and hectic lifestyle, the classes that enjoy increasing popularity are not only the classic aerobics classes, but also relaxation exercises combining elements of stretching, strengthening and unwinding known as Body and Mind. Exercises of this type are designed to combine the work of the mind with the body. Music used in these classes is calmer than in the other fitness classes, and allows the participant to focus more on exercise and calming down the body. The aim of the study was an attempt to show physical and psychological benefits arising from participation in body & mind classes. A method of diagnostic survey, the questionnaire technique was used. After analyzing the respondents’ replies the following conclusions were drawn: 1. Body & Mind includes the following forms of classes: Pilates, BodyArt®, healthy spine, yoga, stretching. The respondents also pointed incorrectly: TBC (Total Body Conditioning), ABT (Abdominal, Buttocks, Thighs ) or Pump. 2. Body & Mind classes are directed to everybody, both the elderly and the young, to those who have health problems and those who attend the classes prophylactically. 3. According to the respondents, the most important reasons for the participation in Body & Mind classes were: elimination of back/spine pains and improving the flexibility of the body. Other important factors include working out a slim silhouette as well as relaxation and rest. 4. Respondents mentioned a number of benefits, both physical and mental, arising from participation in this form. The most frequently, however, they pointed out: the reduction of back pains, better feeling of their own body and greater muscle strength. The mental benefits included: improving the well-being and mood enhancement, reducing fatigue and relieving tension and stress.

Research on disturbances in speech fluency and effect of these disturbances on inter-human communication make it possible to get a more complete knowledge about the mechanisms of speech. Results of this kind of investigations have also a practical function, as they allow defining the principles of prophylaxis and therapy in people who have trouble with speaking. It should be noted that fluency of speech is expressed in the skill of connecting particular elements of an utterance, in a proper use of pauses, adequate rhythm and pace of speaking. Efficiency in connecting particular elements of an utterance comprises segmental and supra-segmental organization of the phonic sequence containing four levels. On the articulatory-phonetic level disturbances of fluency of speech are manifested in prolongation, omitting and repeating sounds and syllables. In this situation the speech therapist makes the decision concerning the kind of proceedings. Logotherapy, psychotherapy of pharmacological treatment are the most frequent methods. Logopedic proceedings aim at determining the proper pace of speaking, removing the difficulties in reading, developing musical capabilities, enriching the active vocabulary or broadening the concentration of attention. Therapy in people who stutter may be conducted by using various ways of teaching fluent speech. Relaxation is significant in therapy. When a stuttering person is relaxed the gravity of his disturbance decreases. There are many programs, methods and techniques of therapy in stuttering persons. However, the decision about starting a proper action should be made after a thorough diagnosis. Then proper steps in therapy may be taken.
The fast pace of life and confronting the current social dilemma “to have or to be” generate stressful situations for young people who are expected to meet the demands and expectations of modern times. The authors reflect on the place and importance of effective relaxation in the process of education and upbringing. The presented terminological and conceptual cross-section was based on the analysis of available scientific, didactic and popular science literature. To enrich the presented content, a reconnaissance was made among teachers, educators and students of pedagogy. The aim of the following considerations is a symbolic “invitation to the discussion” on the role and value of relaxation in the educational space. The authors attempt to characterize the basic methods of relaxation, displaying them against the background of art-therapy activities, more popular in the discourse of science and practice. Finally, they present a sketch of their own methodological proposal as an example of flexible and creative use of the existing techniques.

Autorki dokonują próby scharakteryzowania podstawowych metod relaksacyjnych, ukazując je na tle innych, bardziej popularnych w dyskursie nauki i praktyki, aktywności arteterapeutycznych. Ostatecznie prezentują szkic własnej propozycji metodycznej jako przykład elastycznego oraz twórczego wykorzystania zastanych technik.
Aim of the study: Testing the effectiveness of three pain stimuli distraction types based on the use of virtual reality. Materials and Methods: 16 students aged 20-32 were, using virtual reality goggles, exposed to the stimulating distraction condition – a rollercoaster ride, relaxing distraction condition – a walk through the forest or control condition - a black screen was displayed. The pain was induced by submerging one’s arm in freezing water. The measures of the distraction effectiveness were: the time for which the participant could withstand the pain stimulus and a VAS scale, on which participants rated the level of pain they felt. At the end, the measurments were compared to the results of the PTS temperament survey. Results: Participants withstood the pain stimulus significantly longer in the distraction condition than in the control condition; however, no significant differences were found between the stimulating and the relaxing condition. None of the conditions had any influence on the reported level of pain. Women withstood the pain stimuli significantly longer than men in both the stimulating and the relaxing condition and reported a lower level of pain in the stimulating condition than men. A significant, positive correlation between PTS’ Strength of Inhibition subscale result and the time of withstanding the pain stimulus was found in all three conditions of the experiment. Outcome: Evidence of the influence of virtual reality-based distraction on extending the pain stimulus suppression time has been provided. However, no differences in distraction effectiveness between the stimulating and relaxing condition have been observed.

Cel badań Badanie skuteczności rodzaju dystrakcji od bodźców bólowych polegającej na wykorzystaniu wirtualnej rzeczywistości. Materiały i metody. Rezultaty. Badani istotnie dłużej znosili działanie bodźca bólowego w warunkach dystrakcji, niż w warunku kontrolnym; lecz nie stwierdzono istotnej różnicy pomiędzy warunkiem pobudzającym, a warunkiem relaksującym. Kobiety istotnie dłużej znosiły działanie bodźca bólowego w warunku pobudzającym i relaksującym, oraz deklarowały istotnie niższe odczucie bólu w warunku pobudzającym. Wykryto również dodatnią korelację wyników uzyskanych w skali Siły Procesu Hamowania kwestionariusza PTS z czasem wytrzymywania bodźca bólowego we wszystkich trzech warunkach eksperymentu. Wyniki.
