Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na możliwość zastosowania ćwiczeń komunikacyjnych podczas nauczania fonetyki jpjo. Podejście komunikacyjne, nastawione na efektywne porozumiewanie się, sprzyja bowiem wykorzystywaniu technik opartych na autentycznych, prawie autentycznych bądź udających autentyczne materiałach językowych, które niesłusznie (sic!), w zakresie wymowy i percepcji, wydają się trudne do zdobycia.

The aim of this article is to show the possibility of using communicative exercises when teaching Polish phonetics to foreigners. The communicative approach, which is oriented toward effective communication, leads to using the techniques based on materials that are authentic, quasi-authentic or only resemble authentic language. Such materials, which include correct pronunciation and perception, are wrongly considered to be difficult to obtain.

The aim of this paper is to show the artistic aspects of phonetics and teaching phonetics basing on German speech sounds and their combinations in this language. This branch of linguistics called the methodology of phonetics reveals its artistic signs. The art as virtuosi and singers prove is a very good means to work on better and better pronunciation and finally its automatic production. Without motivation and spontaneity particularly working on pronunciation perfecting it cannot continue. Since the vocal apparatus and the speech itself base on similar physical mechanisms such as playing instruments, linguists have tried to collect a number of articulatory and drilling exercises in the form of études (rythmical but also melodic) to help the whole process be effective.

The article shows certain phonetic difficulties encountered by Slovene students during the initial stages of learning Polish. These learners face a number of pronunciation-related problems resulting from various phenomena occurring in Polish, including variation across different registers (cf. standard pronunciation fízyka ‘physics’, vernacular pronunciation fizýka), the realization of nasal vowels (cf. wziął ‘he took’, pączek ‘doughnut’, wąs ‘moustache’ [vźoÁ, poŠček, v“ s]), word-final devoicing of voiced consonants (obraz ‘picture’ [obras]), or assimilations within consonant clusters (dziewczyna ‘girl, girlfriend’ [Þ'efčyna]). Furthermore, problems arise due to the differences between the native and the target language, as e.g. in the case of Polish sounds absent from the native Slovene system, such as ą, ę, or ł, di- and trigraphs corresponding to single sounds, cf. chłopak ‘boy, boyfriend’ [χÁopak], dziadek ‘grandfather’ [Þ'adek], or various graphic representations of the same phoneme, e.g. [u]: kura ‘hen’ – góra ‘mountain, top’; [χ]: hak ‘hook’ – chodzić ‘to walk’, [ž]: rzeka ‘river’ – żaba ‘frog’, [ć]: ciocia ‘aunt’ – ćwiczenie ‘exercise’ – miedź ‘copper’. The article employs a comparative approach to the issues at hand and may therefore prove useful for teachers of Polish working with Slovene students.

The article presents the linguistic features of Historia filozofii po góralsku (A History of Philosophy in Góral) of Józef Tischner. The stories have a generalized, literary spelling, nonetheless the text records many language elements of the Podhale dialect, which the author was an active user. Basing on written language, an analysis shows the phonetic layer of the dialect contained in the text. The author records some features of the dialectal system consistently, others – only partially. An analysis also points out the linguistic nature of the stories. It has been assumed that the text cannot be considered as a transcription, especially a phonetic transcription, a translation or a transformation into the dialect of the inhabitants of Podhale region. The dialect, as a variety of the spoken language, can be expressed in a written form, although it affects the structure of the text.

Artykuł przedstawia cechy językowe Historii filozofii po góralsku Józefa Tischnera. Gawędy mają pisownię uogólnioną, literacką, mimo to zapis rejestruje wiele cech gwary podhalańskiej, której autor był czynnym użytkownikiem. W analizie uwzględniono zawarte w tekście gwarowe wykładniki fonetyczne. Niektóre cechy realizowane są przez autora z pełną konsekwencją, inne – jedynie częściowo. Analiza prowadziła do refleksji nad charakterem językowym gawęd. Przyjęto, że tekst nie może być uznawany za transkrypcję, a tym bardziej zapis fonetyczny, tłumaczenie czy przekształcenie na góralski. Gwara, jako odmiana języka mówionego, może się przejawiać w formie pisanej, choć rzutuje to na strukturę wypowiedzi.

The subject of this article is an analysis of two 16th century monuments of Grand Duchy of Lithuania writing: the Academic Chronicle and the Suprasl Chronicle. They belong to the first Belarusian-Lithuanian redaction, which consists of three main parts: all-Ruthenian, Smolensk, and the Chronicle of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania – the first original work wholly written in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The aim of the article is to single out in both chronicles Old Church Slavonic elements occurring on phonetic and word-formation levels. The analysis has revealed that in the oldest, all-Ruthenian part of both Old Church Slavonic works there are the most phonetic and word-formation features. However, they are also present in the other parts of the chronicles, in which Old Church Slavonic forms of all-Slavonic words and their Old Ruthenian equivalents appear parallelly. A number of prefixes and suffixes typical of the Old Church Slavonic language also confirm a strong link between these two chronicles and the writing tradition.

The article succinctly discusses the most important phonetic features of Slavic languages and indicates their geographical distribution. It briefly presents an area-typological view of the contemporary phonetics of Slavic languages and suggests a different division than the one resulting from historical facts (into eastern, western, and southern groups).

Communicative language teaching does not focus its attention on phonetics, but it should be noted that student’s communicative efficiency also depends on his ability to reproduce the phonetic shapes of words correctly. The student’s difficulties with the correct pronunciation in a foreign language are the result of shaping his phonological hearing and automation of movements of the articulators by his native language. That is why just exposure to the sound of the L2 may not be enough. The author argues that identifying Polish phones and their correct production should be focused on from the beginning. This allows the teacher to refer to correct patterns of phones in any prospective case of wrong pronunciation and also helps prevent the formation of erroneous student’s habits of speech. In the work on phonetics, particular attention should be paid to the most characteristic phonological oppositions in Polish, also taking into account those important from the point of view of inflection. It would be advisable to introduce phonemes simultaneously with the alphabet, as in classroom learning conditions a student acquires phonic and graphic forms of words at the same time. Equipped with the knowledge about the relationship between pronunciation and spelling, he will be able to correct his own pronunciation referring to the spelling of the words and also – to write them as they are heard. It also prevents a student from reading newly learned words according to the spelling rules of another language. In the future, it will allow the student to pronounce those proper names, which are learned in graphic form, correctly.

The article provides the rationale for a forthcoming monograph on the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet. The study presents the arguments in the form of questions, and answers them at length. The questions fall into three groups: phonetic, graphical and practical issues. From the last category, the problem of selecting an appropriate font and a way to conveniently use it can be mentioned. The phonetic issues that need to be explained in the context of an international transcription include: transcription of Polish sounds normally described as prepalatal, dental, and alveolar, as well as the value of phonation, and alaryngeal speech symbols. Graphic problems include such issues as: means of transcribing archiphonemes, asynchronous and polysegmental articulations, lowered variants of Polish phonemes /m/ and /n/, and others. The paper also mentions typographical matters, such as italic variants of phonetic symbols and small capitals. The article concludes with an overview of the possible audience of the planned monograph, and an enumeration of reasons for a compilation of a study containing answers to the above-mentioned questions.

The author focuses on the most important phonetic phenomena related to the vocalic and consonantal system and on lexical phenomena, including the influence of the German language and the Old Prussian language described by professor K. Nitsch in the early 20th century in his works on the vernaculars of the then East Prussia. Special attention has been drawn to the crystallization of the professor’s views regarding the relationship between the language and the colonisation of those lands since the 14th century, as well as to the evidence of the Polish origin of today’s Warmia and Masuria’s vernaculars. The subsequent colonisation waves from the Dobrzyń and Chełmno regions and from northern Mazovia, coupled with changing conditions and political boundaries, have led to the formation of contemporary dialectal subgroups in the area: non-masurianising Lubawa-Warmia vernaculars and masurianising Mazovian vernaculars.

The paper presents a few observations concerning the pronunciation of the prepalatal consonants by pre-school and school children (between 6 and 8 years old). It was found that the realization of the sounds in question is unstable in children’s speech. Both: palatal and palatalized pronunciations of the phonemes /ś ź ć/ were noticed.

The aim of the paper is to provide a phonetic and phonological description of the vowel system of the Dąbrówka Wielkopolska dialect. The analysed material revealed the very good retention of the original dialectal phenomena (e.g. the diphthongal pronunciation of *[ɨ], diversity of monophthongal and diphthongal variants of */o/, or two allophones of /u/ conditioned by the preceding consonant). The acoustic analyses provide a precise phonetic description of the dialect’s vowels and revisions to the previous descriptions (e.g. the allophone of /u/ after coronal and palatal consonants is not only lowered, but also centralised, the reflexes of */eː, eN, ẽ/ after palatals are distinct from /i/, the reflex of */aː/ is sometimes lower than [ɔ], but never reaches the height of [ɒ]). Farther, the perceptive and acoustic analyses revealed a – hitherto unnoticed – opposition between the reflexes of */eː/ on the one hand, and the reflexes of */e/ before /N/ and the vocalic reflexes of */ẽ/ on the other, and, consequently, made it possible to discover a “new” vowel phoneme.

W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono akustyczno-fonetyczną i fonologiczną analizę samogłosek współczesnej gwary Dąbrówki Wielkopolskiej. Ponadto analizy audytywne i akustyczne umożliwiły wykazanie niezauważonej dotychczas opozycji pomiędzy kontynuantem */eː/ a kontynuantem /e/ przed /N/ i ustnym kontynuantem */ẽ/, a w konsekwencji odkrycie „nowego” fonemu samogłoskowego.

W artykule przedstawiono cechy fonetyczne gwary mazurskiej zachowane w wierszach pisarzy ludowych. Materiał badawczy ograniczono do wydanej przez Zbigniewa Chojnowskiego Antologii mazurskiej… i zbioru wierszy Michała Kajki wydanych w 1954 r. Utwory wierszowane pisane przez twórców ludowych były poprawiane przez wydawców i redaktorów zgodnie z przyjętymi wzorcami, ale ślady najbardziej wyrazistych fonetycznych cech gwarowych zostały w nich zachowane.

The article presents the phonetic features of Mazurian dialect preserved in the poems of folk writers. The research material was limited to Zbigniew Chojnowski’s Mazury Anthology… and the collection of poems by Michał Kajka published in 1954. The poems written by folk artists were corrected by publishers and editors in accordance with accepted patterns but traces of the most expressive phonetic hallmarks, have been preserved in them.

Descriptions of the Kashubian sound system from the middle of the 20th allow an assumption that [r̝] (*[rʲ]) as such is currently entirely lost in the Kashubian linguistic area. However, it turns out that in Jastarnia there are still speakers that preserve [r̝] in their pronunciation with a pretty high frequency (ca. 30% of all possible cases). The paper gives basic statistical and phonetic data on the current pronunciation of this consonant and tries to answer the question about reasons of the discrepancy between the older descriptions and the real state of affairs.

The analyzed texts from Łuków reveal an insignificant number of dialectal trends characteristic for the areas of Mazowsze, Podlasie and Małopolska borders, where they come from. These include: lack of umlaut, phenomena related to mazurzenie, like hyper correct – siakanie and szadzenie, closing and extending of vowels and mixing ke, ge / k'e, g'e. In the studied archives one can point to such phenomena that are associated with the area of the central and northern regions of Małopolska, for example: lack of nasality before fricatives and narrowed / / raised pronunciation of the nasal sound ą, which is typical for the area south of Lublin.

The paper is devoted to the development of the former nasal vowels in the Kashubian dialect of Strzepcz. Taking into consideration modern analyses of their pronunciation in other Kashubian dialects, one can assume that older descriptions are highly outdated. The paper is based on the auditory analysis of over 450 realisations of the original nasal vowels in various contexts with a support of the visual analyses of spectrograms and auxiliary acoustic measurements. There were four informants: two representing the middle generation (a man and a woman) and two (a man and a woman) from the older generation.A synchronous nasality occurred in only 1,9% of realisations (without taking account of *[ɑ̃] at the end of the word where it is denasalized without exception) and only in the case of *[õ] in the front of fricative consonants. In 3,7% of realizations a full denasalisation was observed. In 94,4% of cases occurred an asynchronous nasality with a vowel and following nasal consonant or a glide. The vocalic (syllabic) segment is in over 80% of asynchronous realisations fully denasalised. The observed situation is diametrically different from those presented in the older descriptions. From the phonological point of view on should analyse the original nasal vowels as sequences of /V/ and underlying glide /w̃/.

Denazalizacja charakteryzuje 3,7% wszystkich realizacji. W 94,4% przypadków zarejestrowano jakąś formę asynchronii, czyli wymowę z wyodrębnioną spółgłoską nosową lub glajdem. W ponad 80% realizacji asynchronicznych dochodzi do całkowitego odnosowienia segmentu wokalicznego (zgłoskotwórczego). Stanowi to diametralną różnicę w stosunku do starszych opracowań. Z fonologicznego punktu widzenia należy przyjąć na miejscu dawnych samogłosek nosowych sekwencje dwufonemowe z /w̃/ jako kontynuantem nosowości.
