The article is an interpretation study of two lyric poems by Adam Mickiewicz (Drzewo and [Wsłuchać się w szum wód głuchy...], 1842). It grows out of an analysis of a lost manuscript and the history of the above-mentioned poems’ editions (including commentaries), as well as the notebook romanticism [romantyzm brulionowy] concept developed by the author. This concept encapsulates the inedita and creates a separate sphere in the epoch’s literary art and aesthetics.

The aim of the article is to present the unauthorized edition of Adam Mickiewicz's Sonnets, to point out the errors and to explain the problems regarding the basis of the manuscript copy made by Ludwik Piątkiewicz. The copy of Piątkiewicz, the first edition and the edition from 1827 were compared. The article describes two errors concerning the manuscript. Moreover, it was pointed out that the manuscript was probably not based on the first edition, but on currently unknown copy. However, the first print was used at a later stage of work and minor errors were corrected on its basis.

The article focuses on Zdania i uwagi – a work that could be recognised as the penultimate stop on the way towards the poetic falling silent of Adam Mickiewicz. In it the Romantic author renounced all claims to autonomous creativity and concealed his auteur “I” behind the spiritual guidebooks read by him. The collection reflects Mickiewicz’s evolving views about poetry and the word. In his concept of literature emerging in the shadow of the Romantic crisis of the language the author stressed the mystagogic and performative role of the word. The objective of writing is to render truths permanent and to transmit them (initiation); the written work is to be the reason why something that shall incline others to act will take place. Doubt in the cognitive power of language, combined with an inner conviction about the necessity of proclaiming the truth, leads the poet along the apophatic path, which in Zdania i uwagi reveals itself upon the level of the form in the aesthetics of a fragment (the “kenosis” of the discourse, a bereft style), while upon the level of contents it is expressed in the praise of silence and calm – conditions for contemplation conceived not merely as a way of cognition but also prayer.

The Library of the Poznań Society of Friends of Arts and Sciences has been recently enriched by the accession of the manuscript “Poetical texts from the first half of the nineteenth century”. The manuscript includes a number of patriotic poems put down in the manuscript between 1848-1849. The article provides information on the physical description of the manuscript item (its present shelf number being: rkp. 2112) and a detailed list of its contents. Individual works have been listed in alphabetical order according to the names of the authors, with annotations concerning first editions. The bulk of the poems included in the manuscript were published prior to their inclusion in the manuscript, some of them after the year 1849. At the present stage of the investigation, some of the poems have not been confirmed to have been published earlier. An anonumous 12-verse poem without a title, attached to the communique at full length, has been identified by the author of the article as a poem whose last four verses were published in 1881 in the book Kraków - Zagrzebiowi under the title W albumie księcia Golicyna by Adam Mickiewicz. The article is intended to stimulate those engaged in research of the history of literature in further investigations concerning the said collection of poems, in particular the last mentioned text.

The significance and scope of literary output of Adam Mickiewicz determines the need and importance of its bibliographical coverage and studies on the source literature pertaining to the author of Forefathers’ Eve and Pan Tadeusz. The beginnings of bibliographies devoted to Mickiewicz rest as early as the 1840s; in the latter half of the 19th c. and the beginning of the 20th c. a great number of partial and incomprehensive bibliographies originated. The bibliography of Polish literature,  initiated by Gabriel Korbut in 1917, provided, after 1950, a base for a new and more comprehensive edition finalised in the 19-volume strong series of bibliographies for individual literary epochs and selected authors. The process of preparation and edition of the planned Volume 10, entirely devoted to Mickiewicz and aimed to be included in the series Nowy Korbut (A New Korbut Bibliography of Polish Literature), has taken decades to complete its first part (bibliographic listings) and provides an opportunity to create its state-of-the-art mutation in the form of a digital edition of the Mickiewicz bibliography available online.

Ranga i zakres twórczości Adama Mickiewicza określają potrzebę i znaczenie opracowań bibliograficznych obejmujących twórczość i literaturę przedmiotową autora Dziadów i Pana Tadeusza.

The paper is devoted to Adam Mickiewicz’s political thought. Its chief thesis refers to the breakthrough that took place in his thought after the year 1831. The breakthrough entailed quitting from the vision of politics shaped within the framework of Enlightened modernity to develop a programme of Messianic politics anchored in modernity criticism. The change is presented as a paradigmatic choice, a choice of the only accessible tools to pursue politics; it became an exemplary, repeated until today motion of the Polish politics, breaking with modernity. The model proposed by Mickiewicz comprises criticism of liberal democracy, setting politics into religious and moral frame, national symbolic field, and treating politics as an agon.

The article concerns religious or rather hagiographic dimensions of Polish romantic literature. It presents Adam Mickiewicz’s interests in the persons of saints, especially in St. Adalbert of Prague who is a character of a few unemotional and impersonal pieces of writings by Mickiewicz. At first sight it seems that the mentioned texts were written on request, they were official and they had an official and popularizing character. Especially circumstances of the origin of a biografic note entitled Saint Adalbert (1839), prepared for Encyclopédie catholique, illustrate hues of the poet’s motivation. It appears that in each text devoted to St. Adalbert (fragments of a dissertation First centuries of Polish history [Pierwsze wieki historii polskiej], 1838; lecture XIII of the first course of Slavic literature [Literatura słowiańska], 1841) Mickiewicz constantly attributes the authorhip of the hymn Mother of God [Bogurodzica] to the saint. The study brings an answer to the question why Mickiewicz wanted to sustain the XVI century legend about Canticum sancti Adalberti despite the fact that the legend’s veracity was questioned in XIX century.

Artykuł dotyczy religijnego, ściślej: hagiograficznego wymiaru literatury polskiego romantyzmu. Ukazuje zainteresowanie Adama Mickiewicza postaciami świętych, a szczególnie św. Wojciecha. Jest on bohaterem kilku nielirycznych, nieosobistych utworów Mickiewicza.

This article presents the results of Mickiewicz’s works’ analysis from the years 1818-1828. The study was carried out in order to answer the following questions: did the writer use words borrowed from other languages in his works? If so, from which languages and how often did he do that? What was his attitude towards loanwords and language purism? The paper shows popular foreign words in the Polish language in the 19th century and those used by the writer for the sake of artistic stylization, quite often conferring new meanings onto them. The article also presents words which were being adapted in the times of Mickiewicz.

Some fragments of the book (threads about the "weak God") may bring to mind the philosophy of Gianni Vattimo, who makes a very interesting reinterpretation of the Catholic tradition, but in a secularized and completely immanent version. A deeper consideration of this could enrich the book that is already extremely erudite and very professionally written.

In this article an attempt has been made to discuss the astronomical-meteorological metaphors present in Sonety krymskie of Adam Mickiewicz and to determine their role in the construction of the depicted world of the sonnets. The description of the vocabulary and the stylistic tropes in the Mickiewicz’s poetry have already been the subject of several linguistic studies, however, the characteristics of the metaphors has not been done yet. Therefore, the subject of this essay can fill one of the niches which still exists in seemingly complete description of the poet’s language. In this work I adopt the definition of the metaphor discussed by Teresa Dobrzyńska (1994) and the elements of methodology proposed by Piotr Wróblewski (1998). The analysis demonstrates that the time and place of creating the poetry influenced the quality of metaphors and the thematic vocabulary utilized within them. The adaptation of the Mickiewicz’s poetic language is visible in the discussed examples. The imagery evoked by the metaphors excerpted from Sonety krymskie goes beyond the Polish cultural realities and refers to the then reality of the Crimean region. The use of the indicated metaphors serves to emphasize the exoticism and mystery of the Crimea. The performed analysis demonstrates that the metaphors allow to express what the poet was unable to name with single words, but wished to convey this image to the reader. The utilized metaphors will enable to manifest the emotions and experiences which accompanied Mickiewicz but were difficult to describe in a realistic convention.

Artykuł ukazuje stosunkowo mało znany obszar twórczości i pracy Adama Mickiewicza – działalność nauczycielską. Autor ukazuje wkład Mickiewicza w upowszechnienie w Europie dorobku polskiej i słowiańskiej literatury.

The article shows the rather little known aspect of Adam Mickiewicz's work – his educational activity. His work as a teacher was the activity our great poet performed the longest, which he devoted himself to with extraordinary commitment and conscientiousness, not only due to pecuniary reasons, but also his passion for the job. The article presents Mickiewicz as a teacher, starting with a a teaching position in the district school in Kowno, where he conducted lessons in various subjects, onto his professorship in Latin literature at the Academy in Lausanne and finishing with his post of associate professor of Slavic literature at the Collège de France in Paris, a university for adults. The author demonstrates the input Mickiewicz had in spreading Polish and Slavic literature in Europe.

Although much has been said on the Dresden Dziady by Adam Mickiewicz, a lot of points still remain to be explained. One of the keys to the world of the drama has been provided by the studies on its genesis. Of interest to me is a certain surprising detail in one of the hand-written versions of the scene entitled Senator’s Dream. This strange detail helps to explain what happens or might have happened to a character of the Dresden Dziady during sleep. It also brings us to a reconsideration of Mickiewicz’s demonology.

Towards the end of 1820s there appeared two independent Polish translations of a famous qasida "Lāmiyyat al-cArab" ascribed to a legendary “brigand-poet” named Aš-Šanfarā, one of which by Adam Mickiewicz and the other, unfinished, by Ludwik Spitznagel, a young Orientalist, poet, and Juliusz Słowacki’s friend. The two translations competed with each other from the beginning of their composition. Their artistic values were compared and their degree of adequacy to the French philological translation by Silvestre de Sacy evaluated. Mickiewicz’s version was reproached for being a relay translation based on the French text, while Spitznagel, passed as an excellent expert in Eastern languages, was thought to have translated directly from Arabic. To date, no attempt has been made to meticulously compare both translations in respect of the Arabic original. The paper aims to complete the shortcoming.

‘Gusła nasze moc straciły’. Does contemporary culture ask Dziady serious questions? Review of a theatre spectacle: Adam Mickiewicz, Dziady, parts I, II and IV and the poem Upiór, directed by Michał Zadara, Teatr Polski in Wrocław, premiere on 14th February 2014. The review article discusses Dziady, część I, II i IV and the poem Upiór directed by Michał Zadara. The spectacle is part of a bigger project realised at Teatr Polski in Wrocław in 2014–2016. The article attempts to reconstruct the director’s idea of a stage version of Mickiewicz’s drama, which is regarded in Polish culture as a symbolic work constituting Polish identity. Furthermore, the author asks a number of questions about the condition of the contemporary culture that seems to be a culture of exhaustion, and also about this culture’s dispositions and capabilities employed when reinterpreting the romantic masterpiece.

Zofia Trojanowiczowa’s book consists of articles devoted to Cyprian Norwid’s and Adam Mickiewicz’s creativity. Not only is it a collection of brilliant studies interpreting individual pieces by the previously mentioned poets (Norwid’s "Cywilizacja" <"Civilisation"> and Mickiewicz’s "Konfederaci barscy" <"Confederates of Bar">) or problems crucial for them (e.g. the artist’s role in the modern world, relationship between ethics and politics), but in fact it is a synopsis of the synthesis of Romanticism.
