The article is an attempt at presenting the similarities and differences in contemporary imaging of old age on the silver screen by using several examples of Polish and Czech (mostly) feature films from the 21st century. Special attention has been paid to the mechanisms of familiarising the taboo of passing away and old age in the cinematography of both countries.
In the text, an attempt was made to analyse selected issues related to gerontology in the relationship to people with disabilities. The context of analyses is the tendency of social ageing tendencies, observed in Poland and in the world, especially in European countries. Selected areas of reflection are combined with the conviction that there is a need for research which would fill in the gap in the field of research carried out so far, focused on the issue of the broadly defined life situation of the people with disabilities in the senior years, which is in the scientific merit of Polish special needs education (pedagogics). There is a justified fear that these individuals are more likely to experience marginalisation and exclusion in many areas of life than people of similar age in the general population.

In the context of the demographic and psychosocial changes capturing the factors that are relevant to the process of perception of the aging process and their own old age becomes a significant problem. The article discusses the results of the study conducted on a group of 430 people on the factors determining the perception of old age by young people. Presented selected results relate to the personality correlates of perception of the aging process.
Old age is frequently associated with decreased physical fitness, illnesses, loneliness, etc. For older people the “autumn of their lives” is very often a difficult period. However, contemporary seniors often show a different attitude to old age and completely contradict the stereotype of the “senior citizen of the 21st century”. One of many activities undertaken by the 60+ generation is participating in the classes of the Universities of the Third Age. The surveys conducted among the groups of Zamość students of the University of the Third Age showed, among other things, the priorities of the seniors in contemporary times, the kinds of activities they prefer, the reasons for undertaking education in the Universities of the Third Age and the influence on their lives.
Year 2012 was declared the European Year of Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity. The eyes of Europe have been directed on an important issue of the problems of the elderly. Old age, which is naturally inscribed in human development, should be filled with satisfaction and joy, is often a phase of loneliness. Loneliness is very difficult for people in old age. Its social, emotional and axionormative dimension may be highlighted. In this work, I emphasize the need to become interested in the elderly, for whom appropriate prevention and intervention strategies should be prepared.
In the present article has been analysed portrayals of older women which appear in the memoirs of the nineteenth century Russian women writers. J. Sushkova, A. Kern and A. Smirnova-Rosset in their memoirs most often depict remarkable family members such as grandmothers and aunts, family friends. They focus on the analysis of their personalities, spiritual values and kind-heartedness rather than their physical appearance and signs of physical aging. Among the old ladies portrayed in the memoirs we encounter pious women, wise, experienced, understanding and hospitable women as well as overbearing women or even hostile towards other people. It has been proved in the article that the old women’s behaviour was determined by their age, marital status, social position, their personal qualities and life experience.

Introduction and aim. The issues of humans’ ageing are more and more frequently addressed in the relevant literature. Most commonly, people follow three ageing trajectories: a normal one, disease-affected one, and a healthy one. The purpose of this article is to present a relationship between physical activity and occurrence of cognitive function impairment in the elderly. Material and methods. This paper is a narrative review. Based on a literature search, various forms of physical activity are presented, as well as the effects of physical activity on mitigation of cognitive disorders in the elderly. The following databases were used: Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar. Analysis of the literature. One of the most important factors that promote healthy ageing is regular physical activity. Many studies and publications have addressed this issue. The relationships between physical activity and cognitive fitness have been less studied. Conclusion. The results of the studies presented in this article may form the basis for more in-depth analyses and, in a longterm perspective, for the development of optimal preventive and therapeutic strategies using broadly understood physical activity to maintain cognitive fitness of the elderly.
The aim of the article is to discuss the importance of formal and informal sources of retirement security of Poles in the face of current economic, social and demographic changes. Formal sources are understood as the institutional pension security (regulated by law), while the informal source will be primarily considered to be family support (the so-called natural pension security). Following the introduction, the first section shows demographic trends in Poland and refers to pension security from the public pension system. The second section presents data sources and research methods used in the article. The third section shows the results of research on planned protection in old age. The fourth part discusses and concludes the results of the study. The research shows that not many Poles save for old age, counting on the support of the state and children.
The interdisciplinarity of social gerontology encourages the use of the achievements of various sciences, the instruments of which may be helpful in deepening the knowledge about old age. In this article, the proposed source of inspiration for research on old age becomes the category of time. It shows the basic meaning of this category in reference to philosophical thought, its current use in research on old age. The review has a character signaling philosophical contexts, without embedding these concepts in the contexts of the history of philosophy. In addition, it is detailed in areas and questions which can inspire researchers on old age to use the category of time as both research canvas and interpretation canvas.
The aim of the paper is to describe the phenomenon of duality of old age. The author shows the most important lights and shadows of this period of life. He refers to his own studies and compares them with the research carried out by the Centre for Public Opinion Research.

Bartholomew Paprocki in his work Třinácte tabulí věku lidského (1601) describes stages of human existence. Each stage constitutes one ‘‘board” in which Paprocki contains different moral messages. On individual “boards” the writer scrutinizes birth, childhood, youth, adulthood, old age. Paprocki perceives old age as the final stage of life, starting at the age of 60, which is aboundary between what happened and what will happen. The first part of human life is over and the rest should be devoted to religious worship, when one regrets sins committed in young age and begs God for forgiveness.

The article is an attempt to present, on a literary level, two differing perspectives of old age in various texts of the Hebrew Bible. First, a suggestion is made regarding the point in life when somebody could be regarded as old. A brief mention is made of the longevity of characters appearing in the so-called Primeval Cycle of Genesis 1-11. Then, it is indicated that Levitical instructions of Numbers 4 and 8 as well as rules of valuating people in Leviticus 27, can settle the beginning of old age at fifty or sixty years of age respectively, dependent on the type of work one performed. Second, the article focuses on positive aspects of old age in the Hebrew Bible, showing that to grow old was desired, since it was regarded as a realization and fulfilment of somebody's life. Old age in certain contexts can be viewed as a blessing from YHWH (e.g., Exod. 20,12) and a reward for a righteous living (Ps. 92,12-15). Old people according to Levitical traditions are to be respected because YHWH himself respects their old age (cf. Lev. 19,32). In early sapiential traditions of the Book of Proverbs, old age is connected with wisdom as this qualification assumes not only theoretical knowledge, but requires much practical experience. Therefore, wisdom seldom goes hand in hand with the young. Third, the article proceeds to present negative aspects of old age described in various traditions of the Hebrew Bible. It is pointed out that those texts speak honestly of infirmities of being old, such as weaker eyesight and taste, decreasing ability to procreate, and increasing disposition to being manipulated by others. A special accumulation of negative features of old age can be found in a later sapiential tradition of Qoheleth 12,2-6. Yet, it is suggested that old age is not the worst experience accoring to the sage, but endless oppression and loneliness are (cf. Eccles. 4,1-3.7-12). Finally, it is noted that some traditions expressing eschatological hope restore and promote the positive picture of old age. Deutero-Isaiah looks to a lengthening of human life far beyond a hundred years (Isa. 65,20). The Book of Jubilees 23,27 gives hope of extending human life to nearly a thousand years, which may be viewed as returning to the unrealized ideal of the Primeval Cycle in Genesis 1-11. Thus, old age can be viewed mainly as a positive perspective of human life.
The article is devoted to the analysis of the themes (motifs) of youth and old age in the poetry of A. S. Pushkin. The first part of it focusses on the images of youth in Pushkin´s early (lycean) works of art as well as in his poems of the romantic period and the last decade of his poetic carrier. The second part pays attention to four variants of Pushkin´s poetic depiction of the old age. In the last part the author of the article summarizes the facts obtained by the analysis of both themes (motifs) and in a brief survey presents the most important conclusions characterizing specific features of Pushkin´s artistic concept of time.
The article analyzes the works of M. Metlitskaya, M. Paley, O. Slavnikova, T. Tolstaya, M. Traub, G. Scherbakova, L. Ulitskaya and other authors of modern “women’s prose” regarding the peculiarities of depicting age- anad society-defined behavioral stereotypes, social roles, finding feminine feelings of elderly women, as well as makes an attempt to categorize these images.

The article presents the curriculum content related to old age included in the curriculum guidelines for Roman Catholic religious education in schools in Poland. The study is based on two documents that are currently in force: “Core Curriculum of the Roman Catholic Catechesis in Poland”, the text of which was adopted by the Polish Episcopal Conference on 8 March 2010, and the “Syllabus of the Roman Catholic Religious Education in Kindergartens and Schools”, adopted at the meeting of the Commission for Catholic Education of the Polish Episcopal Conference on 9 June 2010. Based on the analysis of the above-mentioned documents, issues concerning old age presented in detail have been proposed.
The history of old age has only relatively recently become explored as a research topic in Poland. This sketch focuses on the relationship between old age and poverty in People’s Republic of Poland. Old age, however, was a significant object of interest of the PRL authorities in at least two aspects. The first was the social security system, particularly in relation to old age and disability pensions, and the second, social care for the aged.
Life satisfaction is a complex and highly subjective concept. Scholars studying this issue have made numerous attempts to define it. Whether we are happy, or have a sense of fulfilment, or we delight in the years we have lived through and in everyday life, it is all related to the aforementioned life satisfaction. The article deals with the subjective sense of life satisfaction among elderly people who are members of the Senior Club in a rural-urban district. The article is based on material obtained from in-depth interviewing. The research objective was to explore and obtain thorough knowledge of the sense of life satisfaction of elderly people. Particular attention is paid to selected factors that determined the perception of life satisfaction. On the basis of the participants’ opinions, certain groups of factors were selected that were more often indicated as key factors in the assessment of life satisfaction, i.e. health, housing situation, place of residence, family relations, neighbourly relations and a sense of social utility. The article presents the complexity of the problem and the need for an individual approach to the topic, due to the changing face of ageing and old age.
This paper explores the relationships of affection and duty that elderly Roman mothers established with their adult daughters and sons. Analysing the written sources, it shows what duties adult children had towards their mothers in consideration for the care received during childhood, and how mothers demanded this support. The paper looks at the affective relationships between mothers and their offspring and highlights the importance of older women for the cohesion of the Roman family. This study draws five main conclusions. First, that care practices performed by Roman mothers gave them a privileged position in old age. Second, that the survival of Roman women in old age depended largely on the ties they had with their younger relatives. Third, that the relationships these women established with their adult sons and daughters were characterised by a mixture of affection and authority. Fourth, that the women studied here used old age as a discursive weapon to achieve their ends, presenting it as an especially vulnerable stage in life, but also as a source of power. And lastly, that the relationship elder Roman mothers had with their children was dependent on the gender of the child.
Attention in the article is focused on the basic concepts in the gerontological sense, namely: aging, old age and elderly people. The in-depth analysis concerned three areas of issues: aging of society, aging in society and proposals of preparation for old age. Aging is a process that affects everyone and should be prevented. Demanding and even challenging older people is one of the methods.
