Tourism motivated by participation in culture is considered to be one of the most important forms of movement on earth, but especially in Europe. Such tourist activity includes religious tourism, and often pilgrimage. The article discusses the place of religious tourism and pilgrimage in the overall structure of cultural tourism products, which the author treats as a macro-product consisting of many sub-products. Religious tourism and pilgrimage are the focus of the main section of the article.

The research was aimed at identifying changes in tourist traffic - religious tourism and museum tourism to the Museum of the Holy Father John Paul II Family Home in Wadowice in 1996-2019. The museum was opened in 1984 in the house where Karol Wojtyła, Pope John Paul II, was born in 1920. The thorough reconstruction between 2010 and 2014 resulted in the establishment of a museum with a modern multimedia narrative exhibition. In recent years, the museum has been visited by more than 200 thousand tourists a year, including 40 thousand foreigners from more than 100 countries worldwide. During the years 1996-2019 the number of international tourists rose more than twice. The greatest boom in the visits to the museum was noted in 2005 and was associated with the disease, death, funeral, and increasing worship of Pope John Paul II. Following decreased interest in visits to the museum during the period of 2010-2014, which was due to the museum renovation, a revival and increase in visits to the museum was observed again. Changes that were observed in the museum during the last twenty-five years were identified, among other things, thanks to field research involving observations and interviews with museum curators and staff. Analyses of tourist visits to the museum were based on detailed data provided by the museum managers. In the elaboration of the collected research results descriptive-analytical, dynamic-comparative and cartographic methods were used.

Leżajsk town as an exemplification of religious tourism and protection of cultural heritageThis paper discusses the relationship between religious tourism and the protection of cultural heritage. The multicultural as well as multi-religious town of Leżajsk, which is part of the “ Hasidic Trail ”, exemplifies these studies. The first part of the paper describes the notion of religious tourism and the most essential issues of cultural ( religious ) legacy management in contemporary tourism. The major aspects of Hasidic Judaism are described ; the believers of which come to Leżajsk in great numbers today. Furthermore, the cultural legacy of Leżajsk and religious tourism development in the city are also described. The paper also introduces the most important enterprises held by the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland, which operates the Hasidic site in Leżajsk, and assesses whether these initiatives fulfill the assumptions of the balanced development idea in tourism.

Roztocze possesses considerable cultural assets, conducive to developing tourism. Among them all, the sacred ones are especially significant because they are traces and witnesses of the former multicultural and multireligious character of the region. They are also excellent premises for advancing religious tourism. But there are some barriers that confine opportunities to develop that kind of tourist movement in Roztocze. First of all, is the general weak state of the tourism infrastructure. Besides that, there is an evident lack of professional promotion and elaborated offering of products of religious tourism. It seems that this form of tourism is not emphasized strongly enough in regional and local development strategies.
PL
Roztocze posiada niezwykle cenne walory kulturowe, sprzyjające rozwojowi turystyki.

This study presents changes in religious tourism in Poland at the beginning of the 21st century. These include the development of a network of pilgrimage centers, the renaissance of medieval pilgrim routes, the unflagging popularity of pilgrimages on foot as well as new forms using bicycles, canoes, skis, scooters, rollerblades and trailskates; along with riding, Nordic walking, running and so on. Related to pilgrimages, there is a growing interest in so-called ‘holidays’ in monasteries, hermitages and retreat homes, as well as a steady increase in weekend religious tourism. Religious tourists and pilgrims are attracted to shrines by mysteries, church fairs and religious festivals, in addition to regular religious services and ceremonies.

The focus of the article are the shrines located within the present boundaries of the Poznań Archdiocese. The definition of the term “shrine” is discussed followed by deliberation of the role and significance of sacred places in the light of the canon law and the statutes of two archdiocesan synods held in 1968 and 2004-2008, respectively. A classification of the sacred places of the Poznań Archdiocese is proposed taking into consideration different scholarly criteria. The role of the custodian of a shrine and the meaning of pilgrimages and religious tourism are also presented.

Tourist and religious potential of the Philippine archipelagoThe paper discusses the geographic distribution of the most important centers of religious worship ( Marian shrines, sanctuaries of the Lord, sites of religious festivals, Passion Plays ) in the Philippines, presenting the issue against the background of a diverse mosaic of language, ethnicity and religion ( mainly Christianity and Islam ). The primary purpose of the paper is to describe the significant religious and tourist potential of the Philippines. The statistical data used in the paper were obtained from the World Tourism Organization ( UNWTO ), materials obtained from an internet query, and the available research literature on religious tourism in the Far East. Much information came from direct observation and material collected during a research stay in the Philippines in 2010. The authors place particular emphasis on the key characteristics of pilgrimage centers of the Roman Catholic religion – the dominant religion in the Philippines. The data show the most important sites and religion-oriented buildings such as churches and sacred figures as well as their importance to pilgrims. The paper also focuses on to the importance of pilgrimage centers of different religious denominations

New church construction in the cities of Serbia in the last 25 years is a consequence of restrictions and the marginalisation of religion during the pre-1989 socialist period. In the period from 1945 to 1989, almost no new churches were built, and urban planners in Serbia have not developed appropriate selection criteria for the location of new religious buildings. Religious buildings built in the period after 1990 were built on sites that were selected ad hoc without considering the needs of believers and churches. In the last 25 years, more than 400 churches have been built in rural areas and cities, which influenced the reshaping of the cultural landscape. In this paper, attention is given to determining the required number of churches, their location, and the distribution of the urban structure in relation to various relevant factors. The specific spatial organisation of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the homeland and in the diaspora is emphasized.

Aim. Pilgrimage thus belongs to the oldest non-economic forms of migration and is a phenomenon that has intertwined throughout the history of religions. The aim of the article is to emphasize the important position of religious tourism as one of its forms. Based on the deep-rooted tradition of wandering in Slovakia, characterize important places of pilgrimage of national and perhaps partly international significance. Method. Terrain reconnaissance together with analysis of archival and parish documents. Results. Numerous Marian temples and chapels testify to the Marian veneration in Slovakia. Of the 5925 known patronages of churches and chapels (even those that have disappeared) in Slovakia, 1762 are dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Of these Marian patrons, 329 are consecrated by the Seven Sorrows of Our Virgin Mary. The result of field research is an analysis of six pilgrimage sites of national importance in Slovakia. Conclusion. Slovakia is a strongly Christian country with a tradition of wandering, as evidenced by many local and regional pilgrimage sites. Pilgrimage sites are understood as contact points that God has marked, they are the intersections where the ways of God meet the ways of people. There are mostly Marian pilgrimage sites in Slovakia and six of them (Marianka, Staré Hory, Levoča, Šaštín, Nitra, Ľutina) are of national importance.

The article concerns the characteristics and assessment of the Mecca pilgrimage trends among the inhabitants of Konya Province (Türkiye) in 2017–2021, i.e. before and after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Particular attention is paid to the impact of the pandemic on: (a) the tourism of the provincial inhabitants to Mecca, (b) the activities of local religious tourism operators, and (c) the sense of psychological discomfort in those who could not participate in a pilgrimage. The study concerned the inhabitants of Konya Province due to the deeply rooted conservatism and high religiosity distinguishing this society. The study was conducted through the methods of investigating sources, expert interview and diagnostic survey. The interviews were conducted at selected Konya travel agencies that organise pilgrimages and at the Konya Valiligi Mudurlugu il Muftulugu. In addition, using an online survey questionnaire, inhabitants of the province were asked if and how their level of psychological comfort was affected by not being able to make the pilgrimage to Mecca during the pandemic. The results showed that the pandemic significantly weakened the previously growing trend of pilgrimages to Islamic holy sites in the analysed community. It also elicited changes in the offers of local tour operators who were forced to open other destinations. To a lesser extent, it affected the feeling of discomfort of provincial inhabitants resulting from the lack of opportunity to make such trips.

The purpose of the article is to determine the importance of education for the development of religious tourism. Three dimensions of education are considered: knowledge, skills and attitudes, which are related to tourist service providers categorised as either having direct or indirect contact with religious tourists. An additional objective is to investigate whether there are differences regarding perceptions of the need for education on religious tourism in various sample European countries. The study was qualitative in nature, using a triangulation of methods combining expert interviews and focus group interviews conducted in 6 European countries (Poland, Spain, Greece, Italy, Romania, Bulgaria). The research showed that education should play an important role in creating a religious tourism product. It was noted, however, that the exact type of education may differ slightly for those directly involved in serving tourists and for those who do not interact directly with them. However, there were no significant differences in terms of the countries from which the respondents came.

Getting to know the social and spatial conditions of the sustainable development of cultural and religious tourism seems to be an important and timeless problem, because the interest in this form of travel in Poland is not waning. Among tourists – pilgrims there are many people with different disabilities, the elderly and families with young children. However important, the issue of the accessibility of sanctuaries for these groups of tourists has not been the material of a broader and in-depth scientific study in Poland so far, which encourages us to consider these issues in our scientific research. A detailed analysis of the problem, focused on the possibility of removing technical, architectural and spatial barriers in the sanctuaries and in the surroundings of holy sites, seemed to the authors of particular importance in the context of the expected pilgrimage movement in Poland in 2016, in which year the international World Youth Day was organized. One of the assumed and achieved application effects of the research study was the development of the ‘Accessible Sanctuary Card’ (ASC), helpful for the practical assessment of the accessibility of places of religious worship for people with various types of disabilities. The presented paper contains the research final conclusions of the project No. 245 AWF Warsaw (grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education undertaken in 2014–2018).

Our Lady of Gietrzwałd from 1877 represents a watershed moment in the history of Warmia. Call the Mother of God expressed in the Polish language of the Holy Rosary revived pilgrimages. Despite the restrictive provisions of the Prussian administration, many Poles were able to secretly cross borders to come here to pray. The dynamics of the movement to the World War I was high, as evidenced by the material quoted in press reports published in “Gazeta Olsztyńska”. Till now the nature of this sanctuary has national and patriotic signs.

The paper analyses the tourism resources in the Massif of Montserrat, located near the metropolitan area of Barcelona (Spain) and protected as a natural park. The area is characterized by favorable conditions for pilgrimage and spiritual retreats as well as for various forms of physical and intellectual leisure activities. The landscapes created by the surreal rock formations with the unique plant communities protected as a natural park are the “magnet” for tourists. The Montserrat Abbey dedicated to the Holy Virgin is one of the oldest centers of the Benedictine spirituality in Europe, expanding its mission of integration of the faith and culture in society, favoring the strengthening of the Catalan national identity based on the Christian roots. Pilgrimage traditions have been revived and the tourist offer has been adapted to the profile of the modern visitor. The infrastructure embraces a developed system of tourist facilities, excellent road and public transport and a good network of hiking trails. The integration of the nature tourism and cultural tourism is being achieved by the sustainable management of the area through the collaboration of local authorities and stakeholders.

Niedostrzeganie w podejmowanych przez teoretyków ruchu turystycznego badaniach wymienionych aspektów szczegółowych dotyczących turystyki religijnej zachęca do podjęcia rozważań nad problematyką społecznych i przestrzennych uwarunkowań turystyki religijnej.

Knowing the extent of the detailed conditions for sustainable development of culture – religion tourism seems to be an important issue, because interest in religious tourism, pilgrimages, cultural and religious tourism in Poland seemed to be unabated. Its scale is millions of tourists annually visiting the most popular sanctuaries (Jasna Góra, Piekary Śląskie, Licheń, Kraków-Łagiewniki). In Warsaw and Mazowsze such places of worship willingly visited by tourists are Niepokalanów and the Stanislaus Kostka Church. Location of religious sanctuaries in the immediate vicinity of housing complexes may result in increasing conflict at the level of: tourists – local community (which we know in general terms from the press). The issue was not yet material for broader and deeper scientific studies in Poland. Another topic that was particularly important in the studies undertaken was the problem of accessibility sanctuaries for people with disabilities. It should be emphasized that skipping mentioned topics takes place, despite the relatively high popularity of the subject of research more generally, who willingly take many authors. Hence the interest in exactly these highlighted thematic threads and an interest in exact discernment. Weight of the precise of discernment seems to be particularly in the context of pilgrims expected in Poland in 2016, on the occasion of World Youth Day, as well as in subsequent years, what will be the likely consequence of this yearʼs celebrations. In this text we presented the first findings of research carried out under ds.-245 AWF Warsaw (Higher Education grant for the years 2015–2018).

W 2003 r. europejska sieć Camino de Santiago – Drogi św. Jakuba – dotarła do granicy niemiecko-polskiej w Görlitz – Zgorzelec. W następnym roku grupa miłośników Szlaku Jakubowego w Polsce rozpoczęła prace nad wytyczeniem i oznakowaniem pierwszych polskich odcinków szlaku pielgrzymkowego do Santiago de Compostela. W kolejnych latach w wielu regionach Polski pojawiały się inicjatywy oznakowania nowych odcinków Drogi św. Jakuba. Finałem tych projektów jest imponująca liczba 34 oznakowanych polskich odcinków Szlaku św. Jakuba, które łącznie tworzą sieć Camino de Santiago o długości ponad 6 460 km. Przedmiotem badań omówionych w niniejszym artykule były wybrane odcinki Drogi św. Jakuba znajdujące się właśnie na terenie Polski. Badania terenowe przeprowadzono w latach 2006–2017 na 12 takich odcinkach. W sumie, w czasie pieszej wędrówki, przebadano ponad 1 200 km Szlaku św. Jakuba.

In 2003 the European network of Camino de Santiago – Way of St. James reached the border between Germany and Poland in Görlitz – Zgorzelec. In the following year, a group of fans of the Way of St. James in Poland started activities aimed at setting out and marking the first Polish sections of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. In the next years, many regions of Poland witnessed initiatives of marking new sections of the Way of St. James. The projects were finalised with an impressive number of 34 marked Polish sections of the Way of St. James which jointly made the network of Camino de Santiago of a length of more than 6,460 km. Selected sections of the Way of St. James in constitute the subject of research. Field studies were conducted during the years 2006–2017 in twelve Polish sections of Camino de Santiago. A length of more than 1,200 kilometres of the Route of St. James was examined (by walking). The objective of the research was to learn about transformations in the sector of tourism services which occurred on selected Polish sections of the Way of St. James and to analyse entrepreneurial activities undertaken both by local government authorities, tourism associations and organisations, Brotherhoods and Associations of St. James, and businesses in order to develop pilgrimage movements, religious tourism and cultural tourism on the analysed route. When presenting research results, mainly the descriptive and analytical method, cartographic presentations methods and statistical methods have been used. The conducted research has shown that the designing, setting out and marking of 34 Polish sections of Camino de Santiago is mainly the contribution of groups of fans of the Way of St. James, Camino pilgrims, members of the Brotherhoods of St. James and Associations of St. James, and priests. In the majority of cases, this was a “grassroots” initiative and an expression of social entrepreneurship of dozens of people. It was only at subsequent stages of the development of the Way of St. James in individual regions that local government authorities gradually joined “Camino” projects.

This article presents an analysis of the current challenges to the identity of the Christian pilgrim in the face of the dynamic growth of religious tourism. The semantic inflation that results in every wanderer being described as a pilgrim implies a new configuration of pastoral care, especially in terms of responding to the perceived “consumerism of the sacred.” In the context of Z. Bauman’s observations concerning the transformation of the pilgrim into the tourist, the article proposes a reverse type of reflection, that is, how the tourist can become a pilgrim in the reality of modern-day pilgrimage routes. The Camino de Santiago was chosen as the point of reference, and current pastoral activities – both institutional and individual – were analyzed.

The article aims to identify selected factors for the development of religious tourism in Krakow, taking into account the behaviour of travellers. The article identifies important factors influencing the development of religious tourism in a tourist destination such as Krakow, as well as the behaviour of travellers and religious tourists in Krakow. This article used secondary data for 2018–2023 concerning the monitoring of tourist traffic in Krakow and Małopolska collected by the Małopolska Tourist Organisation (MOT). They were based on three research methods: conducting face-to-face interviews by completing electronic questionnaires on visitors to Małopolska, including Krakow; using ICT data warehouses; analysing existing data. Based on the research, it was found that the city of Krakow has predispositions for the development of religious tourism. The city has numerous shrines associated with the worship of the God, the Virgin Mary and Krakow's saints and blessed. Mention should also be made of the Jewish community, for whom the grave of Moses Isserles in the Remuh cemetery is a regular point of visit. Increasing the number of participants in this type of tourism can be achieved, among other things, by effective promotional activities through new media, creating a calendar of religious tourism events, establishing cooperation between the city and organizers of religious tourism from Krakow and foreign markets.

The article examines the impact of modern demographic changes on oasis holiday retreats organized within the Archdiocese of Przemyśl. Classifying this form of leisure as religious tourism helps to better understand the nature of these trips and the characteristics of their participants. Contemporary demographic trends, such as population aging, secularization, and changes in the traditional family model, significantly influence the annual participation levels. Another crucial factor is the broader global and local context affecting public health. For instance, the COVID-19 pandemic completely halted the organization of oasis retreats. These relationships were established through surveys and an analysis of statistical data on these retreats, provided by the Light-Life Movement of the Archdiocese of Przemyśl. The aim of this study is to classify oasis retreats within the framework of tourism and to analyze the impact of demographic changes on their structure within the Archdiocese of Przemyśl. This will be achieved by reviewing literature and statistical data, including the number of participants, their gender, age, and the level of retreat they attended between 2013 and 2022. Additionally, survey results from oasis retreat participants in the Archdiocese of Przemyśl will be examined and compared with national demographic trends over specific years.
