Tajemnica lorda Singelworth once again. Between Irony and Autoirony The article uses autoirony as the fundamental interpretative key to Norwid’s Tajemnica lorda Singelworth. The author puts the analyzed text in biograp- hical, epistolary, and publishing contexts, which produces a new way to understand the novella. This new interpretation suggests reading of Tajemnica as Norwid’s play with his earlier style as well as a attempt at autoironic representation of the textual subject’s attitude.
In his polemic with the author of ‘Powszechna rozwiązłość: Schulz, egzystencja, literatura’, Adam Lipszyc defended a messianic interpretation of Schulz’s work, rejected by Markowski wholesale as based on insufficient textual evidence. According to Markowski all attempts at in scribing Schulz in the messianic tradition, no matter how defined, must fail because they do not acknowledge a parodic and ironic dimension of Schulz’s worldview, which ruins any serious access to religious thinking of which messianism is a clear example
W artykule została przeprowadzona interpretacja utworu Tadeusza Różewicza przyj dziewczę przyj z tomu Kup kota w worku (2008). Konteksty współczesnych przemian kulturowych pozwalają odczytywać utwór jako wyrazisty akt sprzeciwu wobec rozpadu więzi wspólnotowych i erozji reguł komunikacji. W przestrzeni wirtualnej zastępującej dziś wcześniej funkcjonujące obiegi komunikacyjne dochodzić może, zdaniem Różewicza, jedynie do kalekiej i podlegającej rozmaitym zafałszowaniem symulacji porozumienia.
It seems that Tadeusz Różewicz’s poem titled Francis Bacon or Diego Velazquez in a Dentist’s Chair is dedicated to the works of the author of Studies of Crucifixion. In fact, Różewicz writes about the impression that Bacon’s art left on him when he saw it in galleries and museums. This poem is also about fascination. Contrary to what may seem intuitive, it is not an attempt to describe the poet’s own way of interpreting these works; and even if so, this is only true to a limited extent. For Różewicz, Bacon’s works were just a pretext to look at himself, especially at his own early poems, from a distance – from a somewhat ironic distance. In this way the poet is able to present himself as “the other”, thus referring to the title of Paul Ricoeur’s book.
The paper develops a speech-act based account of communicative irony. A central idea behind the proposed model is that verbal acts of ironizing fall under what John L. Austin called the doctrine of the etiolation of language. After discussing the notion of communicative irony construed along the lines of Mitchell S. Green’s model of expressive communication, we elaborate on the Austinian idea of linguistic etiolation by contrasting the serious and etiolated uses of language, where the latter are parasitical on the mechanisms of the former. We argue that echoing and overt pretending are two complementary techniques of linguistic etiolation that enable one to perform acts of expressing one’s negative attitudes towards contextually available mental or linguistic representations. We also show that the proposed model of linguistic etiolation allows us to account for a number of verbal cases of communicative irony.

Stanisław Barańczak’s poems share one common feature, that is their exquisitely well-thought and refined construction. The lyrical subject of Barańczak’s poetry is shaped by the application of ironic devices. It is irony that allows to create a "protective zone" by which the poet encircles the most complicated issues connected with the understanding of people (in a poetic, but also in a philosophical sense). On the basis of selected examples, the article presents some communicative aspects of the poetic discourse of irony. A poet aware of his own technique (he was also a literary researcher), Barańczak was seeking for a modern and up-to-date research formula in which the play with irony and vivid functionalism of the subject within the scope of the poem are meant to be the major means of conveying poetic sense.

“Hosanna uniesiona na samo dno” – irony in Jerzy Ficowski’s “Odczytanie popiołów” The article is an attempt at interpreting selected poems by Ficowski (*** [nie zdołałem ocalić…], List do Marc Chagalla, Postscriptum listu do Marc Chagalla, Pożydowskie and Wniebowzięcie Miriam z ulicy zimą 1942, included in the volume Odczytanie popiołów). The author focuses on irony, which is particularly noticeable in texts referring to the Bible and religion. Key words: Jerzy Ficowski; Odczytanie popiołów; poetry; irony; Extermination; Jews;
Many contemporary American satirical programs try to convey the importance of critical reception of media reality. Being one of such programs, The Colbert Report uses irony and parody to create comedic materials which blend commentary, serious information, and entertainment. The show’s host, Stephen Colbert, puts on a mask of a conservative news announcer commenting on current political and social affairs by constant parody, since Colbert never leaves his constructed persona, using exaggeration and absurdity to mock contemporary news media, politicians and ideologies. The aim of this paper is a phenomenological analysis of the strategies in which creators of The Colbert Report use parody and irony in media communication. The specific type of irony that Colbert uses is not sarcastic, but it is more of an ironic mode, a mechanism, which is supposed to emphasize the absurdity of a specific media situation. In The Colbert Report, one can differentiate three main ironic mechanisms: context denaturalization, demystification of rhetorical discourse, and intertextual allusions.

Program charakteryzuje trwała parodia, wykorzystująca hiperbolizację i absurd do ośmieszania współczesnych mediów, polityków i ideologii.
Tworzą go działanie twórcze i ironiczna postawa.
The article discusses Family name, a poem by Oleksandr Irwaneć, a contemporary Ukrainian author and former member of the Bu-Ba-Bu literary group. This particular work discloses recognizable traits of the author’s poetry: frivolity, naturalism, the grotesque, irony, and black humour. In the first part of the poem the author plays games with his surname – the same as that of a river in the former principality of Chernigov. In the second part he mocks tempting but deceitful mails about supposedly unexpected inheritances and boasts of his resistance although his irony remains bitter: actually, he would like to receive the offered millions.

Artykuł omawia wiersz Family name Ołeksandra Irwancia, współczesnego ukraińskiego pisarza i byłego członka grupy literackiej Bu-Ba-Bu.
First of all, the presented article offers a novel interpretation of Lord Singleworth’s Secret in the context of Norwid’s anthropology on the one hand, and a historical and cultural background on the other. Norwid’s understanding of “cleanliness,” which was inspired in some measure by the Gospels, had interesting connections with the life circumstances of Norwid himself and the main character of his puzzling short story. The reading of Lord Singleworth’s Secret revolves around the image of a balloon flight during which the lord-according to this interpretation, not alien in Norwidology-throws a paper with “physiological content.” This scene is put in the context of other literary balloon flights, and also, due to Lord Singleworth’s eccentric behaviour, confronted with the manifestations of bizareness organized by Baudelaire’s friend Philoxène Boyer in the 19th century. So it seems that Singleworth is one ofthe most interesting weirdos of the 19th-century literature. Nonetheless, he remains one of the characters for whom we may invoke Norwid’s law of inversion-inferred in the article.

Artykuł stanowi przede wszystkim propozycję nowego odczytania Tajemnicy lorda Singelworth w kontekście Norwidowskiej antropologii z jednej, a tła historyczno-kulturowego z drugiej strony. Scena ta umieszczona zostaje w kontekście innych literackich lotów balonem, a także – w związku z ekscentrycznym zachowaniem lorda – skonfrontowana z manifestacjami dziwności, jakie w Paryżu XIX wieku urządzał przyjaciel Baudelaire’a, Philoxène Boyer. Singelworth wypada zatem na jednego z ciekawych dziwaków literatury dziewiętnastowiecznej. Jednocześnie pozostaje jedną z figur, w związku z którymi przywołać można – wyprowadzone w artykule – norwidowskie prawo inwersji.
Jesús Moncada’s narrative presents an oral substrate in the form of rumours, gossip, grudges or disputes that take place in the little village of Mequinensa, where everyone knows each other. Following the theories of Eric Havelock, Paul Zumthor, and Walter J. Ong, which identify in orality the source of any literary expression, we analyse the evolution of Maquinensan loud secrets and hidden truths into stories and how the skilful writer is able to turn simple anecdotes into great narrative plots. In this paper, several examples from short stories and novels are analysed, and the differences in the role of orality in each genre are described and examined. Furthermore, the role of casual conversation as an oral start-point of Moncada’s stories is highlighted.
The article addresses the issue of truth and its treatment in the fiction of Muriel Spark (1918–2006), who with her first novel, The Comforters, made her name as a distinctly post-modern novelist. The publication of The Comforters coincided with her conversion to Roman Catholicism, and Spark was explicit about the vital influence which her newly-embraced religion had upon her becoming a writer of fiction. The major point in the following argument is Spark’s overt declaration that her writing of novels, which she defines in terms of lies, represents her quest for absolute truth. This apparently paradoxical admission is reflected in Spark’s creative output, which combines most unlikely features: postmodernist leanings, commitment to religious belief and a deep-seated conviction on the part of the author about the irrefutable validity of absolute truth. The article focuses mainly on two of Spark’s novels: The Only Problem and Symposium, which demonstrate the postmodernist perspective with its insistence on the relativity of truth or its outright negation in the form of the concept of “post-truth”. The presented analysis shows how Spark’s narratives pursue truth across the multiplicity of continually undermined meanings jointly generated by the text and the reader as its recipient. The discussion emphasises the irony which Muriel Spark proposes as the most effective strategy for getting an inkling of absolute truth, which remains for Spark a solid though evasive value, hidden under the multiplicity of meanings.

The paper examines selected texts of Jan Dzwonowski, seventeenth–century writer, considered by some scholars as the picaresque (pol. „sowizdrzalski”) author. The author of "Sejm albo konstytucje domowe" and "Statut…" speaks in a satirical, irreverent way, not only about the nearest seventeenth–century plebeian surroundings (minstrel’s family and living environment) as implied by the literal, superficial reading of his works. A deeper analysis of texts allows us to find some ironic statements of subject — jester, who not only mercilessly exposes the true nature of man, but also reveals the sad truth about the laws and institutions created by human society.
The author tries to interpret in a new light a few motifs from Norwid’s masterpiece. It turns out that talking about Chopin changes into remarks on his art, which causes a certain difficulty in differentiating these two planes (biography and music). The motif of the dropped lyre (l. 9) playing spontaneously after Orpheus’ death allows stating that one of the basic themes of Chopin’s Piano is the problem of the life of art after the death of the artist. The poem makes one ask about this particular mystery that decides about the value and immortality of a work of art. Next the historical background is characterized of the origin of the poem and the circumstances and consequences are described of the attempt on the life of Governor Berg, that is, of the events that are thought to be connected with the genesis of the poem. In the last part a new interpretation is presented of the famous ending of the poem (l. 114-117), in which the significance of irony is lessened and the possibility is proposed of an almost literal understanding of the text. It is suggested that the ideal reaching the cobbles should be understood as an analogy to Christ’s Incarnation.

For centuries the face has been considered an important part of the human body. Since ancient times until the present day a close connection with a man's inner (spiritual, psychological) properties has been ascribed to his face. The individual character of a person that finds its reflection in his/her physiognomy is a domain of interest of the portrait as a separate genre in art. The meanings that have been ascribed to the face have to a certain degree determined the ways it has been presented in European visual arts. The image of an ugly face has become one of the variants of presentation of this part of the body. Ugliness of the human face may have various forms. We know of presentations of deformed physiognomies, which resulted from experiencing strong emotions, as well as of images of evil figures to whom ugliness is ascribed as a feature resulting from the moral appraisal. One of the kinds of portrait compositions using deformed shapes of the face is caricature. It aims at ridiculing the presented person by deforming and magnifying its chosen features. Ugliness is in a way connected with humor. This connection can be seen, among others, in caricature that arouses amusement. Among the presentations that provoke laughter several varieties of humor may be distinguished. One of its kinds is irony. The main motif of the present paper is searching for this kind of humor, in which the element of criticism and of ridiculing another person can be seen. Two Quentin Metsys’s paintings were analyzed: „Ecce homo” from the Palazzo Ducale in Venice and „A Grotesque Old Woman” from the National Museum in London. Some traits of irony that are suggested in these works are an inspiration for further studies in this field.
The article examines the relationship between irony and virtue in works by Cyprian Norwid and Zbigniew Herbert, arguing that these concepts are crucial for both authors. As such, the article is situated in the area of studies devoted to the presence of the Norwidian tradition in writings by Herbert. His famous poem “Mr. Cogito on Virtue” is a case in point. A close reading of this piece makes it possible to claim that Herbert’s considerations of virtue are modelled on Norwid’s ironic imagination, with irony revealed as one possible incarnation of virtue. Development of images representing the two concepts bases on personification of allegory, made accessible and unique thanks to the de-conventionalizing gesture of anthropomorphism, which causes the images of both female heroines to turn ironic. An important place in these considerations is occupied by the relationship between virtue and irony in a cultural perspective, which is aptly rendered by the metaphor of sisterhood. As the sister of truth, irony is also the sister of virtue. A form of axiological memory, virtue conditions civilizational progress. The irony of the situation diagnosed by both poets consists in the reversal of meanings and values, as a result of which mockery leads to the rejection of the only guarantee of development, while the accompanying fear of ridicule causes most people to refrain from leading virtuous lives, paradoxically foreclosing growth. The relationship between virtue and irony would thus consist in disclosing the improper character of this situation. At the same time, irony is revealed as the answer to today’s lack of virtue brought about by deterioration premised on the rejection of “thinking in terms of values.” Accordingly, the greatest import of the relation between irony and virtue seems to consist in the attempt to restore axiological order.

Podstawę dla budowania obrazowych przedstawień obu pojęć stanowią zabiegi personifikacji alegorii, którym nośność i oryginalność zapewnia dekonwencjonalizujący gest równoczesnej antropomorfizacji, prowadzący do ironizacji w ujęciu obu kobiecych bohaterek.
