In line with the assumption that the Catholic Church is (still) an underestimated but salient transnational religious actor, the text examines Pope Francis’ Messages Urbi et Orbi. Similarly to other papal speeches, they have received little academic attention to date. As for its theoretic-methodological underpinnings, the text draws upon Norman Fairclough’s approach to critical discourse analysis (CDA) and employs some parts of his analytical framework to reveal a mental map charted through Francis’ Urbi et Orbi. It is a map of insufficient human dignity showing both certain international evidences of and a religious solution to the inadequate dignity of human beings. In its conclusion, the text points to power elements in the present Pope’s mental map.

The article presents how the discursive discrimination of homosexuals serves nationalism in the contemporary Polish society. Following a brief conceptual location of homophobia within the ideological movement of nationalism, the exemplar homophobic discourse of the Polish nationalists, i.e. that of the League of Polish Families (LPR), is examined through the interdisciplinary method of critical discourse analysis (CDA). In the theoretical part, the sexual minority is applied the status of the “stranger” discussed in cultural sociology; the nationalist is in turn conceptualized as a social-phenomenological actor, who perceives and categorizes the sexual “stranger” by using the knowledge circulating at the Schützean lifeworld. The CDA of the discriminatory discourse of LPR politicians, who represent such homophobic nationalists, attests that homosexuals are mobilized as the “fantasmatic” stranger in today’s Poland.

This article explores the postures of the last three former US presidents towards North Korean nuclear issue. The study applies Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis (CDA) model as a new approach to examine this topic. By analyzing 17 speech corpuses, this study sheds light on the foreign policy adapted G. W. Bush, Obama, and Trump to address North Korea Nuclear issue. Theoretically, the study uses both Waltz’s foreign policy analysis model and Aristotle modes of persuasion to analyze the findings. It also clarifies the original foundations of each presidents’ foreign policy based on the four American IR school of thoughts. Results indicate that the legacy of the Cold War continues to shape and influence the stances of US presidents toward DPRK, despite the differences in their rhetorical and political strategies. While this study focuses individually on presidents as the main unit of analysis, future studies can further expand the use of CDA analysis to examine the stances of other key decision makers in the presidents’ administration to fully understand the relation between discourses and power structure.

The subject of the study presented in the article is the popular Myers-Briggs personality test, and the goal is to demonstrate the potential that this test has as tool for the reproduction of power and further influence on human identity in postmodern times of uncertainty. Its main conclusions are embedded in the theoretical framework of the culture of algorithms created on the basis of the need to simplify various elements of the world. They draw attention to the social dimension of identity and the process of quantification to which it is subjected. The reduction of personality to numbers is carried out not only at the level of dividing socjety into 16 types, but also, among other things, through the use of an answer scale in a test, the presentation of character traits by percentages or letter abbreviations describing individual types. Critical discourse analysis was used as a research method.

The year 1970 is considered one of the most important turning points in the history of Polish-German relations. The signing of an agreement between the Polish People’s Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany on the foundations of the normalisation of mutual relations was the central event of this year. The aim of this article is to reconstruct the press discourse on Polish-West German relations. The paper uses qualitative content analysis and critical discourse analysis (CDA). The adopted methodology enabled answering the questions how the press assessed the possibilities of fulfilling Polish demands in connection with the SPD-FPD coalition coming to power in Germany, how it presented the key issues of Polish-West German relations – which issues were highlighted and which were omitted – and whether the role of the press in the period under study went beyond journalistic coverage of events. The research material entailed the publications of Trybuna Ludu and Życie Warszawy dailies, as well as of the available sources documenting the preparation and course of negotiations on the normalization treaty. The study showed that the presented discourse was consistent with the assumptions of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL) foreign policy at that time. The Polish reader is introduced to the position of the Polish United Workers’ Party (Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza, PZPR) leadership and the Polish interpretation of the normalization treaty. The signing of the treaty was advertised as a success, and was a bid to legitimize communist rule in Poland. The press campaigns were intended to support the negotiations and reinforce the arguments used during the confidential talks, and it can be assumed that these campaigns were also aiming at an audience in Germany. There were one-sided interpretations in the dailies, attempts to “favour” the German coalition parties, in particular the SPD, or to evoke particular associations. Certain content was omitted or kept silent. This practice had a negative impact on the desire, visible at that time, to present differentiated reporting on Polish foreign policy in respect to Germany.
