The theory and works of the Futurists are characterized by fascination with movement, the dynamism of things and the surrounding reality. Futurists’ interest in the notion of energy gave a privileged place in their works to visual rhythm. Rhythmic repetition of dissected forms not only allowed to suggest the motion of represented objects, but the abstracted, repetitive patterns created a rhythmic pulsation directly perceived by the viewer. The rhythm of the painting, created by rhythmic vibration and pulsation of shapes and colors, was to give intimation of the universal vibration and interpenetration of matter.

This work is a critical edition of seven letters written by Stefania Skwarczyńska to Anatol Stern from 1966 to 1968. Covering a variety of topics, such as prospective academic projects, contacts with local publishers or recollections of Futurism with which Stern was associated in the interwar period, the letters provide insight into the relationship between the scholar and the poet. The source material is accompanied by comments and a note accounting for decisions taken and modifications made by the editor.

A Name in a Buttonhole - Onymy in Poetic Texts (Based on the Example of Bruno Jasieński’s Poetry)This article addresses the issue of the interpretation of proper names in poetry. The state of research on the functions of proper names in literature is well described, but it is possible to note the lack of a fixed interpretation strategy in poetry which means that, despite little interest in poetry, its researchers often try to propose their own methods of analysis. The authors of the article, who tackle onyms in the poetry of Bruno Jasieński, present their own methodological approach to the matter, based on B. Waldenfels’ concept of the “phenomenology of the alien”.

Dramaturgia przełomu XIX i XX wieku stanowi niezwykle ciekawe zjawisko.
XX
Dramaturgy of 19th and 20th century breakthrough is an amazingly interesting phenomenon. It is full of various concepts, ideas, researches and questions. There is one question which is obviously one of the most exposed places, the question of sense (or nonsense) of culture, civilisation and world. It seems that dramaturges of that period, in deep belief about the coming end of existing values, peace and sense try to find and present in their pieces of art the world of the future—created from searching and belief. Among the dramas from that period we can find both eschatological prophesies and most remote visions of peaceful world, therefore they are characteristic searching of sense in nonsense. Furthermore, among them we can find various outlooks on life, creating sense worlds: from Solovyov’s land of Souls World through religious reminiscences and transformations to futuristic pictures.

The subject of this article is Guillaume Faye’s concept of archeofuturism. In Faye’s opinion, Europe finds itself now in crisis, which will lead it to the implosion of the contemporary sociopolitical order. He thinks that archeofuturism is the way to overcome the crisis. The text outlines the concepts of the convergence of catastrophes, vitalistic constructivism, and archeofuturism. To sum up – the article describes the contemporary state of Europe (in Faye’s perspective) and the method for revolutionary change.

The exhibition “Enrico Prampolini. Futuryzm, scenotechnika i teatr polskiej awangardy” (“Enrico Prampolini. Futurism, Stage Design and the Polish Avant-gard Theatre”), open at the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź between 9 June and 10 October 2017, was one of the most intense encounters with the Avant-garde last year, which was a jubilee year. The exhibition offered an erudite journey that followed the interests of the curator Przemysław Strożek, a student of Italian Futurism and its reception in Poland. Despite a clearly defined goal of setting side by side the creations of Prampolini and the achievements of Polish Avant-garde theatre, it was not a classical “thesis exhibition,” which can be regarded as the curator’s fault or as his credit, and the judgment on this point depended mostly on how well versed in Avant-garde movements the viewer was. A complex, multi-threaded narrative that the exhibits amassed in a rich and representative selection were telling proved not accessible enough for some of the public, while other visitors found it exquisitely enlightening. The connexions between avant-gardists of different countries were displayed in a subtle way, and the space in which the visitors could explore them afforded a chance to investigate the exhibition freely and at one’s own pace. The endevour was all the more appealing due to the fact that the setting made a clear linear narrative virtually impossible, favouring a meandering and dialogical tale instead. The outcome was a fascinating maze of compelling, and sometimes difficult to discern, feedback relations between the Polish and Italian avant-gardes of the 1920s and 1930s.

Wystawa Enrico Prampolini. Zagadnienie międzynarodowych kontaktów pomiędzy przedstawicielami awangardy zaprezentowane zostało w sposób nienachalny, a oddana do użytku zwiedzającego przestrzeń dawała możliwość swobodnej, dostosowanej do stopnia znajomości tematu, eksploracji. Przedsięwzięciu temu sprzyjał teren ekspozycji, który, uniemożliwiając zastosowanie w pełni konsekwentnej, linearnej narracji, skłaniał do opowieści meandrującej i dialogicznej. W efekcie powstał fascynujący labirynt zaprezentowanych sugestywnie, a niekiedy także ukrytych sprzężeń zwrotnych, zachodzących pomiędzy polską i włoską awangardą lat 20. i 30. XX wieku.

Regarded primarily as a scandalist, Bruno Jasieński is also an innovator and ‘theoretician’ of the avant-garde. Then, so the argument, he converted to Communism and put his pen in the service of that ideology. He paid for it with the price of debasing his talent to the level of a socialist realist hack and, eventually, the price of his life when the regime he so avidly supported turned on him in the great purges of 1937–38. This article takes issue with the claim – which is part of the generally accepted narrative – that Jasieński ‘swerved gently to the left’ in 1923–1925. This article analyses the politics of young Bruno Jasieński's verse, i.e. the texts produced before 1921, the year of the publication of the first collection of his poems. In so far as his early poetic work contains nothing but praise of the Russian revolution and its ethos, his ideological evolution in the nineteen twenties should termed radicalization rather than a shift to the left.

The article is focused on ethical issues of avant-garde. It’s important especially for creation ex nihilo, which redefined ontology of work of art. Modern artists didn’t limit only for aesthetic, but they want to create whole cultural project. Characteristic for modern art is complex of diagnosis (of crisis of culture), reaction for new reality and project of future culture. The same is for ethical issues. In the same time: rebellion for culture and it’s collapse and creating the new way of ethic – in work of art and in culture. That’s why the article is focused on literary text and commentaries. These problems was overlooked in reading of avant-garde creation.

The purpose of this article is to present futurism as an underlying ideology present in the discourse of dietary advice published in women’s magazines in the 1970s in Poland. Futurism is one of the ideological features of the so-called high modernism. It is characterized by glorification of the future along with utopian visions of its shape, the desire to conquer world of nature with the use of technology, and historicism, i.e. the belief in linear development of mankind, which is heading toward “modernity.” The empirical study consisted of finding traits of futurism in the text of dietary advice from two of the most popular Polish women’s magazines of the 1970s: “Przyjaciółka” (“Friend”) and “Kobieta i Życie” (“Woman and Life”). The chosen method included sociologically-oriented discourse analysis. The analysis of the collected sources allowed me to argue that futurism was an important ideological factor shaping the dietary advice published in Poland in the 1970s. This observation sheds a new light on the culinary culture of the People’s Republic of Poland and opens up new interpretative possibilities.

The aim of this preliminary insight is to explicate the relationships between the masculinities of Italian, Russian and Polish futurisms. The article, by examining the manifestos and poetry of Polish futurists, shows an inclusive and prospective masculinity project proposed by this movement. Another important objective of this research is to propose an interpretation of the masculinist ideologies of futurism as the “masculinities of tomorrow,” which should be valid in the future and should act as a cure for the peripheral status of the region and variously defined “crisis.”

This article is an attempt to interpret Alicja Stern’s novel Ciała się oddalają [Bodies Are Moving Away], which was published in 1931 in six installments in the weekly feminist magazine for Jewish women Ewa [Eve]. The author of the article attempts to analyze the text as one of the few feminist literary responses to futurist slogans, ideas, and rhetoric in Poland. The parodic frame of the novel is emphasized. The article argues that thanks to parody Alicja Stern could both critique conservative romance formulas from a feminist perspective and ironically re-evaluate avant-garde postulates. References to the New Woman and critical intertextual games with stereotypical notions of female subjectivity and sexuality are also identified and discussed.

Analizuje nowatorskie techniki prozatorskie artystów Nowej Sztuki, zderzając je z ówczesnymi i aktualnymi prądami filozoficznymi. Pokazuje, że proza B. Jasieńskiego, A. Wata, A. Sterna i innych futurystów jest wciąż ważnym doświadczeniem literackiej i literaturoznawczej samoświadomości.

The article undertakes the problems of novel theory based on artistic solutions proposed by futurists. It analyzes the innovative prose techniques of Nowa Sztuka (New Arts) artists, clashing them with contemporary and current philosophical trends. It shows that the prose of B. Jasieński, A. Wat, A. Stern and other futurists is still an important experience of the literary and literature-scientific self-consciousness.

Artykuł Iwony Mikołajczyk Estetyczne aspekty przestrzeni formistycznej: Czyżewski – Chwistek – Witkacy ujmuje formizm polski w aspekcie związków z metanarracją i abstrakcją. Analiza formy dzieł trzech twórców dowodzi, iż w dialektyce rozwoju kierunku artyści albo wychodzili od przedmiotu, albo go aproksymowali (oddawali w dużym przybliżeniu). Albo stanowiło znak rozwoju artystycznego samego artysty.
EN
Iwona Mikołajczyk’s article looks at the Polish formist movement from the point of view of its relations with meta-narration and abstraction. A formal analysis of the works by the three above-mentioned artists proves that within the dialectical development of this current the artists were either using the object as the point of departure or else approximating it. As an artistic sign, the object was a pretext for them to play a meta-aesthetic game with the artistic convention. On the other hand, the synthesis and autonomy of the object leads formism toward abstraction. This sense of being suspended between metalanguage and abstraction (also present in futurism and cubism) was caused by fears of breaking with tradition too completely and thus crossing the boundaries of intelligibility. Or else it was a sign of the artistic development of the artist himself.

The author of the paper examines the emancipatory discourses in the programmatic texts of the Polish Futurism, focusing on the issues of class and sex equalities, on postulates of art socialising, and on the role that language might perform in the project conceived in the aforementioned dimension. The article also touches the problem of the Polish Futurists’ attitude to past and tradition, convincing that their stance that aimed at burying tradition proved to have more in common with building the “new” than with destroying everything which belonged to past at all costs. In line with the thesis that Futurism met with favourable conditions in peripheral and semi-peripheral regions, “futurisation” was to have performed the function of modernisatory discourse. The paper’s line of reasoning is set in the terms rooted the philosophy by Jacques Rancière, by Michel Foucault, in Immanuel Wallerstein’s world-systems theory, and in settlements by female and male feminist criticism researchers.

Belarusian literature of the interwar period reflected such an important issue as the interpretation of scientific and technological progress in an opposition to civilization and culture in theoretical and literary texts. This topic in the article is discussed from the point of view of both actual philosophical context and aesthetic quest. We are talking about the original theoretical development of Belarusian intellectuals of the early twentieth century as well as considerable importance and mastering of foreign experience because 1920s and 1930s witnessed an increased attention to various aspects of the topic in Belarusian humanistic space. This was due both to general tendencies in the European philosophy and art, and to the fact that after the victory of the Russian Revolution of 1917, publications of the 1920s called to create a new type of culture. The analysis of literary and cultural texts of E. Borichevsky, P. Dvarkevich, A. Babareka, T. Klyashtorny and other authors enables to conclude that the context of Belarusian literature and culture of the 1920s and 1930s reflects not only the high aesthetic level of poetry and criticism, but also the desire to comprehend most significant problems of human existence and complicated relations between civilization and culture.

The article constitutes an attempt at analysing futurist pronatalist discourse, on the basis of the manifestos and artistic praxis of the Futurists. The reproduction postulates, prevalent in the works of the Polish Futurists and usually placed in the context of vitalism, characteristic of the 1920s, are shown from a biopolitical perspective, emphasizing the intersection of the biological with the political and social horizons. The author attempts to trace especially the political entanglements of the “population project” of the Polish Futurists, which turns out be marked by numerous paradoxes, situating itself between the pronatalist rhetoric typical of nationalistdiscourse (on the one hand, the discourse promoted by F.T. Marinetti, and on the other, the one formulated in Poland directly after regaining independence) and thinking in terms of a community which starts from the material functions of the body. In this second context, the reproduction postulates are not only an attack on bourgeois morality, but are closely connected with the futurist critique of all social institutions and the state apparatus with its biopolitical dispositions.

The aim of this paper is to present a detailed analysis and interpretation of two poems: A Cloud in Trousers (1915) and At the Top of My Voice (1930). The first, in the manner of an extended metaphor, announces the necessity of redefining the political and social reality, while the latter, concerns itself with the accounts settled in the Soviet reality. In the poet’s lyrical (post-futuristic) attempts one can very often find a lively apologia for the ideas of the constructed system: support for revolutionary movements, a proposal to create generally accessible, universally comprehensible art for the masses. In a much later poem from the 1930s, Mayakovsky again and again, expresses his failure in conveying his political ideas and rebellion, which – in his opinion – has its cause in the misunderstanding of his work. These issues are often presented by the author of The Bedbug in the form of bitter irony, in a style and imagery distinctive of him. On the basis of texts by 20th century literature researchers, as well as in reference to the biography of Mayakovsky, the study analyses various themes and their execution in the selected works of the poet.

Analyzing the relationships between art and fashion, I will refer to the category the Other/ identical. For several decades, it has been popular in the humanistic debate, subject to various interpretations (Derrida, Foucault, feminism, post-colonialism). In the meaning adopted here, just as the Other is a condition for the existence of the identical, so, I believe, fashion is a point of reference for art. It functions as an element allowing art to build its identity on being different from it. This situation was particularly evident in the first half of the 20th century. In the introductory part of my paper, I will present some examples of avant-garde artists' involvement in the design of clothing treated on an equal footing with artistic activity. For the Futurists and Constructivists, the Other and the identical were equal. The second part of the paper describes the situation that arose at the end of the 20th century, when equality between the Other and the identical took a different form. The identical started imitating the Other – art now resembles a fashion show, advertising photography or a luxury boutique. This reveals the anti-nomical character of art, its secret connection with fashion, anticipated by Theodor W. Adorno. Contemporary art no longer has the strength to resist it. They blend into the aesthetic visual sphere.

This article is an attempt at interpreting the experimental verse of two Warsaw Futurists, Aleksander Wat's namopaniki and Anatol Stern's romans Peru [A romance of Peru]. A series of analyses, conducted from the perspective of the materiality of language, indicates that the key to the generic status of Wat's verse is to be sought in the concept of metamorphism. Indeed, his namopaniki are best described as metamorphic poems in which the dynamic of transformation gets the better of both their linguistic material and their presumptive subjects. By associating the linguistic experiments of the two Warsaw Futurists, who came from Jewish families, with the situation of ‘being a stranger to one's language’ (Deleuze and Guattari) and Jacques Derrida's chafing at monolingualism, the article argues that Wat's and Stern's early poetic practice represents a turn to ‘minority art’, i.e. a form of discourse subversive of the dominant hierarchies of the ‘majority’ language and literature. Furthermore, the Deleuzian concept of minor literature (littérature mineure) may be used to seek a finer differentiation between the Warsaw Futurist avant-garde and the East or West European models of Futurism and Dadaism.
