The paper is an attempt to interpret the work of Krystyna Miłobędzka, one of the most celebrated contemporary Polish poets, in terms suggested by the ideas of the community of readers as well as the institution of the poetry reading understood as a phenomenological/communal event. The analysis is informed by the recently published volume znikam jestem [I disappear I exist], a record of four poetry readings given by Miłobędzka between 2000 and 2010.
This interpretative essayistic article is devoted to a detailed micrological analysis of Krystyna Miłobędzka’s poems in her book Imiesłowy (Participles). The author attempts to show how three punctuation signs – two commas and one hyphen – can diametrically alter the surface interpretation of a work in the event of such seemingly minor details being omitted. In his conclusion, the author raises the question of whether it is possible, within a micrological analysis, to speak of separating interpretation from the philologist-collector’s pure overinterpretation.

Although dwanaście wierszy w kolorze by Krystyna Miłobędzka was released a few years ago, in 2012, it has not provoked much discussion. This article is a cautious attempt to interpret oneof these poems in the context of the whole collection. It emphasizes certain issues addressed therein, such as man’s separation from the world, the transience of life and the problem of internal conflict.
The article is devoted to the 1984 publication entitled Wykaz treści by Krystyna Miłobędzka. The author shows the multi-faceted nature of the poetic subject and the ways of its creation. She finds that liminality is a category which helps to understand the concept of subjectivity in Miłobędzka’s poetry. Additionally, the author focuses on the opposition between language and speech, poetry and reality, writing and experience. But the key aspect of Miłobędzka’s poetry is its “staginess” and its interconnection with the liminality of the subject, the material qualities of her voice and her use of language variations.

The paper offers a proposal to synthesise the floral motifs in Krystyna Miłobędzka’s poetry. An analysis of such verses and themes leads to forming a conclusion that the speaking subject employs these motifs to express the need to stick to the inhuman sphere, but also the belief into the power and immortality of plants. The balance between weak/invincible grass and power/ changeability of a tree forms in the poems a poetics of relation with the plant element. The biophilia, which is inscribed into Miłobędzka’s pieces, also shows the aporias that lay at the foundation of her identity construction.
A fragment of Krystyna Miłobędzka’s theatre play for children Na wysokiej górze. Commedia della lingua (1990) was published separately (2014, 2017) as a work of both Krystyna Miłobędzka and Iwona Chmielewska, an author of picture books. Chmielewska tones down the word play in Miłobędzka’s text. Instead, she introduces images of the poet at different ages, depicted in contemplative poses, and presents the character’s epiphanic experience beyond time and space. The images and the text constitute separate, sylleptic sequences. The meditative atmosphere of Chmielewska’s illustrations adequately conveys the worldview of Miłobędzka – a “linguistic” poet, who refers to the poetry of the Far East.
The article is devoted to Krystyna Miłobędzka’s texts for children’s theatre. Demonstrating the kinship between the characteristic ways of thinking of poet and child, the author analyses how space is created – the space for both child’s play and poetic ritual. Highlighted in the work is the idea of how things are done through the use of clich´es, child’s words and rhymes in poetic language. The main character of Miłobędzka’s scripts is language – its potential and power for creation.
The paper deals with the topic of ecologically oriented poetry of Krystyna Miłobędzka as a vital tradition for 21st-century Polish ecopoets. The author tries to trace the changes in the poetic canon after 1990 and shows the increasing interest in Miłobędzka’s poetry among modern poets. By analyzing mainly meta-poetic texts, the paper contrasts Miłobędzka’s posthumanistic, “event-driven” way of writing with the humanistic lyrical subject of Wisława Szymborska’s poetry. The author presents the former as more influential and more productive for modern, ecopoetic styles, including elements such as: waking the awareness, organic perspective of language, an egalitarian way of life and thinking about relations in categories of space and adhesion rather than domination.
The article is an attempt to place Krystyna Miłobędzka’s poetry in the context of ecopoetics and to see whether such a targeted reading will open the poet’s lyrical works to new interpretative practices, which are becoming increasingly popular among researchers. In the discussion about the output of the author of Anaglify [Anaglyphs], natural motifs and themes appear relatively often, but so far they have rarely been treated as the main, independent subject of analysis. This sketch, through the interpretation of individual works, shows how nature, in this case especially that appearing in different forms of trees, in the volumes published in turn shape Miłobędzka’s writer’s imagination and inscribe themselves in the poetic project she has developed, which goes beyond the framework of literary strategy and whose assumptions allow it to be placed in the area of ecopoetics.

The paper is an attempt at reconstructing the poetics of early texts by Krystyna Miłobędzka, mostly the book of poems Spis z natury, written in 1960s – Miłobędzka’s poetic debut, unpublished at the time. By reading together the two poetic cycles comprising it – Anaglify and Małe mity – the author stresses the need to extend the non-anthropocentric reading to Anaglify with a postsecular interpretation implied by the multilevel structure of Małe mity. The paper also discusses four poems by Miłobędzka – Małże, Widziane w ogniu, Patrzące chwytliwe and Klee – published in 1960s in “Twórczość” magazine, not included in any book of poems. This allowed to identify possible relations between Miłobędzka’s early poetry and works by Francis Ponge and Paula Klee.

The article is focused on the early poetry of Krystyna Miłobędzka viewed from the perspective of the so-called turn towards the things context known from the literary and anthropological studies. The prose poems from Miłobędzka’s debut called Anaglify are chosen for analysis and interpretation. The author discusses the most crucial elements of the background of the texts: the circumstances of Miłobędzka’s debut, consequences of the events of 1956 and the turn towards ordinary things and daily life in the Polish poetry of 1960s. Miłobędzka’s attitude to the material world is presented in the light of the beginnings of modernism (C.K. Norwid) and the postwar poetry concerned with the “life” of objects (M. Białoszewski, Z. Herbert, T. Różewicz). The poetic contemplation of the world of things in Anaglify is confronted with the late philosophy of Martin Heidegger, especially his considerations about the Tool-Being and Thing. Miłobędzka explores the relations between humans and objects, taking the non-anthropocentric perspective and trying to capture the essence of their and our being-in-the-world. In her poetic vision, the thing seems to be released from the obligation to be ready-to-hand and reveals its individual dimension of “being.”
The validity of interpreting Krystyna Miłobędzka’s poetry in relation to the Far Eastern context has at times been questioned. Through juxtaposed analyses of poems and the main features of the traditional aesthetics of Japan and China, the author shows that the collection wszystkowiersze (2000) enters into dialogue with these aesthetics in three aspects. The first aspect is the materiality of notations, in which the contexts of concrete poetry and Eastern calligraphy coincide. The second is elusiveness, thematised in wszystkowiersze and central in Japanese aesthetics, notably in haiku. The third aspect is paradox, inherent to the poems and fundamental to Zen philosophy. Together, they form a complex set of connections, demonstrating the influence of the East on Miłobędzka’s poetry. The conclusions of the text can be useful in a more general study of Far Eastern inspirations in Polish poetry, as well as in considering the poetic forms that give meaning to the very matter of the text.

Zasadność interpretowania poezji Krystyny Miłobędzkiej w odniesieniu do kontekstu dalekowschodniego bywa czasem kwestionowana. Drugi to ulotność, tematyzowana we wszystkowierszach i centralna w estetyce japońskiej, choćby w haiku. Trzeci aspekt to paradoks, wpisany w koncepcję wszystkowiersza i wyznaczający rdzeń filozofii zen. W połączeniu tworzą one kompleksowy zestaw związków, dowodząc wpływu Wschodu na poezję Miłobędzkiej. Wnioski z artykułu mogą być przydatne do ogólniejszych studiów nad inspiracjami Dalekim Wschodem w polskiej poezji oraz do namysłu nad formami poetyckimi nasycającymi znaczeniem samą materię tekstu.
The article is to present a preliminary analysis of chosen archival materials by Tymoteusz Karpowicz and Krystyna Miłobędzka –the representatives of Polish postwar Avant-garde. The study is a part of the multiperspective research on these two partly related poetic projects, which seem to be similar in seeking for experiments and new forms of expression, although they are based on different concepts and stylistics. Further research on the creative processes, exposing the material, dynamic and intentionally open-ended nature of their texts can shed a new light on the history of Polish postwar Avant-garde. The archives of Karpowicz and Miłobędzka remain the ‘works in progress’, which is significant in the context of their creative programs and poetic practices.
The article focuses on the issue of parenthesis in poetic texts, with focus on selected poems by Krystyna Miłobędzka. The analysis leads to the conclusion that interjection, particularly in its parenthetical form, has a different – broader – function in a poem than in other types of texts and is a significant interpretive signal. These reflections also demonstrate how the potential of parenthesis was exploited by the poet to create multiaspectual meanings.

An important, though underestimated theme in Polish poetry written by women is the thread of poetry engaged in social and political matters, thematizing the connection between literature and civic life. Poetesses are often accused of not rooting their works in history and of unwillingness to bring up current topics. Yet the problem is not the lack of interest in history and its political and social dimension, but the distinct way of its conceptualization, the relationship between the individual – though not always revealing its sex – subjective “I” in relation to history and challenges of its times. That is manifested, among others, in poems by Wisława Szymborska, Krystyna Miłobędzka, Bogusława Latawiec and Urszula Kozioł, which, to a different degree, exhibit the strategies of personalization, autobiographication, somatization and trivialization, characteristic of women’s poetry regarding the martial law period in Poland.
