Every period has its own heroes and its own great bestsellers. In this article I will refer to two extremely popular works in their own times. The first is one of the stories from the Magda Trott’s series for girls and young women with the flag character – Pucki, entitled “New Pucki’s Pranks” dating back to 1930s, the second one is a Helene Hegemann novel published in 2010 by Ullstein under the title Axolotl Roadkill. The young women discourse presented on the pages of these two novels cannot be more distinct at first sight. And yet despite distinct differences it includes similar elements. For youth is, almost always, the family problems, the time for first loves or
Australijska Rada Dziecięcej Książki przyznaje wyróżnienia młodym czytelnikom od 1946 roku. W kolejnych latach, respektując częściowo zmiany w czytelnictwie i koncepcjach dzieciństwa oraz uznając nowszą, zdefiniowaną kategorię „nastoletnich”, zasady nagradzania uległy poszerzeniu.

The Children’s Book Council of Australia has been providing awards for young readers since 1946. Over the intervening years categories have been enlarged, acknowledging in part changes in readership and changes in conceptions of childhood and recognising a newer, defined category of ‘teenage’. However, prior to the introduction of the Older Readers category in 1982, there were a number of award-winning books which might well have fitted into that category. This paper will examine books for Older Readers 1972–2022 as a way of comparing Australian attitudes to ‘childhood’ across those decades, recognising that the material young people read often both reflects societal attitudes and reinforces them. What sort of childhood/teenagehood is portrayed, valorised or criticised in these books and have these aspects changed?
Niejako w opozycji do tego nurtu stoi natomiast lista nagród polskiej sekcji IBBY, w której promowano w przeważającej liczbie książki o charakterze obyczajowym, podejmujące trudne i kontrowersyjne problemy dojrzewania, kontaktów międzyludzkich, odmienności itp. W tym kontekście można obserwować zmianę propagowanych wartości i przechodzenie od wychowawczego systemu normatywnego ku gloryfikacji wolności i tolerancji względem szerokiego spektrum zachowań i postaw.

In 2008-2018, the Polish market of young readers’ books was subject to various fluctuations related to economic determinants, demogra-phy and changing cultural trends or fashions. The dynamics of sales was determined by best-selling fantasy series coming mainly from the Anglo-Saxon literature. Although Harry Potter was not followed by an equally successful novel cycle, the main elements of its marketing strategy have been duplicated and continued. An important reinforce-ment of the message was the screening of a particular plot, and thus its multiplication in various media channels. Fantasy themes often re-ferring to the elements of horror, Gothic novels, and even dystopian thrillers dominated. Generic syncretism and even various formal ex-periments in the spirit of deconstruction have become characteristic of the contemporary youth book market. In contrast, the list of awards of the Polish section of the IBBY stands in opposition to this trend, which promoted, in the overwhelming majority, novels of morals na-ture, addressing difficult and controversial problems of adolescence, interpersonal relationships, otherness, etc. In this context, we can ob-serve a change in the values promoted and a transition from an edu-cative normative system to glorifying freedom and tolerance towards a wide range of behaviors and attitudes.
Happy ending is known to every reader and viewer. Happy endings is present in the culture of antiquity. In the literature for children happy ending is often unhappy, goes only unhappy. Science of happiness (polish term: felicytologia) answer questions on happiness in the literature for children and young people. Doing an analysis of the novel in 1994 under the title "Miss Nobody", author: Tomek Tryzna. The novel is about an adolescent girl who is going through a lot of drama. It has various difficult problems, can not find happiness. Her happiness turns out to be really bad luck. The girl decides to commit suicide, because she is very lonely and does not under-stand her family and friends. She has the nickname 'nobody', invented his friends. Nick shows that Mary is insig-nificant person. Marysia falls with love twice in her friends – Kasia end Ewa. Friends do not love her. Happiness and sadness always come together in her life. Children's literature shows how happiness and unhappiness are together in life. The concept of (un)happiness is necessary to describe a novel for young readers, where happiness is often bittersweet.
The purpose of this article is to discuss the mechanisms responsible for the formation of a bestseller, with particular reference to the TikTok platform. The analysis takes Madeline Miller’s Song of Achilles from 2011 as its main object. The article also reveals the changes taking place in the fields of book description and promotion, which increasingly downplay the role of the plot itself and focus on motives, and instead place emphasis on the individual processes of experiencing literary works. The author concludes that the publishing market is on the threshold of a cultural change – it is the young generation and the platforms they use that are driving the publication and promotion of new books in the field of youth literature.

The article analyzes film adaptations of Polish youth literature published in the 21st century and indicates contemporary Polish productions’ cultural codes aimed at young audiences. The following issues appeared attractive: features of works most readily adapted, trends visible in film adaptations understood as reinterpretations of book pre-texts. The researcher used source analysis (film material, streaming services) and a case study. The researcher also used the statistical method to film adaptations’ availability and popularity among young audiences. The study was conducted using the questionnaire technique, and the tool was an electronic questionnaire addressed in the first case to the 14–16 age group. The second questionnaire was addressed to undergraduate students and included a set for writing associations. The analysis of the material refuted the research hypothesis that in contemporary Poland, literary works for young people are eagerly used and adapted for full-length films’ needs. It turned out that the few exceptions were primarily adaptations of fantasy and science-fiction genres. The analysis of cultural codes showed that they form a set of interrelated meanings. This system is dominated by family and friendship relationships, family home, travels, and clock measuring.

This paper reports a survey conducted in May 2010 on a nationally representative sample of fifteen-year-olds from 70 lower secondary schools. The general research question concerned the prevalence of Polish adolescents who did not read books after completing the phase of compulsory education. The aim of this study was to describe the place of books in teenage everyday life in terms of their reading for school, leisure, spontaneous choice of reading matter, their favourites, books they recommended, value placed on enjoyable reading and their social circle of readers. Gender was found to be a differentiating factor in the reading habits of these young people which the paper broadly describes.
‘Koreańska Fala’ (Hallyu) doprowadziła do powstania nowego rozdziału w literaturze indonezyjskiej, a mianowicie utworów literackich traktujących o Korei. Analiza ‘Summer in Seoul’ oraz ‘Oppa and I: Love Signs’ ukazuje koreańskich nastolatków jako ludzi o dojrzałej osobowości, którzy osiągnęli niezależność emocjonalną, moralną, społeczną i intelektualną.

It can be said that Korean Wave has triggered the appearance of a new chapter in Indonesian literature works, namely the emergence of literature works related to Korea. Indonesian writes all of these fictions and majority featuring Korean, especially Korean teenagers as the character and use Korea related problems as story theme, setting, etc. This paper is discussing how Korean teenagers represented in Indonesian teenage literature works. Representation is meant here is as the depiction or reflection that symbolizes social reality. Of course, reality reflected in a literary work is not always an actual fact, there is frequent a tendency of reality idealized by the author, in this case is Indonesian author’s idealism. From the examination undertaken on Summer in Seoul and Oppa and I: Love Signs teenage fictions showed the following results. Seen from the perspective of adolescence developmental psychology, Korean teenagers are constructed as figure who have had mature personality, who have achieved emotional, moral, social, and intellectual independence. As a member of a family, Korean adolescent represented as a son, daughter, brother, and sister who do not only take responsibility for themselves but also for others.

The aim of this article is to read Cherie Dimaline’s The Marrow Thieves (2017) and Hunting by Stars (2021) in the context of Indigenous ways of relating to memory that challenge the limitations of conventional settler modes of remembrance and are crucial for Indigenous survivance. Situating the setting of the narrative within the framework of Native Apocalypse, I move on to examine the novels as acts of sovereign memory-a distinctly Indigenous conception of remembrance that is land-based, embodied, relational and future-oriented. Construed as survivance narratives directed at YA readership, Dimaline’s novels firmly ground a possibility of Indigenous future in the memory of past persistence, resistance and adaptation. Simultaneously, they are meant to unsettle the settlers’ conceptualization of the future, which is characterised by the avoidance of responsibility and the tendency to relegate the Indigenous people to the past.
The authorities in the communist Poland saw literature for children and young people as an important tool in the ideological struggle to be used primarily to educate new generations of citizens in the spirit of the socialist ideology. In the late 1940s and early 1950s there was a marked intensifi cation of the activities of Główny Urząd Kontroli Prasy, Publikacji i Widowisk (the Central Bureau for the Control of the Press, Publishing and Public Performances) in Warsaw and its regional branches. Their objective was undoubtedly to promote the desired content only and this activity is documented by, for example, review reports kept in Archiwum Akt Nowych (the Central Archives of Modern Records) and dealing with books for children and young people submitted for publication. The surviving documents reveal the bureaucratic methods used by this institution and contain interesting examples of the socialist realist newspeak. The review reports indicate a number of strategies applied to impose on young readers the only ideologically correct vision of the world. There are 3 groups of reviews in the analysed materials: negative, positive, and the ones accepting the work in question provided that suggested changes were introduced. Censors examined not only contemporary works; “correction” of classic works (e.g. fairy tales) to adapt them to the offi cial ideology was a fairly common phenomenon. Some subjects (e.g. social transformations, development of rural areas, great industrial investments) were clearly promoted; specifi c types of plots were imposed as well. At the same time some issues, especially those associated with historical facts inconvenient for the new government (Warsaw Uprising, Home Army, social role of the Catholic Church) were either limited or eliminated entirely from works to be published. Censors tried to place the historical- -literary process within the framework of class the struggle. The basic premise of this approach was to be the predominance of realist content, hence the censors’ frequent criticism concerning anthropomorphism, which is characteristic of children’s literature. All works, especially those addressed to young readers, were to be optimistic, imbued with vitality, work ethos and the spirit of collective action. The control apparatus had a signifi cant infl uence on the themes and quality of the works of the “fourth” literature published in 1948–1956, contributing to their schematic character and to the elimination of many eminent writers and poets from circulation.

Children’s literature was one of the most important tools in the process of creating homo sovieticus. After 1991, Ukrainians faced the problem of desovietizing the literary canon. The book market started to change: many translations of world bestsellers appeared, as well as a number of Ukrainian novels for young readers. In the Ukrainian academia too little attention is paid to studying the importance of literature for children and youth, which is one of the key elements in the formation of post-colonial identities. This article contains an overview of the Ukrainian children’s book and press market.

The paper analyzes Małgorzata Musierowicz’s online autobiography based on posts and comments published on her official website, www.musierowicz.com.pl, from 2014 to 2016. First, terms such as official website, blog, autobiographical pact and autobiographical practices are defined. Next, the paper analyzes how Musierowicz constructs her identity as an author, using tools typical for blogs, i.e. posts and comments. The study concludes that Musierowicz consciously uses the specificity of blog for constructing a dialogue with reader and curating her image of a hard-working, skilled author of young adult fiction. Finally, the paper points out to other questions worth considering in the context of Musierowicz’s blog, as well as blog and social media activity of other authors.

The fifth volume of ELSE URY’S Nesthäkchen series, published around 1920, combines typical elements of the “Backfischroman” (teenage girl novel) with motifs of the German Revolution of 1918/1919 and creates a partially heterogenic and partially homogenic narrative. In this context the idea behind the entire series is presented and the way in which the series became part of the process of modernization and politicization of books for girls in the late Empire is discussed. The analysis shows how the text focuses on the revolution, class conflict, and debates on student councils from a bourgeois perspective, foregrounding them as the most important aspects of the “revolutionary novel for young girls”.

Different aspect of travel in Korean literature Korean travel literature both formely and today focuses on different aspects. They are not only travels as themselves, but also philosophical travels and travels which allow to find own way in life. The Middle Ages in Korea is a time of travels by monks and Confucian philosophers. Then, the Joseon period changes literature into even more philosophical travels at the beginning of the reign of dynasty. Different historical periods have substantial influent on the Korean literature. Japanese occupation, exiles Korean to China or Japan, lead writers towards travel journals. They spill tears on the paper, describe observations in a foreign country, regrettable on their fortune. The Korean war and division Korea on north and south formed some now kind of travel literature. In the literature appear a phenomenon of travels to the “other side of Korea” for finding family members. Divided nation cannot deal with longing for relatives in the “second Korea”. Then we come to a time of economic boom in South Korea, which staring hard at the West, opens to the world and started to become interested in other cultures. Again, in the Korean literature, especially for children and teenagers, appears travel aspect. This time they travel to other countries, describing remote places, customs and cultures. Today, Korea is a vibrant, high developed country with the latest technology. It makes people get lost and in the travel literature again appears philosophical motive and travels to self-awareness.
