The National Széchényi Library and Integra Co. will soon celebrate the 10th anniversary of their cooperation. The development of the BOOK-DREAM interlibrary loan administration system started in 1994. The system has proved highly efficient, as 80% of the interlibrary loan requests are currently sent via the web, and this is the most visited section of the National Library's website. One of the most important factors of the success is that the system developers have received continuous professional support from experts of ILL working at the National Library, the main user of the service.

2009 marks the 65th anniversary of the death of Kazimierz Piekarski (1893-1944), a distinguished Polish librarian, bibliographer, book historian and bibliologist, as well as the 90th anniversary of the publication of the first and the 70th anniversary of the publication of the last book by Piekarski (published during his lifetime). The present article is devoted to Piekarski's career - as a librarian in the Library of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (Polska Akademia Umiejetnosci - PAU), and the Jagiellonian Library in Kraków, the Ossolineum in Lviv and the National Library in Warsaw. The author recounts various stages of Piekarski's academic career, his published bibliological writings and his place in Polish science after World War II, a place the significance of which can be seen in the references in academic literature, in the re-issues of his publications and, first of all, in the continuation of the work he started.

Recently a new product, named HunTeka has been introduced into the Hungarian library software market. Firstly the authors analyse the circumstances that gave reasons for the development of a new system on the overstocked market. After the introduction, the elements of the program system are presented according to the main modules of the system. Particular emphasis is laid on certain functions that are becoming more and more important nowadays, like high level support of the networking interoperability, distributed cataloguing, wide range application of the XML standards, or the chances of developing virtually common catalogues. The adoption of the OAI protocol in HunTeka is also emphasised, since this is the technical basis on which common searching interfaces can be developed for the databases of libraries, museums and archives, or even for partner institutions and providers outside the public cultural sector. Finally the authors come to the conclusion that it was worth launching the development of HunTeka, which is confirmed by the growing number of the libraries introducing the new service.

The dramatic fate of the legendary Polish queen, Wanda, daughter of King Krak (Grakch), the ruler of Cracow, was reflected in iconography that includes portraits and historical scenes depicting the heroine's death and the recovery of her body from the Vistula river. The earliest images are the anonymous wood engravings in Maciej Miechowita's 'Chronica Polonorum' (1521) and in Marcin Bielski's 'Polish Chronicle' (1597) as well as two copperplates by Tomasz Treter ('Reges Poloniae' or the so-called Treter's Eagle, 1588, and another that is part of the 'Regum Poloniae Icones' series, published in 1591), copied by various European publishers (Arnold Mylius, 1594; Salomon Neugebauer, 1620). From 1852 comes a two-colour lithograph 'The Royal Castle and the shades of Krakus and Wanda' made in Lvov by Teofil Zychowicz and printed there at Marcin Jabłonski's factory. It was based on Michal Stachowicz's mural made between 1819 and 1821 at the Archbishops of Cracow Palace (destroyed by a fire in 1850). Between 1844 and 1946 in Paris a Lvov painter, Korneli Szlegel, painted an oil depicting Wanda's death and made two lithographs from it. In Warsaw, Aleksander Lesser painted 'The Death of Wanda' (1855), a painting that became a model for a tableau vivant presented on the stage of 'Teatr Wielki' in Warsaw in 1871, a wood engraving illustration of which (drawing by Lesser, engraving by Andrzej Zajkowski) was published by the Warsaw 'Klosy' in 1871. Probably the most popular among all those images was an oil painting by Maksymilian Antoni Piotrowski 'The Death of Wanda' (1859), copied by the author himself (with the copy now in the Museum of the Opole Silesia in Opole) an popularised by a two-colour lithograph printed at the Winckelmann & Sons press in Berlin under the imprint of Daniel Edward Friedlein from Cracow. This faithful though anonymous copy was subsequently included in Lucjan Siemienski's 'Album of Polish painters at the Exhibition of the Friends of Fine Arts Society in Cracow' (1860). The are no distinguished works among the graphic depictions of Wanda; similarly, there are no important Polish and foreign names among their authors (with the majority of works remaining anonymous).

LibInfo, the joint online reference service of Hungarian libraries, launched its new homepage in June 2003 (with financial support from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage), which introduced, along with graphical changes, a completely new version of operation built on the framework of the previous system. The new version comprises of two essential changes: primarily, a switch to an entirely web based operation, whereby the process of providing answers is conducted through the Internet, and secondly, a new system of database service, which enables LibInfo to contribute to Internet content through its on-line reference service, its catalogued link collection and its indexed archive of Internet web pages. The upgraded version also provides LibInfo the means to participate more and more in the digital document providing network. These features comply with the strategic plans of the National Széchényi Library, which acts as the moderator and co-ordinator of the service. Our article aims to introduce the new system of operation and to outline our plans for future development.

The construction of a thesaurus of kind of words/form class generates a number of special issues which are not covered by professional literature. In a thesaurus, kinds of words need to be classified into hierarchical structures. Generic hierarchies can only be established with the introduction of new general terms of kinds of words. The new terminology is also necessary for the setting up of a new ontology of kind of words/form class. This article deals with the special structure of kind of words, the main steps of its construction, its use and its potential for further development.

Social inequalities appear in various dimensions. Inequality in the access to the means of individual and mass communication constitutes a field that has not yet been fully explored by sociological research. This paper gives a historical overview of communications inequality in Hungary starting from 1847, the year of the establishment of the first telegraph station, till the new communication technologies of the present. Drawing on the results of researchers from Wilson to Keane and van Dijk, the study extends the notion of digital divide into a broader 'communication divide', showing how inequalities in access to the different means of communication may distort the elementary preconditions of the 'public sphere' (Offentlichkeit). Through secondary analysis of recent empirical research data, the author suggests that in Hungary there is a hard core of communication 'have-not' (with only 3 terrestrial TV channels and no Internet connection) which constitutes approximately one third of the population. While other strata have acquired more and more technologies and even gadgets, this one third of 'have-not' has not diminished over the last few years. One of the aims of the study is to suggest a communication policy approach where market mechanisms keep their proper place in introducing and spreading innovations, but social policy measures help to narrow the ever-recurring divide between the 'have' and the 'have-not'.

Over the past few decades, the Hungarian Patent Office (HPO) has gained extensive experiences in the field of patent search. The office staff - who have strong technical background - have obtained deep and up-to-date knowledge and expertise of applying various research procedures and carrying out patentability examination reports. In accordance with its responsibility of promoting intellectual property rights protection, but beyond the scope of its official tasks related to industrial property, the HPO offers various patent search services to business partners on a contractual basis. These services help business ventures as well as individuals find valuable information necessary to make patent-related decisions or in order to avoid patent-infringement risks and unnecessary costs. Through offering such services, HPO contributes to the objectives of the European Network of Patent Organisations. Since summer 2007, the range of services has included novelty search as well as novelty search with preliminary patentability report, preliminary patentability report, validity search and Freedom to Operate (FTO) search.

The author sets out a possible model of providing renewed, effective library services in small villages. Readers are presented the process through which, with the help of the county library, a new library and information service providing centre - also offering a venue for other community activities - is set up in a small village. The professional, cost-effective services are operated by the county library and are essentially based on the utilization of computers and the Internet. The village library becomes part of the integrated system of the county library and benefits from professional support and quality services. The service system is financially supported out of state funding provided for the so-called 'small districts', small administrative units based on the partnership of several villages for the purpose of joint development projects.

Visualisation is an important intellectual activity, similarly to information and data processing, abstraction, memory and learning. Visualisation is also a particularly important technique used in information retrieval. Although perception greatly depends on the individual user's knowledge and experience, the system of signs and symbols applied also plays a major role in designing information retrieval tools. Users find it easy to combine information and images. Pictures, graphics, toolbars, icons, buttons, diagrams provide support not only in understanding the structure and operation of the information retrieval language, but also in evaluating the results. Information retrieval systems providing the above tools greatly facilitate the access to information. The study also gives an overview of the possibilities of visually displaying the Universal Decimal Classification system in Hungarian online catalogues.

In this paper we consider an interaction between the reflection in the scientific activity and the scientific habitus. We claim that the ultimate goal of scientific activity consists in the desire to affect the scientific behavior of other scientists. As a rule, this means that scientific results are recognized more or less fundamental and depending on the fact that they determine scientific interests of the whole community of scientists. Accordingly, the scientific activity, which has entailed a serious discovery or invention, becomes a standard for the research behavior of the majority of members of scientific community. As a result, the given discovery or invention becomes the important part of scientific habitus (the embodied, interiorized social structure in scientific activity). The reflection in the scientific activity is a human ability that allows us to oppose the scientific habitus and not to subordinate the logical level of scientific argumentation to the dialectical level and the latter to the rhetorical level of scientific argumentation.

Through the use of the esp@cenet patent database, the paper demonstrates that, in many cases, the use of classification systems is a condition to good quality searching. Efficient search tools relieve the user of the in-depth familiarizing with the classification system, yet they carry out the search with the appropriate classification symbols. In the esp@cenet database, classification symbols are provided automatically, in the result lists of natural language keyword searches. These symbols are then exported into the advanced search interface with one click. Through the search examples, readers of the paper get acquainted with the tools of patent search, while they are also provided with further information on the European Patent Office's network of databases, the applied classification systems, as well as the services of the Patent Library of the Hungarian Patent Office.

The Internet has become the leading information delivery medium in our days, yet it represents a huge, heterogeneous and distributed network from the point of view of information retrieval. Numerous software systems have appeared in the past years to support the automated information retrieval processes, applying useful information and knowledge retrieval techniques. Nevertheless, the core services of these systems do not provide real knowledge representation methods. The aim of our research is to design and develop a complete information and knowledge management system that applies integrated state-of-the-art knowledge intensive techniques. The research is part of the IKF project at the Department of Measurement and Information Systems of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE) aims to analyze, design and implement a new intelligent knowledge-warehousing environment, allowing advanced knowledge management and decision support. The development is targeted towards specific financial application domain. This paper intends to provide a short review of knowledge-based information retrieval and extraction, and knowledge presentation technologies through the brief discussion of the project and the realized application. First, we present the architecture and the main features of the complete knowledge-based retrieval system. Then we focus on two major subjects: the document retrieval and information extraction system as well as the ontology-based knowledge management services. We also introduce some related topics briefly, such as structured information extraction with web wrappers, XML, and conceptualization with ontologies. Besides theory, we show some experimental results of the realized software systems.

The paper summarizes the outcomes of a survey recently carried out at the medical libraries of county hospitals. The survey investigated the changing needs of users in the field of information searching and library use. Due to the heavy work-related pressure and lack of time, health professionals show an increasing tendency of accessing professional literature from home, using electronic resources. However, the majority of users still use both print journals and online resources. One of the problems of using electronic resources is the inefficiency of searching, which is partly due to the insufficient searching skills of the users, but also to the shortcomings of the products and services themselves. User education remains the main task for librarians in order to optimize the use of expensive medical information sources. While the information infrastructure should be ensured and improved by the individual hospitals, the licensing of full-text medical journal databases should be coordinated and financed centrally, possibly by the Ministry of Health itself.
