The aim of the study is the inclusion in the ongoing debate among theoreticians and practitioners in the creative sector and the presentation of its state of development in Poland. Used for this data from the Local Data Bank for the period of 2015 years, and made a critical analysis of the literature. Differences were found not only in the definition and classification but the available data sources.

Drawing on a range of American, Australian, British and Scandinavian research into laughter, the current paper will use the form of pragmatic analysis typically found in qualitative research and apply it to data produced by the quantitative methodology common in the author’s own discipline of psychology. Laughter will be examined as an indexical that serves both a discourse deictic function, designating the utterance in which it occurs as non-serious, and a social deictic function, marking the laughing person’s preference for social proximity with fellow interlocutors. The paper will then analyse examples and data pertaining to three types of laughter bout derived from taking laughter as an indexical. First, solitary listener laughter will be argued to signify a deferential acknowledgement of continued solidarity with the speaker. Second, solitary speaker laughter will be suggested to mark a simple preference for solidarity. Third, joint laughter will be accepted as a signifier of actual solidarity that may also be used to mark status depending on which party typically initiates the joint laughter. Joint laughter thus acts in a manner closely analogous to the exchange of another set of indexicals, the T and V versions of second person pronouns in European languages. Finally, the paper will conclude by examining the problematic case of laughing at another interlocutor, before briefly considering the implications of this pragmatic perspective for traditional accounts of laughter as well as for future research.

In the ever changing socio-economic reality, reflexive parenting, oriented at gaining or maintaining certain family status, requires the taking of responsible educational decisions. It is interesting to explore how conscious parents are about the role of education in the process of a social system’s reproduction. Amongst middle class parents, a specific tendency to rational investment in the future of their children and careful strategic planning of educational biographies may be observed. The authors want to crystallize this phenomenon and shed new light on the subject of 'middle class children'. In the following discussion, the diverse examples of Poland and Saudi Arabia are used.

This study concerns celebrities approached in terms of a social category in Poland. The author attempts to establish to what extent celebrities represent a distinct stratum in the class hierarchy, if it is viable to call them a “social class,” and how much they can affect class distances in Polish society. The adopted line of argumentation suggests that celebrities have a relatively weak impact on Poland’s class structures. This is evidenced by such factors as high fluctuation, no institutionalized patterns of group entry and recruitment, as well as indefinable market value. Celebrities enjoy wide public recognition, create new lifestyles, and their opinions tend to be imitated. Nevertheless, due to wide social background and recruitment base, they constitute a highly heterogeneous social group, which prevents internal consolidation and locates them outside the class system.

The author presents the problematic issue of operating one’s status as a social category on the example of the mentally ill persons. The article indicated dualities, consisting of the simultaneous exclusion and g ratification that appear upon conferring the status of a disabled person to a mentally ill person. Social workers work in the area of these limits as well as being forced to establish criteria of status which authorize to receive social support. Balancing between social security provided by such status and privileges resulting f rom it, w hich at t he same t ime place restrains. Obtaining a g iven status is also associated with the stereotypification about the group to which solely t he decision about the disease places a given person. These barriers, as indicated by the author, are the result of operating with the status within the institution in which marginalization progresses together with being granted the status of a disabled person.

The author analyzes the glasses as a object of everyday use, which, because of its universality, disappear from our sight. This topic becomes a pretext to show the nature of the user-object relationship and features, functions, and the role that the glasses play. The analysis of the glasses is made in many aspects: from their history the impact on the world of fashion and film. Glasses are also analyzed as a tool of interpersonal communication and as status, pointing at e.g. media stereotypes and symbolic meanings.

In this article, I reinforce Albert K. Cohen’s theory with selected psychological theories. Cohen’s concept may seem outdated today, as it presents a twentieth-century social structure. A comparison between the theory of delinquent subcultures and psychological theories brings to light similarities and convergences between the theses put forward by Cohen and the remarks of more contemporary authors. These analogies make it possible to present the concept of delinquent subcultures in the form of a model that could be empirically verified in the future. The similarities I discuss include issues of self-esteem, status, aggression, and adjustment.

From childhood, the son of Sigismund the Old and Catherine Telniczanka, John of the Lithuanian Dukes (1499-1538), knew he was a prince, and so did his contemporaries. However, maintaining a princely estate does not come cheaply. The aim of this article is not to examine in detail the financial records of this princely cleric, for such documents no longer exist, nor shall we speak in general of the official income of the bishops of Vilnius; rather, we shall examine, where the meagre sources permit, how the bishop garnered income from property deals, the patronage of artisans, loans, and tax farming to fund his activities as a prince of the Church and a responsible secular lord. A broad account is given of John’s income and expenditure in childhood, his clerical career in the sees of Płock, Poznań and Vilnius, and his acquisition of property in Šiauliai and Volyn. Attention is also paid to the bishop’s use of the adoption law to his financial advantage. John was by no means a poor man but he was not as wealthy as he might appear – he promised to pay for building work in Poznań but left debts; he was expected to restore the city walls, but died prematurely. He pledged to present the Poznań cathedral treasury with a golden chalice but left only a debt of 300 złoty; the same goes for the ring he promised on his joyful ingress into his new see. He was economically astute – he built the first glass foundry in Vilnius on condition it provide him with window glass and tableware. He purchased houses and rented them out for long term occupation – the rent of at least three generations of Kirchel burghers in Vilnius funded his mansionary chapel in Vilnius cathedral. He gives the impression of never having enough ready cash at hand, despite obtaining large swathes of financially profitable grand-ducal territory which produced the considerable income he needed to spend on administration.

Language policy in the Republic of Macedonia – between legislation and practice The question about the status of the Macedonian language manifests itself for the first time in the 19th century, but its resolution starts with the codification of the Macedonian language after World War II. The Macedonian language is then declared as an official language in the Macedonian republic and equal amongst the other languages in SFR Yugoslavia. However, the official language in SFR Yugoslavia (the language of international communication, military dealings, one of the core subjects in all elementary schools etc.) was the Serbo‑Croatian language. With the formation of an independent Republic of Macedonia, the Macedonian language became the only official language until the peace deal Ohrid Framework Agreement was signed, when the language of the largest ethnic minority – the Albanian language – gains the status of an official language. The issue of interest of this article is whether the Macedonian language has changed its status and to what extent, what are the terms of legislation for it and the real situation in which it is found in the Republic of Macedonia.

Basic linguistic ontology and plants: A semantic sketchThis article is devoted to verbs collocating with the Polish lexeme roślina ‘plant’. The aim of the study is to determine the linguistic status of the plant and to investigate whether it is ‘someone’ or ‘something’ in view of the semantics of the verbs in question. The author analyses cases in which the plant appears in the semantic role of the agent. She makes conclusions about how the lexeme roślina functions in Polish and defines its unique features (semantic connectivity) and semantic roles. The study is based on language surveys conducted among native speakers of Polish. Language analysis reveals the place of the plant in the hierarchy of living organisms.

The aim of this paper was to reduce confusion around the concepts of dialect and language. Although linguists often use separate terms, there are no linguistic criteria to make a distinction between the two. It is also difficult to delineate the boundaries of specific languages or dialects. Classification attempts may lead to developing linguistic hierarchy, therefore it is necessary to know that any distinction is artificial and arbitrary. In view of no clear definitions of dialect and language, the use of a neutral term “variety” is preferred. Human perception of linguistic reality – diverse varieties and their mutual relations – is the outcome of subjective, political decisions and organised social activity. Distinction between a dialect and a language is volatile – e.g. colloquial Latin had evolved into dialects that, over time, transformed into the Romance languages. The evolution of the Castilian language on the Iberian Peninsula shows how social and political factors, rather than linguistic ones, influence the actual status of a linguistic variety.

Foreign language learning anxiety has been the target of many studies in the field of applied linguistics, but, with the dynamics turn in the field, attempts have been recently made to uncover the dynamics of anxiety English as a foreign language (EFL) learners go through, especially within the moments of their conversational interactions. Within these interactions, dynamics of anxiety might emerge in different patterns under the influence of the status of the participants’ interlocutors and their familiarity with them. This study explores the dynamics of EFL learners’ anxiety while interacting with different interlocutors from an idiodynamic perspective. The participants of this case study were two female freshman students, taking a speaking and listening university course, who were interviewed by four interlocutors with different status and level of familiarity. Following an idiodynamic method, they self-rated their anxiety fluctuations under the influence of each interlocutor throughout each conversation followed by stimulated recall interviews regarding the explanations of the changes in their anxiety during the conversations. The results showed both change and stability in the participants’ anxiety under the influence of the interlocutors’ familiarity with the participants and their status as well their verbal and nonverbal feedback. The explanation of these changes based on the main properties of complex dynamic system theory is discussed.

Two studies investigated the process of emotion regulation in powerless groups. We predicted that members of powerless groups would reduce negative emotions when they perceived status differences as illegitimate and ascribed stereotypes to the outgroup. In Study 1 the opportunity to attribute outgroup stereotypes after reading about an illegitimate power distribution reduced negative emotions. By contrast, in socially legitimized powerless conditions participants maintained negative emotions over time, and supported more negative action tendencies towards the outgroup after expressing outgroup stereotypes. In Study 2 we increased the threat imposed by a powerful outgroup and found fear reduction in the illegitimate and maintenance of fear in the legitimate conditions. Additionally, the effect of legitimacy on group efficacy was mediated by threat appraisals. The impact of perceived legitimacy of asymmetric power relations and the salience of outgroup stereotypes on emotional and behavioral reactions to powerlessness is discussed.

In my research, the Udmurt people occupy a central place. Today they are central also in my everyday life as I have paid visits to them already for 30 years because I felt that it was not enough to study only written sources and history. To understand people, their culture and mindset, you have to go to them, to see them in their everyday environment. In this article I would like to share what I have experienced when visiting them, and what I have learnt from them.

This paper discusses the status of Kazakh in Shymkent in recent years. Shymkent is the third-largest city in Kazakhstan, with a population of over one million. Like in all large cities in this country, most of the Kazakh population in Shymkent is Kazakh-Russian bilingual, while the Russians are monolingual Russian speakers. The strength of Kazakh in Shymkent depends on many factors, such as the type of district, sociolinguistic features, and it is different in the spoken and the written form. Although Kazakh in Shymkent is the object of frequent comments in Kazakhstan, it has not yet been studied. The research material is based on fieldwork, analysis of the local media and websites. It may be argued that despite the local conditions and assets, the position of Kazakhs in public domains depends on the state’s language policy and the degree of integration with Russia.

Various effective models of parliamentary opposition have been implemented in European countries. Depending on the form of state government and political system, they differ in the degree of institutionalization of the parliamentary opposition, its role in lawmaking, and the ways it controls activities of the majority and the government. The development of the institution of parliamentary opposition based on the positive experience of European countries is an important condition for the evolution of parliamentary democracy in Ukraine within the framework of its European integration. This requires a synthesis of the advantages of different models of parliamentary opposition with due regard to the current realities, namely, the form of the government and political system of Ukraine as an Eastern European, post-Soviet country. The main principles of development of the institution of parliamentary opposition shall be as follows: to distinguish the status of majority and opposition, to ensure a balance of their rights and obligations, and to take into consideration the interests of the minority when exercising of power by the parliamentary majority. Besides, the legislative recognition of the parliamentary opposition in Ukraine shall contribute to its institutionalization, recognition of role of the parliamentary opposition as a political actor, as well as normalization of relations with the parliamentary coalition.

After the dialogical self, what?

The idea of the dialogical self is a large step forward in linking the self to the social environment which forms it and provides its content. However, using an empirically-based, widely-known model of social relations, I propose that the concept of the self may be an extraneous item in the toolbox of dialogical-self theorists and practitioners. Rather, since the self is created by the social milieu, it may make sense to work with that milieu directly rather than with its product. This proposal has particular import for psychotherapy and I address some specifics of this claim to therapists.

Sociologists traditionally focus on the power of socio-economic variables as drivers of aesthetic tastes and cultural practices, leaving other important factors outside the purview of analysis. As a remedy, this article makes use of recent progress at the intersection of the sociology of culture and network theory to show that individual interest in and preferences for art are also embedded in social relationships of a different kind. Data from a specially designed survey on personal networks and cultural tastes in Polish society is analyzed. Cultural taste is measured in detail by presenting respondents with ten color illustrations depicting different styles of visual art. These ten evaluations are then reduced to two significant dimensions (traditional vs. more modern art). The regressions analyses show distinct relations of network characteristics (such as heterogeneity, type of contacts, density, or associational membership) with the type of art preferred. The findings are interpreted in terms of social influence and affinity between cultural orientations (e.g., openness) and the manners in which social ties are developed and maintained. Additionally, the article sheds light on distinction patterns by arguing that status is claimed through specific (modern) preferences.
