The author of the study criticises the unusual length of the document, and therefore tries to present it in short to those interested. The fundamental shortcomings of the text are in methodology: both, the goal and concept of anthropology, are not defined; important documents of the International Theological Commission dealing with anthropology are not mentioned; for some passages, it was obligatory to recall the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church. Methodological vagueness is the reason for the endless description of the biblical content. However, in particular parts of the document, there is a great deal of interesting information and suggestions to which the author draws attention to in the last part of his study.
Richard Špaček (1864–1925) is primarily known as Professor of dogmatic theology and Dean of Sts Cyril and Methodius Faculty of Theology in Olomouc. It is, however, less known that he began his academic career as a New Testament scholar. This article analyses his paper “The Fourth Gospel in Protestant Scholarship”, published in the periodical Journal of the Catholic Clergy (Časopis katolického duchovenstva) in 1909. I claim that Špaček composed this text, which is a compilation of several German sources, with two intentions. First, he aimed at providing the Czech Catholic clergy with an answer to the translation of Harnack’s History of Dogma. Second, he struggled to provide a solution to historical‑critical questions, which would be in accord with the recent decision of the Pontifical Biblical Commission.
Considerable public attention has been given to the treatment of homosexuality in the recent document of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, What Is Man? A Journey through Biblical Anthropology. Some reports have claimed that the document represents a shift in Catholic teaching toward the acceptance of homosexual acts. This article assesses that claim by carefully examining the relevant sections of the document in the perspective of its wider reflections on biblical anthropology and on the biblical vision of the institution of marriage. While the document situates the biblical texts concerning homosexuality within their literary and cultural contexts and emphasises the pastoral sensitivity with which this topic must be approached, it does not promote a revision or reversal of the Church’s teaching on sexual morality.
W artykule autor podejmuje temat przemocy w Biblii w interpretacji Papieskiej Komisji Biblijnej w dokumencie Natchnienie i prawda Pisma Świętego.

The article is entitled ‘Violence in the Bible in the interpretation of the Pontifical Biblical Commission in the document “Inspiration and Truth of Scripture” ’. The biblical texts speak of legal violence, the law of herem, and imprecatory psalms from a Christian perspective are very difficult to interpret. The Pontifical Biblical Commission indicates the hermeneutical principles necessary for their proper understanding. The article discusses the nature and importance of the Commission's guidelines in the context of a theological discussion. Its scheme is as follows. The first point is the general characteristic of the document “Inspiration and Truth of Scripture” on the background of the earlier official statements of the Church. Special attention is paid to the Post-Synodal Exhortation of Benedict XVI, Verbum Domini (2010). The next point includes examples of interpretations of selected biblical texts. In the interpretation of biblical texts associated with legal violence the complementary nature of Law is shown. It also points out problems in the interpretation of the law “herem”. The ferocity of “herem” seems to be in contrast with the biblical image of God. Prayers for violence contained in some psalms (imprecatory psalms) cast a shadow on theological beauty of the psalter. To properly interpret these texts attention should be paid to: the situation of a person suffering; the true intentions of the psalmist, and who are his enemies. In the interpretation of the Christian, enemies can refer to negatives spiritual realities. The Pontifical Biblical Commission is opposed to the practice of removing difficult biblical texts from the Lectionary and omitting them in homily. The Commission encourages the patient interpretation of difficult texts of the Bible because they are also the inspired word of God.
The early „Responses” of the Pontifical Biblical Commission ranked as doctrinal statements and their purpose was to delineate the boundaries of Catholic orthodoxy in Biblical studies. The decrees have never lost their formal status even though they have been nearly universally abandoned by theologians. In 1955 an anonymous article was published whose goal was to diminish the authority of the “Responses” and present them as outdated. However, there was no ecclesiastical authority of any sort behind the article. Today we need to see the documents as the testimony of the ever-actual Church Magisterium according to the principle of hermeneutics of continuity promoted by Pope Benedict XVI.

The actualization of the Holy Scripture is a necessary task nowadays. On the one hand, we have the Biblical texts conditioned by the times in which they were formed; on the other, we have the the modern reader, also conditioned by his or her times, wanting to live the Word of God. The fourth section of the Pontifical Biblical Commission’s 1994 The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church takes up this issue. The aim of this article is to analyze the statements of the document on actualization and to present the process as a new, special and hitherto insufficiently explored way to reference the message of the Bible to the life of believers today.

Dokument Papieskiej Komisji Biblijnej Interpretacja Biblii w Kościele z 1993 roku w swej czwartej części podejmuje to zagadnienie. Celem artykułu było przeanalizowanie wypowiedzi dokumentu na temat aktualizacji i przedstawienie jej jako nowego, szczególnego i wciąż nie dość zgłębionego sposobu odniesienia przesłania Biblii do życia współczesnych wierzących.
Almost 25 years ago, the Pontifical Biblical Commission issued the document “The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church”. It dealt with various at that time current hermeneutical and exegetical questions, especially on the scientific level. However, the pastoral ministry side of this matter was not excluded. The pastors - as the document states - should also bring the Scriptures for the faithful in a comprehensible way (Chap. IV, Art. C, No. 3). But how to do it practically? The document does not expand this thread. This article is a small contribution to the topic. In it, the main hermeneutical prin- ciples of the Catholic Church for reading the Bible in the language of infants (Mt 11,25) are presented.

Ponad 25 lat temu Papieska Komisja Biblijna wydaa dokument pod tytuem „Interpretacja Pisma witego w Kociele”. Zosta on powicony ówczesnym naukowym kwestiom hermeneutyczno- egzegetycznym. Duszpasterze powinni take w dostpny sposób przyblia Pismo wite wszystkim wiernym (rozdz. IV, art. C, nr 3). Ale jak to zrealizowa praktycznie? Dokument nie rozwija szczegóowo tego tematu. Niniejszy artyku podejmuje dane wezwanie, przedstawiajc gówne hermeneutyczno- -biblijne zasady Kocioa Katolickiego „jzykiem prostaczków” (Mt 11,25).
The new document of the Pontifical Biblical Commission „The Inspiration and Truth of Sacred Scripture” elaborates on the truth in the Bible, also in the context of historical problems that emerge form biblical text. The consensus of modern historians and archaeologists is moving towards separating biblical history and history as a science. In this article I present contemporary discussion on this issue, then I ask, how the document of Pontifical Biblical Commission treats this issue. At the end I suggest directions for further work of biblical scholars.

Nowy dokument Papieskiej Komisji Biblijnej pt. Na końcu proponuję kierunki dalszych prac, by owocny dialog biblistów i historyków pomagał coraz lepiej zrozumieć istotę i sens słowa Bożego jaśniejącego w Piśmie Świętym.

Nowadays, Catholic exegetes interpret the Bible using a variety of methods and approaches. The most important of these are mentioned in the document entitled The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church. More than 25 years have passed since this act was published. This article wants to commemorate this event. It proposes an approach to the Bible through fables. The application of the proposed approach undoubtedly enriches the interpretation of the Scriptures. This thesis is demonstrated by the application of two fables motifs: fish and laughter. In fables, fish and laughter quite often mark the beginning of a new stage in the life of a certain protagonist or even become the causative agent of pregnancy, i.e. a new life. Paying attention to these ideas enables a better understanding of those biblical texts that also contain themes of fish and laughter.
Violence in the Bible became a sore point in our times. There are thousands of killed enemies of Jews in the ninth chapter of the book of Esther. Was Esther really a bloodthirsty queen? Are Jews really a violent nation? Civil war depicted in the book of Esther is historically not verifiable in the persian kingdom. Referred violence functions as a „counter-history“ (J. Assmann). The past is discribed from the point of view of the beatened and oppressed in the manner that the oppressors appear as pitiful persons and the winners as beatened. The biblical text does not celebrate the violence, it wants to prevent such events as annihilation of the whole nation.

The article is focused on the document published in 2014 by the Pontifical Biblical Commission and called: The Inspiration and Truth of Sacred Scripture. The Word that comes from God and speaks of God for the salvation of the world. The purpose of publishing was to reach the priests, the people studying the Bible as well as the laity. By the discovering the biblical truth everybody can understand better oneself, the creation and God. Everybody can concisely grow in one’s faith. According to the document, the Divine inspiration is revealed to us when we read the Holy Scriptures. On the pages of Bible we can meet God himself. The message shared with us in the Bible explains the truth about God, about a man, our salvation and about a world. Even though it has some elements of the science or history, it is not a source of the science knowledge or chronicle of the historic facts. Besides we always have to include the genre and style of the ancient authors. This document can have amazing impact on the pastoral work, helping people to get interested in the Bible and to find the answers for many questions they have about it.

Artykuł traktuje o zakorzenieniu konstytucji o Bożym Objawieniu Soboru Watykańskiego II we współczesnym naukowym i eklezjologicznym podejściu do Pisma Świętego. Biblia bowiem wyrasta z wiary Kościoła i tę wiarę, wraz z Tradycją, buduje. Wspólnota wiary Kościoła stanowi naturalne środowisko badań, lektury i życia Słowem Bożym, do czego zachęca w swoim zakończeniu Konstytucja Dei Verbum (nr 25).

The article discusses the issue of how strongly contemporary ecclesiological and scholarly approach to the Sacred Scripture is rooted in the Second Vatican Council Constitution Dei Verbum. The Bible originates from the faith of the Church, and, together with Tradition, helps to build this faith. The text consists of three sections. The first one focuses on God, who reveals Himself and His plan of salvation to man. Then, the ways in which God communicates with man through human authors and the long process of writing the inspired sacred books are mentioned. The last part emphasises how important it is for man to respond to the Word of God, which will enable the salvific dialogue of man with his Father, through His Son in the Holy Spirit. The community of Church faith is a natural environment of research, devotional reading and encounters with the Word of God, which are the elements of Christian life that the Constitution Dei Verbum (no. 25) encourages to implement.
