This paper investigates the phenomenon of intensification from the point of view of semantics. Specifically, such intensifiers, which by their meaning specify the degree of the property, at the same time exhibit other semantic features. In communication, they can express, for example, what kind of feelings a given utterance evokes in the speaker. The analysis of intensifiers and their collocates is performed on Finnish material. Two groups of intensifiers are compared with the finding that the semantic features of the intensifiers themselves affect their collocability; but apparently synonymous intensifiers also have different semantic preferences.

The study deals with the second life of personal names in Jaroslav Hašek’s novel Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka za světové války [The Good Soldier Švejk And His Fortunes in the World War]. Considering the distinct character types and their denotative potential, it focuses on the following topics: 1) appellativized forms of the characters’ proper names and their word-formation characteristics (e.g., the type švejk – švejkovat, švejkovina, švejkovský, etc.); 2) the use of characters’ proper names in contemporary opinion journalism as metaphorical and metonymic designations, as well as in quotations (e.g., “Tak nám prodali krematorium, paní Müllerová.” [“Well, so they sold the crematorium on us, Mrs. Müller.”]). The analysis is based on the opinion journalism corpus of the Czech National Corpus SYN, version 11.

The goal of the study is to seek for mechanisms that determine creation of female forms of foreign surnames in Czech in the material from the Czech National Corpus SYN, version 9. To this end, we investigate the corpus frequencies of the names of European female presidents and prime ministers who were active in the 2010–2019 timespan, and of the names of actresses who received the Academy Award for Best Actress (the Oscar) in the same period. On the grounds of statistical testing, the paper finds out if profession, age, or declension of the first name play a role in whether surname feminization takes place. Besides the results, the research hints at the fact that there are many factors at play, for example, name length, spelling difficulties, or the mechanism of “syntactic attraction”.

After briefly discussing the heterogeneities inherent to language production and how they influence corpus evidence, we describe a scale for the classification of individual morphological variants by their relative frequencies that has recently been independently proposed in Mluvnice současné češtiny (2010) (A Grammar of Contemporary Czech, hereafter GCCz), of which we are co-authors, and in Bermel & Knittl (2012). Those variants with relative frequency (roughly) within 1% and 10% are classified by the respective authors as “sparse” and “marked”, and those occurring in (roughly) less than 1% cases as “unexpected” and “isolated”. Another feature of the scale is the “equipollence” of variants of a doublet having relative frequencies within (roughly) 1/3 and 2/3 (for this criterion see also Štícha 2009). The scale in GCCz is heuristically based on Shannon entropy and valid for synchronic functionally equivalent variants. Recently, R. Čech (2012) has claimed to have revealed “a serious statistical deficiency” in GCCz. We show that this is a misunderstanding stemming from his not distinguishing between the null-hypothesis statistical significance testing and the effect size evaluation. We end with a brief note on the structure of the resources employed in GCCz.

The study focuses on folk linguistics used in stenographic records from the sessions of the Poslanecká sněmovna [Chamber of Deputies] of the Parliament of the Czech Republic during the period 1993–2025. Through a qualitative-collocational analysis of written records, it explores how deputies, as non-linguists, conceptualize language, particularly proper names (mostly personal names), and how they present and comment on certain topics related to language and proper names in their discussions. First, a quantitative analysis using the ParlCorp corpus (a part of the Czech National Corpus) was conducted. Its aim was to gain initial information about the frequency of selected expressions in the corpus. This was followed by a collocational analysis focused on collocates associated with the examined expressions. The quantitative analysis was complemented by a qualitative functional-semantic analysis. In this analysis, the stenographic records were examined to determine which topics related to language in general, the Czech language, and proper names are discussed in the Chamber of Deputies, and whether the political affiliation of individual speakers is reflected in their approach to these topics.

The study presents a corpus analysis of contemporary Czech journalism (using the SYN corpus, version 12, a part of the Czech National Corpus), with a particular emphasis on a selected group of choronyms, specifically, the names of regions that are related to adjectives derived from settlement place names. These include pairs of variant region namings, such as Bojkovicko – Bojkovsko (from the place name Bojkovice, adjective forms bojkovický – bojkovský), where one variant is considered a standard version and the other a non-standard one (dialectal or regional). The aim of the study is to examine how these forms behave in text, whether they differ in terms of frequency, representation in various types of journalism, and semantics (content and scope of reference to the object). The research employs methods of quantitative linguistics, including frequency and collocation analysis, combined with interdisciplinary approaches to the cartographic presentation of linguistic data. This study highlights the potential of onomastics for researching the symbolic aspects of regions.
