The article offers a reflection on the changes of early-romantic historical narration in Poland, which the author discusses as based on Joachim Lelewel’s and Adam Mickiewicz’s texts. The main subject of interest in the paper is "Historyczna paralela Hiszpanii z Polską" (A Historical Parallel of Spain and Poland) (written in 1820, published in 1831 and continued in the 1830s) and historicism based on parallelism and synchrony. It finds its expression not only in a comparative thinking about history but also in a narrative and graphic “parallelizing” (J. Lelewel). A similarly comparative type of historism is found both in the then scientific and popular historical writing and in literature which, in Mickiewicz’s writing rests on a figural presentation of history and Messianism. The success of the parallel at the beginning of 19th c. is by the author linked with a search for a narrative form for a new perception of history conceived as an all-pervasive, multilevel and progressive process, which hardly undergoes a simple diachronic order.
The subject of this study is comparisons extracted from Joachim Lelewel’s Polish‑language émigré epistolary prose addressed to acquaintances and friends. A formal and semantic characterisation of the comparisons has been carried out, and their textual extensiveness has been identified and compared with comparisons occurring in the historiographer’s scientific subidiolect. On the basis of the formal analysis, it was established: 1) the type of comparatives in terms of their degree of fixation, 2) the manner of linking between comparandum and comparatum, 3) the array of the two members, and 4) the degree of extensionality. The semantics of the comparatives, on the other hand, made it possible to approximate the specifics of the historian’s colloquial thinking.
The object of observation is the lexis referring to the phenomena of speech and speaking, which appears in the correspondence that the scholar-politician conducted in exile in 1831-1860 in France (among others, Paris, La Grange, Tours) and Belgium (Brussels). It constitutes a rich collection of 1496 letters written in Polish (1423), French (65) and German (8), which were collected and published in five volumes by Helena Więckowska. The purpose of the study is 1) to indicate the vocabulary repertoire related to speaking in Lelewel’s colloquial subidiolect, 2) to organise excerpts within the lexical-semantic field related to the process of speech and the speaking situation, 3) to determine which words may be Lelewel’s individuals. The lexicographical analysis refers to sources covering the vocabulary of the New Polish era. The vocabulary with the component ‘to communicate orally’ comprises 226 lexical units.

Paryżu, La Grange, Tours) i Belgii (Brukseli). Stanowi ona bogaty zbiór 1496 listów pisanych w języku polskim (1423), francuskim (65) i niemieckim (8), które zebrała i wydała w pięciu tomach Helena Więckowska. Wyekscerpowane z listów emigracyjnych Joachima Lelewela pisanych do przyjaciół i znajomych słownictwo z komponentem ‘komunikować ustnie’ liczy 226 jednostek leksykalnych.
This source edition includes correspondence between Maria Korzeniowska and historians (J. Lelewel, I. Ż. Onacewicz) concerning the preparation of a historical atlas of Poland following the model of Leseage. The letters reveal the enthusiasm with which Regina approached the study of Polish history, but also the challenging relations between specialists and amateurs, who did not always comprehend the purpose of the historian’s workshop, which was still in its early stages of development. The correspondence also bears witness to the one of the firsts woman’s attempt to enter the world of academic humanities in our country.
CEL NAUKOWY: celem artykułu jest analiza archetypu polskiej kultury politycznej w ujęciu Stanisława Ignacego Witkiewicza. PROBLEM I METODY BADAWCZE: dyskusja nad istotą polskiej kultury politycznej osiągnęła swój kulminacyjny moment w sporze pomiędzy koncepcją Joachima Lelewela z jednej strony i tak zwaną krakowską szkołą historyczną (J. Szujski, S. Tarnowski, S. Koźmian, M. Bobrzyński) z drugiej.
This article is dedicated to linguistic interests of Joachim Lelewel, predominantly to his deliberations on the etymology andmeaning of such names as: Czech, Lech, Wanda, the Geats, Germanic peoples, Lechites, Germans, the Slovaks, the Vandals. Attention was also paid to scholarly references to other texts of strictly linguistic nature and commentaries demonstrating extensive knowledge of linguistics with regard to pseudo-etymological assertions of priest Dębołecki, a seventeenth century preacher.
The author of the article analyses Zygmunt Krasiński’s views concerning romantic idea of the North. Additionally, he examines the poet’s polemics with Joachim Lelewel. The final conclusion demonstartes that Krasiński developed his own vision of the North, and that it contradicts the generally accepted utopian image which dominated the early stage of Polish romanticism.
The text is devoted to material objects as they appear in selected works of two notable authors of Polish Romanticism – Adam Mickiewicz and Joachim Lelewel. Inspired by post-humanist thought, the article reviews the ambiguous currents where Romanticism intersects with modern age and ‘the century of lights’. On the one hand, both authors express their fascination with experimental thinking of the Enlightenment and the continuity of anthropocentrism. On the other, however, they notice the burden of emancipation of man, which results in his alienation from non-human realm, both contemporary and material.
Artykuł, będący fragmentem przygotowywanej większej rozprawy, skupia się na operacjach – raczej symbolicznych aniżeli pojęciowych – jakie Mickiewiczowi w pierwszym kursie Literatury słowiańskiej służą do konstruowania obrazu przedchrześcijańskiej kultury duchowej Słowian wedle pożądanego, apriorycznego wzorca. Zjawisko to, rozpatrywane w kontekście wykraczającego poza romantyzm procesu kulturowego, znajduje analogię w humanistycznym koncepcie mitologicznej monogenezy, wyczerpująco opracowanym przez Macieja Kazimierza Sarbiewskiego w traktacie Dii gentium. Mickiewicz dowodzi pierwotnego monoteizmu Słowian w trybie podobnym do tego, jaki w tradycji humanistycznego mitoznawstwa służył dowodzeniu pierwotnego monoteizmu Greków i Rzymian.

The article, which is a fragment of a larger dissertation under preparation, focuses on the operations – symbolic rather than conceptual – which Mickiewicz uses in the first course of Literatura słowiańska [Slavonic Literature] to construct an image of the pre-Christian spiritual culture of Slavs according to a desired, a priori model. This phenomenon, considered in the context of a cultural process going beyond Romanticism, finds analogy in the humanistic concept of mythological monogenesis, thoroughly developed by Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski in the treatise Dii gentium. Mickiewicz proves the original monotheism of the Slavs in a manner similar to the one used in the tradition of humanistic mythology to prove the original monotheism of the Greeks and Romans. This convergence is not motivated by direct filiation, but rather by a common conceptual and symbolic apparatus of the apologetic tradition, whose characteristic feature is the camouflage of aporias generated by the concept of primordial theology. Due to the ongoing misunderstanding that Mickiewicz’s position on this issue is basically the same as that of Joachim Lelewel, upon analysing the assumptions of the arguments of both authors, the article shows that the concept of original Slavic monotheism, which is close to both of them, in both cases results from different, contradictory premises and performs different functions.

The paper is devoted to the birth of the Philomath myth, namely the shaping of cultural memory about imprisonment, investigation and following it deportation from Lithuania to exile into Russia of a group of Vilnius interns, students and professors in 1823 and 1824. The author of the paper focuses on announcing and first accounts of so-called Philomath and Filaret trial, the associations to which, traditionally, an anonymous brochure published during the Polish November Insurrection “Nowosilcow w Wilnie w roku szkolnym 1823/24” (“Novosilcov in Vilnius in the Schoolyear 1823/24”, 1831) by, as was later proven, Joachim Lelewel, and Adam Mickiewicz’s “Dziady” (“Forefathers’ Eve”) part III (1832) belonged. As based on those autobiographical accounts, and also on the regained manuscript of “Nowosilcow w Wilnie”, the author formulates a thesis about the existence of pre-Mickiewicz, nameless, collective memory about the Philomaths strengthened, and also substantially changed by the issuing of “Dziady” part III.
The aim of this article is to show the role of Józef Muczkowski in the publication of the works of Adam Mickiewicz. It presents the historical background of the nineteenth-century Grand Duchy of Poznań, the publications that came out at that time, as well as Muczkowski’s contacts with Edward Raczyński and Adam Tytus Działyński. It also describes the circumstances of the edition of Adam Mickiewicz’s poetry prepared by Józef Muczkowski. The manuscripts of the letters exchanged between Muczkowski and Joachim Lelewel in the years 1827–1830 regarding the publication of the works of Adam Mickiewicz – kept in the Jagiellonian Library in Cracow under shelfmarks 4435 (pages 688–703) and 4175 (pages 114–132) – have been prepared for print. This group of manuscripts contains nine letters written by Józef Muczkowski himself and eleven written by Joachim Lelewel.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie udziału Józefa Muczkowskiego w wydaniu dzieł Adama Mickiewicza. Przedstawiono tło historyczne XIX-wiecznego Wielkiego Księstwa Poznańskiego, publikowanych wówczas wydawnictw, kontaktów Józefa Muczkowskiego z Edwardem Raczyńskim oraz Adamem Tytusem Działyńskim. Opisano okoliczności edycji poezji Adama Mickiewicza przez Józefa Muczkowskiego. Korespondencję Józefa Muczkowskiego z Joachimem Lelewelem z lat 1827–1830 w sprawie wydania dzieł Adama Mickiewicza przechowywaną w Bibliotece Jagiellońskiej w Krakowie oraz zebraną w rękopisach o sygnaturach 4435 (k. 688–703) oraz 4175 (k. 114–132) przygotowano do druku. Wśród wymienionych rękopisów znajduje się dziewięć listów pisanych ręką Józefa Muczkowskiego oraz jedenaście ręką Joachima Lelewela.
The topic of the article is the way of presenting relations with Poles in The Confession by the famous 19-th century revolutionist and anarchist M. Bakunin (as we know, the work originated as a «political confession» addressed to Nicholas I). At the beginning, the descriptions of the Polish emigrants (especially Lelewel, Czartoryski, Biernacki, Mickiewicz) are quite general, but sincere. However, when describing current revolutionary events Bakunin starts to put emphasis on stereotypical — negative — ideas about Poles, which aims at showing the lack of possibility of a Polish-Russian cooperation on a political level. The deliberate choice of such a strategy allowed the author of The Confession to conduct a kind of game with Nicholas I.

Ta świadomie wybrana strategia pozwoliła autorowi Spowiedzi prowadzić swoistą grę z Mikołajem I.
When examining Polish political thought, one cannot help but notice that what engages Polish thinkers in reflection on the state and society is the problem of freedom. This is a characteristic feature of Polish political thought and is responsible for the special nature of the heritage of Polish political culture. In the secondary literature, the idea even appears that – historically – the fate of Poland and Polish people in the cultural, intellectual, and political spheres can be understood as, on the one hand, a reflection on the “republican paradigm” characteristic of Polish culture, and on the other, as this paradigm’s impact (positive or negative) on the history of Polandand Poles. The goal of this article is to attempt to explain the idea of republicanism in the socio-political thought of Joachim Lelewel. In the article, we propose the thesis that if – according to assumptions accepted by scholars – the archetype of every nation is, by definition, unchanging and untranslatable into any other archetype, and Lelewel defines it as republican, then in his view: firstly, Polish republicanism is distinct from European republicanism; and secondly, political life in Poland can only be organized within the bounds of the “republican paradigm.” The success of Poland depends upon whether the value of this paradigm will be recognized. However paradoxical it may sound, the requirement for “strong rule” in Poland consists in taking into account the “republican soul” of Poles. We also point to the issue – raised by Lelewel – of the fundamental “distinctness” of the archetype of Polish political culture (which is subsumed within the “republican paradigm”) from the archetype of European culture.

Jest on wyróżnikiem polskiej myśli politycznej i stanowi o szczególnym charakterze dorobku polskiej kultury politycznej.

Joachim Lelewel, a historian educated at the University of Vilnius, was one of the most significant representatives of the critical approach to historical sources in Polish historiography. August Ludwig Schlözer, a linguist, gained renown above all for his critical edition of the ‘Nestor Chronicle’, the final volume of which appeared just as Lelewel was beginning his academic career. This article examines how, and to what extent, Lelewel’s intellectual work in the critical analysis of historical sources was influenced by Schlözer’s methods. Through a close reading of Lelewel’s writings, it will be shown how he adopted categories developed by Schlözer, at times even employing them against Schlözer himself. Lelewel’s engagement with Schlözer not only reflects the wider Enlightenment debates on historical method, but also complicates simplified models of knowledge transfer between scholars from Western and Central-Eastern Europe.
This article examines the problems facing a comparative study of the reception of the idea of revolution in some selected writings of G.W.F. Hegel and Joachim Lelewel. Paying due attention to the specificity of the philosophical and historical approach, the article analyses the similarities and differences in Hegel's and Lelewel's appraisals of the revolutionary legacy. It also brings to light a misrepresentation of Lelewel's take on the subject in the German translation of his writings. That said, Hegel's thought remains of vital importance for both Lelewel, who is not convinced by it, and his translator H.J. Handschuch, who eagerly embraces it.
