The aim of this article is to examine how family policies contribute to changes in family practices and towards gender equality in families. Empirically we draw on interviews with two groups of Polish-born parents: Polish parents who have migrated to Norway and Polish parents living in Poland. Norway and Poland are relevant cases for our exploration because they represent different types of welfare states, which have followed different paths towards their current family policy package. In our analysis of actual work–family adaptations we found a convergence towards gender-equal dual-earner/dual-carer arrangements in both groups, although there were differences in the level of agency. Polish parents in Poland felt less entitled to use the measures available to them, and sometimes refrained from using them, compared to Polish parents in Norway who expressed a strong sense of agency in using family policy measures to create a good life in Norway and as part of a project of change towards more gender-equal sharing of work and care responsibilities. The analysis confirms the strong link between family practices and family policies, but also illustrates how the effect of policies on practices may be hampered or boosted by the wider historical-cultural context of the society in question. In conclusion, in analyses of the link between policy and practice it may be fruitful to distinguish between family policy packages – the concrete set of entitlements for working parents – and family policy regimes, meaning policies in their wider context, including migrancy as a mediating factor.

In 2015 the Romanian anthropologist Vintilă Mihăilescu wrote about the practice of migration in the case of the Romanian society, showing how it is ultimately deeply rooted, before 1989, in the communist period. Under the pressure of internal migration from villages to cities, the traditional Romanian family suffered a major structural transformation. According to the Romanian anthropologist, the diffuse family – household, as he calls it, seems to be “the grandmother” of the transnational family. The current practices of transnational families were formed based on these roots, of the “diffuse” family. Starting from the idea of Mihăilescu, the aim of this articleis to investigate the main (re)structures of the kinship practices in the Romanian society under the impact of external migration after 1989. One of the findings of the study shows that in the Romanian traditional society, preserving kinship cohesion meant a series of obligations and liabilities that were often transmitted from one generation to another without being questioned. They basically constituted and maintained the channel of communication between family members. The members of transnational families have absorbed these traditional structures, weaving over new formulas to adapt family practices(Morgan: 2011) to the specificity of transnational living, reformulating at the same time the traditional rules of kinship and adapting them to the new way of living. The study is based on materials derived from a qualitative research in five communities- three in Romania and two abroad.

This article was motivated by the centenary (2018) of the seminal sociological monograph Polish Peasant in Europe and America by Thomas and Znaniecki (1918). It shows that classics can be not only occasionally referenced but also read in-depth with the new contemporary concept of social remittances embedded in transnational ties. Reaching for the Polish Peasant in Europe and America aimed this analysis to revisit the preceding passages of migration history and to revitalise the preliminary knowledge about human moves and social change. The article is a reminder and a positioner of Thomas and Znaniecki’s monograph in their contemporary migration historical writings of Central Europe, not commonly referenced in international sociology. The methodology of the qualitative content analysis with retrospective mapping the flow of information in the illustrative cases of migrant families applied in this article, helped to analyse resistance and changes of norms, values, practices and social capital affected by international migration and bundled as social remittances.

The nuclear family, consisting of children, mother and father, is often the primary unit of analysis in migration studies. However, this approach has been criticised for its normative context. More recently, scholars have emphasized the relational perspective and multi-layered family ties when debating the notion of family. Based on qualitative anthropological research in Western Ukraine and in the Czech Republic, this article adopts this approach by focusing on how the family practices of young Ukrainians (aged 15–16 at the time of migration) challenge the nuclear family framework. These young people are the first migrants from their nuclear families in the Czech Republic, while their parents have remained in Ukraine. The text focuses on the financial support, emotional support, and practical assistance provided to them by their relatives, demonstrating that parents were still important in all three categories, while cousins were significant in providing emotional support and practical assistance.

The aim of this article is to explain the links between three levels of social reality connected with work and parenting. These levels are state policy and economy, organizational structures and social networks and individual choices of employed parents concerning the reconciliation of work and family. Adopting the frameworks of weak states, doing family as well as work and life balance (WLB), we argue that it is social solvation that causes differentiated micro-rational strategies of working parents. The analysis combines and contrasts divergent perspectives on work and family. We argue that the mezzo level, i.e. organizational culture of the workplace and parents’ networks, is undervalued in social research. In addition, we showcase the effects of people’s expectations, or social control at the workplace, on the practices of reconciling work and family observed among individuals.

The COVID-19 pandemic engendered changes in the area of family practices, including those related to the celebration of holidays. Traditional rituals and familiar ways of demonstrating familiarity had to undergo immediate and often unwanted modifications. The research results show reactions to these changes, which encompass embracing new practices, relief connected with forgoing old rituals, as well as negative evaluations of the modified family celebration practices. The analysis of the changes in holidays-related family practices resulted in a more universal proposal of attitudes towards changing family practices during social crises.

Pandemia COVID-19 wymusiła zmiany w obszarze praktyk rodzinnych, w tym tych związanych z celebrowaniem świąt. Tradycyjne rytuały i utrwalone sposoby demonstrowania rodzinności musiały ulec natychmiastowym i często niechcianym modyfikacjom.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the situation of many families. The introduced restrictions on movement along with the subsequent closing of borders halted traffic throughout the existing communication routes. Young adults who have (recently) been living on their own – working, studying, building intimate relationships – found themselves in a situation in which they returned and started living at home again with their parents, siblings, families, and sometimes with their partners. For some families, such returns can translate into an improvement in the quality of their relationships. For others, the return can be a difficult and demanding experience for one or both sides. Working out ways to move around in a shared space can prove to be a challenge, as can the potential return to the roles of a child and a parent living under one roof again. The returns and the motivations behind them, provoked by the COVID-19 pandemic, are of a different nature than those usually described. What is characteristic of them is their sudden nature as well as the common ways of rationalization visible in the economic, health (e.g. in the meaning of ensuring the safety of the loved ones in light of a crisis situation), and relational spheres. However, the experience of “Covid returns” can permanently change the image of entering adulthood by increasing openness to the stage of living back in the family home. By means of presenting five cases of children returning home during the pandemic, this article demonstrates the practices of adaptation to new family situations and new spatial solutions, while at the same time reflecting different variants and effects of a temporary shifting back in time to the situation of a full nest.

The aim of the article is to discuss the functioning of transnational families through the perspective of the transnational perspective. This new approach to families separated by international migration underlines the importance of two features: the spatial separation of family members and a sense of community. Thus, the consequences of international  migration are not considered as a crisis, but as a new reality changing the quality of family life. The article discusses the new organization of family life in transnational families. It points out the importance of family practices for building family life. The family practices are processual, fluid and adapted to the needs of family members. They are embedded in daily rituals and confirm “familyhood even across  distance.” Parental roles are also changing. They are redefined and reorganized. New parenting (distance parenting) involves continuing to care for children and building emotional closeness, despite spatial distance.

To nowe ujęcie rodzin rozłączonych migracją zarobkową podkreśla znaczenie dwóch cech: przestrzennego rozdzielenia członków rodziny i poczucia wspólnoty. Mają one charakter procesualny, płynny i dostosowany do potrzeb członków rodziny. Nowe rodzicielstwo (distance parenting) zakłada kontynuację opieki nad dziećmi i budowanie bliskości emocjonalnej, mimo przestrzennego oddalenia.

Relationships between women and children are too often reduced to mother-child relationships. Despite the recognition of the multidimensionality of the concept of family, sociology is still dominated by the focus on relationships between parents and children, and intimate couples. Meanwhile, motherhood is not the only experience and pattern of close relationships between women and children. One of these other experiences is aunting. Based on an analysis of the literature on aunting, I point out ways of defining who an aunt is and who can become one, as well as what expectations are imposed on her. I discuss family practices and the forms of aunts’ presence in relationships with nieces and nephews: including relational work, care work, supporting them in crisis situations, modelling behaviour and aunts’ rejection of maternal norms of care and sacrifice I also analyse the meanings for aunts and nieces and nephews of the existence of relationships with each other. Aunting offers insights into non-maternal relationships between women and children, in which both parties can retain their agency.
