The subject of this article is the first pilgrimage by John Paul II to Poland in 1979. An analysis of his speeches delivered during this pilgrimage and the historical circumstances of the pilgrimage itself (the first pilgrimage by a Pope to Poland, a country with a socialist system at that time which promoted atheism; a visit by a Polish Pope to his home country shortly after his election to the Holy See; a visit to a Pope’s homeland other than Italy – a phenomenon unknown in the history of the papacy for the previous 455 years) allows us to capture its special character in the history of Poland and in the life of Karol Wojtyła / John Paul II. The Pope was faced with a difficult pastoral and diplomatic task, which was to fulfil his religious mission (strengthening the Christian faith in Poland and in other Slavic nations; showing the path of development for the Church in Poland; showing gratitude to the Polish Church for her heroic perseverance in the People’s Republic of Poland; emphasising the cultural role of Christianity in the world) and also to change the image of Poland in the world (while carefully avoiding any escalation of tensions between the Church and the state authorities and the influence of the USSR in Poland). This was accompanied – from a sociopsychological perspective – by his taking up the role of leader of the universal Church, a role which he had to learn, and, at the same time, maintaining the style of communication with his countrymen which he had developed earlier while a church dignitary in Poland.

Towarzyszyło mu – w perspektywie socjopsychologicznej – wchodzenie w rolę przywódcy Kościoła powszechnego, której musiał się uczyć, i jednocześnie podtrzymywanie wypracowanego wcześniej, w czasie piastowania funkcji dostojnika kościelnego w Polsce, stylu komunikacji z rodakami.

The article shows that monograph “Sources of Renewal. The Implementation of Vatican II” by Karol Wojtyła is an innovative interpretation of the conciliar doctrine, aimed at deepening the awareness of faith and forming a Christian attitude of responsibility for the revealed truth and for the community of the Church. In presenting this issue, reference is made to reviews of the book published in Poland and abroad, noting also the genesis of the monograph and the history of its editions and translations into foreign languages. Such a perspective, without entering into a substantive analysis of the book’s content, nevertheless entitles one to conclude that Wojtyła’s monograph is an undervalued position in the contemporary discussion about Vatican II, as well as for understanding John Paul II’s pontificate as an intellectual and pastoral process of conciliar reception. Therefore, in-depth studies on the monograph are needed, as well as further editions of the monograph with an appropriate introduction and indexes to facilitate its reading.

Based on archival research, the author of the paper presents a biography of the stepsister of Karol Wojtyła Sr., the father of the future Pope John Paul II, as well as an outline of her public activity. Stefania Wojtyła was born on 16 December 1891 in Biała, near Bielsko. Having received a proper education for the job, she began working as a primary school teacher. She was deeply committed to teaching children and continued her work in a number of elementary schools. She did not marry, but she kept in close touch with her relatives in Wadowice. She frequently visited them and, after the passing of her stepbrother’s wife, made every effort to support him. During the Second World War, she began teaching in a German grade school, which required from her to register with the Volksliste (German People’s List) and, after the war, made it impossible for her to continue her teaching job in the district of Biała. However, she successfully applied for a teaching position in Stodoły, near Rybnik, in the Recovered Territories, where Fr. Karol Wojtyła, her nephew, would visit her repeatedly. Finally, she joined him in Cracow, where she was his housekeeper at 21, Kanonicza Street. She passed away on 24 May 1962 and was buried in the same tomb as her nephew’s mother.

Autor artykułu w oparciu o materiały archiwalne przedstawia życie i działalność przyrodniej siostry Karola Wojtyły seniora, ojca papieża Jana Pawła II. Zmarła 24 maja 1962 i została pochowana w grobowcu, w którym wcześniej spoczywała matka Papieża.

One of the main themes in the 20th century disagreements about man is the question of freedom, which seems to be the most complicated and, at the same time, intriguing phenomenon in the characteristics of the human subject. Karol Wojtyła suggests positioning freedom not only in the horizon of the irreducibility of the person as a subject, who autonomously decides about self and gives direction to own activities, but also in the area of interpersonal community. Being a person as a free subject appears as “in relation to” or “referring to” (something, somebody). We respond to values by making choices. The world of values is extremely rich and varied. It also encompasses other people, who are in relation to one another. Therefore, to be a person means more than just to be for oneself, in oneself and by oneself. To be a person is to be in relation to other people and to values. The community-oriented character of freedom is focused on in the philosophical writings by Karol Wojtyła, who on numerous occasions emphasizes the fact that a person may reach fulfilment through another human being, in a community with others, without losing anything of own subjectivity or individuality. Wojtyła wishes to deal with the problem of one of the fundamental conditions upon the fulfilment of which the community I-You may become a reality of subjects fulfilment. In order to achieve this purpose, Wojtyła undertakes analyses of participation, solidarity, community, whose proper specification in the perception of freedom aims at emphasizing the sense of man’s existence together with other human beings, on the one hand, and the purpose of man’s earthly journey, on the other hand.

The article deals with the problem of the importance of Karol Wojtyła’s philosophy. He is shown as a thinker interested in the achievements of many philosophers throughout history, like Aristotle, St. Augustin, Thomas Aquinas, Immanuel Kant or Max Scheler. However, he is also presented as someone who undertook his own way of philosophizing focused on the human person. Therefore the article underlines Wojtyła’s dialogue with other philosophers at the time when he was developing his own philosophical standpoint. Moreover, his philosophy is shown as a discipline associated with real problems rather than with meta-philosophical ones. The article also discusses Wojtyła’s philosophy of the human person and how it can deal with anti-personalist tendencies in contemporary philosophy. Finally, the author considers some difficulties associated with the philosophy of Wojtyła and how it should be developed in the future.

The article contains analysis of human ability of communication. The fundament of my reflexion about communication is philosophy of person. Only communication focused on the person have a chance to be authentic and effective (without any mental barriers or obstacles to communication). This is the main conclusion of this article.

A book review of Karol Wojtyla's Ethics Primer.

Not only during the period of his Pontificate, but also during previous years, the activity of Karol Wojtyła is worth recalling, appreciating and internalizing, and his preached and written teaching on responsible parenthood should be put into practice. The teaching about man, love, marriage, and parenthood is still relevant today. However, there are both those who support them as well as those who oppose them, particularly, opponents who avoid moral principles, especially in the field of the transmission of life. Therefore, a question arises about the effects of Cardinal Wojtyła’s efforts to protect the dignity of a child and a woman – mother, as well as morality in the area of procreation. The victory of the truth, visible in the encyclical Humanae vitae promulgated by Paul VI, is a success, while the spread of demoralization experienced to this day by groups promoting abortion and contraception and especially the poor moral condition of future spouses and parents, creates new challenges.

Announcing in the German Church the so called synodal way provoked discussions concerning the participation and joint responsibility of all the faithful in the implementation of the Church mission, especially with regard to exercising power and making binding decisions. The aim of the presented reflections (comments) is to look at the discussion in the light of the theory of participation, analysed by Karol Wojtyła in his work The Acting Person. The co-existence of the community of action and the personal value of the act and experiencing as one`s own jointly made decisions may set the direction for new paradigms of exploring sensus fidei.

Human-related issues are the objected personalism. One of the current problems contemporarily recognized and widely known is data protection. The article aims to present a mutual connection between legal regulations of data protection, taking under consideration GDPR, and personalism. The conclusion is that there are many elements in legal regulations that justify the conviction that the protection of personal data can be seen as an expression of personalism.

The article discusses the mentions of citizens of Wadowice who, like Karol Wojtyla, followed church of academic carreers. The author examines the period from the close of the Middle Ages till the times of a renown theologian from Wadowice – Marcin Wadowita (died in 1641). He tries to find all the students from Wadowice studying in Cracow at that time. The author, besides the most important facts from the life of Martin Wadowita, describes so far unknown portrait of the professor to be found in Karmelitę Monastery in Krakow. Apart from Wadowita, the article also describes Jakub from Wadowice (died in 1495), a provost in the monastery of canons regular in Kazimierz.
