The authoress analyzes various forms of interaction between verbal and visual messages. It is very common nowadays to assume that we live in the 'civilization of image' that minimizes the role of traditional verbal messages. Though, various cases of verbal-visual structures let us presume that instead of monopoly of one kind of message, we rather have to deal with intermediacy. It is argued that the new model of interaction between verbal and visual forms has been introduced: both kinds of elements not only coexist in the same message, but penetrate each other in order to create a new hybrid construction as, for instance in: the press photography with captions, the dynamic typography and the hypertext. The article pays special attention to the theoretical background - the postmodern turn in semiotics: Lyotard's figure is opposed to Barthes' modern theories.

Traditionally, we associate the language concept with that of communication. In practice, however, this conceptual link is treated by linguists too loosely and arbitrarily. In the current study, we try to render the relationship of language to communication more transparent and accurate. We start by confronting the properties of speaking with those of other modes of human interaction. Such an approach helps us to gain a more adequate insight into the nature of language, its origins and its role in our life.

The purpose of this study is to define manipulation and separate it theoretically from persuasion as much as possible, as well as to present linguistic realizations of manipulative psychological strategies applied in written advertisements. The corpus consists of half and one page size written advertisements collected from various magazines. To define and separate manipulation vs. persuasion the authoress applies the Gricean cooperative model (GRICE 1997), the face-work model elaborated by GOFFMAN (1995), and SPERBER & WILSON's (1986) ostensive-inferential communication model. The Gricean model reveals that, while persuasion is a kind of cooperative linguistic behaviour, manipulation involves violation of the cooperative principle. In the face-work model persuasion can be classified as a facethreatening act, and although manipulation seems at first sight to be face-protecting, in fact it is facethreatening as well. Persuasion and manipulation can be best separated with the help of the ostensiveinferential communication model. This model claims that while persuasion is communication, manipulation is not communication. She analyses the linguistic realizations of four different ps ychologicalstrategies: the minimum-group paradigm, threatening, personal experience and uniqueness. With the help of the analysis she presents the linguistic devices that can make those psychological strategies work.

(Polish title: Przeslanki i kierunek zmian komunikacji pomiedzy firma i klientami w kontekscie ewolucji postaw oraz rozwoju cyfrowych narzedzi komunikacyjnych). 1. Purpose The aim of the article is to show potential changes in the communication between a company and its clients in the context of information needs, the social attitudes of people and the development of digital communication tools. 2. Methodology This paper consists of theoretical considerations concerning communication needs, social attitudes and digital communication tools, as well as some chosen study results. The conclusions from the discussion conducted during the conference 'Time for growth 2011', whose participants were both representatives of the scientific world and business practitioners, were presented together with the results of the surveys by questionnaire conducted during the conference. 3. Findings The premises for cooperation between clients and companies based on the desire to raise the quality of life of local communities were also depicted in the study. What influences this cooperation is, on the one hand, the development of digital communication tools and, on the other hand, people's attitudes proving the willingness to be involved in the exchange of knowledge and experience for the widely understood improvement of life conditions. Many fears and barriers are also perceived, especially concerning the intentions and honesty of companies. 4. Research limitations/implications Both the surveys by questionnaire and the discussion were conducted among the participants of the conference, which was a limitation to this research. 5. Originality The article indicates a possible direction of communication development and cooperation between companies and clients. The preferred media are communication solutions available on the Internet allowing for direct contacts, and simultaneously used by individuals of higher activity. The main motivating factor for clients is the conviction that they are able to contribute to the improvement of the quality, functionality and availability of products and services. Material bonuses may be interpreted negatively. The clients' opinion on the sincerity of the intentions of the company is of great significance for any potential exchange of information and experience. However, it is generally assumed that companies initially fulfill their goals without perceiving their clients' interest.

Conscious language teachers are searching for alternative methods to sustain or reinforce the educational bond with students. The Communicative Approach is a student-centred method concentrating on language as a medium of communication. The target linguistic system is learned with the use of discussions, debates, projects, group work and authentic materials. In contrast to traditional language teaching the communicative method is learner-oriented, as it is dictated by learner’s needs and interests. It could bring inspiration and encouragement to both teachers and students.

The aim of the article is to discuss the indeclinable English loan words that are used in contemporary Slovak in the singular and in their plural form, i.e. with the original –s ending. In the article three such nouns (show – shows, star – stars, and headline – headlines) are analysed. The author examines in what contexts and registers they frequently appear in. As it is, these words are often to be found in the media and the mass media (advertising, etc.) and in show business. They have already permeated from these registers into the colloquial language, as seen for example on internet discussion boards. Even though there are not so many words like these in Slovak, their frequency of use is rather high. The possibility of distinguish between the plural form and the singular form may help in cases where the grammatical number is vague, perhaps due to the lack of context.

The aim of the article is to use analytic and interpretative methods to present the pragmatic-communicative potential of the expressive characters of individual language levels as identified in the chosen texts of pre-election media discourse. The introduction section clarifies the definition of the term (media) discourse and in relation to pragmatics implies the inevitability of its understanding in terms of interdisciplinarity. Based on the pre-election texts published on the Facebook site of the chosen political party, we highlight the persuasively-oriented pragmatic-communicative possibilities of some language phenomena. In the mode of pars pro toto, the contribution aims to point out the selected pragmatic-communicative aspects of the language phenomena of the Slovak language appearing in the area of media discourse.

The question of 'communication' is in the center of the essay, when focusing on the great Danish thinker, Sören Kierkegaard and his view on angels. Being brought up in a Lutheran environment and greatly influenced by his father (himself a member of a fundamentalist Lutheran sect), Kierkegaard's 'angelic experiences' differed very much from those listed in Catholic interpretations or conserved in everyday references to celestial beings. Facing both the surviving pagan traditions (and referred to its 'heavenly' messengers) and referring to the angels of Kierkegaard's Copenhagen (maily as decorations and ornaments) the study highlights the more important, often determinant references of Kierkegaard to angels. In the list of such 'appearances' in his oeuvre, by angels the 'question of communication' is examinated in an original way, while the 'authenticity' is questioned and/or emphasized by their presence. His ideas about transformations of angelic beings into demonic (daimonic) or even diabolic ones, has its very special emphasis of the once common origin of all these creatures, while final and fatal 'fall' of transcendental conscience is mirrored by the fall of angels, when marrying mortal women. His conclusion, that theology married reason the way once fallen angels did, refers to this tragedy, once creating monsters of early times and now repeating this mortal seduction in the 'world of spirit'.

The opposition between the motoric and visual method of reading a text releases a tension between the visible and the invisible, which is active in both original projects of literary structures and individual courses of reading. Visualisation, that is, transformation of the invisible into the visible, is opposed by de-visualisation (transformation of the visible into the invisible) and re-visualisation which consists in regaining an image that has been lost beforehand. These processes are graduable, non-obligatory, imprecise, important for the work's aesthetic facet, neutral in interpretation, the latter being oriented, as a rule, toward combinations of meanings. In lexical resources of language, the visualisation experience becomes the source for distinction of a group of 'visualisms' - units being independent of the norms of grammar. This alters the classical Jakobsonian model of act of communication, since a text imbued with 'visualisms' refers the reader simultaneously to the code and the context, rendering it unfeasible to separate the metalinguistic and the cognitive function.

The study is devoted to the models of family systems and styles of upbringing. The author attempts to show to what extent preferences for a set of definite beliefs regarding family relationships plays a part in implementing a specific style of upbringing in the family. The aim of the study is to clarify whether the implicit model of beliefs about family corresponds with the explicit model, and insofar as these models do not correspond, to discover with which types of family systems the disharmony of models is associated. The author considers that the specific communication pattern plays an important role in the relation between implicit and explicit models of beliefs about family. Research reveals that a symmetrical communication pattern is characteristic of the kind of family environment where harmony reigns between the implicit and explicit models. Conversely, an asymmetrical communication pattern corresponds to disharmony of the parent´s explicit statements and inconsistency in the management of upbringing, which leads to a mixed mode of upbringing that was recorded, which means that in the framework of social interaction the family systems do not function in their pure form. At the individual level the author´s hypothesis was not confirmed: implicit and explicit models of beliefs about family were found to be in harmony.

The aim of the paper is to explore the presuppositions of intercultural dialogue on the background of the analysis and model typology of dialogical speech acts. One of the unexpected consequences of the postmodern developments in Western philosophy is a fundamental crisis of its traditional universalist paradigm. This paradigm is challenged by an ambitious pluralist one, which is rooted in cultural world diversity. The paper explores a justified philosophical answer to a possible intercultural dialogue. It also asks the question what inherent elements and what types of dialogue should create the basis of such an „intercultural speaking“.
