The article is about the attempt to find the answer to the question in what range and in which shape the proverbs are present in contemporary literature. We extended the analysis over 13 published books which were awarded the Nike prize over the years 1997–2009. The proverbs occurred only in 6 prose books with 19 units either woven into the matter of the text or quoted as a citation. Half of them occurred in a basic canonical form whilst the rest came in abbreviations or a modified form. It was also noted that the proverbs occur in the speech of characters representing the older generation.
The article discusses transformations of the proverb na złodzieju czapka gore / на воре [и] шапка горит in Polish and Russian-language online media (lexical changes, additions, grammatical modifications, contaminations).
This paper offers an analysis of indexical expressions and proper names as they are used in proverbs. Both indexicals and proper names contribute properties rather than objects to the propositions expressed when they are used in sentences interpreted as proverbs. According to the proposal, their contribution is accounted for by the mechanism of descriptive anaphora. Indexicals with rich linguistic meaning, such as ‘I’, ‘you’ or ‘today’, turn out to be cases of the attributive uses of indexicals, i.e. uses whose contribution relies on the linguistic meaning of the word. Third person pronouns, names of locations as well as surnames are analyzed as non-attributive descriptive uses.

In 2016 the author took part in a scientific fieldtrip of German academics to Iranian Azerbaijan. There he received two books devoted to the Armenian dialect of the town Salmast. One of them was a collection of about 800 proverbs in this dialect spoken in the past near a town located to the north-west of Lake Urmia (Orumiye). The present publication gives English translation of about 50 proverbs of the Salmast dialect.
The article presents an attempt at determining how the Polish language was affected by hunting, which has been part of the Polish economy and culture for centuries. Linguistic material extracted from lexicographic and online sources was described and characterised for this purpose, which allowed for enriching the content related to contemporary Polish. The analysis of how the studied vocabulary is registered indicates a diversity in its functionality, while an overview of its use by the members of the hunting community proves that some of the words are being extracted from language archives and used as part of the names of huntingclubs or hunting magazines. Present among the hunting-related onyms are chrematonyms, anthroponyms and toponyms that show hunting’s historical links to people and places. Hunting-related proverbs conceptualise the diverse image of hunters; the diverse linguistic elements collected for and described in the study reflect the realities of hunting. The lexis, proverbs, place names and surnames morphologically related to hunting wild animals constitute a testament to the significant role that this area of life played and still plays in Polish culture.
This paper is the third part of a triptych that presents the publishing history of three Cracow reissues of 1619, 1620 and 1634 of a collection of Polish proverbs Proverbiorum Polonicorum […] centuriae decem et octo prepared by Salomon Rysiński. This section discusses the editorial work of Stanisław Serafin Jagodyński on the new Cracow edition of Rysiński’s 1620 collection, which, according to the wording of its title, was “corrected in many places”. First of all, Jagodyński softened the anti-Catholic implications of some of the proverbs noted by Rysiński, who was a Calvinist. Secondly, he rewrote some of the proverbs, replacing the original phrasings with versions that he was more familiar with. Thirdly, he added twenty new proverbs. In comparison with Jagodyński’s paremiographic erudition, this number is relatively small (in his epigrams one can find many more proverbs unknown to Rysiński), as he did not think it part of his duties as the editor of the collection. Jagodyński introduced supplementary information mostly in the critical apparatus. He added a total of sixty-eight Polish proverbs to the Latin equivalents taken from the collection of Adagia by Erasmus Roterodamus, thus completing the first erudite collection of Polish proverbs.
In the article the Author analyses modern proverb modifications in the context of the assumptions of contextual studies within paremiology. Research material was excerpted from internet sources in the Ukrainian language that feature an especially dynamic process of creation of innovations based on canonical proverbs functioning in Ukrainian. This research is a continuation of analyses of modern tendencies in the European paremiology. Textological- -pragmatical approach treats proverbs as situational macrosigns that have a wide range of usage in texts. Proverb modifications indicate that paremiology is still an active pragmatic form of verbalisation of varied messages that is effectively used by speakers in numerous texts and contexts.
The aim of this paper is a comprehensive examination of the contemporary collections and dictionaries of Polish proverbs for the young audience. The abundance of such publications in Poland enables the author to have a close look at numerous issues related to paremiography itself as well as the youngest readers. The paper analyses the content of the collections and dictionaries with a special focus on the selection of proverbs, the presentation of their semantics and pragmatics, their arrangement in the books and the illustration of their usage. The analysis reveals many differences between the collections regarding the number of items, their typology, the description of their meanings and use as well as the illustrative content. The paper suggests integrating the description of the contemporary proverb dictionaries for children with educational material with an eye to describing the ways in which proverbs are presented, explained and taught.
The research on the phenomenon of variantivity in natural languages should comprise all their subsystems. Much attention has been given to phonetic, morphological, lexical, phraseological phenomena, while strictly paremiological ones have been handled to a lesser extent to date. The discussed issue of proverbial innovations in the contemporary Polish language partly fills in the research gap. The factographic material collected in the paper has shown a significant nominative and expressive potential of paremic units fulfilled as a result of numerous modifications of the canonical form of the proverbs used commonly in the Polish language. The said results could be obtained from the paremiological material excerpted with the use of www.google.com search engine in generally available online resources. The criterion adopted for selecting the initial units was the indicator of their frequency based on the socalled paremiological minimum. Afterwards, a secondary modified proverb was compared to its original, which enabled a description of basic innovation mechanisms and identification of the function of a specific registered innovation.
C.S. Lewis created several proverbs in his novel The Horse and His Boy. One of these has now become broadly used in English-speaking society. This article cites evidence that this new proverb is now being used in novels, poetry, short stories, blogs, and in giving advice. Wolfgang Mieder has noted that there are very few published studies about proverbs created in the last century, so this article fills this gap regarding this proverb. The focus of this article is on the growing use of this proverb, not on proverbs generally.
This paper aims to examine selected proverbs that derive from the Holy Bible. It seems that the issue of proverbs is widely discussed by linguists; however, the examination of proverbs that come from the Holy Scripture appear to require more attention. Since it is impossible to provide an exhaustive description of the abundance of proverbs that permeate the Holy Bible, animals have been chosen to constitute the focal motif. The selected proverbs are analysed according to the assumptions of the Axiological Invariance Principle and the Great Chain of Being metaphors. Making reference to the symbolism of particular motifs, the axiological charges of the proverbs are explained. We conclude that the majority of the presented proverbs reveal negative axiological charges; however, it would be inappropriate to conclude that all animals depicted in the Holy Bible are regarded as an incarnation of purely evil phenomena.
This article analyses the style of Mongolian proverbs. The style of Mongolian proverbs is based on the unification of disparate ideas by means of metaphors, similes as well as their familiarities and contrasts. The general procedures of their stylistic structures are parallelism and repetition. Alliteration, a characteristic feature of Mongolian oral literature, is also used. It is also pointed out that the main characteristic of the style of proverbs is the creative usage of connotation words.
The article tackles short forms of folklore in one of Estonian regions – Virumaa. The discussion maps the close ties that exist between old parishes in terms of folk material, characterised by archaic and dialectal traits as well as by a strong influence from the traditional folk songs in runo verse (regilaul). Another regional characteristic is the influence of kindred peoples who once lived in the same area as well as from neighbouring peoples. The proverbs and sayings display a richness of unique expressions but also the first mentions of well-known Estonian traditional expressions. Next to folk sayings, humour related to neighbours as well as pejorative sayings based on place names are also discussed, with a specific focus on regional characteristics.
Proverb is a genre of folklore and it is thought reflection of the whole nation. The proverbs contain rich material about the perception of the world and reflect the specific conditions of development of material and spiritual culture. The examined proverbs illustrate the stereotypes of the Poles and Czechs about themselves, their neighbours and other nations.
The article presents a combined approach towards a comparison of proverbs in different languages through the analysis of culture-specific concepts that are essential for coding the meaning of proverbs. The theory of culture keywords (Wierzbicka 1997) is adopted to the analysis of Hausa proverbs in a comparative perspective. The aim of the article is to indicate that proverbs are a representation of the linguistic image of the world and therefore may be subject to comparison in terms of the similarities and differences between languages and cultures. The word frequency analysis of 1505 Hausa proverbs led to identifying 55 items whose function can be specified as Hausa culture keywords. The presentation of 10 top items is to confirm their culture values and to identify 6 thematic areas which they represent. The presentation of 10 other keywords shows that the distinguished areas and their lexical representation may be used as methodological basis for comparative works on proverbs.
Each language and each community name and evaluate the objects and events that exist in their world. The specific names that have been given to separate concepts are used in different contexts. In this way, a name becomes part of the idioms and proverbs of a given language. In every language, there are phrases, expressions and proverbs that have not changed and have been preserved over the centuries. The mere existence of a lexicon referring to the specific topic testifies to the importance and interest of a given issue for a community using a specific language. This paper includes the definition of jealousy/envy in both the Polish and Turkish languages, and the proverbs and phraseological expressions connected with the meaning of jealousy/envy. All the chosen proverbs and expressions, grouped subject-wise, will be presented in Polish translation. The Polish equivalents of Turkish proverbs are also be provided whenever exact or very similar Polish versions have been found. Groups containing particular proverbs and expressions describe: 1. the perception of jealousy/envy and the way it is manifested; 2. the engendering of jealousy; 3. the general truth concerning jealousy/envy; 5. proverbs giving advice on how it is necessary to behave.
The paper investigates proverbial elements in Polish mural inscriptions. The main aim of the paper is to consider paremic mural inscriptions with an eye to determining if proverbs are used in Polish graffiti only as content-free play on traditional folk wisdom. The starting point in this analysis is the assumption that proverbs and non-paremic graffiti exhibit both similarities and differences and that most paremic uses in graffiti can be classified as anti-proverbial in character. Many studies suggest that the dominant feature of anti-proverbs is their mocking and humorous nature. The paper then tries to establish if mural anti-proverbs can be treated also as carriers of various sentiments which do not necessarily deny the traditional nuggets of wisdom, but are used to convey observations and truths based on them, which pertain to contemporary reality and regulate it in the same way as traditional paremias do.

This paper is an attempt to show the possibilities offered by an analysis of a historical dictionary in researching the old ways of perceiving, categorizing and evaluating the world. The observations in question are based on proverbs extracted from Nowy dykcjonarz by Michał Abraham Troc, which is one of the most significant achievements of Polish lexicography of the eighteenth century. Using the methodology of linguistic worldview reconstruction, the authors present the ways of perceiving certain occupations (shoemakers, blacksmiths, wheelwrights, cooks, doctors, executioners) by people in the eighteenth century and provide the cultural context of these perceptions. The analysis demonstrates that language is not only a communication tool, but also a carrier of the collective experience and outlook on life.
