Recently, the popularity of building savings has grown. Many people thus are faced with selecting a suitable product. Unfortunately, most clients sign a contract with the bank holding their current account and/or other products. In this simplified manner of choosing, customer’s preferences are often unnecessarily suppressed. To eliminate this, or to select the building savings most appropriate to customer’s needs, a complex user-friendly multi-criteria evaluation procedure is proposed. This approach can consider, as opposed to other well-known methods, all requirements and conditions of a building savings selection. The application power of the proposed concept is illustrated using real situations that can occur on the Czech market. Two most frequent types of client are specified (primarily oriented to a deposit return, and getting a loan). Besides “standard” situations, some more specific cases (a non-traditional savings period of nine years, or building savings for children) are also studied in order to have a greater impact of study to the practice with this product. For each savings strategy, the most suitable building savings is selected. Subsequently, the results are compared and analysed.

A standard indicator for the amount of wages is the average value, i.e., the arithmetic mean. The average wages are regularly published as one of the economic quantities in which all employees are interested. As a matter of course it is often said that about two-thirds of employees do not achieve the average value of wages. One of the reasons for this fact may be the existence of high wages – that is, wages substantially higher than most of the others. We will see in this paper that, even if there are not many such wages, they may have a strong effect on the average value. Our calculations will show this effect on particular data. We will exclude the high wages from the complete set and recalculate the average values after such exclusions. We will also study the proportion of the high wages in the quantity and amount of all wages. We will also be interested in the value of the median and how this value is changed by excluding the high wages. Another observation is that the high wages and their effects on the average values is predominantly a domain of men – this influence is much smaller for women.

The Czech society is considered, together with the society of the former East Germany, to be one of the most secularized in the world. The aim of the present paper is to sketch in a large outline not only the historical preconditions of this opinion, but also to resume the existing partial results of ethnological research focused on the contemporary changes of religiousness and manifestations of Marian devotion in the Czech Republic after the year 1989. The years 1989 a 1990 brought innumerable forms of religiousness. From the variants of classical Chriastianity through its rather deformed forms up to the spiritual schools of the Far East. At presents there are two Marian movements in Czec Republic: Marian Movements of Priests and Apostolate of Fatima (Blue Army).

Public procurement is one of the forms of provision of public goods and services. Empirical studies analysing public procurement show, that one of the weaknesses of public procurement in the Czech Republic is its low transparency and resulting insufficient resistance to corruption. This study defines base for establishment of transparent and corruption free system of public procurement. It specifies conditions for creation of competitive environment, basis for demand driven system of public procurement and gives proposals for interconnection of transparent decision making procedures and the principles of economy, efficiency and effectiveness.

This article seeks to contribute to current debate on the role of clusters in the competitiveness of member firms, by investigating the actual contribution of recently established clusters and by analysing the intensity and nature of the links within two clusters, in the Czech Republic. The analysis is based on data, acquired through qualitative research – interviews – with both members and non-members of the two selected clusters (Clutex, a textile cluster, and Plastr, comprised of firms operating in the plastic industry). The results provide no decisive proof concerning the contribution of clusters to firm competitiveness; however, the interviewed firms recognise and appreciate several advantages of their cluster membership, such as joint research, joint purchasing of materials, improved marketing opportunities. Surprisingly, much more intensive links were discovered in the case of the Clutex cluster, whose members are not concentrated in one region, as are Plastr’s members, but are spread over several regions. This indicates the relevance of other factors, such as cognitive and organizational proximity, on the intensity of inter-firm linkages.

Since the mid-2010s, Czech Republic has been implementing inclusive education measures on a wide scale. Five stages of supportive measures have been introduced, including the assignment of teaching assistants (TAs) for students with special educational needs. In the four years since the main reform, the assignment of TAs has become the most implemented supportive measure, even as their role in promoting inclusive education has been questioned in the scholarly literature. We base our findings on empirical research in primary schools and relevant policy documents. This paper focuses on the clashes between policy intentions and the practice of incorporating TAs into classrooms. We organise the findings into four categories of policy/practice conflicts: (1) ambiguous TA job descriptions; (2) insufficient TA qualifications; (3) combined TA contracts due to lack of funding; and (4) inconsistencies in TA appointments. Our findings suggest that, in practice, policy-regulated measures often do not correspond to the actual needs of schools.

The paper deals with up-to-date situation in social entrepreneurship in the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic. The aim of the paper is to analyse the incidence of social enterprises in the given countries and analyse them based on chosen variables. The literature review and various legal forms of enterprise are presented in the theoretical part. The secondary data from the Czech Social Enterprise website are used. The sample consists of 219 companies registered in the website’s database by 22nd March 2016 and 44 enterprises in Slovakia. Social enterprises in both countries are analysed according to their distribution in regions, date of establishment, legal form, activity of social enterprise, and in the Czech Republic by frequency of providing facultative compensation.

The article deals with an analysis of regional differences in rental housing affordability following rent deregulation in the Czech Republic. The objective is to identify the types of households potentially at risk of being unable to afford housing, to map the development of potential housing (un)affordability since 2000, and to trace the development of regional differences in the percentage of at-risk households in the Czech Republic. Owing to the absence of useful aggregate data on incomes and expenditures for different household types in the regions of the Czech Republic, the authors created their own simulation methodology for measuring housing affordability, which uses available regional wage statistics and data on market rents. The results indicate that the general risk of being unable to afford rental housing and regional differences in housing affordability are both decreasing, but there is still a relatively large group of households that under current wage conditions for paying social benefits would be unable to afford to pay market rents.

The main objective of this study is interested primarily in the inter-individual diversity in fertility according to the parity distribution of women reproduction in Czech Republic and Slovakia. The authors identify a sharp decline in the concentration of reproduction during the 20th century at very low levels. It was primarily the result of a very low childlessness with combination of significant domination of the two-child family model. This trend has reversed for the most recent cohorts. It appears that this development mainly triggered by pluralization of reproductive behaviour. The youngest cohort tends to increase childlessness as well as increase the proportion of women with only one child. The growing concentration of reproduction suggests that future society in Czech Republic and Slovakia should not simply focus on “average” women (or mother) but should take into an account a wide spectrum of orientations and life strategies.

This article explores the complex role played by the staff of open-air museums in the Czech Republic, their relationship with the communities they work with, and their impact on the intangible cultural heritage outside the museum gates. It further explores the considerable role played by researchers active in policy making at open-air museums. The position of open-air museums is rather intricate from the perspective of communities and the state administration, with many different roles and tasks that allow and sometimes even encourage open-air museum employees to transform heritage rules or create new ones. Our conclusions are based on several case studies illustrating how the staffs of Czech open-air museums build their relationships with communities, groups and individuals and how this collaboration effects the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage. Ethical issues related to museum interpretation and perceptions of interpreted elements by the public are also discussed

In this paper the author examines the interrelation between monetary and nonmonetary incentive measures and the performance of a betting firm in the Czech Republic. Previous studies have focused either solely on monetary measures in order to examine the positive and adverse monetary incentive effects or on measuring the effect of certain nonmonetary managerial objectives and often on the level of top managers. He argues that the monetary and nonmonetary incentive measures should be analysed separately as they influence the final outcome in a methodologically different way and that the analysis on lower level of organization can bring more reliable data. The evidence from unique set of medium term data from the Czech betting firm shows the possible positive effect of increased wage variability on its performance while the effect of trainings and nonmonetary rewards were proven as insignificant.

The public expenditure programs create an integral and very important part of public expenditure. Their efficiency is greatly influenced by the value of transaction costs. This issue is currently being widely discussed both on the theoretical and the practical level. The aim of presented paper is to define the position of the transaction costs in methodological framework of 3E and to summarize the results of their measurements in the Czech Republic. The article divides transaction costs into two groups: administrative (expended by the program administrators) and compliance (expended by recipients). Presented results of empirical research clearly show that size of transaction costs is certainly significant. The value of relative administrative costs is between 0.1 and 4%. Significantly higher are, however, relative compliance costs; in some cases even reach 28%.

Chapbooks as a very specific genre of printed materials are a unique type of a society‘s material memory, one that is currently under threat due both to its physical medium and its ephemeral nature and bibliographic uniqueness. The Institute of Ethnology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, as one of the bodies tasked with the preservation of the nation‘s cultural heritage in the area of popular culture, has undertaken to process and make publicly available its collection of chapbooks by first publishing them as books and then by digitizing them and cataloguing them in a publicly accessible online database using the MARC 21 format.

Czech adults completed a self-assessed intelligence measure that yielded a score on domain-masculine intelligence (DMIQ), a composite of mathematical/logical and spatial intelligences. They also completed a sex role inventory. The sex of the participants but not their sex role was related to DMIQ. There was a positive relationship between masculinity and DMIQ, but only for males. Cultural issues in self-assessed intelligence and limitations of this study are considered.

The aim of this article is to answer the weaknesses of official health promotion programs in the Czech Republic and to find groups of people who are more likely to be temporarily incapacitated for work. The analysis of socioeconomic and demographic factors affecting the unequal chances of being temporarily disabled for work in the Czech Republic is based on data from the labour force survey from 2009–2019. The results are further compared with a similar analysis from 2002–2008 and with the results of a sample survey of the level of health in the Czech Republic. The results show that the structure of people on temporary incapacity for work has not changed significantly over time.

This text addresses the process of improving computer literacy in Hospital Jihlava which is a non-profit organization situated in the middle of the Vysočina Region in the central Czech Republic serving 150,000 inhabitants and consisting of 18 medical departments. The main aim of this text is to find out how the improvement in information technology skills can be dependent on the given training and the offered help with these basic skills. Although the IT training does not improve the primary qualification of the medical staff, the employees are eager to train their skills and learn to operate the apps to develop skills considered essential in current society. Yet, some of them are hindered from learning to work with information technologies through lacking confidence. Therefore, the necessity to motivate people to undergo training and develop their own knowledge and skills is a future challenge for the IT department of Hospital Jihlava.

We analyse the memory of voters and their ability to recall campaigns of candidates after the first-ever direct Czech presidential election. Our main focus is on identifying the campaigns best remembered by the voters. Our results show that, as predicted by the theory, the respondents could recall campaigns of the personalities that they had voted for. On the other hand, we do not confirm that people also remembered the campaigns of the candidates that they considered voting for.

Since 1989 there has been a revival of Albanian-Czech lexicography: at first in connection with humanitarian help in Kosovo and later for reasons of tourism in Albania. The article reports on dictionaries produced in this period and offers a detailed description of the latest and largest bilateral Albanian-Czech dictionary to date by Tomková and Monari (2007, Leda) and its importance for Albanian studies in the Czech Republic.

The chaplain, with a religious background practicing pastoral care, plays a role that conflicts with the norms of the secular institution that formally employs him. In this regard, prison is a highly challenging workplace. Drawing on qualitative data, we examine the position and identity of the prison chaplain in the Czech prison system. We argue that the main source of tension within the workplace is the chaplain’s profound interest in a prisoner’s personal life. This tendency is in a clear contrast with the intentions of the punitive prison system. Examples the potential of chaplain’s role are also discussed.
