The article aims to present and discuss five theoretical models explaining the issue of ideological changes in Polish political parties. The paper is to shed light on an ideology’s dynamic nature and the process of building ideology in the political parties’ environment. The article features a discussion on the circumstances favoring the implementation of ideological changes and the methods used by parties to implement changes in their ideologies. The paper adopts two research hypotheses: 1) party ideologies are developed and modified by political parties in response to the changing (social, political, economic) circumstances in the inter-party rivalry. 2) The process of ideological changes serves political parties to lead an effective inter-party rivalry. The paper establishes that the factors with scientifically documented impact on party behavior in ideological terms are as follows: electoral result (parties that achieved a result below their expectations are more eager to revise their ideologies), political competition’s activity (parties react to ideological changes of their direct rivals), electorate preferences (political forces can change their approach in crucial issues to reflect the dominant views in their electorates) and acceptance of free-market principles by the main political actors. An analysis of Polish parties’ behaviors and the gathered source material also demonstrates that the parties’ inclination to implement ideological changes depends on organizational factors.

This article examines a form of Party training in Czechoslovakia called DKV (Dny komunistické výchovy - Communist Education Days). This programme of mass indoctrination of Czechoslovak Communist Party members after the Communist takeover in February 1948 ran from August 1948 and to June 1949. The article is more generally focused on the reconstruction of everyday life within the local Party networks. It first considers the formal aspects of the DKV. Here, Party members attended lectures on a topic of the month, familiarizing themselves with the basic doctrines of Marxism-Leninism. The article reconstructs the running of the DKV in Brtnice (in the Jihlava region) and Břežany (in the Znojmo region), demonstrating that the demands of Party headquarters were considerably adapted to local circumstances and that the whole operation ended up being not quite as intensive as Party headquarters had planned. The two local organizations considered in the article often preferred other, more urgent activities, to the ideological equipping of its members. When indoctrination eventually did take place there was not as much of it as Party headquarters had planned, nor was it of the quality they had anticipated.

Liberalizm w edukacji

EN
The contemporary message of some media associates broadly understood liberalism with the pejoratively interpreted slogan “do whatever you want”. Common understanding of liberalism as, very generally speaking, libertarian views, also tends to be juxtaposed with an almost anarchist view of the world. The purpose of this text is to reflect on how liberalism can be understood (and whether there is one way to define it) and how a liberal thought influences education. Can it shape education? If so, how? The liberal tradition is not only rich and diverse (it is impossible to talk about one liberalism with a capital “L”, or rather liberalisms of specific countries), but also has a significant impact on the way of thinking about the world in its various dimensions. The text provides an overview of the main tenets of liberalism along with their historical outline. The discussion about the main ideas of liberalism serves to organize a series of, sometimes contradictory, information about it. The background outlined in this way allows us to focus on the issue of liberalism in education, while posing a number of problematic, remaining open, questions about the essence of education or the role of school in the neoliberal perspective. The entanglement of science in ideologies is also shown, an example of which is mathematics, the subject defined in accordance with the adopted philosophical or even political perspective. The overview character of the text is intertwined with questions on the border of the philosophy of education and the history of political thought, which is a good introduction to further deepening the knowledge in both these areas.

The following article comprises the description of methodology and the presentation of the results of individual research. The aim of the realised project was recognising and characterising the educational orientations of pedagogy students. The author used the Polish adapted version of W.F. O’Neill’s questionnaire on ideological orientations to survey the educational orientations of students. The questionnaire estimates six detailed educational ideologies. This article presents the results of a survey concluded on a group of 506 students of the Maria Grzegorzewska University in Warsaw. Among students the choice of liberal educational ideology is predominant. The number of followers of radical right-wing educational ideologies is marginal.

Contextualized within immigrants’ acquisition of specialized knowledge about the host country at the institutional level, this article examines a 64295-word corpus of textbooks written for participants of the orientation course in German politics, history and culture. Corpus-based techniques (“keyness,” collocation and qualitative examination of concordance lines) are deployed to explore the corpus. The findings reveal that the collocational patterns of the identified keywords construct particular world views vis-à-vis Germany. For instance, the keyword DDR [German Democratic Republic (GDR), aka East Germany] frequently co-occurs with negatively connoted lexis while collocates of the keywords denoting present-day Germany (e.g., Bundesrepublik Deutschland [Federal Republic of Germany] and Staat [nation, country, state]) facilitate the portrayal of Germany as a nurturing welfare state that is popular among foreigners. It is argued that such discursively-construed opposition between the “bad” GDR and the “good” Federal Republic of Germany helps to legitimize the German reunification. Furthermore, it is found that certain keywords (e.g., Sie [you], Kurs [course, class] and z.B. [e.g.]) are “metadiscourse resources” (Hyland, 2005). Their pedagogic effects are discussed in relation to the ideological implications of the research findings.

Totalitarismus mezi ideologií a teorií

EN
This study deals with the idea and the conception of totalitarianism. It chronicles the development of the term from its fi rst use in the 1920s to its gradually widening scope, all the way up to its formulation as a consolidated concept after WWII. It contains at its basis the conviction that totalitarianism is a unique form of political power, to be distinguished from democracy and traditional dictatorships. Soon after this conception of totalitarianism was introduced, it encountered sharp criticism aimed at its inability to embrace the changes that occurred in communist states following Stalin’s death, subjected as they were to political interests and the logic of the Cold War and the belittling of Nazi crimes implicit in the comparison between Nazism and communism. However, in the 1980s - and particularly after 1989 - the theory of totalitarianism underwent a notable renaissance. In addition to its historical aspects, studies have concentrated on several competing theories meant to transform the concept or even completely supersede it (theories regarding authoritarian regimes, Fascism and political religion). In conclusion, the author points out that from its beginnings, the theory of totalitarianism has straddled the boundaries between ideology and politics on the one hand and ideology and science on the other.
CS
Studie pojednává myšlenku a koncepci totalitarismu.

It is an axiom to say that the language of the print media is a highly effective instrument of power, politics and propaganda. This paper illustrates the fact that language can be ‘powerful ’ in terms of style and lexicon, and of the attitude to reality it expresses, which is primarily related to ideology. The authors stress the role of the Russian language in the totalitarian propaganda of the period concerned. The 1917 Revolution and civil war in Russia marked the period of the greatest conflicts and a turmoil that was accompanied by an intense ‘linguistic experience and changes to the ‘status ’ ofthe language. Intheyears immediately following the Revolution the role of the official language, conveying the single official ideology was enormous and newspapers turned out to be an efficient instrument of propaganda. They provided the main channel of totalitarian ideology, efficiently influencing social consciousness. This paper is based on an analysis of texts published in three Kazakhstani newspapers: “Glos Semirechye” (1919), “Dzhetysuyskaya Pravda” (1923), “Turkiestan komunistytchna”, “True Semirechensk Region” (1920). It is demonstrated in the conclusions that the demagogic texts published there conveyed the ideology of a totalitarian system. One of the main messages conveyed in these texts concerned the image ofa new world shaped by such factors as the Revolution, contradictions between different social classes, external and internal threats, as well as threatening the victory of reactionary forces. This paper attempts to identify and characterise the manifestations of ideology propagated at the time of the proletarian revolution.

This article examines the theoretical category of political symbols as proposed and developed by Eric Voegelin. The main focus is the usefulness of political symbols for politics, political analysis, and law. The original element of this study is a description of the genesis of the concept with a special focus on Voegelin’s early works, which are rarely mentioned in other similar analyses. The study concludes that political symbols are a theoretical tool that opens new avenues of research and can facilitate public dialogue in modern societies. Voegelin’s political symbols overcome the division into religion and ideologies. Moreover, the theory avoids some of the pitfalls that are characteristic of Carl Schmitt’s philosophy and enables a more nuanced analysis than the one based on the Huntingtonian category of civilizations.

Poniższy artykuł stanowi refleksję nad zastosowaniem teoretycznej kategorii symboli politycznych w ujęciu Erica Voegelina do badań politologicznych oraz praktycznych problemów współczesnego prawa i polityki. Konkluzją jest obserwacja, iż voegelinowska kategoria symboli politycznych to narzędzie znacznie powiększające nasze możliwości poznawcze i otwierające nowe pola dialogu społecznego. Kategoria ta przezwycięża bowiem nieprzystający już w pełni do współczesnej polityki podział na religie i ideologie, a równocześnie unika problemów charakterystycznych dla myśli politycznej Carla Schmitta i pozwala na bardziej szczegółową analizę niż upraszczające huntingtonowskie pojęcie cywilizacji.

The aim of the paper is to describe specific trends in the development of Prague street names following the end of the Second World War. The main purpose of the research is to show all topics, which arose in post-war society and which also influenced post-war street naming (e. g. eliminating symbols of Nazi Germany, celebrating of our west and east rescuers, laudation of dead heroes, turnover to hussite tradition, turnover to interwar Czechoslovakia etc.). The paper also shows examples of ideological and political influences on street naming after 1948.

The article analyses the transformation in modern Ukraine in specific manifestations of their specificity, namely – the subjectivation and massization of Ukrainian society. In analysing this problem, parallels are drawn with the conclusions of already developed concepts and ideas of foreign and Ukrainian philosophers. In the modern civilized world, according to the worldfamous scientist F. Fukuyama, there are two mutually exclusive processes dependent primarily on Western civilization. One of them is the defragmentation of communities by group identities: professional, age, religious, sexual, etc. Such a mosaic of community leads to the disappearance of unity in the country, the growth of mutual claims, misunderstandings and conflicts, the individuation of members of society to the existence of atomised individuals who lose touch with their social environment. On the other hand, there is a process of identifying the mass of people as social beings with more powerful groups, primarily nations, which leads to mutual claims at the international level and threats of authoritarianism and destruction of democracies in certain countries, especially those that have entered the modernisation process. And yet F. Fukuyama believes that understanding is possible. It is worth looking for and finding a reasonable compromise that leads to consensus. According to the author of this intelligence, such a process can be tentatively described as the formation of “liberal nationalism”. The article concludes that strengthening the subjectivity of modern Ukraine is a necessary condition for its self-affirmation as an independent state – a self-sufficient actor in the historical arena. One of the main directions in the development of subjectivation is the demassization and demassification of post-Soviet society, overcoming all signs of its postcolonialism.

Evropský pilíř sociálních práv

EN
On November 2017, the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission solemnly proclaimed the so-called European Pillar of Social Rights. They did so in the same way as in the case of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU in 2000. The document, which resembles a new social charter, contains 20 principles and rights related to equal opportunities, access to the labour market, fair working conditions, social protection and inclusion. Although the Pillar itself is not legally binding it is projected to serve as a basis for future shaping of social policy at EU level and for the convergence of the Member States social models. Meeting the criteria of the EPSR shall represent a shared political commitment and responsibility of both the Union and its Member States. From a legal and political point of view, the EPSR is a very problematic project that raises a number of questions. The evident intention behind is to take advantage of this instrument to unify social policy across the continent, according to a uniform template. Moreover, the content of this template carries a heavy ideological burden. Lastly, this act was adopted entirely outside the decision-making procedures laid down by the EU’s founding treaties and irrespective of the extent of the Union’s powers. The significance and potential implications of the EPSR should not be underestimated by referring to its soft law nature. Given the precedent of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, as well as the strong tools in the hands of the EU institutions to push the implementation of the Pillar, means that this document should be treated seriously.

Evropský parlament, Rada a Komise v listopadu 2017 slavnostně vyhlásily tzv. Naplňování Pilíře má představovat sdílený politický závazek a odpovědnost Unie i členských států.

This article addresses two issues related to hope and examined by Robert Spaemann. The first concerns the ideas propagated by world ideologies of hope. They were exposed by the prominent German thinker as illusory and utopian because they want to tie Man to the world and assure him paradise in this mortal life. Spaemann focuses on the Marxism of the 1960s and 1970s and especially the so-called ideology of pleasure promoted by Herbert Markuse. Spaemann emphasises the social consequences of those ideologies: first, the intoxication with the ideologies of many Western societies and their extraordinary euphoria, which suddenly turned into deep frustration. The ultimate perspective of what all world ideologies have to offer is most terrifying with regard to our existence. The author’s analysis of the other issue encompasses primarily the nature of hope, against which the importance of Christianity is shown both for the present and the future. In its mission, the virtue of hope inspires, motivates and encourages. The context in which this is done is manifold and diverse. Similarities were pointed out in the approach to the question of understanding hope in its two aspects – natural and supernatural – of both Robert Spaemann and Joseph Pieper. This aspect of the issue has not yet been analysed. Moreover, the author emphasised Spaemann’s indirect emphasis on responsibility for others as an aspect of the question of hope.

Analysis of thematic concentration is a method for the detection of thematic words and quantification of thematic concentration in a text. This method was applied to articles by the Czech Catholic writer and journalist Ladislav Jehlička from the period 1936-1942. The aim was to compare two sets of texts: texts that are considered by literary theorists to be ‘problematic’ due to their expression of extreme right-wing views, and texts that are ‘neutral’, dealing only with general social questions. We expect that, in view of the choice of theme, the ‘problematic’ texts will be more influenced by the author’s ideological stance, which in turn will be reflected in the linguistic characteristics of the texts. We then compare texts published under Jehlička’s real name with those which appeared under the pseudonym ‘Eljen’. The results reveal a surprisingly small presence of words expressing a right-wing stance or ‘problematic’ themes (e.g., fascism, Jewish) among so called thematic words as well as an independence of the thematic concentration of ideology. Finally, a non-significant difference between Jehlička’s and Eljen’s texts can be viewed as a proof of the author’s relatively stable style.

The article presents an outline of critical methodology in relation to toponomastics. Critical research is aimed at uncovering hidden ideologies that constitute the background of the formation or change of geographical names of various categories. In the article, the traditions of toponomastic research are shown, and against their background, the possibilities of including in such research also the critical perspective are presented. Specific examples of both research and social processes that regulate the changes of names (e.g. of streets, countries) are shown. The perspectives of critical toponomastics research are outlined; this research may be undertaken, if both theoretical methodological assumptions (the notion of social space, cultural space, symbolic power, collective memory) and source resources (the use and registration of names by users) are modified.

The article focuses on one of the factors affecting the political representation of women: political culture. Defined as the level of egalitarian gender culture in a country as related to politics in particular, its open forms can be measured in public opinion polls. But the article focuses on two less apparent forms of differentiation between the sexes in relation to politics. The first is the different way in which each gender relates conceptually to power. The second difference relates to the view that equal representation is not too important. An in-depth analysis using ideological analysis (a type of CDA) even reveals the existence of a divided concept of freedom according to gender, which is obscured by a set of other divides, such as politics versus culture, public versus private, love versus personal autonomy.

The article presents a vision of Christian hope in the view of the widely regarded German contemporary thinker – Robert Spaemann. This vision was sketched in response to the mistaken understanding of this virtue by representatives of the world’s ideologies of hope, especially of H. Markuse. The nature of hopeis shown there in the context of issues closely related to it, such as salvation and eternal life, the end of times, earthly hopes, dignity of life, progress, suffering, modes of the presence of Christians in the world and their personal qualities. Subsequently, the natural foundations of hope and its meaning are indicated and explained. What is also emphasized is the special importance of this virtue due to the kind of good it offers and the means of solving the existential problems that man will always face (including the purpose of existence, death, suffering, self-fulfillment, happiness, responsibility for the future, respect for life – especially human – from conception to natural death). The work of Spaemann inspires, motivates, orientates, empowers, strengthens and encourages the virtue of hope

The article discusses the moral aspect of the political activity as taught by Joseph Ratzinger / Benedict XVI. The German Pontiff follows the teachings of his predecessors, emphasising the importance of the cooperation between reason and faith and showing the positive role of religion in the state. The acceptance of Christian moral principles determines the human character of social structures. Politics, conceived as a struggle for power, is the domain of the lay faithful. Ratzinger's theology assumes the openness of reason to faith in order to achieve a more holistic view of reality, as well as to select the most appropriate means to fulfil the principles of the common good which is, after all, the raison d'être of the state as a political community. Within the framework of policy, the Logos, i.e. the eternal will of God that constitutes the framework for the integral progress, can be put into practice. Moral rationalism – when implemented on an unchanging ethical foundation – protects the social and the political systems from the domination of legal positivism, the deliberate elimination of religion from the public sphere and the predominance of ideologies that generate reductionist concepts of the human being and the world. The above-mentioned factors undermine the holistic nature of the natural law as the basis for values such as justice and peace which determine the moral foundation of the development-oriented political activity.

The author of the article tried to show – based on the speeches of Benedict XVI to Europeans – what the Christianity, especially the Catholic Church, has brought to the European civilization. Well, the Christianity brought the monotheistic religion – the revealed faith in God in the Trinity of Persons. It cleansed of polytheism and idolatry; it brought rational religion and freed from irrational myths and superstitions; it brought a culture of word, and, over the centuries, it eliminated illiteracy; it introduced the ethos of work, musical culture and a number of its other kinds, the works of charity. It shaped the identity of nations and the identity of Europe. The author also presents the Pope’s assessment of the contemporary political, social and ideological situation in Europe. He pointed out that the union of Europe ensures peace on the continent and in the world, as well as economic and civilization development. This union is to lead, according to the original assumptions, to unity, not to uniformity; wholesome secularism must respect the autonomy of the  Church. The respect of universal and Christian values is the base of a successful future. Christianity serves “purification of the reason”, contributes to the formation of conscience and an integral humanism. Worshiping God means caring for man.

Chrześcijaństwo służy bowiem  „oczyszczaniu rozumu”, przyczynia się do formowania sumień i kształtowania humanizmu integralnego, a cześć oddawana Bogu oznacza zarazem troskę o człowieka.

During the fourth pilgrimage to Poland in 1991, John Paul II based his teaching on the Decalogue, on the “ten simple words”. In his homily delivered in Koszalin, he referred to the first commandment that provides the foundations to understand all of them. God who presents the Decalogue to His people, is the same God who liberated them from Egypt. Therefore, Decalogue cannot limit human freedom, on the contrary, it helps the people to grow strong. The One who speaks to Moses on the Mount Sinai is God the Father who – as revealed in the New Testament – generates the Son from Eternity and sends us the Spirit. Thus, we could say that the Trinitarian dimension does not weaken the invocation: “You shall have no other gods before me”, but it enlightens and strengthens it. Decalogue allures not only to its goodness and truth, but also to its beauty. The first commandment presents the initial confrontation with the world which, in the name of deceptive humanism, places a human being before God. This false humanism will manifest itself in all sorts of ideologies. In the twentieth century it was Nazism, but above all, it was Communism, while today they are different versions of neo-Marxism that especially attack the biblical anthropology, closely related to the first commandment.
