The concept of ecosystems services has become an important model for linking the functions of ecosystems to human welfare. The aim of this paper is to identify ecosystem services generated by green areas within the urban area, classify and value them. "Ecosystem services" refers to components of nature, directly enjoyed, consumed, or used to yield human well-being (Boyd, Banzhaf 2007). This definition advances the ability to use ecosystem services as a practical measurement tool.

Lake ecosystems provide a number of services for socio-economic systems; recreational services are among them. Many different conditions affect the ability to use these services by society, which can be distinguished as natural or anthropogenic conditions. Supporting natural conditions through actions taken by a socio-economic system shapes the size and structure of the demand for the provision of recreational services.

Modeling ecosystem services (ES) is an essential tool for the development of strategies that will ensure their future supply, provision and quantification. Given the rapid development in this area of research, a review of the different approaches used to model ES was performed, using an analytical framework based on five criteria for comparing the existing methodological approaches: the types of ES, availability of data sources, spatial scale, types of models used and the possible outcomes of the models. Regulating services were the most commonly modeled, followed by provisioning, cultural, and supporting services. The most frequently used data for modeling were secondary data (already available from scientific literature or data banks). Most studies were performed at the regional or at a global scale. Mechinicist models, based on state and flow equations, were the most commonly used method, but the survey showed a relatively homogeneous distribution of all the identified types of modeling. The synthesis reveals that the majority of studies are based on secondary data, applied at broad scales, without validation techniques, similar to the existing information regarding the mapping of ESs.

Collecting opinions regarding environmental management is essential, particularly in urban areas where space is limited, and interests often collide. However, the impact of the conditions in which the research is conducted on opinions and preferences elicited via surveys and interviews about the environment is usually taken for granted. The recent development of computer-aided survey methods allows a simulation of an environment, which can create an artificial environment for interviews. Therefore, examining whether direct access to the environment impacts opinions and preferences becomes a significant issue when considering environmental policies and management design and execution. This study examines whether the location of an interview, indoors or outdoors (in the vicinity of trees), influences the opinion on the ecosystem services (ES) trees provide. A quasi-experimental method with a map-aided computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI) survey in two Polish cities, indoors and outdoors, in the vicinity of trees, shows that respondents’ location did not significantly affect the opinion on the ES provided by trees. However, on average, respondents answering the survey inside buildings marked more trees on a map than those answering outside. We argue that although an interview location does not have a significant impact on the results, from the perspective of various stakeholder groups in participatory processes, the convenience of place is more important than the character of the place (i.e., in the vicinity of trees) as long as the survey method is mediated by a virtual representation of the subject of the study.

The purpose of this study is to introduce the ‘ecosystem services’ concept from the legal perspective, which so far has not attracted as much attention in the Polish scientific community as analyses focused on natural and economic aspects. The concept is strongly promoted as a part of biodiversity and water protection measures which are issues of key importance for the agriculture. This means the agriculture sector will be the first to be affected by legal loopholes in this area. The analysis includes a general attempt to identify the legal grounds for the term and concept of ‘ecosystem services’ as well as the assessment of the current state of the Polish legislator’s works on this matter. At the same time, a confrontation of this concept’s theoretical grounds with the underpinning values of environmental law (especially with the ‘polluter pays’ principle) allows to detail the part of this concept (positive externalities of ecosystem services and PES) which currently poses a real challenge for the Polish legislator and requires a redefinition of current directions for specifying the environmental rights and obligations.

The purpose of the article is to search for legal instruments for compensation for environmental damage caused to Ukraine because of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation (RF). In addition, the aim is to present prospects for the use of ecosystem services (ES) in the assessment of environmental damage, as well as the application of the Costanza methodology for ES assessment. Methods of compensation for losses that can be applied in the near future have been analyzed. The use of ES can significantly increase the amount of reparations that the RF will have to pay Ukraine in the future for environmental damage. This is exemplified with an assessment of the damage that the RF has caused to forest and agrarian ecosystems. Assessing ES in wartime conditions is complicated by the lack of access to the occupied territories. The article shows the prospects of assessing ES losses in the conditions of Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Current recommendations for shaping greenery in the city refer to the 3-30-300 rule, i.e. providing residents of a residential building with a view of trees, direct proximity to greenery at the place of residence and pedestrian access to a high-quality public park or other area. Many cities implement this rule as part of local greening programmes. The authors analyse the structure of green areas in the city of Wolsztyn, assessing it in the context of the 3-30-300 rule. As a result, they identify areas requiring better access to greenery and propose specific actions to increase the availability of greenery within the city. The recommendations formulated can improve residents’ quality of life and the urban environment.

Research background: The services provided by ecosystems are the main support for human populations and for the development of any type of activity. Today, the provision of these services is under threat. The economic valuation of ecosystem services is vital to design appropriate policies, define strategies and manage ecosystems. Purpose of the article: The objective of this study is to analyse the evolution of research on the economic valuation of ecosystem services over the last two decades. More specifically, it aims firstly to identify the main agents driving research and, secondly, it seeks to synthesize in a single document the relevant information on the main economic valuation methods, relating them to the categories of services, ecosystems and regions where they have been employed. Methods: A quantitative review was first carried out through a bibliometric analysis to identify the main drivers of this line of research and its development trends. Secondly, a qualitative review was conducted through a systematic review focusing on the most commonly used valuation techniques in relation to the characteristics of the service, the geographical scope and the ecosystem analysed. Findings & value added: The main novelty of this work, compared to previous literature, is that the relationship between the study area, the type of ecosystem, the category of service and the economic valuation methodology are analysed for the first time. The results highlight the need to continue expanding knowledge in relation to the temporal and spatial scale in the economic value of ecosystem services, the subjective nature of the estimates and the heterogeneity between the different social sectors with respect to the benefit obtained.

This study aims to evaluate land use and land cover (LULC) changes and associated impacts in the landscape structure and ecosystem services (ES) value in Lousã municipality, in Central Portugal. The results show that significant changes in LULC were recorded over the study period (1974–2018). Agricultural abandonment, expansion of woodland due to the promotion of the eucalyptus (EU) monoculture (chiefly Eucalyptus globulus), the invasion of exotic species (mainly Acacia dealbata) and the increase of built-up areas are the most significant changes that have shaped the landscapes of the study area. The analysis also revealed that the mean patch size has decreased whereas the number of patches increased. The results showed that although the EU and deciduous forest (DF) increased the ES value, the overall total ES value fell around 10% between 1974 and 2018, mainly due to the decrease in the supply of agricultural goods. Studies of this kind on local rural landscapes are vital when it comes to devising appropriate land management policies for the landscape level by considering the interaction between each element for sustainable development.

Środowisko dostarcza człowiekowi wiele dóbr i usług. Świadczenia te można kwalifikować do wszystkich typów usług środowiskowych, tj. zaopatrzeniowych, regulacyjnych, wspomagających i kulturowych. Produkty pszczele mieszczą się głównie w typie usług zaopatrzeniowych, z kolei usługi zapylania, apiterapii, apiturystyki i bioindykacji można powiązać z każdym z typów usług środowiskowych.

The environment provides many goods and services to people. Ecosystem services are an important element of agriculture, which is their recipient, but also the creator. Beekeeping has a special role in agriculture, providing bee products and pollinating plants. The aim of the paper is to identify ecosystem services produced by beekeeping and their location in particular types of these services. Research results indicate a wide range of goods and services provided by beekeeping. These benefits can be qualified for all types of ecosystem services, i.e. procurement, regulatory, support and cultural services. Bee products are mainly in the type of procurement services, while pollination, apitherapy, apitung and bioindication services can be associated with each type of ecosystem services. Individual goods and services provided by beekeeping, due to their wide impact or use, can be qualified for different types of environmental services.

Since geodiversity encompasses a broad spectrum of the earth’s natural features and provides essential ecosystem services, it plays a critical role in environmental conservation, cultural heritage enhancement, and sustainable development of the territory. This paper presents possible geodiversity actions (use of digital knowledge, geosite inventory, sustainable geotourism, and legislative recognition) through global, regional, and local examples: a series of research and public engagement initiatives, including the themes of the International Geodiversity Day (IGD), a UNESCO celebration aimed at fostering public awareness of the contribution of abiotic nature to daily life and environmental stability. The paper uses a case study approach to present a virtuous circle of geodiversity model that shows how geodiversity can be used to improve environmental stewardship, sustainable resource use, and cultural identity. The interdependences of geological conservation, ecosystem services, and public education in meeting the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations are stressed by this model. They underscore the importance of getting public and policy support from which geodiversity benefits can be sustained and suggest strategies for integrating geological diversity into conservation practice. Geodiversity is found to be a critical natural resource and a driver of sustainable development, thus serving communities, economies, and ecosystems.

There are a number of similarities between environmental and climate protection legislation, but these two areas also have their own objectives. Even so, these objectives are similar and there are interdependencies and synergies between them, and in some cases the measures to achieve them compete. Efforts to achieve climate goals in both greenhouse gas reduction and climate change adaptation directly benefit from the existence and quality of environmental components – however, some climate measures conflict with environmental protection. In the present paper, I address the competing public interests in the two areas concerned and raise their possible symbiosis. Furthermore, I discuss the concept of public interest, or the prevailing public interest, in using renewable energy source, in connection with the regulations currently under discussion at the EU level.

Relations between the functioning and benefits of ecosystems to society was considered since the 70s. Conducted research and analysis in this area, as well as the development and refinement of methods for estimating the economic value of ecosystem services are the cause of changes in attitudes among decision-makers and politicians. In recent years, there is an increase of environmental awareness especially in developed countries, which meant that more often, both in scientific papers and documents relating to the development of urban areas, much attention is paid to the ecosystems services. The condition of cities depends on a healthy natural environment, which produces a number of benefits, and healthy ecosystems form the basis for sustainable urban development as a positive impact on human well-being and economic activity. The aim of this article is to present the current state of knowledge on the theoretical aspects of the concept of ecosystem services and their importance for sustainable urban development. Particular attention was paid to the activities undertaken by municipalities in this regard, inter alia, the problem of urban planning in this behavior: both the quantity and quality of green areas and the functioning of aquatic ecosystems and natural water retention.

Small semi-natural habitats, especially mid-field trees, play a significant roles in the agricultural landscape. One of them is natural pest control. This function is because tree plantings are the habitat of organisms that are natural enemies of crop pests, i.a., predatory insects and parasitoids. In intensively managed agricultural landscapes, plant protection relies heavily on chemicals, increasing production costs and environmental pollution. Strengthening natural pest control can help improve food security while reducing pressure on biodiversity and the environment. At the same time, midfield trees increase the effectiveness of other services, such as pollination or climate regulation. There have been significant advances in mapping ecosystem services recently, but natural pest control is one of the least explored topics. This study aims to present the spatial variability of the potential and demand for this service, pointing to those parts of Poland where the need to protect mid-field trees is greatest. A landscape approach was applied, taking into account not only the share of shelterbelts but also the size of the patches, their shape, and the size of the ecotone zone. The results and the methodology developed here can be used to formulate policies and strategies aimed at increasing biodiversity and ecosystem services. This research can also be the basis for activities supporting sustainable agriculture, e.g., the appropriate allocation of funds from the Rural Development Program.
