Popular media culture has been a vital resource through which youth generations have defined themselves, their desires, and their hopes and dreams. This continues to be reflected in the dynamic ways that the youth are using digital media to shape their everyday lives. As a result, young people are constantly creative; they acquire new skills and make up groups and communities in the media culture. The purpose of the reflections in the article is a look at the media practices of young people and an attempt to find an answer to the question how the young generation uses social media for communication and participation in culture and how social media change media culture.
Representative surveys, carried out by the Central Statistical Office reveal how low is in Poland the scale of participation in culture: expenses connected with culture represent about 3% of household expenditure, and 1/3 of this amount is spent on television. Almost half of householders didn’t buy a book in year, 60% of Poles didn’t go to the cinema and 90% didn’t go to the theatre. In the same time, participation in culture is shown as a condition for social and economic development. The gap between absence of participation in culture and promoting culture is depicted in more detail in terms of statistics illustrating the scale of absence and in diagnosis of barriers. But this analysis leads to next questions – on the one hand about the apparent shallowness of these barriers, on the other – about the need for different way of task posed questions, new methods which break with the traditional questions about the museum visit or buying newspapers. As the culture changes, we should change tools of researching culture. Perhaps the picture will continue to indicate the dominance of absence, but maybe will penetrate beyond the enigmatic „I did not feel the need” to participate.
The team of the Research Laboratory of the Polish Measurement of Attitudes and Values (PPPiW) already for the fourth time measured the participation in the European Night of Museums in Warsaw. The research was conducted during the night of 16th to 17th of May 2015. The sample was N = 1,102 respondents varied in terms of gender, age, education, place of residence and income. 20 museums, located in different districts, were selected for the research, which enabled the spatial stratification of the sample. The research commentary refers to the following issues of communing with culture: the frequency of reaching for the sources of knowledge about it, the frequency of visiting facilities being its vehicle, and readership. At the same time, it needs to be said that participation in culture refers mainly to its passive consumption, namely by means of the cinema and television. Therefore, the source of knowledge about art lies in the image which supersedes the traditional role of text. Participation in culture becomes a characteristic feature of more and more narrow, elite social group. Participation in high culture to a greater and greater extent becomes the measure of social distances. It leads to the deepening of socio-cultural distances between the groups with higher positions and less educated social groups, also between the residents of cities and villages.
The scope of this paper is to conceptualise a data-based research framework for the role of creative networks in cultural exchange. Participation in culture measured as audience per 1000 residents and expenditures on culture-related activities were analysed in relation to such territorial assets as accessibility to creative infrastructure, the economic status of residents, the governance networks of civil society, and cultural capital. The results indicate how accessibility, governance networks, and cultural capital contribute to participation measured via audience indicators while a low poverty rate has explanatory value with respect to expenditures on culture.
The article focuses on participation in local culture from a lesser-studied perspective of foreign nationals residing in Polish cities, drawing on a case study of Kraków. In the first part of the article, the authors outline the context of the migration transition in Poland, meaning the passage between a country of net emigration towards a country of net immigration, which has dynamically changed the urban landscape. Next, the results of an exploratory study on foreign residents’ attitudes and experiences of culture in the public sphere in Kraków are presented, which are the testing ground for the analysis of the changing nature of engagement at the local level. This study points to several conclusions for further analysis, namely the overwhelmingly positive evaluation of the cultural sphere by foreign nationals, the potential for social anchoring through this sphere, and the new narratives of local identity that are emerging as a result.
The paper contains the demand side of the market for cultural goods and services, with a focus on performing arts especially the analysis of their consumption from the demand theory, which attempts to explain the motives and consequences of consumers’ decisions. The consumption of cultural goods and services is determined by many factors, and their identification is the purpose of this study. Among them there are social determinants, including education and age of consumers and economic, such as price and income. The starting point for the analysis is fact that cultural goods and services in the economy are normal goods, so the demand for them increases with increasing consumer income and decreases with the demand decrease. They are also luxury goods, which means they are purchased only when the amount of income will satisfy customers’ basic needs. The paper contains also review of results of research conducted by foreign authors to demand determinants for cultural goods and services. Selected determinants are presented using statistical data on participation in culture of citizens of the European Union. However it was not possible to present an insightful analyzed of determinants and their dynamics because of limited availability of data.
In the field of Polish humanist studies, the category of “participation in culture” has been broadly examined. Nowadays there are more frequent voices announcing “the end of participation culture”, and that it is ahighly exploited research category. Instead, the academics underline the dynamic character of changes in modern culture and the necessity to attract attention to its “active” aspect, underlining the self-agency of subjects. Thus in the area of culture studies, we observe an interest in performative perspective. In Polish humanist studies Isearch for such participation concepts, which go beyond the field related to arts (establishing relation work of art — recipient) and activist engagement (indicating f.i. resistance, or social movements). Iam particularly interested in theoretical proposals, related to the category of everyday life, social and cultural practices, or even the category of praxis. While recalling this category Iinquire, whether performative perspective can be inspiring and helpful for redefining and modernizing the category of participation in culture.
The article presents a conceptual basis of the research project: “Visual organization of the space of the town: continuity, interpretation, historic and cultural dimensions”. S. Avanesov, who is the author of this project, starts from rethinking the metaphysic idea of human existence. It is needed for taking into account 1. existential status of the visual and 2. the task of the project: describing forms of visual activity and organization of the space of the city. Variability of such space is showed using the example of a Siberian town Tomsk and provides a typological proposal. The authors stress that visual activity in creating and transforming space can be treated as inhabitants’ participation in culture. Photographing city is a good case to demonstrate how the way of perception and visual construction of urban landscape meet and interfere.
The paper presents the results of research conducted among parents of children attending music school. Its aim was to phenomenographically reconstruct the ways of conceptualising participation in musical culture. The analysis of the collected research material allowed for the identification of a number of categories indicating the individual and social contexts of this participation. The issues related to cultural competences, different ways of perceiving the music by the surveyed persons are of particular interest. The contexts relating to the family, its mechanisms and establishment of family ties also deserve special attention.
W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę ukazania edukacyjnych aspektów on-linowego uczestnictwa w kulturze osób dorosłych, które w okresie pandemii COVID-19 uległy wyraźnemu wzmocnieniu. W pierwszej części zaprezentowano najważniejsze trudności i ograniczenia w funkcjonowaniu sektora kultury w pierw- szym okresie lockdownu.

In this article, we attempt to show how the online participation in the culture influenced the adult education in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. The first part presents the most important difficulties and limitations in the functioning of the cultural sector in the first period of the lock-down. Then, we presented phenomena that shaped participation in culture before the pandemic, and which were intensified during the crisis. We also characterised the main directions of changes that may take place in the functioning of cultural institutions, in relation to the experience gained from working with recipients in virtual reality.
This paper contains a sociological analysis of an artistic project ‘Śródka Remix’ created by Marta Żakowska and realised during Poznan Malta Festival in 2011 (as a part of the New Situations project). During this project the artist and inhabitants of the Poznan district ofS´ ro´dka designed, prepared and placed in public space objects of so-called small architecture, created out of recycled furniture. Using Marek Krajewski’s concept of participation in culture and taking into account the context of the revitalisation of Śródka, the paper focuses on the mechanisms through which social bonds and relations with objects were created and transformed during the project. On the one hand this artistic intervention met the expectations of inhabitants regarding public space and many people participated in the project. On the other hand, the project revealed the existing social conflicts.

W ramach podjętych wówczas działań artystka oraz mieszkańcy poznańskiej dzielnicy Śródka zaprojektowali, wykonali i umieścili w przestrzeni miejskiej elementy tzw. małej architektury, powstałej w efekcie recyklingu domowych mebli.
Culture occupies an inferior place in the theoretical and practical interests of social policy. Culture is a difficult concept to define. It constantly expands its range, blurring its boundaries. This is reflected in the progressive aesthetisation (culturalisation) reality and the increased role of an experience economy. Culture becomes an iconosphere (the realm of signs). The proof of these problems with the conceptualisation of culture are unsuccessful attempts of defining creative industries. In this situation, the only useful definition of culture is an anthropological definition, which is very general and descriptive. Therefore what is needed in social policy is a revision of the standard approach to the phenomenon of participation in culture, where ‘culture’ is usually limited to the realm of art, and ‘participation’ is usually limited to specific behaviours in the area of artistic institutions.

The author of the reviewed book for the first time shows how and why film preferences of the inhabitants of Breslau in the years 1896–1932 and 1933–1945 differed in relation to the choices of cinema audiences in other European cities during the same period. He uses the POPSTAT statistical method proposed for this purpose by the German researcher Joseph Potter. He also uses the scientific ideas of „attraction cinema” developed by André Gaudreault. He bases his research on analyzing film success rankings and to measure viewer preferences.
The article is an attempt to present the essence of participating in culture, as well as the social and educational qualities thereof, in the theories of selected pedagogues and sociologists. Referring to these considerations, I shall describe the possibilities of intensifying the social education of people of diverse backgrounds by means of their participation in group forms of contact with music. Having presented the hitherto unappreciated role of collective musical activities in building positive interpersonal relations, both in a historical, as well as a modern approach, I shall encourage to undertake them as an interesting form of active participation in culture and a creative way of spending free time.

Ukazując w aspekcie historycznym i współczesnym niedocenianą dotąd rolę muzycznej działalności zespołowej w budowaniu pozytywnych relacji międzyludzkich, zachęcę do podjęcia jej jako interesującej formy aktywnego uczestnictwa w kulturze i twórczego spędzania wolnego czasu.
W artykule zweryfikowano i pogłębiono tezy na temat uczestnictwa w kulturze w małych i średnich miastach postawione w trakcie ogólnopolskich, eksploracyjnych analiz etnograficznych. Źródłem danych służących weryfikacji są wyniki badań przeprowadzonych w sześciu miejscowościach (Dobrzyniu, Obrzycku, Rawiczu, Ostródzie, Grudziądzu i Elblągu) w 2017 roku. Teoretyczną podstawę badań i analiz stanowi „postrozszerzeniowa” koncepcja kultury – nowa propozycja konceptualizacji uczestnictwa w kulturze. W badaniu potwierdzono tezy mówiące o niewielkim zainteresowaniu większości mieszkańców uczestnictwem w kulturze instytucjonalnej, wyspowym charakterze aktywności elit, „relacjogennej” funkcji uczestnictwa w kulturze, wciąż istotnej roli telewizji i niskich wskaźnikach czytelnictwa.

The article develops the research on cultural participation in small and medium sized towns in Poland by extending and verifying the already available ethnographic explorations that had been carried out by Wojciech Burszta, Izabella Bukraba-Rylska and others. The comparative data used in this article were gathered in six Polish towns and cities (Dobrzyń, Obrzyck, Rawicz, Ostróda, Grudziądz and Elbląg) in 2017. The “post-extended” concept of cultural participation is employed as a theoretical framework in the study: it is a new proposal that conceptualizes cultural practices. Our research has proven that the thesis concerning institutional participation in culture is still valid: among our research participants, there is little interest in institutionalized cultural practices. We have also found that “relational” function of participation in culture continues to be significant, people continue ascribing an important role to television viewing, while the readership rates are continuously low. It has been discovered that the new digital forms of access have not yet changed cultural practices in non-metropolitan areas. In addition, the article presents the first segmentation of people participating in culture in small and medium sized towns.
Individuals with intellectual disability are frequently victims discriminating behaviour. It is often discrimination due to the level of revealed abilities and the peculiarity of establishing individual contacts. The phenomenon of discrimination is especially harmful and dangerous if it is preferred by culture and art workers, organizers of cultural events and therapists. Experiencing any discriminating attitudes towards the forms of activity in culture taken by individuals with intellectual disability is especially painful for them. The author's research carried out with the diagnostic survey method among 60 parents and 115 students confirmed the occurrence of the phenomenon of discrimination towards individuals with intellectual disability in places where culture and art are spread. The properties describing the phenomenon of discrimination appeared essential primarily at the stage of critical understating the careers of those participants in culture and their effective adaptation including them in their environment, also the creative one.

Przeprowadzone badania własne metodą sondażu diagnostycznego wśród 60 rodziców oraz 115 studentów potwierdziły występowanie zjawiska dyskryminacji w stosunku do osób z niepełnosprawnością intelektualną w miejscach upowszechniania kultury i sztuki.
The main aim of this article is a draft of so-called psychology of cultural participation by Krystyna Zamiara, which is based on a sample of overcoming a cognitive perspective typical of psychological research participation of individuals in a culture and an extremely anti-individualistic, anti-psychologist perspective typical of cultural sciences, represented in this article by social-regulational concept of culture by Jerzy Kmita. As a result of overcoming limitations deriving from the two extreme points of view, would become possible to determine an area of effective cooperation between them in the research of cultural participation.
We attempt to show how class position, cultural capital, and social class of parents affects parenting patterns. The findings are based on data from a nationwide survey conducted in 2019. Our analysis shows that having higher cultural capital in terms of going to the opera, philharmonic hall, as well as playing sports or eating at restaurants favours reading books to children, going to the theatre with them, and going to classical music concerts. In a similar direction affect education and class position of the parents: an increase in education and originating from specialists (intelligentsia) are associated with some increase in these parenting practices. A comparison of both parents' activities shows a slightly greater role for mothers than for fathers with respect to reading books and educating children, although fathers are not inferior to mothers in going with their children to the theatre and music concerts. These findings may be seen as an element of the reproduction of class barriers due to the transmission of cultural practices to children that affect their life chances. They also support hypothesis of homology, that is, similarity in the patterns of relationships between class position and childrearing practices.

Metody i materiały. Badania przeprowadzono na próbie 1270 osób w wieku 18-37 lat. Do oceny struktury narzędzia wykorzystano eksploracyjną i konformacyjną analizę czynnikową. Niezależnie od powyższego wykorzystano analizę regresji czynnikowej do weryfikacji związku podskal kwestionariusza ze zdolnością do pozytywnej adaptacji (resilience-trait). Wyniki i wnioski. W świetle przeprowadzonych badań wyekstrahowano trzy podskale. Pierwszą jest pozytywny klimat relacji wychowawczej w rodzinie (łączącą aspekt autoratywnego wychowania i resiliencji systemu rodzinnego). Dwie dodatkowe podskale wyodrębnione w analizach to orientacja rodziców na sukces edukacyjny dziecka i na promowanie uczestnictwa dziecka w kulturze wyższej. Struktura powyższa ujawniła się w eksploracyjnej analizie czynnikowej i została zweryfikowana w konfirmacyjnej analizie czynnikowej. Analizy regresji czynnikowej pozwoliły ustalić występowanie istotnych efektów interakcyjnych pomiędzy poszczególnymi podskalami narzędzia a poziomem resilience. Kombinacje wysokich wyników poszczególnych podskal prowadziły do najwyższych wskaźników zdolności pozytywnej adaptacji u osób badanych. Powyższe rezultaty pozwalają pozytywnie ocenić trafność pomiaru funkcjonalności wychowawczej rodziny zastosowanym narzędziem badawczym. W toku dalszych badań należałoby potwierdzić strukturę narzędzia w losowo dobranych próbach zróżnicowanych wiekowo i kulturowo. Należałoby również więcej uwagi poświęcić potwierdzeniu trafności pomiaru zaprojektowanym narzędziem.

Aim. The aim of the analyses carried out was to test the structure of the new, extended version of the tool to measure the educational functionality of the generational family. The modification of the tool consisted of the addition of two new subscales measuring the promotion of educational success and cultural participation in the generational family to the version developed previously. Methods and materials. The research was conducted on a sample of 1, 270 individuals aged 18–37 years. Exploratory and confirmational factor analysis was used to assess the structure of the tool. Independently of the above, factorial regression analysis was used to verify the association of the questionnaire subscales with the ability to adapt positively (resilience-trait). Results and conclusion. In light of the research, three subscales were extracted. The first is the positive climate of the parenting relationship in the family (combining the aspect of authoritative parenting and the resilience of the family system). Two additional subscales extracted in the analyses were the parents’ orientation towards the child’s educational success and towards promoting the child’s participation in high culture. The above structure was revealed in exploratory factor analysis and was verified in confirmatory factor analysis. Factorial regression analyses established the presence of significant interaction effects between individual subscales of the tool and the level of trait resilience. Combinations of high scores on individual subscales led to the highest rates of positive adaptability in the subjects.

The research on workers’ culture carried out in Poland from the 1960s to the late 1980s has been recognised in this article as a failure. The author discusses the numerous attempts to conceptualise research programmes and their actual implementation in the fields of sociology, anthropology and the emerging cultural studies. She looks for the sources of their failure, reflecting on its nature and possible causes. She asks whether the failure of the research on workers’ culture was not due to the scepticism of the researchers themselves, who might have overlooked important attempts at demonstrating self-awareness and pro-active attitude on the part of the workers, treating them as politically manipulated and therefore inauthentic. She raises the question about both ideological and methodological reasons behind this stance, the latter having to do with a clash between quantitative research and humanistic orientation. She calls for “preposterous” research (as proposed by Mieke Bal) to be undertaken, which would give a different interpretation of the workers’ various cultural initiatives from today’s perspective. Perhaps this would inspire the creation of a counter-history of workers’ culture.
