Literary translation has played a very important role in Poland since the middle ages, for it contributed to the development of the language itself as well as literature written originally in Polish. New trends from abroad were often transmitted via translation and helped shape and stimulate Polish literature. No wonder that numerous books and articles have been devoted to various aspects of literary translation. However, so far no complex and systematic research has been carried out in Poland. The author of the article stresses the need for a comprehensive publication which could be partly modelled on the five volume Oxford History of Literary Translation in English that was launched in 2005. A prospective history of literary translation in Polish could be augmented with a series of maps which would show the shifting position of various translated literatures within the corpus of Polish literature, based on the concept of literary polisystem developed by Itamar Even-Zohar.
