The article is devoted to the historical, literary and intertextual connections between Dostoyevsky’s novella The Double and Nikolai Akhsharumov’s novella of the same title. The research indicates that the two writers’ texts are linked by the dominant of psychological analysis, the theme of duality and the topos of St. Petersburg. However, the protagonists themselves, their doubles and the relationships between them are diametrically opposite in the works of Dostoevsky and Akhsharumov. This demonstrates the complex laws of literary evolution, which encompass not only the influence of a predecessor, but also taking issue with him.

В статье рассматриваются историко-литературные и интертекстуальные связи повести Ф. М. Достоевского Двойник и повести Н. Д. Ахшарумова с аналогичным названием. Как показывает проведенные исследование, писателей сближает доминанта психологического анализа, тема двойничества и топос Петербурга. Однако как сами герои, так и их двойники, отношения между ними у Достоевского и Ахшарумова являются прямо противоположными. Это свидетельствует о сложных законах литературной эволюции, включающей в себя не только момент влияния предшественника, но и полемику с ним.

The article is devoted to two authors’ commentaries on their own works: Ivan Turgenev’s – on his novel Fathers and Sons and Ivan Goncharov’s concerning The Precipice. Both writers provided explanations in view of the fact that their works continued to arouse controversy long after they had been published. The crucial issue for critics as well as for the readership was the authors’ attitude to their nihilist characters, Evgeny Bazarov and Mark Volokhov respectively. When explaining his position, either author talks about the novel’s conception, reconstructs the process of creation, living through it again; at the same time, they already look at their creations from a distance. The clarifications offered by Turgenev and Goncharov “outside” the literary text proper are revealing in terms of which aspects of the interpretative potential were particularly important for them, how well these correlate with what is said in the literary work itself and what is “heard” by the readership.

Статья посвящена писательскому комментарию к своим произведениям: И. С. Тургенева – к роману Отцы и дети, И. А. Гончарова – к роману Обрыв. Оба автора выступили с пояснениями к произведениям, написанным значительно раньше, ибо спор о них продолжался и десятилетие спустя. Основные вопросы критиков и читателей были связаны с авторским отношением к герою-нигилисту: Евгению Базарову и Марку Волохову. Объясняя свою позицию, каждый писатель говорит о замысле романа, реконструирует процесс создания произведения, заново переживая его; и в то же время смотрит на созданный им текст уже со стороны. Попытка Тургенева и Гончарова объясниться с критиком и читателем «вне текста» дает возможность увидеть, какие потенциалы смысла оказываются для них наиболее важными, как соотносится это с тем, что «сказано» в самом произведении и что является «услышанным» читателем.

The artistic dominant of the essay by I.S. Turgenev is to be found in the confessional nature of the author's lyrical and philosophical thoughts. The artist removes the keyword “note” from the title of the work and, instead, repeats it in the text. The work expresses the tragic worldview of the hero, who keenly felt the powerlessness of humanity and the values it created in relation to the vastness of the universe and the power of nature. The obvious subjectivity of the essay, however, does not allow us to identify the writer and the narrator, because Turgenev manages to maintain the position of “out–of–place” (M. Bakhtin) in relation to his hero.
