For the last twenty-five years Polish agriculture has been functioning in free market conditions. During this time some specific factors occurred which force the change of an economic strategy of this sector. Transition to market economy caused incomplete exploitation of arable land and rural labor force. It created new opportunities for agricultural sector such as organic food production, agritourism, sustainable agriculture, and the generation of the energy and fuel from renewable sources. These are the new chances for Polish agriculture.

In the article the autor presented some problems concerning the prospects of supplying electric and heat energy from domestic sources. Special attention was drawn to the hopes for the explorationand extraction of shale gas deposits in Poland. The author also discussed the prospects of commercial exploitation of renewable sources of energy (water, wind, biomass) and the use of biofluids in motor fuels.
