In the era of globalisation, the notion of multiculturalism is encountered more and more often. Today, we often hear about migrations, as well as the functioning of an ethnic or racial diversified population within one territory. However, these are not the only determinants of a multicultural society. Nevertheless, in order to comprehend what multiculturalism really is, the identification of this notion and its essence should be carried out. This issues are particularly interesting due to the fact that there are more and more societies in which diversity has become widespread. This publication is an attempt to explain the concept of multiculturalism and present its essence in the contemporary world
