Valentin Rasputin’s fiction abounds in expressive, detailed descriptions of Siberian nature which provide rich material for the study of various forms of perception. By means of words the writer paints pictures of vast Siberian landscapes as well as meticulous descriptions of local animals and plants. Additionally, he tries to recreate and convey in writing the smells and sounds of his beloved places. An important role in Valentin Rasputin’s works is played by his protagonists who are shown in dramatic moments in their lives, e.g. in the face of death, disease or an inevitable tragedy. It is in those moments that they manifest perception abilities which go beyond the normal capacity of the five senses. This is likely to be possible for them due to connections with the extrasensory world they have developed while living in the ordinary reality. The article discusses the portrayal of the protagonists of the novel In the Last Hour whose perception combines sensory and extrasensory experience.

Attitude towards Animal Slaughter as the Reflection of Human PersonalityPortrayed in Valentine Rasputin’s Works In this article, the focus in placed on the works of Valentine Rasputin in which the attitude that the characters have towards animal slaughter, of which they are both witnesses and executers, constitutes to some extent the determiner of their human quality. Above all, Selling Bear’s Skin and Live and Remember are analyzed. The former deals, on the one hand, with the humanization of an animal that seeks revenge and its consistent pursuit while following the hunter. On the other hand, the evolution of the main character’s attitudes from thoughtless animal slaughter for the sake of material profiteering to the holistic perception of the world and nature, in which every being has the right to live, is observable. The latter work, in turn, depicts just the reverse process, mainly the moral degradation of the human being, evidenced by unwarranted slaughter of a defenseless animal. In the context of the perspective on the sacred dimension of nature, the attitude of the main character might be interpreted as an antireligious mode of human behavior.

As Svetlana Semenova puts it, dreams are „Rasputin’s trademark artistic feature.” Indeed, one can hardly find dreamless pieces in his oeuvre. There are compensation and divination dreams and the protagonists seem to inhabit the middle zone between reality and dreamscape. The dreams involve visitations and translocations to other dimensions. Often they appear alongside the motif of death. The oneiric elements may function as author’s commentary, thus freeing it from the onus of overt moralising. They may determine the purpose of the events constituting the plot and leading up to a tragic finale. Combined with folklore, such as beliefs, superstitions, fortune-telling, and demonology, they put Rasputin among the authors unashamed of their folk roots and deliberately incorporating folk outlook on the world in their writing.

Although the dusk of life is not the focus of Nataliya Tolstoy’s interests, it nevertheless occupies an important place among the issues dealt with by this keen observer and commentator of Soviet and Russian social realities. Assuming that the attitude to the elderly is ameasure of asociety’s humanism, the picture that emerges from Tolstoy’s works speaks very unfavourably of the society to which the writer belonged. The literary portraits of the members of the elder generation reveal the miserable conditions in which they lived in the Russia of the second half of the XX century. Few of her elderly protagonists’ lives are decent — understood here as both material well-being, whereby they can meet their basic needs and sometimes even foster their artistic and intellectual talents, and the access to spiritual goods and their families’ closeness and support, due to which in the twilight of their lives they can feel the sense of life and respect for themselves.
