The communique presents the binding of a printed book published in Cologne in 1568. The lower part of the cover vignette of the book is embellished with a bust of Sigismund August II of Poland embossed in the binding. It should be added at this point that the relevant literature of the subject includes a number of examples of bindings decorated with ornaments that might have been embossed by the same binding device.

Komunikat prezentuje oprawę kolońskiego druku z 1568 roku. Zwierciadło jej dolnej okładziny zdobi wycisk plakiety z popiersiem króla Zygmunta II Augusta. Literatura przedmiotu podaje kilka przykładów egzemplarzy opraw ozdobionych być może za pomocą tego samego narzędzia introligatorskiego.

The article presents deliberations on the beginnings of the Holy Cross church in Gniezno. It discusses the basic source in the studies of the temple’s beginnings, namely the document of the Jerusalempatriarch Monachus of 1198. We may assume that the site was created before 1198. An attempt was made to identify the settlement where the church was erected, presenting the various views expressed in the literature on the subject. It seems that the temple was built in a village which later became a part of the town of Grzybowo. Another issue is the question concerning the church’s founder. It was a “frater Prelaius”, erroneously identified as the canon of Gnieznoand Wrocław, and subsequently the bishop of the Lubuska province,   Przecław. The article also addresses the notion which has appeared in literature, concerning the presence of the Dominicans attached to the temple in the first half of the 13th century.  Finally, the article discusses the dedication of the presented sacred building.

This paper discusses the binding of a set of letters of St. Hieronimus of Strydon, published in three volumes in the printing office of Jan Froben in Basel in 1524. The original owner of the volume was Jan Korzbok Witkowski (d. 1572), whose supralibros indicating the ownership of a book (and bearing his coat of arms and an inscription) was added to the bottom of the front cover page. The original book binding was done in 1527 in the workshop of Maciej of Przasnysz (also known as the Master of Angels Heads). It is a relatively early example of a copy embellished with architectural elements with the motif of a portico with arched tympanum. The binding is a representative example of the book binding technique that shows the influence of Italian book bindery on this particular craft in Poland in the first half of the sixteenth century.

W komunikacie zaprezentowano oprawę zbioru listów św. Hieronima ze Strydonu, wydanych w trzech tomach w 1524 roku w bazylejskiej oficynie Jana Frobena. Pierwotnym posiadaczem woluminu był Jan Korzbok Witkowski (zm. 1572), którego superekslibrisami (herbowym i napisowym) opatrzono jej dolną okładzinę. Oprawę księgi wykonano w 1527 roku w warsztacie Macieja z Przasnysza (Mistrza Główek Anielskich). Jest ona stosunkowo wczesnym przykładem egzemplarza udekorowanego w typie architektonicznym z motywem portalu z tympanonem. Stanowi przy tym reprezentatywny przykład ukazujący wpływ introligatorstwa włoskiego na tę gałąź polskiego rzemiosła w pierwszej połowie XVI wieku.

This article presents the binding of two Kalisz prints from 1620 that has been embellished by the so-called Jagiellonian finishing roll bearing the image of Jan Zamoyski, Lord Grand-Chancellor of the Crown. This particular volume was a gift from Stanisław Zakrzewski (d. 1631) to Andrzej Baranowski (d. 1631), a Gniezno and Cracow canon, Poznań precentor and Łowicz provost. The very image of a Polish magnate, not directly related to the ruling family, demonstrates a particular uniqueness of the implemented tool. It might have been so that the presented copy had been made in an unidentified bindery in Warsaw. It certainly originated between 1620 and 1631, therefore before the date of the prints’ publishing date and the date of the deaths of both Zakrzewski and Baranowski.

W komunikacie zaprezentowano oprawę dwóch kaliskich druków z 1620 roku, którą udekorowanoza pomocą radełka jagiellońskiego z wizerunkiem kanclerza wielkiego koronnego Jana Zamoyskiego. Wolumin ten był darem Stanisława Zakrzewskiego (zm. 1631) dla Andrzeja Baranowskiego (zm. 1631), kanonika gnieźnieńskiego i krakowskiego, kantora poznańskiego, prepozyta łowickiego. Za unikatowością wymienionego narzędzia przemawia obecność wizerunku polskiego możnowładcy, niezwiązanego bezpośrednio z rodziną panującą. Niewykluczone, że przedstawiony egzemplarz został sporządzony w niezidentyfikowanej introligatorni warszawskiej. Powstał on z pewnością w przedziale od 1620 do 1631 roku, a zatem pomiędzy datą wydania druków a datą śmierci Zakrzewskiego i Baranowskiego.

This article discusses the bindings of a set of four books that once formed part of the library of Szymon Rudnicki, the Bishop of Warmia, and are currently kept in the Archdiocesan Archive in Gniezno. Three bindings from this set were made in a single, local bindery workshop. Each of the discussed bindings bears the supralibros indicating the ownership of the book. The article presents two types of the supralibros of the bishop that may indicate the latter’s bibliophile interests.

Artykuł prezentuje oprawy czterech ksiąg należących do biblioteki biskupa warmińskiego Szymona Rudnickiego, które znajdują się obecnie w Archiwum Archidiecezjalnym w Gnieźnie. Trzy spośród nich zostały sporządzone w jednym, lokalnym warsztacie introligatorskim. Na każdej z omawianych opraw znajduje się superekslibris właściwy hierarchy. W tekście przedstawiono dwa rodzaje superekslibrisów duchownego, które mogą wskazywać na jego bibliofilskie zamiłowania.
