The author analyzes discourse devoted to the anniversary of the Baptism of Poland as part of contemporary Polish identity discourse. She notices synonymic names of the historic event, its evaluation, components, elaborations on its meaning, consequences, the relationship between religion and state (nationality), expressing remembrance (beginning, identity), the language and metalanguage of statements. She shows different evaluations of historicity, the sacred, and Europeanism, various attitudes of participants towards the ideas communicated, varied communicative goals, mixing of worldviews, a weakened sense of cultural and national community, and also freedom and sophistication in the use of language.

Autorka analizuje dyskurs poświęcony rocznicy Chrztu Polski jako część współczesnego polskiego dyskursu tożsamościowego. Obserwuje synonimiczne nazwy faktu historycznego, jego wartościowanie, komponenty; pogłębianie sensu: następstwa, relację religijność – państwowość (narodowość); wyrażanie pamięci (początek, tożsamość); język i metajęzyk wypowiedzi. Pokazuje różne wartościowanie historyczności, sakralności i europejskości, różne postawy uczestników wobec przekazywanej idei, niejednolite cele komunikacyjne, uwikłania światopoglądowe, osłabione poczucie wspólnoty kulturowej i narodowej, a zarazem swobodę i wyrafinowane posługiwanie się językiem.

Joanna Sobczykowa’s article deals with Latin as a sacred language in the Polish cultural area in history and today. Sobczykowa outlines the situation in other areas of culture, Semitic or Slavic. She examines the status and functions of liturgical Latin in history and today, by looking at opinions of speakers, theologians, linguists, and philosophers of religion. She also looks at documents in the form of Latin works by medieval Polish preachers and their concern for the understanding of the Latin liturgy by the people. Finally, she shows and stresses the difference between verbal and spiritual understanding present in meditation and that between the tendencies towards sacralization and desacralization.

Artykuł dotyczy łaciny jako języka sakralnego w polskim obszarze kulturowym w historii i współcześnie. Szkicowo potraktowano w nim sytuację w innych obszarach kultury, takich jak semicki czy słowiański. Analizie zostały poddane status i funkcje łacińskiego języka liturgicznego w ujęciu historycznym i współcześnie – w odczuciu mówiących, teologów, językoznawców, filozofów religii. W tekście przedstawiono udokumentowanie łacińskiej twórczości średniowiecznych polskich kaznodziejów i troskę o rozumienie liturgii łacińskiej przez lud. Pokazano również rozpiętość między tendencjami do sakralizacji i desakralizacji, różnicę między rozumieniem werbalnym a duchowym, danym w rozmyślaniu.
