Słowo *svojь jest znane wszystkim językom i dialektom słowiańskim głównie w znaczeniu posesywnym. Subiektem (posesorem) „swojego” może być przede wszystkim człowiek jako osobne indywiduum lub ludzie jako wspólnota różnego typu i wielkości, w bardzo ograniczonym zakresie także zwierzęta, rośliny, zjawiska przyrody, artefakty i byty abstrakcyjne. Zakresy obiektów traktowanych jako „swoje” układają się w koncentrycznne kręgi: w centrum stoi sam człowiek i to, co należy osobiście do niego, przede wszystkim jego własne ciało. Następny krąg to najbliższe otoczenie (swoja rodzina, swój dom), dalej szerszy krąg rodzinny (szersza rodzina, ród), potem krąg sąsiadów, znajomych (swoja ulica, swój krąg przyjaciół, ludzi bliskich „jedinomyszlennikow” itp.), potem krąg krajanów i ziomków, dalej krąg ludzi związanych więzią etniczną, językową, konfesjonalną itp. (swój naród, swój kraj), i na koniec cały rodzaj ludzki, cały świat ziemski w opozycji do „drugiego świata”, świata pozaludzkiego. Te kręgi znaczeń i związanych z nimi wartości są rozpatrywane w artykule na materiale rosyjskim i polskim (leksykalnym i frazeologicznym).

The word *svojь ‘one’s own’ is present in all Slavic languages and dialects mainly with a possessive meaning. The subject (possessor) is above all a person or a community, to a limited degree also animals, plants, natural phenomena, artifacts and abstract entities. The objects treated as “own” constitute concentric circles, with a person in the centre and with what belongs to him or her, starting with the body. The next circle is the nearest environment (the family and the home), then relatives, neighbours, friends, fellow countrymen, people connected through ethnic, religious or linguistic bonds (the nation or country), finally the whole humanity, the earthly world, as opposed to the “other”, supernatural world. The circles of meanings and values are investigated on the basis of Polish and Russian lexical and phraseological data.
