Współczesne społeczeństwa mają dostęp do ogromnej ilości informacji o zróżnicowanym stopniu szczegółowości. Internet jest tego dobrym przykładem – z niemal taką samą łatwością można znaleźć informacje o cząstkach elementarnych, co plotki z życia celebrytów. W obecnych czasach coraz ważniejsza staje się zdolność odróżniania nie tylko ważnych i mniej ważnych informacji, ale być może przede wszystkim umiejętność zdobywania prawdziwych informacji i odrzucania fałszywych.

Contemporary societies have opportunity to gather information at different degree of complexity. Internet is the best example of this phenomenon – one can find details of elementary particles, as easy as celebrity gossip. Today, a proficiency in distingushing important information from trivial one, or rather truth from fiction, is more and more essential.

W dniach 4–6 grudnia 2013 r. we Wrocławiu odbywała się zorganizowana przez Instytut Informacji Naukowej i Bibliotekoznawstwa Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego konferencja naukowa poświęcona roli książki i biblioteki w systemie komunikacji społecznej. Tytuł konferencji jednoznacznie nawiązywał do dzieła Karola Głombiowskiego wydanego w 1980 r., bowiem intencją organizatorów było upamiętnienie setnej rocznicy urodzin Profesora. Obrady stały się okazją do przypomnienia stawianych przez niego pytań oraz zastanowienia się nad miejscem, jakie zajmuje książka wśród współczesnych środków przekazu, a także rozpatrzenia wpływu ewoluujących modeli komunikacyjnych na działalność bibliotek. Artykuł podsumowuje konferencję i prezentuje informacje na temat wygłoszonych w jej ramach wystąpień.

On 4th–6th December, 2013 a conference devoted to the role of books and libraries in the system of social communication was held in Wrocław. The meeting was organized by the Institute of Information and Library Science at University of Wrocław. The conference’s title explicitly refers to the works of Karol Głombiowski published in 1980; it was the organizers’ intention to commemorate the centenary of Professor’s birth. The event was an opportunity to discuss questions asked by Professor Głombiowski on the role the book plays in modern means of communication, as well as examine the impact of evolving communication models of library activities. The article summarizes the conference and presents information on delivered papers.

Communicating a real message by means of media requires participation of both a sender and a recipient. As to the former, the question of a broadly defined responsibility of an author (a reporter, a correspondent, a broadcaster, etc.) for the shape and meaning of delivered messages arises. The shape of news stories, their design and dramaturgy, as well as emotional temperature express in words the thoughts and feelings which accompany experiences brought by surrounding reality, and wider reflection on them. The more authorial approach, the greater chance of resounding and socially valuable effect, namely mutual consensus between people as to the topic discussed. It is important to realize that this is not the media which contact us, but particular people who use them in certain ways as an instrument and multi-purpose means of communication. In public circulation, news stories, as its part, become a form of emotional memory which exists as long as one’s experience and reflection on them lasts. Referring to reality presented by these images is an integral part and aspect of their social existence. Without it, they become an artificially created being which plays a role of phantomatic substitute relation – like the story invented to realistically conceal and replace the existing reality.
