Upon the basis of documents kept in the former Central Party Archive (today: part of the Central State Archive of Bulgaria, with a seat in Sofia), the author presents the last months of the communist system within the so-called external Soviet empire, prior to its fall in the autumn of 1989. Against the backdrop of the economic crisis of the system and the disintegration of the ruling elites, the article considers the economic problems and the socio-political upheaval in Bulgaria (including the Bulgarisation of the Bulgarian Turks, conducted by the Todor Zhivkov team) as well as in other states of the Soviet bloc. The article also depicts the political transformations in Poland, initiated in the spring and autumn of 1989 after the 'Round Table' talks and the partly free parliamentary elections won by 'Solidarity'. The author discusses the outcome of the impact of these events upon the radicalisation of the inner political situation in the states of real socialism and Moscow's attitude to the then political leaders of Bulgaria.
