This paper aims to analyse the forms and functions of the aquatic motif in Saber Assal’s autofictional novel À l’ombre des gouttes. It is a recurring motif that structures the story in various ways: by its regular reappearance (including in the incipit and at the end of the novel), its functionality in the representation of the psychic life of the hero, its symbolic dimension and its emblematic nature for the postcolonial character.

From "Daniel ou Israël" (1987) through "Noir" (2000) and "Une Belge méchante" (2007) and as far as to "La séduction des hommes tristes" (2010) Françoise Lalande’s narratives aspire to give account of the history of human kind, not limited by any specific time or space. In her works, Europe’s history is mixed with history of the world, social with political history, the ancient one describing fate of the Jews with present times, giving account of the events happening before our eyes. The author, convinced of writer’s necessary involvement, reacts to all signs of injustice and brutality so characteristic for the 20th century’s history. Lalande tells us how to live the history playing, according to the author, a key role in creation of our identity. Something that she, as a Jew herself and citizen of the world, is fully aware of.

This article concerns the portrayal of the World War II in the Belgian literature on the basis of Les Jumeaux millénaires Maud Frère (1923-1979). Published in 1962, the novel is considered as one of few testimonies of German Occupation in Belgium, its influence on the post-war Belgian-Belgian conflicts (Quastion royale, 1940-1945) and the literary output (déshistoire). This autobiographic narration, full of bitterness and disappointment, portrays a literary and very subjective interpretation of this shameful, unsaid and often neglected period in the Belgian history.

This article focuses on the aquatic element in two fantastic Belgian texts: Médua by Maurice Carême and La Grande pitié de la famille Zintram by Anne Richter, to study different functions: first, the aquatic space evokes the geography of mist and rain of Flanders, mythical land where everything can happen and around which floats an aura of mystery. The role of this location is twofold : it creates both the effect of reality and the fantastic effect. Water also has a diegetic function. Tainted with negative value, it has a negative influence on the characters: it triggers or promotes their metamorphosis and their decay.

Outside of Belgium the concept of fantastic realism is virtually unknown. The term fantastique réel, as proposed by Picard in the Young Belgian period as a determinant of one of the specific features of literature written by Belgian francophones, has been developed in the work and theoretical reflections of Franz Hellens (1881–1972). The article attempts at synthesising the Belgian author’s theoretical postulates.
PL

The present article has to be understood as a first introduction on Maurice Maeterlinck’s influence on Bolesław Leśmian’s work in general. The topic being quite broad, the focus is on theater and more precisely on the connection between Pelleas and Melisande (1892) and Possessed Violin Player (1911–1912). In order to understand this intertextual parallel, biographical and historical context as well as theoretic and philosophical relations is also examined in the first and the second parts of the article. The comparison reveals striking connections, relying mainly on theater which aims to be exclusively suggestive.

The novels of Vera Feyder are concerned with identity, memory, space and travel. In her writing her characters inhabit past and present, dream and reality. In particular, dreams and aquatic landscapes intersect in various creative ways in her oeuvre. This article analyses the contours of such landscape, understood in terms both internal and external, in two of her novels: Caldeiras (1982) and La Belle voyageuse endormie dans la brousse (2002).
FR
