The im(migration) and refugee crisis that are being exacerbated under the Trump administration, is a manifestation of empire-building and the long history of colonization of the Global South. A Marxist-humanist perspective recognizes these as consistent aspects of a clearly racist global capitalism that functions in the interest of multibillion dollar U.S. –based corporations and increasingly transnational corporations. Trade agreements, international economic policy, political intervention, invasion or the threat of these, often secure corporate interests in specific countries and regions. The authors use critical discourse analysis to examine the discourses around Mexican, Central American, and Syrian im(migrants) and refugees as examples of how U.S. mainstream media discourses normalize relations of domination between the U.S. and the Global South and by extension, between its peoples. The article posits these communities as an important revolutionary class for today.

This paper examines the Skolombo-street children of Calabar. It also investigates the reason for their continued existence, the derivatives in form of social and economic insecurity, inequality and other monstrosities visible in their presence. It questions the oblivious role of the institutions responsible for the care of the child, and parentification impulse as well as the lost humanism which existed in high premium in traditional African society resisted and reflected by text and language. The study is anchored upon Theo Van Leeuwen’s perspective on Critical Discourse Analysis which primarily studies the way social-power abuse and inequality are enacted, reproduced, legitimized, and resisted by text and talk in the social and political context. The study is a qualitative research conducted with the eclectic research methodologies such as biography, Participant Observation and Conversation. Among other findings, this study reveals that the Cross river state government has not provided enough fair ground to fully tackle the social and economic needs of the street child, that the desired comfort has not been provided for the girl child and that they have not been able to fully integrate the Skolombo into the echelon of the privileged. Conclusively, this has created spaces for youth delinquency, thievery, moral laxity and decadence. In the light of the findings, it is recommended that the government needs to put alternative and effective measures to play with the aim to curbing the menace of Skolombo and the street child culture. There ought to be an implementation of the child right boy and girl child. Stringent punishment should be meted on parents, religious leadact in the global space in order to reduce the molestation and marginalization of the ers and guardians who subject children to unnecessary molestation. Religious leaders and parents should be sensitized about the need to integrate their children within the family, intervention should be made compulsory.

The topic of children's participation in various issues was updated in the second half of the last century. It was largely due to the adoption of an important international document such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Children are as important participants in social life as adults so they have the right to express their opinions on various issues related to their activities, as well as to take into account these opinions by adults in decision-making in the family, in school, in the community, etc. Russian society is dominated by the traditional discourse of the perception of children as human becoming, socially and mentally immature, not-yet-an-adult. To study the parental discourse of children's participation in family issues, empirical material of the network discussion organized at the parental forum called Vladmama (Vladivostok, Russia) is used. In order to organize the discussion, an information injection was carried out. It was the description of the imagined problematic situation of child-parental relations on the issue of child’s participation in family affairs. The 81 messages received from 25 users were analyzed according to James Gee approach.  Seven Gee’s “building tasks” (Activities; Identities; Relationships; Politics; Connections; Sign Systems and Knowledge) are researched on the materials of mother’s forum. The process of creating value is always connected with the exercise of power. In our case, mothers using their power as parents redefine the meanings of children's participation. The main resource that opens the way for adults to power is money. Earning money is interpreted by the participants of the forum as a way for a child to involve in the adult’s world, an opportunity to legalize the child’s right to express his/her own opinion and defend this opinion. Other sources of parent’s power are their own life experience, knowledge and social skills.

Cornelius Castoriadis (1987: 147) argues that all societies have a central imaginary in order to consider basic questions about their identity. Imaginary specifications provide an answer to these questions, while they assemble, adjust, fabricate and construct a society. In all this, language plays a crucial role. As Castoriadis points out, it is through language that these social imaginary significations become manifest and do their constitutive work. In the spirit of these claims and the assumption that identities are constructed discursively (Tekin 2010: 4), the present article uses Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to investigate the construction of the identity of the Troika – the common support mechanism for Greece in the wake of its sovereign debt crisis and threat of a disorderly default in 2010 consisting of the IMF, the European Central Bank and the European Commission. The aim is to determine how the different political parties construct the identity of the troika. Since identity necessarily concerns a relation to the Self and the Other, and othering is an important activity in the construction of identity, the paper studies the strategies of othering used in the Greek Parliament by the different political parties across all political affiliations during the parliamentary debate preceding the vote on the second bailout loan on 12 February, 2012. The paper also seeks to identify the social imaginary of Greek society and determine whether it is one of social division and dissimulation or one of unity and accord.

The project is aiming at the quality analysis of a media discussion about introducing the gender parity to electoral law and the analysis of the activities of the Association of Congress of Women. Selected press publications are the basis of the quality analysis (according to the Critical Discourse Analysis) taken from the most opinion-creating journals. The objective of this paper is to identify the discourse (civil; non-civil) of analyzed journals.

Public opinion polls in Poland prove that Poles have a reluctant attitude towards Ukrainians. However, these data do not show how these attitudes differentiate according to the respondent’s gender. Official data on mixed marriages indicate that Polish men more often get married to Ukrainians than to other foreigners. It can therefore be assumed that the sex of immigrants is a significant variable affecting the attitude towards foreigners. Considering the significant influence of the media on shaping attitudes towards immigrants and reproducing ethno-stereotypes, we should look more closely at the representation of women immigrants from Ukraine created and maintained in the public discourse. It can be assumed that the image of women represents the male point of view, treating female migrants as sexual objects and caregivers. Other variables are also important (eg. age, level of education) which form an intersectional image. The research is focused on the way in which female Ukrainian immigrants are linguistically represented in selected periodicals in 2007 and 2018. The time intervals will allow us to examine the stability of the discourse. Two methods of analyses are applied: content analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). In the final part of the article, I will compare the representation of Polish migrants (based on studies already published) and migrants from Ukraine in the Polish press.

This article focuses on welfare surveillance as a sociological sub-discipline and a specific issue that has emerged in the past two decades in relation to the neoliberal revolution and the transformation of social systems in the West. The paper has three main goals: (1) a theoretical conceptualisation of welfare surveillance based on an analysis of existing empirical research; (2) an analysis of socio-practical manifestations and impacts of welfare surveillance; and (3) a contextualisation of the implementation of welfare surveillance within the Czech social milieu during recent social reforms. Within the scope of the first two goals, the author shows that welfare surveillance is theoretically construed along the lines of a specific combination of social justice and neoliberal governmentality, and that welfare surveillance enables the application of specific illiberal practices to welfare applicants and recipients in order to effectively discipline and normalise them, which results in the stigmatisation and criminalisation of recipients. Given that there is relatively little research on surveillance in the Czech Republic, the article opens with an introduction to the issue of surveillance.

Numerous examples of research in the field of pedagogics which are using critical approach to discourse analysis show the diversity in theoretical background and methodology. An example of a group of critical approaches is Critical Discourse Analysis. The general framework of Critical Discourse Analysis is important both for maintaining the identity of CDA, thereby highlighting the reasonableness of this group of approaches, and for dissemination of knowledge concerning it, especially among less experienced researchers. The paper presents the basic assumptions of Critical Discourse Analysis and their implications for educational research as well as practical guidelines to apply to the CDA approach, which is represented by Ruth Wodak.

The aim of the Zerwany kłos analysis is to examine its value. This study distinguishes two possible ways to evaluate the film. The first method concerns the quality of the film as an expression of the aesthetic effect. It involves treating the film as an art. In this respect, formal issues and the ability to use film stylistics and construct a coherent story are decisive. The second way is related to the genre of this movie. In religious cinema (hagiography) the most important thing can be the idea conveyed, although at the same time the principles of constructing meanings in the film can be preserved. The overall methodological framework is three aspects of Van Dijk’s discourse. At the detailed level, the classic approach to language and stylistics of the film is used, the American neoformalist approach and the zero-style concept. The conclusions from the conducted analysis point to the low value of film from the point of view of film art and high value in the implementation of genre objectives (here: ideological). The negative assessment results from the excess of young creators’ use of technical and workshop possibilities (too many) of applying formal solutions possible within the film style. A positive conclusion in the scope of accomplishing the assumed goal is related to the effectiveness of reaching the recipient defined by the producer, both in terms of their number and in terms of the ideas conveyed, consistent with their worldview. Despite the creators’ declarations about a reliable reconstruction of the reality of Blessed Karolina Kózkówna’s life, the necessity of transmitting planned concepts introduced creative content threads, influencing the reality of the presented story and introducing problems with a coherent and efficient reconstruction of the plot. This widened the range of promoted values beyond those related to the life of the main character of the film, referring them to the contemporary Polish political and social discourse.

Badanie to wyróżnia dwa możliwe sposoby oceny filmu. Wnioski z przeprowadzonej analizy wskazują na niską wartość filmu z punktu widzenia sztuki filmowej i wysoką wartość w zakresie realizacji celów gatunkowych (tu: ideologicznych). Negatywna ocena wynika z nadmiaru wykorzystania przez młodych twórców możliwości technicznych i warsztatowego (zbyt licznego) stosowania formalnych rozwiązań możliwych w ramach stylistyki filmowej.

The paper deals with the dispute about management of the Šumava National Park. The paper characterizes the discourse on the Šumava National Park on the basis of two interviews with the representatives of the contradictory positions. It analyzes the central topics, topoi and concepts by applying the Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA). The paper focuses on the way how both interviewees construct their opponent, how they construct the attribute “human” and in which contexts they use pronouns “we” and “they”. The paper reveals that the way of displaying the past is crucial for the identification of both dominant narratives. The basic interdiscursive relations in which the discourse on the Šumava National Park is involved are also outlined.
